Brief

Imagine our colosasal landfills in the UK as sensible resource sheds to build our future urban spaces, where eventually the future of architecture and design can make no distinction between waste and supply. The global issue of 'urban compression' in the future of cities has led us to invesigate new interventions that operate through intuitionism and novel methodologies of practicing architectural design in our built environment. Cities are the absence of physical space between people and technology They enable us to work and play together and their success depends on the demand for physical connection. Architectural propositions will propose an extended city reconstituted from its own ground materials. To re make the city by utilizing all the materials entombed in the ungrounding process of constuction. To craft from the we have exhumed from the ground to construct differnt material combinations to serve differnt purposes in the design. What if architectural design was no longer legitimated through a promised structure or even a mere imagined one but was insted to reach absolute continuity, in which construction constructed itself.

History Of Dartford Marshes

Dartford has a rich history. The outbreak of smallpox in the late 1800s required isolated hospitals, that took the form of boats which where moored near the mouth of the river Darent (Fig 4). The turn of the century brought the temporary hospitals, Long Reach Hospital and The Orchard Hospital to continue you catering for those infected with smallpox. Around the same time Joyce Green Hospital was also built after the smallpox outbreak the hospital continued to be used until WW2 when it became part of the Emergency Medical Scheme. The hospital discontinued its operation in 2000. It is clear that the care idustry has moved out of Dartford Marshes due to the local industries becoming so industrial. An example of an industry that has lasted a large geration of the marshes history is Little Brook Power Station. Little Brook Power station (Fig 5) has been running since nineteen thirtysix and at the time was much more expansive, however flooding destroyed three parts of the factory. The river used as a tool for cooling the turbines and allowed large coal deliveries. Bathymetry and Flood Risk of the River Thames and the River Darent Scale 1:10000 An anyalisis of flood risk may shape achritectural projects in the surrounding areas. A levy seperates the Thames and the marsh land and the hydrolic dam at the mouth of the river Darent protects the surounding industries from flooding. The darker blue areas indicate the areas with higher risk.

Brief Response

The response to the brief began by assessing Dartford Marshes on a macro scale. It was not only to find a suitable site for a design but to understand in full what environmental influences the architecture will have on the site and what environmental conditions already exist. The area consists of many industries such as; farm land, scrap yards, coal fired power station, shooting range and motocross race tracks. Persevering Dartford mashes at numerous scales such as macroscopic, human and microscopic allows for a designer to see how building elements may be affected, from the environmental influence of material choice, to a type of welding join. All of the industries based around Dartford Marshes are particularly industrial and have a large carbon footprint. The smoke from the power station, motocross bikes, and the tractor enables one to imagine the pollution. Looking into the macro aspects of Dartford it became clear there are many other environmental influences that are invisible to the naked eye. Radio waves and electromagnetic field are something we come into contact with every day, not only that but as a society we depend on phones, computers, fridges, lighting, radios, WiFi and many other things. The project proposes an Electromagnetic Radiation Safehouse for those who may be suffering from environmental illnesses. People who encounter contemporary diseases which consist of headaches, nausea, asthma, eczema are often misdiagnosed or diagnosed as paranoid or stressed. The lack of research into the negative effects of electromagnetic fields and radio waves, have left a void in the consequences of certain illness. Due to the outbreak of so many illnesses the Breakspear Medical group (a clinic that specializes in allergies and enviromental illness) have decided to invest in the project to assess the benefits and outcomes of this environmental test centre.

By analysing the area for high levels of sound and electromagnetic fields it became clear where to situate the site. I wanted to place the site along the river similarly to the floating smallpox hospitals, also the occupants will be able to enjoy views of the river.

Environmental Illnesses - Electro-Hypersensitivity (EHS)

I propose to design an experimental testing ground for those suffering from ES. They will be able to reside in the building for a month to six weeks, To enable them more understanding of whether or not the removal of electromagnetic radiation effects relives there symptoms.

Little Brook Power Station

Breakspear medical group are a privet clinic that treat people and conduct research in the field of IEI they are based in Hertfordshire, England. This group assimilated there efforts with European parliament to have the World Health Organisation (WHO) classify EHS's as a disease in international medical professions. The WHO conducted experiments in 2004 with scientists in the field to gain further understanding of how non-ionising radiation effected those suffering with EHS. As suffers of EHS usually have varying symptoms and find it difficult to pin point various waves, due to this it extremely difficult for the WHO to classify it as disease. Treatment for EHS in the UK consists of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) offered on the NHS to aid those suffering with metal problems. Allowing the patient to correct there behaviour and understand that the thoughts they are having are irrational. Although this treatment is seen as effective it essentially sweeps the issue under the carpet. With increasing dependence on electrical appliances it seems unlikely the WHO will enable EHS the right of being a scientifically approved disease, as it would mean a shift in infrastructure or a outcasting those with the deisese.

