REGGIO EMILIA EMILIA PRESCHOOL PRESCHOOL REGGIO Educational Design|ARCH 4002|Spring 2017 20,000 SF preschool and community center focused on embodying the principles of Reggio Emilia education: connection to community, classmates, and nature. This idea of connection, as well as the steep slope of the site, inspired the bending, curving form that became the basis of the design.

SOUTH CUMMINSVILLE CUMMINSVILLE SOUTH Urban Design|ARCH 4001|Fall 2016 The South Cumminsville studio was a case study on improving the health and safety of an incredibly destitute Cincinnati neighborhood through affordable, scale-able tactical urbanism strategies. Focusing on improving walkability (in conjunction with other student’s projects) a series of design strategies were developed that were affordable, replicable, and could be implemented by the community members themselves. A number of key sites were identified and a staged growth plan developed in the hopes of improving the area for the resident’s future health and happiness.

WALKING/CYCLING PATHS New walking and cycling paths provide a safer, more pleasant alternative travel route to school and work for the many residents who do not own a car. Utilizing established informal path along the most necessary travel corridors ensures a visible, safe, utilized amenity for all residents.

1. SIGNAGE Signage increases foot traffic by formally designating public spaces and acts as an invitation to utilize the routes. They also provide information as to what destinations are accessible, along with their distance and location. Visualizing the community and its amenities as a whole on a map also gives it a greater significance as a place to visit and explore. RENDERING OF DREMAN AVE. AND BEEKMAN ST, AN IMPORTANT CULTURAL INTERSECTION OF THE COMMUNITY.

2. BUILT STRUCTURES Having a built, formal entrance to public spaces has proven to be a significant contributing factor to promoting use of that space. These entrance structures will also act as shelters from over exertion and exposure when walking throughout the community. They will be placed strategically to serve this purpose and to create informal “third places” for residents. RENDERING OF AN UNUSED LOT RE-IMAGINED AS A PEDESTRIAN CORRIDOR AND CONNECTION TO COMMERCE.

INDUSTRIAL INFILL INFILL HOUSING HOUSING INDUSTRIAL Housing Design|ARCH 3001|Spring 2016 20 one and two bedrooms units located in the dilapidated industrial district of Cincinnati. The project looked to redefine the area by creating affordable housing for artists to live and work. A public gym, cafe, and art gallery help draw the people to the area as well as provide much needed amenities for residents. The green space also contributes as an inviting and sheltered oasis from the indistrial sourroundings, with views of downtown, raised platforms for gardens and seating, and open space that can be utilized for outdoor gatherings. The project balances integrating with the harsh landscape while at the same time creating a shelter from it; the result being a complex that meets the needs of its residents, the public, and the redevelopment of the area.
