Design Strategy
2017.09-2017.12
The basic idea is to create a huge pergola in the MoMA garden. It is created as a permeable boundary to embrace the different natural scenarios and form a sense of seclusion. This pergola divided the site into 3 smaller gardens with respective theme: mountain, water, forest. The roof of the pergola is decorated with traditional Chinese patterns, which can cast elegant shadows on the ground, while the ground remains the original paving of MoMA garden. The vertical surface of this pergola is permeable and flexible, just as the real Chinese gardens. For some edges of these gardens, there are series of screens. With those screens open, the boundaries of gardens are blurred.

Changing Views in Movement Typology1: Pillars-Bench
With the division of pollars or screens, the scenarios between them are slightly changing in the movement, creating dynamic experiences.
In order to embody the sense of reclusion within the context of New York, I borrowed the traditional symbolism of Mountain and Water and introduced natural views into this narrow piece of site.

PERMEABILITY
Permeable/Flexible Surfaces
The permeability of traditional Chinese garden can be easily felt. The flexible vertical architectural facades invite the natural scenary into the indoor space. The typical masterplan of Chinese garden can also be regarded as a porous blocks. Porosity : Steven Holl

With all the screens open, the width of the boundary increases, and the boundary is also blurred. The scenery flows into the pergola naturally, and the scenarios between each pair of screens are slightly different. Although people cannot step into the garden area, the juxtaposition and transition of mountain, water, forest, shadow, original paving and all the views can always be felt.

02 STITCH Interim Urbanisms in the Port of LA Site Description The project is located in the port of Los Angeles, adjacent to the community of San Pedro. The planning area of this waterfront site is approximately 400 acres, which was divided into 5 sub-areas as we were considering the development patterns. Some of the existing buildings were reused in the design project, including a cruise terminal, a battleship museum, a maritime museums, fish markets and several warehouses.
Barriers & Opportunities We conducted in-depth research across the site as well as the adjacent community. The research manifested that the developing dilemmas including the lack of investment and a 30-feet height difference between the city level and the waterfront area. While the landscape resources and existing uses suggested great potential for recreation, and the relatively high rate of unemployment and the long average commuting time for local people also indicated the opportunity for introducing local jobs.
Interim Urbanisms In this design, the site was considered as a laboratory to experiment with interim landscape/public-realm typologies, as well as temporary building typologies and programs. We carried out site plans for 10-year short-term development and 30-year long-term development correspondingly.

Design Strategies: Landscape Studio Group Work (with Qin Fang) 2017.01-2017.05 Instructor: Javier Arpa
The main concept for this project was to stitch the upper-level city context and the lowerlevel waterfront landscape together, thus realize the mutual development of LA port. 1)Start-End Framework: In order to improve the waterfront accessibility, we introduced 5 pedestrian connectors to the site, which were set to connect the urban road system and the waterfront promenade. For each start point of the connector, we inserted a public anchor building or pocket park. Those three-dimensional  public realms were designed to eliminate the vertical barrier and attract people from the upper level. For each end point of the connector, we either reused the existing buildings or introduced new attractions to enrich the waterfront space. 2)Zoning and FAR: In order to enhance the recreational value, we maximized the waterfront landscape space by strictly limiting most of the developed zone within a highdensity band that was distributed along the vertical barrier. This band was of high FAR and of high accessibility from the main street. 3)Circulation: In addition to the latitudinal corridors, we also introduced two longitudinal circulations. The first circulation located right next to the vertical barrier and followed the form of the existing red car line. It linked all the buildings within the developed zone like a necklace. The second circulation extended along the coastline. Diverse programs were arranged along this waterfront promenade. 4)Economic Operation: In order to guarantee the investment of this long-term project, I first called for private investors to develop part of the port into a profitable F1 race track, while the precondition was that part of the income should be defrayed for the later development.

03 EARTH PETRI DISH Ecological Regeneration of Slate Belt Quarries Site Description Slate Belt is an amazing post-industrial site with numerous abandoned quarries. Among this large area, Bangor town enjoys a high consentration of quarries and peculiarly barren and exotic views. Meanwhile, those quarries are adjacent to important natural resources, scattered accross a matrix core habitats and watersystem, thus lead to the fragmentation of the surrounding habitats. Ecological regeneration of those quarries are of great significance for saving the regional habitats. EARTH PETRI DISH The topography of quarries can provide an isolated space with unique properties and micro-climates from the outside. For instance, the temperature inside quarries is lower, while the humidity is higher. The unique properties may provide rich niches, support uncommon species, andacting as Earth Petri Dishes. The establishment of these semi-isolated experimental site may contribute to our study of the adaptation of various species, especially in an epoch that undergoes climate changes.

04 OPEN OFFICE Reconstruction of Zhonghe Market Urban Succession Cities are always growing like an ecological community. Through the process of urban succession, the architectural function changes, the industrial structure shifted, and the overall appearance also adapts to a new way. We celebrate this dynamic balance and potential progress of a city, and hope to provide farsighted proposal for this transition.
Architecture Workshop Individual Work 2015.07 (3-Week)
Project Background Zhonghe Market is located among a famous area of garment wholesale markets in Beijing. According to the governmental planning, this area is supposed to realize the industrial restructuring and become a center of architecture-related industry(architecture design institutes and studios). In this project, I discussed how the building itself can realize an ideal office pattern for both the architects and the public to communicate together. The main strategy is to release part of the office building as both the main circulation space and the city hall, which can offer a chance for the interarction between staffs and the public.

