What’s Inside

Greetings from the Singapore Sports Council (SSC)! I’m very pleased and excited to present to you this inaugural issue of ActiveSG (West Zone) – a monthly sports lifestyle newsletter catering to the residents in the West. Every month, we endeavour to bring you stories on inspirational sportsmen, and roundups of events happening around your area. It will also have a comprehensive listing of sports interest groups, as well as activities and programmes organized by ActiveSG (West Zone). The SSC is working tirelessly to bring sports to more people by creating facilities and making them more accessible for all to use and enjoy. We have also created wide-ranging programmes and opportunities for all citizens to take part in sports and activities at community level. This will not only make our communities more cohesive but it will also develop a national passion for sports and foster a healthy lifestyle. We hope through this newsletter, you’ll be able to participate in the array of activities offered, learn a new sport and ultimately, forge

A Nation United In Sports Singapore’s reputation as a well-planned nation with world-class infrastructure goes beyond the tourist attractions and the financial hub; it also extends to sports facilities for the full benefit of its people.

T

here is no reason why Singaporeans should not take up any sports or take to exercising. In the same manner that Singapore has grown as a formidable economic power in the region by creating a financial hub and a business-friendly environment, it has also made great strides in building and improving the sports infrastructures for its citizens. Today, Singapore is considered as one of the most inclusive sports nations. The Singapore Sports Council (SSC) has been at the forefront of this movement to make sports more accessible to all and sundry. This is made possible by building facilities and allowing greater public access to those facilities; creating wide-ranging programmes for Singaporeans of all ages; and creating more opportunities

for all citizens to take part in sports. So, whether you’re an entry-level athlete or an elite competitor, the SSC has something for you. With all these initiatives, the SSC has transformed the way Singaporeans view and participate in sports. Sports have truly become a way of life for many Singaporeans. Many are picking up a sport; whether be it football, basketball or running, Singaporeans are becoming more active in a way or another. Through sports, we have also become a more cohesive society. Nowadays, we see greater participation in mass events like marathons, cycling races and other activities like zumba or line dancing. This is also made possible through the creation of Sports and Recreation Centres, park connectors, and the likes which ultimately bring the

2 ActiveSG • december 2013

community closer through communityled initiatives and programmes. Likewise through sports, Singapore now has a constant source of national pride as a result of high performance results by our homegrown athletes at international and regional games. Companies are also beginning to see the values and benefits that sports has over their employees, with some actively pursuing recreational sporting activities for the staff to partake in. Hence, with the New Year just round the corner, there is no better time than now to set your resolution and jump on the ‘healthy lifestyle bandwagon’. With the many sports programs, events you can participate in and facilities that you can utilize, it is time to put those boots on and live better through sports!

facilities in focus

sports jewel in the west

Mention Jurong West, and heavy duty industrial buildings will come instantly into mind. However, you may be surprised that it is also home to the biggest integrated sports centre in Singapore – the Jurong West Sports & Recreation Club (JWSRC).

L

ocated conveniently next to Pioneer MRT station, the Jurong West Sports and Recreation Centre (JWSRC) is a fully integrated sports centre which offers an extensive range of sporting facilities and amenities. It has a Stadium, Sports Hall, Aquatic Centre, Tennis Courts, Dance Studios and a ClubFITT Gym. However, the facilities are no good at all if nobody is using them. In that regard, the JWSRC lets you engage in sports and leisure activities at convenient times and at affordable rates. Besides popular sports such as jogging, swimming and badminton, the extensive sports complex also offers courses such as Cardio, Body & Mind and even social dance. Evident from its large enrolment, Learn-To-Play

(LTP) programmes like Aqua Aerobics and Cardio Mix are very popular with Jurong residents. Jurong West SRC goes beyond being a sports facility to a community facility. It sets the direction of Singapore Sports Council in providing top-notch facilities to give residents an all-encompassing experience. Retail and F&B outlets - Japanese restaurant Ni Hon Mura, sports retailer Sportslink private dance school Dancepointe, and MMI (Montessori) Childcare Centre - complements the sports facilities to a tee, making the JWSRC a one-stop lifestyle destination for people living in the west of SIngapore. Stadium The Jurong West Stadium seats 3,178 spectators and apart from the football field, the stadium has an eight-lane, 400m running track that you can use, free of charge, for jogging. The stadium is opened from 4.30am to 9.30pm.

