Platform For Continuation of Artist Support

ART HOUSE

Individual Project Instructor: VPPR 09/2017- 12/2017, Location: Chelsea, New York ,USA

While New York City is in the throes of a housing crisis, the art market is booming. If New York wants to preserve its position as a hub for art production and not only as an art market, then it is incumbent on big arts institutions, endowed with capital, reach, fund-raising expertise and powerful, glamorous brands, to address this issue. Dia Art Foundation, as an organization that would support a group of artists to create projects "whose nature or scale would preclude other funding sources, reflects the development of Chelsea as a triumph of commercial galleries region and how it supports, commissions and preserves art projects with a constellation of sites. My general proposal is for the continuation of Dia's artist support, through the creation of artist housing.

Space Behind Fabric

SWITCH

Chapter1 Hidden Negative Sace Rachel Whiteread typically casts domestic objects and their negative spaces, solidifying open spaces and details in architecture. For example, her artwork Switch is the cast of what’s behind a switch on the wall, which is something people usually ignore. In such cases, there are many hidden spaces with great potential in modern museums like MOMA, and then I tried to find those hidden spaces and cast them out with plaster and resin, like spaces between artwork and walls, gaps between guidebooks in one container, space inside the key hole and plugs, and what’s above and below a bench etc. These physical models can reflect space and art in a negative way.

Based on Rachel's technique, I tried to find and select some objects and then cast their negative and hidden spaces out. Casting negative space reveals a reversed way to analyze void and solidity and the in-between relation. Meanwhile, it reflects the materiality of positive art and inverse relation of artwork's geometrical pattern and spatial relation between art and building. The final installation of first phase is the negative space behind a painting. I used plaster to cast the space between artwork and wall, revealing a negative pattern of frame and paint. The wrinkling surface indicates a different materiality in contrast with the smooth trace of frame, and pattern of nail. The solid plaster model is actually the inverse of a canvas painting. The contrast of materiality and demateriality, and lightness and thickness is the fun of casting negative spaces.

Chapter2 Dwelling On Dwelling In the second exercise I looked at Dominican Motherhouse designed by Louis Kahn. It is an unbuilt project with symmetrical living dormitory and different rotated blocks individually occupied by different programs. These five main blocks are related one another in order to produce several external spaces of diverse shapes and size, which generates unexpected residual public spaces.

The whole 3d drawing appears like a solid box while containing void architectural form and space inside. The positive architecture indicates the emphasis of those public spaces by using unorthogonal geometric pattern. While in the negative model, the orthogonal dormitory can imply its existence for its long continuous gap in the solid box.

Chapter3 Dwelling On Museum Dia art foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports, commission and preserves art projects with a constellation of sites. My proposal stands for the continuation of artist support, through the creation of artist housing. Chelsea is a triumph of commercial galleries and residential housing, emerging from a wasted industrial region. The conflict between accessibility of artist housing, high costs and little space suggests artist housing is incompatible with city’s urban context. Based on what I did in first and second phases, my general proposal is to create a thick facade, using dia’s two original one-storey gallery 541&545, to accommodate artists. The elevation is inverse urban context, casting negative pattern of street facade.

The proposal includes permanent cores and moveable partitions in living space, flexible for artist to organize their life. There are four fixed cores, restroom with one bed, on each floor. The remaining space is all communal. Private life is probably similar on each floor, while communal living varies on account of diverse shape of the wall.

Studio And Bedroom With fixed sleeping area, the size of studio is changeable. Maybe it is just one work desk next to bed, or a single large room for larger work or cooperative art.

My proposal for Dia intends to introduce a unique typology where artists and gallery can mutually function together to create a unique platform for living and exhibition where the production and consumption of art happen side by side.

There are three layers, the minimal gallery, the artist housing, and curve walls in the middle where the two programs intersect. The curved walls represent central activities, which is also the communal program of artist housing, and the partitions of the gallery. The complexed living environment distinguishes from clear white minimal gallery.

DUAL-REVIVAL

Group Project Instructor: Haiqing Li Co-worker: Yinxing Xu 02/2016- 04/2016, Location: Xuzhou, Jiangsu, China My Role: Preliminary Survey and Typological Research, Conceptual Design, Basic drawings and perspectives, Part of Physical model ,Architectural Representation.

The site is located near Lake Weishan in Xuzhou, a famous tourist resort. In the past, this region was developed industrializedly for making bricks, leaving tons of wasted kilns waiting for a new spring. Meanwhile, cutural Heritage--Suona in Pei County in Xuzhou is declining, which is one essential traditional element in civic ceremony. By reconstructing the kilns, we hope the culture of Suona can revive as well. That's what Dual-Revival mean--renaissance of both industrial Hoffman kiln and cultural heritage Suona.

Suona, as traditional cultural heritage, is gradually forgotten, especially in Pei County in Xuzhou--hometown of Suona. Not far from the site, there is a suona school. Activities using Suona are disparate in different season.

Slack seasonDaily activities Due to tuorism season, human distributiion and activity vary greatly. Thus, besides cultural tourism, community participation also counts a lot.

New structure connection

Breaking parts and activities

Original kilns are not connected and are on different height, and interior space is unexpectedly appealing. Thus, we aim to keep the kiln intact and do the least harm on original structure. So, the first thing we want to do is to connect two kilns. Then, in case of verbose circulation, the kiln is broken into several parts, each of which is in charge of one main function. New structure corresponds to the brick arch, and meanwhile contrasts with kiln's geometric form.

