THE UNRAVELLING

IN THE GRATEST SHOW ON EARTH

by Fin Kenedy, directed by Paul Hildebrand.

In an out-of-the-way fabric shop, a dying mother challenges her three daughters to weave for her their greatest tale, using nothing more than pieces of cloth. As they tell their stories, the shop fills with their creations -– demons, zombies, talking fish, and reflections of themselves -– their imagination unravels the very fabric of their reality.

Garry Holstein

I am an artist living in Oakland, California. I am also a physician. I studied art at Hanover College and then moved straight to studying medicine at Indiana University, followed by an intense Emergency Medicine residency in Atlanta, Ga. I am now working as an ER physician in the SF Bay Area, all the while trying to create and share my art. Together, art and medicine create my life’s balance.

Garry Holstein is the director of the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. He came to the University of Southern Indiana from Arkansas Tech University, where he was Visiting Professor of art. He received his MFA in Visual Design and MA in Organizational Communication from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He served as founding Director of the UA outreach gallery, sUgAr, in Bentonville.

Nylons are the start of my art. I have reinvented the nylon and integrated it into a new realm of life, no longer owned by its wearer. It is able to be independent and move outside the predefined boundaries. I have been working with pantyhose for over six years.

During this time, he also worked as Donald Roller Wilson’s personal assistant, an opportunity that provided experience with the mechanics of a very prolific, respected contemporary artist.

Winter Exhibits Kate Seprish The arousal and experience of pleasure is enjoyable, desired and actively pursued. But what about pleasure sought or realized through an encounter with the unexpected, the disgusting, or the grotesque? My work is fueled by this question and the many which arise from it. The lists of what generates pleasure and why are as numerous and vast (albeit unique) as those who seek it. One traditional elicitor of pleasure is beauty, but this notion is problematic because there are innumerable manifestations as to what exactly it means; simply put, what is considered beautiful varies greatly between historical periods and different cultures.

R.J. Mitte played Walt, Jr. the son of science teacherturned-drug manufacturer Walter White on the Emmy-winning AMC drama “Breaking Bad”. Like his character on the show, Mitte has cerebral palsy, although his is a milder form of the disability. Mitte has had to overcome many of the challenges presented by his cerebral palsy. His acting career began with background roles on “Hannah Montana” and “Everybody Hates Chris”. His big break came in 2008 with “Breaking Bad,” which he viewed as the “perfect role” to enlighten a broader audience about people with disabilities.
