With few exceptions, the general rule at Hanover College is that students are involved. Some students – like Monique Huynh ’18 – take involved to a whole new level. And she has been able to fully immerse herself in the complete Hanover College experience because of a wide variety of donors – from those who give small, annual, unrestricted gifts to those who make larger, restricted gifts to some of our highest priority areas. Each of those donors has played a critical role in Monique’s involvement over the course of her time at Hanover College and the moments that have defined her experience. Donors to the Impact Hanover Fund ensure Hanover remains an affordable option for Monique (and over 400 of her fellow students). And, as a Levett Expendable Scholarship recipient, Monique has benefited from an increased amount of need-based financial support that has provided the peace of mind and flexibility to truly take advantage of all Hanover College has to offer. For Monique, this has translated into serving as President of her Greek chapter, participating in the Medical Scholars Program (a partnership between Hanover’s Health and Biomedical Sciences Program and King’s Daughters’ Hospital), and being a member of the Art Club. In addition, as a participant in the donor-supported Summer Research Fellows Program, she was able to conduct research alongside a faculty member this past summer. And her involvement has been rounded out thanks to the support of the Panther Club, a group of lifetime and annual donors who ensure a first-rate experience for our student athletes, including Monique and her teammates who recently won the 2017 Women’s Volleyball Conference Tournament! These donor-supported experiences all add up to one thing: transformation. “I have gained new knowledge, discovered more about myself than ever, and formed new relationships. I have taken on roles that I never would have imagined taking on in high school. I have stepped outside of my comfort zone and gained a better awareness for the world that we live in. I have changed because of Hanover.”
“I am grateful to the donors of Hanover College because without them, I would not be able to be as involved as I am.”

Message FROM THE PRESIDENT For 190 years, Hanover College has attracted the best and brightest faculty and students from across the country and around the globe to teach, to learn, to grow, and to serve together. It is a legacy we honor every day, and as we began the strategic planning process, we committed ourselves to honoring that proud tradition, that critical cornerstone that defines the Hanover College experience. At the same time, we knew we were charting a path for the Hanover College of tomorrow and the generations of students who would make Hanover their home in 2020 and well beyond. As Hanover 2020 came together, we dreamed big dreams and aimed high, committed to transforming the people, programs, and places of Hanover College we all hold so dear.

During the 2016-2017 fiscal year, I have witnessed our plan come to life as more alumni and friends have stepped up to invest in our students and our vision for their future. The following pages share the impact of your gifts. You are bringing our vision to life. You are transforming our campus and our students. And we are so grateful. Thank you.
Lake Lambert, Ph.D. President

Setting the Wheels in Motion Last fall, the Hanover community comprised of faculty, staff, students and alumni, laid the groundwork for Hanover 2020 Clear Vision, the Strategic Plan for Hanover. Now the wheels are in motion to execute these inventive and broad-based initiatives: • Expand the options we offer our students and increase enrollment. • Improve the outcomes of our graduates. • Develop new ways to engage alumni and the community. • Set the stage for long-term financial sustainability for the college. We began with a thorough assessment of where Hanover stood in regards to the current and projected state of the educational environment, which laid the groundwork for putting our vision and objectives into action. As we now move through the implementation phase, you will see how Hanover will rise through the hurdles of change and seize opportunities that can make a monumental difference in our students’ lives, all while retaining the core values Hanover College embodies.
Message FROM THE CHAIR
As the first anniversary of this plan nears, progress so far has been remarkable. Of the 20 bold objectives included, 14, or 70% are progressing to target. Thanks to all who have participated in the creation, and now the realization, of those aspirations. You have set Hanover on a course to thrive for years to come. We also have another anniversary worth celebrating. The Hanover Plan, drafted by faculty in fall 1962, was another bold and innovative response to changing external realities. Like our current Strategic Plan, this document set an appropriate and desirable path that resulted in the Hanover that is present today. It encouraged students to undertake independent study and research, which evolved into the required senior thesis, and replaced the traditional, twosemester approach with two 14-week terms and one five-week May term. The 2020 Clear Vision Plan recognizes, as the Hanover Plan did 55 years ago, that new possibilities grow from what has been planted and cultivated before, but realizes the need to keep moving forward, to envision our future, focus on our vision and build a better institution together. I hope that we can count on your support, in whatever form you choose, to realize the timeless potential of Hanover College.
Mark A. Levett ’71 Chair of the Board of Trustees

Like so many students and alumni before him, Jace Gentil fell in love with the beauty of Hanover the moment he stepped onto campus (and to hear him tell it, wiffle ball sealed the deal). At the same time, he shared the concern so many students and their families carry as they make their decision about where to attend college: Can I afford it? According to Jace, Hanover College’s donors made his decision easier, as their gifts to the Impact Hanover Fund funded his Hanover Grant – financial assistance that makes Hanover a more affordable option for over 400 students each year. Donors made it possible for Jace to attend Hanover, and the impact of their investment is evident. Jace embraced every opportunity that Hanover College affords – from study abroad in Europe to an internship at Walt Disney World. And because of the members of the Panther Club, he and his teammates enjoyed growth and transformation outside of the classroom as they won the first Men’s Soccer Conference Championship in Hanover history and played in the NCAA tournament. Though Jace graduated in May, he continues to make his alma mater and our donors proud as only the second student in Hanover history to receive the prestigious Orr Fellowship at Probo Medical. “I carry on what I learned at Hanover in my day-to-day activities . . . .That’s the real beauty of Hanover – constant challenge.”
“I want donors to know that it was likely because of them that I chose Hanover.” 6

