Hanover Basketball A NOTE FROM COACH MILLER For the past half-century, Hanover College has enjoyed a proud and storied basketball tradition; one made possible by the hardwork and tireless efforts of many players, coaches and administrators. From 1966-2008, head coaches John Collier and Mike Beitzel together averaged more than 18 wins per season. Our basketball staff is fully committed to continuing to build upon the accomplishments of the past. In doing so, we pledge to maintain a first-class program. It is our goal every year to put a fundamentally-sound, competitive team on the floor that represents the college well in their actions, attitude and playing ability. We want to put young men in uniform who the entire college community can be proud of as outstanding students, talented athletes and good people. While a great deal of significance is placed on winning in today’s world of athletics, we define our success as a program not only in terms of wins and losses on the court, but by the success our players enjoy once their playing days have passed. Hanover College Basketball coaches Jon Miller Former Hanover standout Jon Miller is in his third season as the Panthers’ head coach. He is the 21st coach in Hanover’s basketball history and only the third on the Panthers’ bench since 1965. Miller’s first two Hanover teams have consistently shown improvement over the course of the season. Both teams qualified for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament following the season. The 2009/10 team finished with a 15-10 overall record. After being a pre-season pick to finish fourth in the HCAC, the team ended with a 12-4 mark in conference play, finishing one game out of first place. Miller, a 1997 Hanover graduate, returned to his alma mater after five seasons as the head coach at Defiance College (Ohio). He guided the Yellow Jackets to a 19-8 overall record in 2007/08, including the school’s first outright HCAC championship (13-3). He was tabbed National Association of Basketball Coaches’ Midwest District coach of the year and the Heartland Conference’s coach of the year for the accomplishment. Miller’s squads posted a 67-63 record during his stint at Defiance, including a 3617 record through his last two seasons with the program. Miller was a four-year starter and three-time all-conference selection for the Panthers during the mid-1990s. He was voted the team’s most valuable player after the 1996/97 campaign and helped Hanover earn NCAA tourney appearances in both 1995 and 1996. A two-time team captain, he was a threeyear recipient of the College’s Scholar-Athlete Award and was honored as Hanover’s outstanding senior athlete in 1997. Following his collegiate playing career, Miller served as the top assistant at DePauw University from 1997 to 1999. He then joined Hanover’s staff as an assistant in 1999. While on the Panthers’ sidelines, he helped the Panthers earn three consecutive HCAC championships and three berths in the NCAA III national tournament. The program notched a 78-10 record during that span. Well-respected for his recruiting ability, in 13 years as a college coach Miller has recruited and coached six players who have won Player of the Year in their conference. Miller earned his master’s degree in recreation and sports management from Indiana State University. He and his wife, Angela, a 1997 Hanover graduate, reside in Madison, Ind., with their children Luke, Jack and Audrey.

Scott Cutter - Assistant Coach Scott Cutter is in his second season as an assistant coach with Hanover’s basketball program. Cutter previously worked as an assistant under current Hanover head coach Jon Miller at Defiance College (Ohio) from 2003-2007. He most-recently served as an assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan University during the 2008/09 season. In addition to collegiate teaching and coaching, Cutter has worked numerous basketball camps in the region and on the West Coast. He served as director of the Greater Columbus (Ohio) Basketball Camp and was associate director of the summer camp at Defiance. He also has worked at camps at Stanford University (Calif.), Gonzaga University (Wash.), University of Cincinnati, Xavier University and Miami University (Ohio). Cutter received a bachelor’s degree from Wilmington College (Ohio) in 2002. He earned a master’s degree from Defiance in 2007.
Brady Wells - Assistant Coach Veteran high school coach Brady Wells is in his third season with Hanover’s program. Wells, a 1983 Hanover graduate, coached the boys’ basketball teams at Salem High School and Scottsburg High School from 1998-2008. He guided those programs to a combined 234-130 record, including five conference titles, four sectional championships, a regional crown and two appearances in the Elite Eight. A high school health and physical education teacher, Wells was a standout cross country and track & field athlete while a student at Hanover. He resides in Scottsburg with his wife, Julie, a 1984 Hanover graduate, and their children Lauren and Logan.