Environmental Illnesses (EI) is something millions of people suffer from, aliment such as asthma, eczema and allergies. The increase in harmful gasses, pollutants and overcrowding is begin to deteriorate peoples health. Many IEI's are treatable and scientifically accepted as illnesses, electro-hypersensitivity (EHS) however is not seen as an EI.

As my building will be a short term home to those suffering with ES and as the architecture is only an experimental environment, I am to ensure the location of local hospitals. The current verdict on ES is that it’s a mental state of mind rather than a real illness. Although there will be doctors on site day and night to help treat patients, precautions must be taken to ensure their safety. In addition to the occupants, visitors to the building may have an injury that may need medical attention and it is good to have an idea of local hospitals

By To generate insight into ES it is important to try and get local Hannah Theodorou schools and colleges Greenwich University involved in the project. Schools in the local area will have ID access to the building by land making the journey to the site Student - 000609208 easy and cheep. Group visits will also be a good way to generate revenue for the project. There are many schools in Dartford and the surrounding areas primary school have approximately 300 students, whereas secondary schools have approximately 1000 students. Dartford Technology college will also be key visitor.

Electromagnetic radiation resides in all objects, the human body and even the earth has its own lectromagnetic field. Some man made field are considered to be harmful to the human body (ionizing) whereas others are seen as less harmful (non-ionising). There are many research papers showing effects of thermal energy on the human body, there is no conclusive evidence that these fields are harmful.

However people suffering with environmental illnesses such as electro-hypersensitivity (EHS or ES) are affected by these frequencies the symptoms are headaches, nausea and drowsiness. These people are hypersensitive, however that does not mean that electromagnetic fields do not effect people not suffering with the illness. The rays most common in the everyday interaction with the world are ultra violet, visible light, inferred, microwaves, radio waves, long waves. It is well known that long and extensive exposure to these waves can cause serious health problems. There are certain types of materials that prevent waves from traveling for example iron prevents gamma rays from traveling however, it holds radiation, thin sheet metals like aluminium in large quantities disables everyday frequencies.

After taking reading from the site and mapping with lines what types of waves move across the site. At the intersection of 3 or more waves I added a node. These nodes advised me on where the site would need the most protection. The waves change across different levels with buildings obstructing waves and certain fields are admitted at different levels.

Waste water design

CIWEM (Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) are pioneers of installing Reed Bed wastewater treatments. They advise these key points in creating your own wastewater bed. • Excavate and line the void to prevent seepage. • Most UK systems flow below the beds surface, • The natural micro-organisms metabolise the pollutants the in water. • A choice must be made between gravel or soil. Gravel enables the waste to be digested quicker however soil can deal with larger and more polluted amounts of waste. • Phragmites australis is the plant name of the commonly used type of plant in the UK and has an extensive root system good for oxidisings the water.

Reef beds are an effective way to cleanly dispose of waste. The process enables the surrounding river to be used as well as using an alternative to the sewage works adjacent to the site.

Artiler Non - Electric A design group who create household products such as refrigerators, vacuum cleaners and dehumidifiers that don’t need electricity. The technology uses natural processes or heating and cooling (for fridges) and pushing and pulling power for vacuums. I plan to encoperate there designs of these objects into my acrchitecture to prevent the use of electricity.

The public not only from around Dartford but from around England especially school children will invited to learn about ES and electromagnetic spectrums at the safe house. It is paramount there is a clear dived between space that is public and space being used by the occupants. There should be rooms to give lectures in and an example of Ferro fluidics to help children understand the power of invisible fields. Clients can also be directed here for consultancy which are usually an hour long so a cafe to eat and drink would kill time while they waited for results.

After a conversation with the head doctor of ES treatment and diagnosis. He advised that clients would like to feel relaxed and would need plenty of personal space to rest. As the location of the site overlooks the river Thames, views across the river are a must have. Along with personal space it is key for spaces where patients can interact with one another to maybe exchange there personal experience of suffering with ES. The apartments must have rooms that will allow for disabled accesses and enough room for young families. Doctors will stay on site overnight incase of any urgent requirements so a place for a doctor to stay on there shift will be needed.

Uk building regulations state that purpose group 2a (insututional building) must have no move then a 9m (in one direction) or 18m (in more then one direction) travel limitations to a fire proof zone. This plan maps the distance of to fire proof zones.

Procurement This is a tradtional procreument contract. The key features of the contract are:

The specailist contactor is contacted due to the use of specific material e.g copper, steel, iorn, zinc. It is there job to work with the main contractors aswell as the architect to make sure there is an undertansding of how these material will intergarte with the rest of the building. The tender package (a compleate set of all drawings from each member of the deisgn team) is then sent for pricing enabling the build to be costed before its constructed.