courts for hire, which will definitely meet the demand for most occasions. They can also be converted to three basketball/ volleyball/netball courts. In addition, the multi-purpose Sports Hall has two dance studios, two tennis courts and two meeting rooms. The Satellite Sports Museum pays tribute to Singapore’s sporting heroes, and houses unique sports memorabilia. Also located within the complex is the ClubFitt Gym. Covering 955 square metres, or about the size of about 10 fourroom HDB flats, it is one of the largest ClubFitt gyms in Singapore. The ClubFitt Gym at Jurong West offers a sizeable selection of workout machines, cardio machines and free weights. Ladies, there’s a special section within the gym just for you! This is something that is unique to JWSRC. Now, you can do stretches and light exercises with much privacy. The ladies’ section has stretching mats, kettlebells and dumbbells. Swimming Complex The Jurong West Swimming Complex is one of the few SRCs which houses special water features such as a lazy river, children’s water play area with themed interactive water sculpture and a jacuzzi pool. There are many pools for various purposes including a teaching pool, wadding pool and a competition pool. With the competition pool being fully sheltered, it helps to keep one away from the blazing sun.

An unexpected guest! A day at Jurong West SRC got everyone excited when a Pink Flamingo waded its way calmly into the swimming pool and stayed on for a cool 45 minutes! While the unprecedented visit of the big bird brought inconvenience to some guests, it was definitely a rare sight that brought smiles to many.

Joining The Best men and Zumba for the women. In addition, as part of the overall objectives to create a stronger bond amongst family members, events and activities are organised for father and son to participate and to compete as well. We believe through football and the Warriors’ programmes, besides providing a platform to benefit families, there was also a significant increase in the involvement of different ethnic groups and foreigners. Q: Apart from the Young Warriors and Kids Warriors Programme and playing in the S-League, how do you think Warriors FC can extend their outreach to the people?

Football is undoubtedly one of Singapore’s favourite sports and with that in mind, the Football Sports Interest Group will definitely be a hit. And if you need further reasons to join, this Sports Interest Group in time will be working with private sports club such as the Warriors Football Club (Warriors FC), the most successful club in the history of the S-League.

W

arriors FC has a proven track record in community outreach programmes. They collaborated with the ActiveSG (West Zone) to conduct football programmes, Young Warriors and KidzWarrior, and the club look forward to adding the Football Sports Interest Group to their portfolio. We spoke with Warriors FC General Manager Chong Wei Chiang, and got his take on the club’s community projects, plans for the Football Sports Interest Group, and the outlook on the sports landscape in Singapore. Q: Tell us, what exactly are the Young Warriors and KidzWarriors Programme? A: Both Young Warriors and KidzWarriors Programme are community based football clinics for kids organised by Warriors Football Club in which the following objectives are to be maintained: Promoting football to the youths in the community as healthy lifestyle and social cohesion; Fostering community bonding through the active involvement of parents also in the project; Cultivating interest by providing the opportunity for talented

boys and girls to be nurtured into football stars of the future and most of all, Character Building through football in developing their skills and positive values for them to excel in life. Q: How many years have Warriors FC been conducting the programme? Since 2004, Warriors FC have been organising the programmes with different stakeholders over the years. Warriors started the programme named Budding Stars with South West CDC and underwent a rebranding exercise in late 2005 and renamed the programme to KidzWarriors in 2006 to reach out to more kids in the community other than those residing in South West District. Q: Any particular success story to share? I.e. A trainee going on to star in your S-League team? A: From the observation made during the conduct of the programme, it was apparent that the right values were being imparted to the youths. Erwan Gunawan who was with the Under-12 programme is now with the Warriors S-League team and was called up for National Team recently. Other players such as Ruzaini and Hyrulnizam have also made appearances for the National squad or the Lions XII team. Q: From your perspective, how did football help the community? A: When the programme is conducted on Sunday morning, not only are the kids having a good time on the field, the programme also enables the parents to participate in Warriors’ organised programmes such as futsal for the

