Levent Kara / Thomas Goodwill Summer 2019 This studio included a comprehensive project where we were responsible for designing a multi-use art studio building. The program consisted of a dance studio, sculpture studio, music studio, painting studio, offices, a library and a black box theatre. My approach for the black box theatre was more flexible and it allowed for more informal events to go on in the dynamic lobby. The theatre doubled as circulation and display areas for sculptures when there aren’t events happening. My facade used a hanging brick system in order to create different natural lighting effects in different areas to make the spatial condition change. This system of brick also allowed for a push and pull of the form to create covered outdoor space in select areas. The covered spaces connect to the street but remain some amount of privacy as a relief from the busy interior of the building.

Telluride Botanical Gardens Stanley Russell Fall 2019 This project began with abstract constructs in order to experiment with different kinds of architectural processes. Our site was located on a steep base of a mountainside in Telluride, Colorado and the program was a Botanical Gardens. It included a main welcome center with a library, gallery, cafe, education space, event space and offices. I created a main iconic space for this part of the program in order to create a cohesive experience at the base of the site before occupants begin to wander within the gardens and climb the steep mountain. Dispersed within the site are several greenhouses and observation towers that make circulation up the mountain easier and more experiential. At the top of the site, there is a public gathering place, an outdoor amphitheater, and a more private space, a meditation spa. The gardens weave through the built architecture of the site and bleed out into the landscape.

Morgan Library Annex Michael Halflants Fall 2018

Located on the High Line linear park in New York City, this project is primarily a library with some gallery spaces and a cafe. The facade facing the High Line becomes vertical reading room spaces in order to connect the occupant with the public below. The proximity to the park adds an element of delight and interest and allows the library goer to be connected back with the city. Pods are located within the library to hold the books and to house them in a spatial way. There is a larger reading room at the top of the building that opens up to the sky and provides seating in an organic way that emerges from the floor.

Mixed-Use Development Michael Halflants Fall 2018

Located across from city hall in Sarasota, FL this project included housing, retail, and offices. The offices and housing are separated on opposite sides of the building. However, the areas are united by a large social stair meant to unite neighbors together so that they can informally meet. It also allows light to enter the building as it is formally very porous. The office portion also includes several informal meeting places with some outdoor and some more formal meeting areas inside the space. The offices are surrounding a two story linear courtyard to create a more healthy working environment. Each area of housing also includes shared outdoor space that connects the occupants due to a skip stop elevator. Many units also include generous double heighted space in order to add variety in unit options.

Many skylights bring light into the office space and create a more open working environment (top left). The sculptural social stair binds the two main uses of the building together (bottom left). An elevation view of the building shows the many outdoor public spaces that are color coded in green (above).

Hillside Village Jan Wampler Spring 2019

This studio was an urban design class focused on revitalizing the small town of Casa Blanca, Cuba. Due to the scope of the project, the whole semester was a group collaboration. This studio molded my sense of public space and the idea of scale was contextualized. We designed for the people of Casa Blanca and interviewed them when we visited the site. This was a pivotal moment for our project because we derived our concept from the moments of interaction and observation of how the people use their space. The location of this village is across the water from Havana, Cuba. We tackled many issues that might face the people of Casa Blanca as Cuba begins to open up access more and more in the coming years. Issues like tourism and sustainable energy were some of the highlights of the project.
