INTRODUCTION Welcome to the second edition of the Wines from Spain Awards Guide. This Guide will provide you with a snapshot of what wines and regions are exciting some of the UK’s top wine tasters this year. Each and every one of the 107 wines featured in this brochure is a winner, having performed exceptionally well in a blind tasting of over 700 wines, which our panel of judges assessed over the course of two days. Sixteen of these winners have had bestowed upon them the further accolade of “Champion” for their outstanding characteristics. We hope you enjoy browsing through this guide and that you will be inspired to take new paths from this “road-map” to all that is exciting and vibrant about Spanish wines in the UK.

TIM ATKIN MW “Each year, the Wines from Spain Awards provide a fascinating overview of the Spanish wine scene. In 2013, we had over 700 entries from 60+ different regions, covering appellations from Almansa to Valencia. As ever, the sheer diversity of Spain was gloriously apparent: whites, reds, rosados, sparkling, sweet and fortified wines that are unique in style. The judging panel was made up of professional tasters from four areas of the wine business: buyers, importers, consultants and journalists. The members of the team brought different perspectives to the tasting table, ensuring lively, informed debate about each entry. @Timatkin www.timatkin.com

Red wines dominated the entries (with over 60%), but in terms of the winning wines their share was just over 50%, showing the strength of Spain’s other wine styles, particularly its whites and Sherries. The wines in this brochure are an invitation to try new as well as familiar things. This is only a fraction of what Spain produces, but it’s a short cut to some of the most exciting wines on the market. The judging team selflessly sniffed, swirled and spat their way through all those samples (and no, we don’t expect your sympathy) to pick the very best of Spain in the UK.

UNDERSTANDING A SPANISH WINE LABEL AGE Most Spanish wines will tell you their age, they’re not shy! Here are the main terms so you can decide on which style you prefer. JOVEN This describes young wine with no ageing and is usually light and fruity and best drunk now! CRIANZA This is wine that has a little bit of ageing in oak, at least 6 months which adds a dash more ‘oomph’ to the wine.

QUALITY CATEGORY There are four main quality categories to look out for: • Vino (Table wine) • Vino de la Tierra (country wine) • D.O. (Denomination of Origin) • D.O. Pago (wine from a specific single vineyard/estate

GRAPE VARIETY

RESERVA With at least 12 months ageing in oak this wine has more depth of flavour and complexity.

A grape variety provides a clue to a wine’s flavour profile. Look out for Tempranillo, Garnacha (red), Albariño and Verdejo (white) amongst others.

GRAN RESERVA Aged for at least 18 months in oak this wine is the epitome of smoothness and multi-layered complexity.