SITE ANALYSIS
Beijing is a city composed of countless "compounds" that are compassed by high walls. However, the area of Dongwuyuan Garment Markets is a particular case among these compounds: it is an area that is free of enclosure. Therefore, the basic strategy for this reconstruction project was to maintain and further improve its publicness.

CURRENT SITUATION 2: USAGE OF GROUND-FLOOR YARDS (1)The display, plantation and construction forms in different yards are different from each other. It suggested that the different living demands of the residents. (2)The depth and interface of the ground-floor yards may result in specific using patterns. Different yard forms enjoy different publicity and indicate different activities.
The Elderly's Life in High-Density Cities The life of the elderly in the high building-density cities seems to be constrained in fixed “boxes”, lonely, depressive, lack of communication and stagnant. However, the residence, closely linked with people’s life, is supposed to respond to the residents’ variable demands. By detailed study about the living condieiotn of the elderly, I analyzed the possibility and necessity (physically and psychologically) to release some of the private function into the public passages in apartment buildings of the elderly. In this way, the lonely and solitude living situation of the elderly can be improved and the limited space and function of their original home can be compensated.
Usage Typologies Typology 1 Depth: 1.5m-2m
CURRENT SITUATION 1: USAGE OF PUBLIC CORRIDORS (1)The active semi-public space can be an extension of the indoor space, thus relieve the limitation of the lacking indoor space. (2)The active semi-public space can improve the communication between the neighborhood, which is beneficial to the elderly both mentally and physiologically. It will be easier for them to take care of each other due to the daily interaction in the public passages.
Yards of this size are always covered by reconstructed roofs, using for storage or extended balcony. It's not common for people to stay in such narrow yards.
Typology 2 Depth: 3m-4m Yards of this size are always used for planting trees or flowers. Family activities in yards are very common, as well as the neighborhood communication across the yard fences.
Typology 3 Depth: 4.5m-6m Yards of this size are of various functions such as parking or building new rooms. Family activities in yards are common. But due to the enclosure of thick plantation or boards, neighborhood communication is not common.
Typology 1
14200mm*1400mm
Due to the lack of lamps and the absence of window, the light in this corridor is very dark. Except for two bicycles, having no alternative choice, nothing is placed along this corridor.
Typology 3
Typology 2
14200mm*1400mm
Thanks to the comfortable light intensity, neighborhood communication is common in this corridor. Though the corridor is quite narrow, piles of living goods are placed here.
14400mm*1500mm Typology 4
Different layouts of the passage ways between residents builings may result in different publicity and using frequency. (1)Greenbelt-Passage-Greenbelt Layout: Since the greenbelt is too close to other residents' windows, it seems impolite andunlikely for acitivities to take place on the greenbelt. (2)Passage-Greenbelt-Passage Layout: Since the publicity of the greenbelt is separated from the residents' window, it is of higher publicity and more activities are likely to take place on the greenbelt.
22800mm*2400mm
Facing a large open playground, this corridor enjoys great view. However, This corridor broader and the light here is friendly. Since this passage since it is at the opposite side of the entrance doors, it cannot be used connects both private rooms and public toilets, residents use it frequently. effectively. Nothing is placed here. Many living goods are placed here.

This project is an urban complex based on Nanjing Maqun Transfer Center. The main concept is to reallocate the density and FAR of this area. From north to south, the decreasing density of the city can be clearly perceived on the main passages. From busy commuting and offices to shopping malls, to community centers, and to residential area, the spatial atmosphere is altering and the living pace is slowing down. This diverse experiences through the main streets reprsent the great charm of a city.

Urban Fantacy for Dubai Along with the extremely rapic urbanism, Dubai people are experiencing the loss of their traditional life. It seems that they can do all kinds of entertainment and consume all kinds of goods in their huge airconditioned halls. However, the fact is that many local Dubai people are feeling empty in their current lives. In this project, I was trying to introduce their common memory back into their life, especially the original happiness of outdoor life. The park is shaded by several floors, thus provide more comfortable environment and cut down the land occupation. Warious traditional activities are included.

Over time, the housing system in Athens has merged with small scale businesses and a particular typology came into being. We seek to address this vernacular typology by challenging its status quo and injecting new forms, generated by complex systems thinking, into the fabric of Athens. New models of organization are put forward to discuss the ever expanding needs of citizens of all exonomic classes during the intense recession that Greece currently faces. On the face of this new typology is a new media that connects architecture to the contemporary challenges of global capitalist societies.

04 ANO ATLANTIDE
EVOLO Competition, 2017 Group Work (with Ce Li, Jiahua Xu)
Today, human activities such as trawling and mining are affecting delicate sea ecosystem. Heavy equipments are designed to actively bull-doze the seafloor. The process damaged species and habitats, and stirs up large amounts of sediment. Ano Atlantide is aiming at restoring the ecosystem of the sea bed. Its core is a working platform extracting minerals from the sea bed and sea water. The platform transforms minerals into compounds that could extrude and solidify underwater, forms a topologically continuous undersea skyscraper that grows upward all the way to the sea level.