4 ActiveSG • december 2013

A: Besides conducting outreach programmes to school (where coaches and players are sent to school to conduct football clinics), Warriors FC also work with the under-privileged organisations such as Moral Welfare Homes and Delta Senior School, in conducting football clinics and football activities for the students and residents. Over the years, Warriors FC have been fetching those under-privileged to Choa Chu Kang (CCK) stadium to watch Live football matches and participate in activities. Q: What do you think of the Football Interest Group that ActiveSG (West Zone) is developing? A: I would think that the ActiveSG (West Zone) is trying to get as many people as possible to play football at the stadium. Though it might not be competitive football to be played, the main idea is to bring back the past ‘kampong’ football, so that football could still be played with lots of fun and meaning. Through peer influence, the interest group would then able to expand the pool of enthusiasts and develop more interests among the community in playing football. Q: How do you think Warriors FC will be able to help to spur or generate interest in the Football Sports Interest Group? A: As demonstrated in Warriors FC’s KidzWarriors programme, besides providing quality football programmes for the kids (primary concern of parents), for them to have fun, stay active and develop their football skills, the program aids in their character development such as leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. Warriors FC could contribute to value add to the programmes conducted for kids such as organizing ‘tele-matches’ with a bit of army flavour from time to time to inject more spice.

As for the Interest Group, providing FUN and COMPETITIVE football is key. Warriors FC could help by organising allyear round football league for competitive footballers, to ensure the sustainability of the program with a fun element. Also, the Interest Group could also explore playing at Choa Chu Kang stadium, the same pitch as played by S-League players, which might help to generate interest. On that note, having a good pitch might also help, such as converting the current field

to an artificial pitch. Another suggestion would be for Warriors FC to screen a live football match at the stadium, such as the current EPL matches and the 2014 World Cup for example, to spur more interest in getting football enthusiasts to join the Interest Group. Q: Looking forward, what is Warriors FC’s hope for the sports landscape in Singapore?

A: Warriors FC would wish to establish a Club that belongs to the community. Looking at the Barcelona model in which the city besides represented by a world-class football club, other professional sports such as Basketball and Handball also donning the same colour as the football club. Warriors FC would also love to involve more sports at CCK stadium and position CCK Sports and Recreation Centre (CCKSRC) as an all encompassing sports facility, not just for its football programs but other sports as well. Hence, besides organising football leagues for the football enthusiasts, the same could apply to badminton, basketball, tennis, table tennis, swimming and running as well, regardless of individual or team sports. On that note, Warriors FC aims to inculcate a weekday of ‘family sporting day’, whereby family members would mark down on their calendar to do sports at CCKSRC on that particular day. A sporting culture must be established within the family and the community, be it to participate or to spectate.

Talk of the town

‘It’s Fun to be Fit’ Open House It was a smorgasbord of sports at the Fun to be Fit Open House 2013. More than 14,000 people tried their hands at the various free sports activities such as Taichi, Basketball and Zumba at the 3 Sports and Recreation Centres in the Western region of Singapore.

T

he event, organised by ActiveSG (West Zone), also allowed the public to experience the facilities at Jurong West Sports and Recreation Centre (SRC), Choa Chu Kang SRC, as well as Jurong East SRC. In addition, the event presented a convenient avenue for people to sign up for trial on membership. The event presents a ‘sports buffet’ where the public could partake in the different sports tryouts for free. With sports such as badminton, tennis, floorball, basketball and so on, the public had a ball with the professional coaches giving a tip or two on how the game is played. Dance sports such as Zumba, Bokwa are also hugely popular among the ladies. In attendance at the Open House 2013 was Mr Lawrence Wong, Acting Minister for Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information, where he also tried his hands on a game of tennis. Other special guests at this event include players from the Singapore Slingers team, Desmond Oh and Delvin Goh, as well as ex-national footballers Lionel Lewis, S. Subramani and Aleksandar Duric. Indeed, “It’s Fun to be Fit” Open House 2013 has certainly made sports more accessible to the public and entice their interest to the variety of sports programmes available.
