facade located in the Soho distrct, NYC. It have a fourbay design that connect the Soho bay rhythem, while multiple squared opening that was designed to"break the grid". The right bay is where the major core and important conference space located. A tilted roof visually connects the two surrounding buildings.

2 Urban Parts and Whole

Downtown Syracuse, NY A makerspace-gallery complex locate in the heart of Syracuse that welcomes the public. Spring, 2017

At a corner street located in downtown syracuse, I designed a building next to the Clinton square. A lot of curved geomoetry were used to st focus to the monument. The makerspace volumn made of glass was cutted in to the red brick material that connects the surrounding buildings.

Perspective

Considering more trafic would be located on one side, I set the main focus on one side instead of center. On the back of the design is two main red brick building where the lecture hall, office spaces and public indoor lecture hall spaces are located. The difference of the building heights makes it blend into the surrounding buildings, as well as provide a roof garden space for the public.

3 Folding Planes

Syracuse, NY A Thornden Community Arts Center located on the edge of the Syracuse University. Fall, 2017

Started from developing a tectonic system, I made the study model by folding paper and notches, which build up a self-supporting system without glue.I use the same language but adding more complexity into my final model.

The site sit on the edge of the Syracuse University campus and Thornden Park.. It relate on one side to the university and and its art facilities such as the SU MakerSpace and Light Work, and on the other side to the park - with amenities including basketball courts, a swimming pool, and an amphitheater. Located on the seam between these two contrasting settings, I found an interesting balance on the two sides - density, function zone, and geography. I tried to reproduce it in my design as a tool to distinguish hierarchy in the complex.

4 Rethink Fold Spaces

” = 1’-0”

Syracuse, NY A Southside Community Art Center located in a less developed community. Fall, 2017

Going back to the prototype model from last project, I combine the folding technique with the study model I made for the site analysis. Different activities represented by different density intersecting with the major core, which represent the South Salina street that connect the site with downtown. In my final design, I turn the major core into the skylight that runs all the way through the building. Formally, the void is also the intersection of the three major blocks formed by folded surfaces. The thick, stripped folding surfaces communicate the fragments of the building together as well as contrasting with the glazing surfaces.

The library is the most "outstanding" part in the whole design. It cantilever over the entrance, which makes it obvious from the street, even from distance. Although it is in the same building with the rest of the design, it breaks the rhythm of the floor plates, which makes it only approachable from the first floor, but can be seen through glass from the rest of the building. The bigger block contains studios, and the smaller block is composed by gallery space with classroom on top. The basement is for faculty. Together they wrapped around the trapezoid intersection, which is void through the building, and used as conference room in the basement.

? Studio State

The Studio State, ?? A critical project that comments on today's society and its formal constitution. Summer, 2017 More about the project: issuu.com/studiostate/docs/ studiostate instagram.com/aastudiostate Group Members: Aysenur Onaran, Giles Reed, Haoran Wang, Laila Apene Feitoza, Moe Omiya, Niveda Karuppuswamy, Rachelle DiGregorio, Ramya Kumar, Rewa Ratea Sofia Leijonberg, Stephanie Baer, Xiaoqing Xu

Tutors Benjamin Groothuijse David Schmidt Korbinian Kainz

During the three weeks of the project, the Studio State is declared as a micro-nation in the studio in the Architectural Association. We explored the definition of a nation, by study into Utopian, anarchistic, artistic and theoretical project. It is not only a response to, but becomes itself a direct expression of an architecture of now. The Studio, has always been a safe space for the development of critical ideas. The premise of the Studio State subverts this safe space into a political one by the ceremonious act of declaring its territory a State. By using the critical potential of satire through means such as exaggeration, absurdism, parody, juxtaposition, reversal, comparison, analogy or double entendre to bring to the surface current and controversial issues of our times, the project stands in direct dialectic relationship with the State which it has claimed its independance.

A The Crest is an emblem of the State and visually captures and summarises various elements that have symbolic value to the State. It is then used to represent the State at the press conference where the flower piece strengthens the careful arrangement that makes up yje visual relay of the State in the Media. B The Vault Monument plays on the iconic Imagery of data centres that are, although uniquitous, rarely seen or experienced in person. C The Wheel of Fortune has its roots in medieval and ancient philosophy, but in the Studio State its iteration plays on the visual language of the later appropriation of the wheel for entertainment. D Word of mouth communication replacing the media is exemplified in the Studio State by an analog play on the possibly of anonymity in online communication and jokingly subverts it. E The Pen used for the signing of the Declaration of the State at the very beginning of the Studio State was its initial artefact. In an act of mythification, it and its colour then became central to the States' identity. F The Wall was initially developed from an engagement with the giver material of corrugated card. G The Press Conference was hold on the last day of the summer school and put together the project in the presentation.
