The Nangang Bottle Cap Factory, originally devoted to producing caps for beer bottles, neighbors Nangang Train Station to the south, Xinghua Road (connecting the station to Nanxing Park) to the east, and the local core of the community along Nangang Road to the north. The 10-odd structures within the factory area form a grid-like configuration of solids and voids. Traces of past industry linger within the continuous space and high ceilings of the abandoned warehouses, with graffiti adornments heightening the unique ambiance of the urban ruin.
ORIGINAL OLD BOTTLE CAP FACTORY (URBAN RUIN)
‘NEW INTERVENING MEDIUM’ Using the color white as an intervening medium, various solids are inserted within the site, opening up the boundaries between interior and exterior, and juxtaposing the old with the new. The white beer boxes of old have been transformed into six white boxes, transforming the rugged walls, wooden truss structure, and high, open spaces of the abandoned warehouses. These interventions allow a transformation to take place among the once lonely and silent factory structures, taking root amongst the space formed by the first two rows of warehouses, now a stage for various exhibitions and artistic performances. The entire community and general public is invited to explore the multitude of surprises and delights within!

This is our first attempt at using the form and symbolism of a beer box to outline space. The beer box itself if an industrial product within the beer cap factory assembly line, and is a familiar everyday object for the public. Using the concept of a beer box, the design transfigures the form to create a variety of new spaces, richly illuminated with layers of light and shadows, historical memories and experiences. As the Bottle Cap Factory of yesteryear is transformed into a nurturing environment for creativity and vision of future urban living, the site not only becomes a playground unaffected by industrial production for children, but also a playground for adults as well, unleashing their pressures wrought by reality, transporting them back to a state of innocence and joy, and allowing their imaginations to frolic with abandon.

BAOYE FLOOD DETENTION PARK 2010-2011 PROJECT DEVELOPMENT, FACADE STUDY, CONSTRUCTION DRAWING, 3D MODELING & RENDERING PROJECT MANAGER : DAREN CAI LOCATION : KAOHSIUNG CITY : WITH CHINNAN HSIEH TEAM PARTNER
Because of the lower terrain, Kaohsiung city has suffered from floods. Nowadays, the government promotes the Detention Pond to control the water level, it also serve as park and open space for citizens. The Baoye Detention Pond project is one of them and the mission includes two parts - the landscape of the detention pond and the construction of the pumping station. Because the detention pond is usually dry, our proposal is to lower down the artificial construction and to use landscape as a means to echo the local needs, so the detention pond is more like a park than the facilities of water. We study the section carefully, especially the situations with or without water, and how the residents approach the detention pond. We believe the visitors would enjoy their experience with the detention pond and change

PUMPING STATION
The pumping station is part of the Baoye Detention Pond. It is the control center including space for pumping machine, duty room and space for promotion and public education. We divided the programs into three major spaces, so they could work separately and individually. The three spaces could be noticed from the outsides, combining glasses box, metal box and a transparent metal box. We spent most of our effort on the transparent metal box. It is the space for the pumping machine, the heart of the station. As there’s a lot of noise and heat when the machine starts to work, we suggest the double skin wall to reduce the impact on the neighborhood. Inner layer is a glass wall while the outer layer is a metal net. During dark, stormy nights, when residents staring at the pumping station, they could see light illuminating inside the room of pumping machine, which would probably comfort them and make them feel secured.

In addition to practical functionality, it adds depth and animation to the façade as the mesh changes appearance in different lighting conditions, becoming more transparent as daylight fades and the building is illuminated from within.

Longda Residential High Rise, which is located at an important urban junction in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, we attempt to transform the building envelope that protects the residents’ private lives into a meaningful public city façade. The architecture is to initiate an intriguing dialogue with the disordered built environment through a unique yet contemporary gesture. The design wishes to break away from the typical mundane and repetitive urban residential housing, and express a vibrant city life specific to Kaohsiung

