The Elements Brief Outline

Considerations

Target Audience

Undertake an in depth and sustained research into an area of graphic design appropriate to your design strategy. Apply a range of research methods in the investigation of issues, practices and companies relating to your own particular area of study. Design and produce a publication to demonstrate your findings.

An important consideration was how to make the People who are either working in art or design or visual aspect and design of the publication synthesize interested in entering into a degree within this sector. with the content of it. The flow of information should Non gender specific. be considered carefully in order to build up a logical sense of focus surrounding the storyline.

Concept A documentary style storyline explaining the five elements making the methodology of my practice. Rather than being a showcase of work, it goes behind the scene to demonstrate and analyse the process and methods used to design.

Research

Research - Book Binding Methods

Research - Layout

Research - Use of Type

Research - Colour Scheme

Two options were considered for this publication. Perfect binding, an old traditional type of book binding going back to 1895. Coptic Stitch Binding going even further back to the second century. This method allows the spine of the book to be visible as well as the thread and introduces a natural look and feel.

Looking at layout of a simplistic nature, it was noted that full page images or even double page spread images appeared to have big impact, whilst still giving an overall calm effect.

Text overlaid images was found to help balance the page and also allow for use of big images whilst still making room for relevant text. This method also appeared to tell the story well without apperaring too text heavy.

When looking for a colour scheme for the cover of the publication which would immediately speak ‘natural’, examples of covers in earthy colours with black text were found to bridge between traditional and simplistic. It was also noted that black and white images worked well to get a calm and ‘naked’ appearance. This could work well for documentary style publications due to appearing less subjective with more concentration on what is written.

Typeface A marriage of heritage and new. A hand lettered version of the old English slab serif typeface Clarendon, originally dating back to 1845, has been used for headings and to highlight important text areas. Both the bold and outline version of the this typeface have been chosen, making it possible to apply varied amount importance and impact of words throughout the publication. The imperfection of the outline of this typeface, creating the hand rendered look, works well to communicate an element of nature and purity which is an important aspect of inspiration for me.

Trevor Baum and James T. Edmonson’s Mission Gothic, a recent addition to the Gothic typefaces, has been chosen for body copy and some of the subheading in order to offer some variety throughout the publication. It is a typeface that is very easy to work with due to its clean lines and high readablity. The lean and more condensed look of Misson Gothic compliments the rugged Clarendon well to help transform the publication into a contemporary piece of work.

Colour Scheme

Stock and Format

The colour scheme is calm and reflective of nature in its raw state. The stone colour adds an element of warmth and brings in thoughts of sand and stone, White, grey and black have been chosen for text to keep a very clean, balanced look with the choice of black and white images throughout the publication. Another colour is introduced in the front and back cover, being a natural brown which again is remiscent of nature and works well with the colour scheme inside the publication to give an overall natural look.

Design Development

Layout and Aesthetics

Finishing Process

A simple grid system was set up to use for the layout allowing balanced proportions to be used for text and images. Design trials were made for the front cover and the first pages in order to establish a suitable look. A decision was made to digitally print the internal pages and screen print front and back cover. Adding the screen printing element would work well to communicate this a method of print often used in finished resolutions created by myself.

Coptic Stitch Binding was chosen as the most appropriate binding method for two reasons. It is made up of signatures which are built up to make the entire publication. It was felt there was a suitable synthesis with the fact that the publications talks about Five Elements making up a methodology. In addition the aesthetics using this kind of binding brings out a harmony of a natural, hand crafted look. A mini mock up of the publications was made in order to practice the binding method.

The binding of the finished printed publication took place in three stages. First stage was to prepare front and back cover by adding another layer of stock to the screen printed covers. This was in order to add more weight and sturdiness to the covers. Secondly the signatures and covers were lined up to poke holes for the sewing part. Finally sowing all parts together.

Evaluation

Evaluation I am extremely happy with the outcome of this publication. A lot of thought has been put into the content to reflect how I work and my beliefs, backed up by relevant research, an analytical approach and the ability to judge the level of importance for my particular practice. This is also demonstrated through the choice of execution, proving the ability to synthesise and evalute appropriateness, using natural looking stock, screen printing and hand binding. The standard to which this is done, I believe, reflects a professional level. The layout is consistent, yet breaking the rule occasionally to create different levels of interest and attention. This has resulted in the information flowing well and made it digestible despite the amount of pages. Designing and making this publication has been a very personal journey, which has given me much satisfaction and enjoyment.
