Osha Roof Safety Guidelines
Overview: Falls are one of the prime causes of death in the construction industry accounting for 3,500+ fatalities between 2003 and 2013. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Health Act of 1970 assures safe and healthful working condition for working men and women. Let us have a look at OSHA commercial roofing guidelines.
Personal Fall Arrest System • Employers must provide fall protection when workers are exposed to a fall of 6 feet • Personal fall arrest system is one form of fall protection • A PFAS consists of a harness, anchor, lifeline, and lanyard • It must be used properly for effective results
Rescue of workers • In the event of a fall, employers need a plan for rescuing workers • If fallen worker is not rescued quickly, it can lead to a medical emergency • Employers need to ensure that workers and supervisors are trained • Rescues must be done properly
Fall restraint system • Employers can use a fall restraint system to protect workers from fall hazards • A fall restraint system prevents workers from reaching the edge of the working area • As per OSHA guidelines for osha roof safety, fall restraint systems should have a capacity to withstand 3,000 pounds • Workers must be trained to determine the right lanyard length
Guardrail System • Protect workers from fall hazards • It should be 39 to 45 inches above working surface • Mid rails must be installed midway between top edge of guardrail system and working surface • Should be able to withstand a 200pound force, outward or downward
Warning line system • Should consist of ropes, wires, chains and supporting stanchions • Should be erected not less than 6 feet • Be flagged a minimum of every 6 feet with high visibility material • Be no less than 34 inches • Be capable of resisting a force of at least 16 pounds
Ladders • Ladders should be inspected by a competent person • Foot on ladders should be secured • Ladder must be used only on stable and level surface • Areas on top and bottom of the ladder should be kept clear