REGENERATION OF THE OCEAN RAINFOREST 2014 ACADEMIC WORK, DESIGN THESIS THE COOPER UNION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE AND ART PROFESSOR: DIANA AGREST
(This thesis based on the Nature Research, Coral Reef Formation and Erosion) "Corals reef support an estimated 25 percent of all marine life, with more than 4,000 species of fish alone — even though they cover less than one percent of the ocean floor. It is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. The absence of the coral reef is the desertification of the marine environment. Coral mining, pollution, overfishing, blast fishing, canal digging and access into islands and bays are serious threats to these ecosystems. Today, 19 percent of the existing area of coral reefs has already been lost. By the 2030s, 90 percent of the reefs are expected to be at risk from both human activities and climate change. By 2050, all coral reefs will be in danger of extinction..." - United Nations Environment Programme

CATALYTIC SYSTEM
According to the architect / marine scientist Prof. Wolf Hilbertz and marine biologist Dr. Thomas J. Goreau's research, as low voltage electricity generated from the force of current and conducted through steel wire, this initiates an electrolytic reaction causing mineral crystals naturally found in seawater, mainly calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide, to grow on the steel wire structure. Electrical fields, plus the shade and protection offered by the steel wire, attract a wide range of colonizing marine life including sponges, sea squirts, clams, octopus, and sea urchins. In the meantime, coral begins to attach to the accreted ineral substrate and start to grow.

Because of evolved oxygen and the electrochemically facilitated accretion of dissolved ions, such as bicarbonate, this system accelerates the growing of coral 5-16 times faster than usual. As longz as current flows, the structure continues to get larger and stronger — its compressive strength could be 3720 to 5350 lbf/in², 26 to 37MPa — making it as strong as concrete. Gradually, steel wire will be swallowed by coral and become skeletal structure, then the finished new reef will be unplugged and returned to the nature. By controlling the array of steel wire, the new reefy ‘ceiling’ expands 200 meters per year and keeps the minimum 50 percent of transmittance for the penetration of sunlight. The space between reefy ceiling and seafloor will be the new habitat for marine animal to live and graze in. This system functions eternally with the help of constant current energy. The regeneration and expansion of rainforest of the sea materialize a Coralnatis, which is built humbly within the ocean.

KOREATOWN RIOTS IN LOS ANGELES 2013 ACADEMIC WORK, URBAN RESEARCH THE COOPER UNION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE AND ART PROFESSOR: DIANA AGREST
“…Indeed, had alien voyeurs really been watching the earth from a secret observatory on the moon or suburbs on Mars, they would have been mesmerized by Los Angeles’s extraordinary combustibility. No other urban area on the planet so frequently produces large thermal anomalies…” - Mike Davis, Ecology of Fear, 1999 This project focuses on the flammable level of the Los Angeles . Koreatown, the scene of 1992 riots, had the most complicated social, racial, economic issue, and had the highest density of alcohol among the Los Angeles City at the time. The streets functioned as fuses; liquor stores, grocery stores, bars, gas stations, and any building that housed a large amount of alcohol was equivalent to fire kindling. The Riots played the role of fire which was soon out of control spreading out over the whole city along the streets, igniting every flammable building and displaying frenzied citizens.

Nantou has expansive farmland, a large number of agriculture population, but has one of the lowest population density in Taiwan. The landscape in Nantou is complex, the weather is moist and changeable. As a result, innovative and appropriate construction is necessary. The main issue of this design competition is to conceive a modular construction method to overcome those environmental problems. Additionally, this building must adapt to varied country family structures, and make interior modification easy. 01

KINGSHAN: CEMETERY
SEASIDE
People in the past used to carry fish in the night, and spent more than ten hours going to Taipei to sell fish before break of dawn. The trip was difficult and dangerous. A lot of people died during the trip, and were buried in Kingshan. Hence, the section of path in Kingshan developed a large cemetery since Qing Dynasty.
HOT SPRING
TAIPEI CITY
Along the path, there are plenty of natural hot springs. Bathing together, a custom introduced by Japanese, became an important local convention. In Kingshan, thermaes function as the gathering place. It is the most important social facility for local people. On the other hand, in Huanxi and Bayen, the thermaes served mainly Japanese officers.

It remains a section in Kingshan, and is the only linkage between two villages- Meitain and Huanggan Villages. The two adjacent villages share common features: Aging population, endowment of natural hot springs and a large cemetery between them. The villagers feel intimate with the cemetery in which most of their familiar people were buried.

