"KNITTING THE BOUNDARY"
VISTOR CENTER RENOVATION
Fort Davis, Texas, USA
Besides the infinite sky, the first nature also becomes a fanscinating and impressive attraction at the site of the McDonald Observatory. The design intent is aiming to use limited infrastructures, to guide visitors to obtain visual experiences from three major objectives of the site, the infinite universe, the great topography on the earth and the wild landscpe.
Three types of boundaries are defined to describe the three dimension spaces visitors are involved on the site, which are proposed to interacted with each other to create comprehensive experiences for visitors by watching, feeling, touching and even listening. Boundary UNIVERSE Infinite and Untouchable The sky party, one of interactions between people and the universe, is of great importance for providing visitors’ experiences Boundary TOPOGRAPHY Finite but Untouchable The great shape of the nature, as the foreground of the sky and the background of the site, shows the true power of the earth Boundary LANDSCAPE Finite and Touchable The layer, color and texture of local landscapes provide the beauty of nature for visitors when they arrive on site 31
A new visitor center concept is also proposed to interact with the sky and the landscape, to provide experiences during both daytime and nighttime.
32
Four general design objectives are proposed to apply in site development, to provide accesses for visitors for interacting with local landscapes and improve their experiences on site: 1. Proposing safe, pervious and walkable path through restored grassland; providing the access to the texture of local landscape at low elevation level. 2. Mowed grasses as more gathering spaces for the star party on site, merging and being surrounded by local landscapes. 3. Proposing safe and separated paths for visitors from existing driveways; At the middle elevation level, overlook platforms provide the access to the broader view of topography and local landscapes on the site. 4. At higher elevation level, ridge paths are proposed to improve the existing condition for walkable infrastructures, engaging with unique highland forests and chasing the view of sky.

A new concept for the visitor center of the McDonald Observatory is also a part of assignments in this studio. The idea is aiming to merge the new visitor center into the wild landscape and engage with the sky, the topograpy, framing the unique views for visitors, as well as becoming parts of the larger perspectives. *Site plan scaled to fit the page

Star Party Plaza Section 1”= 30’-0”
Different framing of the sky and experiences of engaging with the sky are proposed through different public infrastructures among the site of new visitor center, such as seating and water features.
Due to different elevation, which has great impacts on the temperature, and hydrological condition, the vegatation shows unique features and varieties from the foot to the top of the mountain, through the transition of grassland, shrub land to woodland. Instead of creating landscapes, the concept is aiming to create opportunities and accesses to the experience of the nature itself.

COASTLINE REDEVELOPMENT & RENOVATION
YUCATÁN, MEXICO With the increasing presence of global tourism, many coastal cities in Yucatan have been faced with problems regarding a sustainable future, in terms of rapid coastal development, urbanization oriented to tourism and leisure, and private real estate development for seasonal immigrants. Three objectives are provided to improve the relationship between the public and private properties, in order to return the beach to the public, as well as creating an unified, more welcoming experience along Yucatan coast.
INTERSECTION The public park, which creates an accessible space for both local residents and visiting tourists, features unique sand dunes and coastal landscape
TRANSITION A walkable/bikealbe circulation system, with public infrastructure, to connect both two side of existing highway, the beach and the lagoon, providing continuous experience through movement 37
THE BEACH Leveraging the existing infrastructure, providing resting spots and observation areas to engage with local features, extending appropriate barriers for public and privacy, creating a more collective public beach area, as well as an unified, welcoming and “accessible-for-all” coastal area 38
