It has taken a while but Hermes has finally launched its first dedicated men’s store. Located around the corner of Madison Avenue in New York, the four-storey boutique is described by artistic director Veronique Nichanian as a ‘walk-in wardrobe’. Dedicated to men’s ready-to-wear and accessories, the 2,450-sq ft boutique evokes the look of the original Hermes store at 24 Faubourg Saint-Honore. The first and second levels stock essentials like shirts, accessories and small leather goods while the third and fourth levels cater to made-to-measure tailoring and formalwear.

Coach is opening its first men’s store in Manhattan in May. Spanning 550sq ft, the boutique’s interior will flaunt a residential-like setting to match the old-school facade of its Bleecker Street locale. Customers can expect apparel, footwear and watches on top of bags and small leather goods.

The neat part is its simulation webpage where users can create virtual models of a Keepall travel bag, Speedy bag or Pegase luggage. Enter one’s initials and mix-and-match the type of vertical or horizontal stripes in 17 different colours. To order, customers can print out the simulated design like an order sheet and take it to the nearest LV store.

Two local creative brands, SMG and :phunk studio designed one-off Casio G-shocks for Casio’s recent Shock the World tour – a global showcase-cumparty. Streetwear-lifestyle upstart SMG, founded by singer JJ Lin, collaborated with Japanese cult street label Devilock to release two watches inspired by their brand stories and signature colours. Meanwhile, :phunk studio paid tribute to the genius of the creative community with an all-white ensemble and a “please steal this watch” slogan on the strap.

Offering the most comfortable footwear to zip around town in, Car Shoe makes its long-anticipated debut at ION Orchard Let’s face it. Those sleek lace up Oxfords might be great for the office,
but step out of air-conditioned comforts and they are as comfortable as straitjackets. Tropical weather calls for alternative footwear after hours and clued-in fashionistos know that a good pair of driving shoes is the best bet for both style and comfort. Lucky for us, the brand that makes them the way they are meant to be is finally coming to Singapore.
Modern Icon
Car Shoe’s designs are arguably the most copied in the world as evident by the proliferation of similar designs even among prominent footwear brands. Founded in 1963 by Gianni Mostile, it is best known for its iconic soft leather moccasins whose soles bear rubber nubs that run to the back of the heel. Born out of the Italian shoemaker’s passion for fast cars and handmade footwear, they were purposefully built to withstand wear and tear when he puts his feet on the pedal. Gianni’s revolutionary design earned a patent and also the adulation from the likes of Gianni Agnelli, John F. Kennedy and Roberto Rossellini. In 2001, Car Shoe caught the eye of Miucca Prada and Patrizio Bertelli – the husband-and-wife team behind Prada – who took the brand under their wing. In no time, the Vigeveno-based label was catapulted to the upper echelons of high fashion. The power couple opened posh Car Shoe flagship stores in Milan, Rome and Capri, introduced the brand to over 200 major boutiques worldwide, and expanded its product line to include boots, sneakers, leather goods and bags. The Car Shoe boutique at ION Orchard is its first flagship boutique in Asia and stocks the full collection like its foreign counterparts. Still under construction at press time, the 154-sqm outlet promises to be a reflection of its Milan flagship. Conceptualised by architect Roberto Baciocchi who has been designing Prada and Miu Miu stores since 1982, the ION store will evoke vintage car interiors with luxurious glossy wood panelling that recalls a dashboard and quaint leather chairs shaped like old school car seats.

Success has not spoilt Car Shoe. Its wares are still handcrafted by Italian artisans like it was 47 years ago. To preserve quality and comfort, the company eschews mechanical processes and relies on time-honoured shoemaking traditions, using only the finest materials from premium hides to top-grade rubber mix for the sole. Each shoe is put together with 160 hand stitches using 4.85m of English pitch-treated cord. The modern Car Shoe also inherited its founder’s inventive spirit. A prime example is the Monogram CS 1.0 programme – its new bespoke service. Available for the first time in South-east Asia, it employs an innovative computerised system to offer mindboggling customisable options for its sporty CS trainers. Everything from materials (such as suede, leather and nylon), colours, and lettered or numbered monograms can be personalised on a computer. A touch screen with 3D renderings of the shoe helps collect and store custom changes; custom pairs are ready in four weeks. For instant gratification, however, check out the driving moccasins and sneakers in supple suede and buttery soft leather. Whether from the poolside or the comfort of one’s deluxe suite (below), the resort offers the best views of Sun Moon Lake
Indeed, the resort’s blend of Zen aesthetics and tropical rusticity bodes well for quiet contemplation. Kerry calls its design an “ongoing style” of architecture, which advocates a timeless style of moving forward, such that the resort’s look and feel remain relevant even after 20 years. The guest suites, located below the lobby, extend down the floors (minus level 4, a number considered inauspicious in Chinese culture) toward the lake. Each suite is adorned with cherry wood panelling from floor to ceiling, accentuated with vases of white orchids. The spacious balcony faces the lake, but feels more like a pavilion. Located on the rooftop of an adjoining building are exclusive villas, with private 12-m pools, outdoor pavilions and courtyards. Each villa’s moon-shaped gateway leads to a sanctuary that includes a large, square bathtub partially sunken into the floor, a wide vanity counter and a fireplace. Besides a fully equipped fitness centre, the resort also has a spa that offers organic treatments using traditional herbs and natural extracts like ginger, rice wine and green tea. Near the 60m-long and 8m-wide infinity swimming pool that extends into the lake, a traditional teahouse overlooks a pond teeming with water lilies and fringed by lush foliage. For dining, you have a choice of either the resort’s Oriental Brasserie, a Japanese restaurant, or the Lake View Chinese Restaurant. Local produce such as fresh mushrooms, cabbage and aruzay fish tend to find their way into the restaurants’ menus. While The Lalu is certainly cosy enough for you to remain within its confines, Sun Moon Lake has much to offer to less sedate travellers. You can rent a bicycle to ride around the lake or stroll along the lakeside trails, stopping to explore temples like the Wenwu and Xuanzang, as well as attractions like the Ci En Pagoda and Plum Lotus Garden.