Meitain Village is a hot spring village since under Japanese rulership. Both Maitain and Huanggan villagers enjoy hot spring bathing here.
There is a ‘blank’ between Meitain Village and Cemetery. This area doesn’t have any house or tomb. It is like a ‘gate’ between life and death.
DEATH? or just is ‘MOVING’
INTIMATE
The aging population, short distance between housing and cemetery, and frequent tomb visiting, make the departed in Kingshan were just like 'moving' to the village of Death after passing away. In Kingshan, the villagers know more dead people than living ones. Hence, the cemetery is like another village in Kingshan. a
tombs houses
Some areas in Kingshan, the houses direct contact the cemetery. People in Kingshan are not afraid of cemetery because all the tombs are carry their passed family members and close friends.

GETTING LOST
People mainly use the path in Village of Death for four reasons. Tomb visiting, hot spring bathing, shopping and hiking. They need to frequently commute to the other side because the main thermae, grocery market and seafood market locate in different villages.
People who want to visit the target tomb should remember the character sign. But when entering the cemetery, there is no sign to be recognized. It is easy to get lost in the Village of Death.

PATH TRANSFORMING The frequent visits to the tombs and the hot springs are the two main reasons that make Village of death busy. The relationship among three villages is intimate and intense. I just want to reinforce this relationship and improve several problems.
MAZE
MAZE
MAZE ORIGINAL
STEP 1 PENETRATING
STEP 2 GROWING
STEP 3 ENTWINING
STEP 4 GATHERING
ISSUES 1. VILLAGE of DEATH is like a MAZE The placements of houses (tombs) in Village of Death are random. However, there is one straight path. When people visit tombs, they must find the right sign on the main path (A to I), derail from the main path and cross through the weedy area into the maze (entire cemetery). This process makes people confused and uncomfortable. 2. THE INSUFFICIENCY of FACILITIES The lack of facilities makes the process of visiting inconvenient. People need places to wash fruits, prepare incense sticks and burn paper money. 3. RELATIONSHIP REINFORCEMENT There are already plenty of people in the Village of Death (including living people and the departed). I want to make the cemetery path a new gathering place for both living people and the departed. They can play together, and have a place to ‘linger’ and ‘accompany’ each others.

FACILITIES PROVIDING
1. THE IDENTIFIABLE CORNER

2

3

4
BENCH
The corner provides people a place to accompany their passed family members and old friends at the same underground level. This corner will become a part of memory. Therefore, people do not need to remember the route signs anymore.
‘We are born naked and will die naked’ 2. SEAL ON THE LAND, THERMAE Bathing together has long been a traditional social activity for these two villages since the Japanese Rulership. I put a gate between life and death. This gate does not have a physical door, but behaves a seal on the landscape. A thermae is infilled to purify both people’s soul and body before they go in or out the Village of Death.

The cemetery path has two distinct sceneries - Kingshan view and mountain view. Old people in Kingshan spend their spare time bathing in the hot spring, chessing and savoring a cup of tea. The entire cemetery path is a gathering place, in which people not only interact with their neighbors, but also linger and accompany, communicate with their passed family members and friends.

B1 FLOOR FACILITIES
This gate does not have a physical door, but behaves a seal on the landscape. As a gate, a thermae is infilled to purify both people’s soul and body before they go in or out of the Village of Death. We are born naked, and will die naked. Bathing together is not only a traditional social activity in Kingshan, but also like a ritual for people to purify themselves before entering the Village of Death.

METAPHOR The entire thermae is a metaphor for cemetery. The random arrangement of tubes and colorfully illuminated environment make people have an illusion that they are in the cemetery. Hence, the thermae and the cemetery space link together in people’s mind. When people finish bathing and walk in the cemetery, they might feel more comfortable and peaceful because the environment of the cemetery reminds them of the process of hot spring bathing. People bath in the thermae can choose the suitable size of tubes. Different sizes of tubes correspond to different sizes of families or groups – just like the cemetery. The traditional Taiwan tombs have varied sizes for different family size of the passed. Additionally, the colorful glass on the tubes’ top generates the mysterious lights into the pool. The tubes reach to the ground, and blend into the colorful cemetery.