ADMINISTRATIVE Staff President Sue DeWine Dr. Sue DeWine became the 15th president of Hanover College, July 1, 2007. As the former provost of Marietta College (Ohio), DeWine has extensive experience as an administrator, fund-raiser and communication consultant. DeWine was a professor at Ohio University from 1985-2000 in organizational communication and research and consulting. She served as director of the School of Interpersonal Communication from 1988-2000. She received an award for scholarship, teaching and leadership and an award for dedication to excellence and acceptance of diversity, vision and forthrightness from the National Communication Association. She has served as a consultant to Fortune 500 companies, government and educational institutions. A well-published author, she has written more than 60 communication-oriented books and articles. DeWine earned a doctorate in communication and counseling psychology from Indiana University in 1977. She received a master’s in rhetoric and public address from Miami University (Ohio) in 1967 and a bachelor’s degree in English and speech education from Miami in 1966.
Lynn Hall - Athletic Director Lynn Hall is in her 12th year as Hanover’s director of athletics. Under her leadership, the Hanover athletics have continued to thrive, with both the men’s and women’s programs winning Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference all-sports awards. A 1982 Hanover graduate, Hall was the head coach for the Panthers’ volleyball program from 1987 to 1998. She was able to build an outstanding volleyball tradition, win three conference championships and be named league coach of the year three times. She is a past member of the NCAA Division III National Volleyball Committee. In addition to her administrative work with athletics, she also serves as a faculty member in exercise science.

Blaze Ayers #54 Ayers played in 12 games for Hanover during his freshman season. As a senior in high school, he was a key member of Brownstown Central’s state runner-up squad. He earned the prestigious Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude as the outstanding participant at the 2009 Indiana state finals.

Mike Case #40 Case earned first-team all-Heartland Conference honors as a sophomore and appeared in every game through each of his freshman and sophomore seasons. In addition to his accomplishments on the hardwood, Case is a member of the Dean’s List.

Jason Doehrman #22 Doehrman appeared in 23 games for Hanover during his freshman season. He was a member of the Dean’s List in each of his first two college semesters. A member of the National Honor Society, Doerhman was named Concordia Lutheran’s most valuable player and was a second-team all-Summitt Athletic Conference selection as a senior. He was the team’s mental attitude award winner as a sophomore and the most improved player as a junior.

2010/11 Hanover College Basketball Players
Mitchell Meyer #42 Meyer was honored as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s freshman of the year and has since earned first-team all-HCAC honors after his sophomore and junior seasons. He was named Hanover’s most valuable player as a sophomore and as a junior, became the 33rd player in the school history to score more than 1,000 career points.

Meyer was an academic all-state selection and a member of the National Honor Society at New Albany High School. He graduated among the top 20 in his class and was a member of the President’s List. He was the most valuable player in the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association All Star game and received honorable mention all-state recognition. Ryan Nowicki #14 Nowicki earned honorable mention all-Heartland Conference honors and played in all 25 games for Hanover as a freshman. Off the court, he is a member of the Dean’s List and a Hanover Scholar Athlete. Nowicki, a member of the National Honor Society, was named the Hamilton County player of the year as a senior and was a Class AA all star.

Fletcher was a member of Bloomington South’s undefeated state championship team during his junior season. In the classroom, he earned a spot on the honor roll all four years.

