After nearly three and a half years and countless hours of study, senior chemistry major Elizabeth Sommers ’17 is familiar with the lure of creating something new through the chemical reactions that occur every day in the lab. As the recipient of the Hanover Grant, the Class of 1956 Scholarship, and the Morse-Carson Scholarship, she is also gratefully aware of how donor gifts of all sizes can transform a life. As one of 10 children raised in Warsaw, Ind., Elizabeth has depended on donor-supported awards and scholarships to attend Hanover College throughout her time here. The Hanover Grant, a need-based award supported through gifts to the Impact Hanover Fund – ensured financial need would not stand in the way of her dreams of studying at Hanover. The Morse-Carson Chemistry-Physics Scholarship, named for the late Dr. Stanley Wallace Morse ’20 and Agnes Carson Morse ’20, allowed her to pursue a major she was passionate about. And the Class of 1956 Scholarship made her dreams of studying abroad a reality. Now, as Elizabeth nears the end of her final fall term at Hanover, she reflects on how she has changed as a result of her Hanover College experience: “The leadership opportunities that Hanover has offered me have made me into a much more confident young woman. I was never able to talk confidently in front of a group of more than 10 people before, and now I can stand in front of my sorority, as their president. I have loved my liberal arts degree experience.”

message FROM THE PRESIDENT Soon after I accepted the call to be the 16th president of Hanover College, I received a huge box of reading material—catalogs, old Hanoverian magazines and books about Hanover and its history. It was in those materials that I first encountered excerpts from the 1833 inaugural address of Hanover’s first president, James Blythe. In that address, Blythe stated “that the college which does not make the cultivation of the heart a primary object had better never have been founded.” The cultivation of the heart. In a world focused on test scores, GPAs and job titles, the education of the mind— while undoubtedly one of Hanover’s greatest priorities —too often overshadows the education of the whole student. What Blythe was referring to, and what Hanover still champions today, is transformative education. You understand what it is to be transformed. Like today’s students, you sought out a community where your ideas could be challenged, your skills could be refined and your passions could be unearthed.

Because of you and your financial support, today’s best and brightest students still have that option at Hanover College. Any institution can hand out degrees in exchange for money. It takes a special place and loyal, passionate people to transform a life, and I am so grateful for each of the donors listed on the following pages. As you will see, gifts of all sizes and to a variety of priorities are making a real and lasting impact on our students. Whether you made your first gift to the Impact Hanover Fund or established an endowment, the significance of your gift will be felt for years to come. message FROM THE CHAIR What is the modern definition of the liberal arts? How do we offer competitive advantages to our students that will set them apart from the other approximately 1.9 million college graduates awarded a bachelor’s degree every year?

faculty, staff and alumni that have taken a step back and looked at the college fundamentally. This has enabled the authors of the strategic plan to sculpt the future of this community and construct a compelling story of change in which everyone has a part.

These questions and more created the foundation for the 2016 strategic-planning process that resulted in Hanover Clear Vision 2020, a blueprint that focuses on four basic areas of critical importance: increasing enrollment, improving student outcomes, strengthening alumni and community engagement, and establishing financial stability and economic sustainability.

Now we face the challenge of implementing these ideas through a renewed vision and mission supported by better quality practices, improved recruitment and retention, more streamlined support systems and a new strength in local partnerships.

This strategic plan positions Hanover to be an institution that serves students of the 21st century and prepares them for careers and lives unimagined just 10 years ago. Now, in addition to the liberal arts foundation that defines Hanover, new majors like engineering, expanded opportunities for experiential learning, and new academic and graduate programs will multiply the best parts of Hanover and provide comprehensive educational experiences that meet the needs of today’s young adults. These additions and changes are also designed to make our College even stronger. The Hanover we all remember so fondly has room for improvement like any other organization. It would be easy to not do anything, believe we are a great institution and continue to do what we have always been doing. Instead, we have courageous

The future Hanover will be a combination of what was previously feasible, readiness in the face of an economic “new normal,” and a willingness to combine the intellectual capital of all Hanoverians into a single voice. I look forward to sharing the progress of these efforts throughout the year as these plans are realized. I encourage you to follow along as we move through this inspired plan and build upon our strengths to fortify Hanover for the next 189 years and continue to serve our students and alumni throughout their lives.

GOAL 1 – INCREASE ENROLLMENT 1.1: Increase

Vision Statement Hanover College will be recognized throughout the tri-state (Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio) region as a diverse learning community that excels in preparing students for professions and advanced study by combining a transformative liberal arts education with educational opportunities in distinctive professional disciplines. Through excellent undergraduate programs, meaningful co-curricular experiences, graduate programs in high-demand fields, and accelerated pathways to graduate study, Hanover will be the college of choice for the region’s most well-prepared students who seek to make a difference in local and global communities.

“Not for college days alone.” As the motto for Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, this phrase serves as a reminder that the bonds of brotherhood continue beyond graduation. For FIJI Clay Slaughter ’11, these words ring true for his entire Hanover College experience – an experience that prepared him to make a living, make a difference and make a life of purpose and meaning. And now as a young alumnus, he wants to invest in his alma mater to make sure the same experiences are available for today’s students. “I wish I had given sooner,” Clay shares as he reflects on his experience and his recent decision to donate to Hanover College. As he prepared to celebrate his five-year reunion, Clay decided to participate in the College’s first Reunion Day of Giving, June 16, 2016, and made a gift to both the Impact Hanover Fund and the Panther Club. Why these two funds? “I’m all about impact. I love that name. And as a former studentathlete, I want to support Hanover athletics.” Though Clay’s Hanover College degree has propelled him to career success in Phoenix, Ariz., and away from his Midwestern roots, Hanover is never far from his mind. From a recent office Halloween party that stirred up memories of Halloweens past at Hanover, to his memories of wiffle ball during spring term, Clay carries Hanover with him. “I didn’t realize how much I took for granted. Giving is my way of acknowledging what Hanover has done for me and staying connected.”

Individual transformation is powerful; it lasts a lifetime. When a family puts their love and loyalty for each other and their alma mater into action to ensure that transformation can continue for others, they create a legacy of impact that will endure for their lifetime and beyond. For Andy ’58 and Ann Taff ’58 Anderson, Hanover roots run deep. Andy’s parents, Ralph ’31 and Naomi Whitcomb ’31 Anderson married on campus and remained close with Ann’s parents, Jay ’26 and Doris Davidson ’28 Taff. The family and Hanover bond strengthened even more when Andy and Ann married shortly after their graduation from Hanover in 1958, and this legacy family extends to Ann’s brother, the late James Davisson Taff ’54; Andy’s brother and sister-in-law, Dick ’60 and Molly Morris ’62 Anderson; and Andy’s niece, Jessica Anderson ’04. As students, these family members all contributed as active members of campus – serving as sorority and fraternity presidents, competing in Panther athletics and participating in student organizations. As alumni, their engagement has remained strong in a variety of ways, including their investment in today’s students. When asked about the creation and continued support of the Naomi Whitcomb Anderson Scholarship and the Mr. and Mrs. Jay C. Taff Scholarship, Andy replies, “We created them out of our love for Hanover College and our families.” Because of these two great loves that started nearly 90 years ago, generations of students will continue to experience the special transformative power of Hanover College.