Every gift to Hanover College is significant, but gifts made in memory of a loved one are especially meaningful. For generations, memorial gifts have created a lasting impact on Hanover College students, while allowing family and friends to celebrate the lives of their loved ones.
Denny PLATTNER Study Abroad
Endowed Scholarship
In 1995, the family and friends of Denny Plattner ’84 created the Denny Plattner Study Abroad Scholarship to honor Denny and his time at Hanover College. Denny’s brother, Andy Plattner, reflects on their motivations for establishing the scholarship: “Hanover was a big part of my brother’s life; it presented him a chance to discover things about himself, about who he was and what he cared about.” Twenty-two years later, over 150 students have benefited from this scholarship in Denny’s name, as they have been given opportunities to discover new things about themselves. They have studied German abroad and completed field studies with the United Nations in New York City. They have traveled to Belize to study tropical biology and economic development, then returned to complete service projects in San Pedro. Some have traveled to Florence to study Dante while others have spent May term learning about urban history in London. Each of these trips has been life changing and transformative. And all have been made possible because of Denny Plattner and the generosity of those who loved him best. In 2017, Denny’s family and friends ensured the scholarship and Denny’s legacy will continue in perpetuity by endowing it. They also gifted the campus a more tangible reminder of Denny in the form of Enigma, a sculpture by Steinunn Thorarinsdottir. Located in the Zirkle Memorial Garden, Enigma has transformed the Hanover College campus and stands in memory of Denny, while reminding all who view it of the mysteries of life and youth. Ultimately, through both the Denny Plattner Study Abroad Scholarship and Enigma, the family and friends of Denny have found meaningful ways to transform lives and carry out Denny’s affection for Hanover College: “Denny would’ve made contributions on his own if his life had been longer, we know that, so we try to go forward with contributions in his name. In doing so, the promise that his own life held is reinforced for us.”

Campus GIFTS
From changing the way we prepare students to make a living to inspiring the curiosity of our local community’s school children, donor gifts are transforming our campus and furthering our strategic plan as they improve student outcomes and strengthen community engagement.
Charters of Freedom Vance ’72 and Mary Jo ’75 Patterson donated the monument honoring the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and Bill of Rights to provide localized access to replicas of the documents for educational purposes. Hanover is the first college to receive a gift of the Charters of Freedom.
Hagenah Enrichment Series With support from Tricia ’66 and Will Hagenah and German American Bank, Hanover launched the Hanover Enrichment Series during the 2016-2017 academic year. Headlined by Sal Vulcano, Bill Nye the Science Guy, and Michio Kaku, the series attracted prospective students, engaged the campus community, and brought educational and enriching programming to the local community.
Levett Career Center Made possible through the generosity of Mark ’71 and Marabeth Ice ’71 Levett, the Levett Career Center, housed within Hendricks Hall, provides a one-stop campus location for all students seeking career counseling, an internship or interview preparation. The Career Center, the Business Scholars Program, and the Experiential Learning Program are all housed within the space, which was dedicated on May 5, 2017.
Tinker the Tyrannosaurus Private gifts to the College’s museum fund allowed Hanover to become home to a rare cast of Tinker’s remains. Described as “one of the most scientifically significant and most exciting T. rex skeletons ever found,” Tinker has transformed the Science Center and provided another form of outreach to the local community.

Dear Class of 1953, Thank you! I’m a senior English major and Business Scholar, and I’m graduating this spring of 2017. I look forward to venturing out into the community and working to make this world a better place. Hanover has given me so many opportunities: I studied abroad in Belgium, I interned at the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library, and I have been challenged in difficult classes taught by wonderful professors! Thank you for making my time here possible, Brianna White ’17

Dear Class of 1968, I want to take the time to sincerely thank you for contributing to my education. Your donation helps me save money to attend law school, which is in my very near future. Also, I plan to travel abroad next year in Australia. I could not have had the opportunity to do any of those things without a Hanover education. The connections I have made here at Hanover will last me a lifetime. I feel truly blessed to be a Hanoverian. Sincerely, Lauren Bridgewater ’19

Dear Class of 1955, I am ever so grateful for your scholarship gifts, not only for myself, but for the greater good and community of Hanover College. The two years I have experienced at this college have been the highlights of my life. I have been growing so much as a person and citizen in this wonderful world because of the interactions I have had on campus with faculty, friends, peers, and great human beings making a difference. I am a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity Chi Chapter and I am pursuing a career in science, majoring in either chemistry or neuroscience. I thank you all for the support and giving life-changing opportunities to those in need of financial assistance, like myself. You all have made it possible for young adults and ambitious students to flourish in gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to society and benefit humanity in infinite ways. The endowed fund you all have generously given has maintained the function of this lively establishment and you all have personally upheld the beauty and values of this lovely place. Thank you, Kyle Carson ’19