Jacob Rieger #35 Year: Freshman Height: 6-4 Weight: 190 Position: Forward Hometown/High School: Cold Spring, Ky. (Bishop Brossart)
Rieger earned all-Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference honors and was the Region 10 player of the year during his senior season. He was also member of the Kentucky Basketball Coaches Association Division II all-star team and an honorable mention all-state selection, Rieger scored more than 1,000 career points. In addition to his effort on the court, Rieger was also a member of the National Honor Society.
Terry Smith Year: Freshman Height: 6-0 Weight: 165 Position: Guard Hometown/High School: Peru, Ind.
Smith was a three-time all-Mid-Indiana Conference selection at Peru. He participated in the East/West All-Star Game and was a two-time all-area honoree. In addition, he was a member of the National Honor Society and an academic all-state honorable mention selection.

Heartland Conference
The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference is a union of 10 private small colleges and universities from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. Formed in 1997, the Heartland Conference is affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association and participates at the Division III level, which offers no athletic scholarships.
Senior Mitchell Meyer is a threetime all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference selection. He also was named the HCAC’s freshman of the year in 2007.
The league sponsors men’s championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Championships are awarded in eight women’s sports, including basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field and volleyball. Five member schools were formerly affiliated with the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference and three schools were members of the Association of Mideast Colleges. Anderson University, Franklin College, Hanover, Manchester College and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology were each charter members of the ICAC. Bluffton University, Defiance College and the College of Mount St. Joseph were each members of the AMC. Rose-Hulman rejoined the league in 2006. Transylvania University, a former member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), officially joined the Heartland Conference in 2001. Earlham College, a former member of the North Coast Athletic Conference, was approved for HCAC membership last year and began league competition this fall. Hanover’s Collier Arena Collier Arena is the home for Hanover College basketball. Located inside the John and Anne Horner Health and Recreation Center, the complex is one of the finest small-college facilities in the nation. Opened in 1995, the Horner Center is a vital part of campus life for the entire campus community. Centrally located, the facility houses an arena, a fieldhouse, a 6,000-square-foot weight training and fitness room, an athletic training area, an indoor running track, racquetball courts and state-of-the-art classrooms. Collier Arena, named in honor of hall-offame basketball coach John Collier, has been the Panthers’ home court for the past 13 seasons. The climate-controlled facility seats 2,000 fans for basketball and can hold up to 2,400 for concerts and lectures. Hanover in Collier Arena The Hanover College men’s basketball team moved from Lynn Hall, the Panthers home since 1947, to Collier Arena prior to start of the 1995-1996 campaign. Hanover quickly established a homecourt advantage in the arena, posting a 13-2 record in the inaugural season. The Panthers have a 151-41 record in the building, including nine seasons with double-digit victories at home. Hanover College FACTS
Hanover is a private, coeducational liberal arts college, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Founded in 1827, it is the oldest, private, four-year college in Indiana. Location The town of Hanover is located in southeastern Indiana. Louisville, Ky., is 45 miles away, Cincinnati, Ohio, 70 miles, and Indianapolis, Ind., 95 miles. Campus Hanover College sits on 650 acres overlooking the Ohio River. There are 35 major buildings, characterized by Georgian architecture. Enrollment Hanover’s student body includes more than 1,000 young men and women. Almost all students live on campus. Faculty More than 90 percent of Hanover’s faculty members hold doctorates or other terminal degrees. The student-faculty ratio is 10 to 1, and many faculty members reside on campus grounds, creating an academic community.
Costs Direct student expenses for a year at Hanover, including tuition, room and board, are $35,800 for the 2010-11 school year. The most current cost information is always available from the Office of Admission. Financial assistance More than 90 percent of Hanover’s students receive some form of financial assistance. College aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and campus employment. Hanover’s strong financial base supports its rank in the top 10 percent of the nation’s colleges on an endowment-perstudent basis. Accreditation Hanover College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
Academic calendar Hanover operates on a 4-4-1 calendar. Students take four courses each during Fall and Winter Terms. Spring Term is devoted to a month of concentrated study on campus, internships or off-campus programs. Areas of study Hanover offers more than 30 areas of majors, including a design-your-own major with core strengths in the sciences, education and business. More than one third of our students go on to graduate and professional studies.
