From a city to a sea. I swopped canals for the head of a loch on the west coast of Scotland and cafe cycling for wild weather walks. I now looked at big blues and challenging greys from a 500 metre beach looking out to Jura, to Northern Ireland, across The Atlantic to America. I landed in a winter of heavy storms and freezing waves washing up piles of plastic rubbish along the beach. I was fascinated. I love colour, and I like plastic. I always collect and create with whatever I find thrown away wherever I travel. I have lots of boxes of plastic odd things I’ve collected over years from city markets for my 3d illustrations and prop designs. But I’d never seen so much plastic washed up in the sea, now all on my own doorstep. Seaweed heaps tangled with shredded plastic
much domestic plastic stuff from supermarkets, our home, work and play. I’d joined in our local beach cleans for years so was used to the concept of keeping our beaches clean. Beach cleans are usually wet, but fun community events. Our tiny village, kids and families, we all join in, cleaning our local coastline, raising money for the primary school for every rubbish bag filled. I started collecting plastic sea trash without knowing what I’d do with it. It’s my creative process; collecting, photographing, making... decoding where I land. A trip to Australia 5 years later changed my horizons and colour blues again. Discovering sunny beach living while seeing plastic washes up in hot countries too; it all connected. But until I lived by the sea and daily walked this plastic mess, I’d never questioned why it was there in the first place? Out of sight out of mind? I’d never thought about it in the city. It made me start to look.
