“We saw it in a bit of mist and rain on a damp fall day - which only emphasized how special a place this is, and how immense and expansive.

Hidden in the deep River Rye valley, the beautiful and tranquil abbey ruins reflect nearly one thousand years of spiritual, commercial and Romantic history. BYLAND ABBEY Byland, Coxwold YO61 4BD
This beautiful ruin, set in the shadow of the Hambleton Hills, was once one of the great northern monasteries. A truly outstanding example of early Gothic architecture, Byland inspired the design for the famous York Minster Rose Window as well as influencing many other religious buildings throughout Europe. Its splendid collection of medieval floor tiles still in situ is the largest in Europe.

Follow in the footsteps of Bram Stoker’s Dracula by climbing Whitby’s 199 steps, tradition demands you should count them as you go! Starting among a slew
of idiosyncratic shops, the steps clamber up the cliffside, slowly revealing more and more of the red-roofed town.

WHITBY ABBEY Abbey Lane, Whitby YO22 4JT
Whitby Abbey is surely one of the most evocative and dramatic remains in British history. You can see the ruins from several miles distant. Up close, they are even more impressive: the glorious stonework, mottled by the salty air, but still as richly detailed as it would have been in the 13th century, stands stark against the Yorkshire sky and North Sea waves.

KIRKHAM PRIORY Whitwell on the Hill, Malton YO60 7JS
The location of Kirkham Priory is simply stunning; it is situated on a sloping plateau above the River Derwent, a short distance above a graceful, arched bridge. On both sides of the river the hills rise up wooded, green slopes to create a natural amphitheatre for the priory remains.