KINETIC ART

Individual Project Instructor: Beisi Jia Hongkong University Co-teach Studio 11/2015- 01/2016, Location: Nanjing, Jiangsu, China The site is located in Houchong Village in Nanjing, Jiangsu, with beautiful scenery and traditional Nanjing dwellings. There are great landscape elements like crop fields, river crossing the village and small bridges over the stream, contributing to an amenity and tranquil environment. The studio is focused on how kinetic mechanisms cowork with architecture, and responds with human lives. The project will analyse human demands and then put emphasis on changes of function and space under interventions of time and behavior.

The village accomodates many traditional artists mastering skills including wood-carving, crafts-making and Chinese painting. Due to the scenic environment, this place attracts many artists and students for sketching as well. Thus, they will require different functional space towards differnt behaviors and identities. It needs to discuss how to satisfy so much demands in one architecture, making the building self-satisfied.

Selecting B&B as prototype, I want to design some things more than a house. The project avoids to block the relation between river and small plaza, so the order is formed---fixed components follow the direction connecting river and plaza and kinetic parts can move freely. Those fixed equipment like pipeline and electric wires hide in the static component. One static part and one kinetic component mutually form one living unit. A single unit contains basic living facilities and spaces for creation. So, the project will have diversed forms due to the combination of changeable units.

Requalification Of Region Around The Aurelian Wall From Day To Night

THE WALL PROJECT

Group Project Instructor: Peng Tang, Yang Shen Co-worker: Yiran Qiao China-Italy Co-teach Studio 09/2015- 11/2015, Location: Rome, Italy My Role: Survey and Research, Conceptual Design, Basic drawings and all perspectives, Part of Physical models, Final Architectural Representation. The site is located in the southwest of Rome, which is an important historical site in Italy. During the process of urban modernization, this region, which was once energetic all over a year, left many problems unsolved. Ancient Wall, Mountain Testaccio, the Tiber River, subway station and commercial blocks, all representing glorious past, mix together in this area. Now the site is a place where refugee and wasteyard dwells. But it shows a different appearance with energetic and prosperous nightlife in the night. Thus, this project is aimed to regenerate the lively atmosphere in the region, by reprogramming and coordinating different activities from day to night.

Strategy In this special historic site, according to former research and investigation, we will keep, or transform properly, some meaningful and functional buildings, then demolish those which are disordered and blocked, and finally design some new architecture based on regional texture. Due to original traffic system and natural conditions, the site is divided into five parts, all of which will be transformed on the basis of features and situations in day and night. The five regions will be connected continuously by Green lane system, so people are able to walk around the whole site. Then, regenerate the area by combining green lane with city road system, introducing people wandering in the site.

Information Delivery

This region generally belongs to output area for information by network, big screen and advertising hot air balloon. It contains marketing, art and performance activities. In daytime, it releases academic news and lecture information, and announcement of night activities. The whole region mainly serves for college students, attending lectures and academic discussion. And students will autonomously sell some products in the market. In night, the region serves for the whole city. Various suspending advertisement and network dissemination mutually attract people to come to the site, watching shows and exhibitions, purchasing, and offering art activities.

T h e A u re l i a n Wa l l , a s a h i s t o r i c a l landmark, is transformed into a linear park. Out of the subway station, the first sight people can see is the huge pyramid, aggregating people from various direction. What's more, it will be a wonderful place for surrounding dwellers walking and strolling. In daytime, based on cycling, I set selling store and charging station along and attached to the Wall. Pedestrian and riding system is separated. In night, local residents and people attracted will walk along the Wall.

Activity Production

Attached to the Mountain, separating green lane and vehicles, the upper layer works in the daytime as sports shops and commercial stores. And it provides paths for people climbing the mountain. In night, keeping original activities, the under layer functions as bars popular in Rome city.

This area is transformed into a place mainly for sports activities. Green lane for cycling is set on the roof of architecture, avoiding interweaving with walking lane. In daytime, this place serves as sports playground open to college students. In night, noctilucent stadium, mingling with commercial activities, is open to the whole city.

Renovation of Pukou Railway Station From City To Wilderness

URBAN MUSEUM

Individual Project Instructor: Li Bao 02/2015- 04/2015, Location: Nanjing, Jiangsu, China

Pukou Railway Station represents a period of memory of old Nanjing, now becoming a wasteland in city. Around the station, many elderly people live in these old residential areas where in the past they are dynamic and lively. However, due to big traffic volume in this area, they have fewer public walking and resting places. Thus, except for reforming into transportation museum to commemorate the old station, I want to provide an open place for this region to recall the old civic Nanjing as well. The project emphasizes on the transition from crowded city to the wild, providing a roaming park museum gradually hide into nature.

City Wilderness----City Section

This place is one of the representatives of wasteland in city, unable to follow the pace of urbanization and modernization. Surrounded by residential blocks, it becomes a wild place in urban environment. Thus, I want to reorganize the place transiting from city texture into nature atmosphere.

Empower Fish Habitat in Oceanic System

BEACHES IN NEW YORK

Group Project with Yinxing Xu Tutor: Andres Jaque 06/2017- 08/2017, Location: Rockaway, New York ,USA

Environmental crisis in Jamaica Bay, like oil leakage, eutrophication, air pollution and salt marsh loss harms the oceanic fish habitat. My proposal is to enhance fish habitat through different layers. Thus, we intervene a water treatment ring in Jamaica Bay with different activities. First, we deal with water quality to empower the habitat- wetland, the main shelter for fish. Salt marshes decreased a lot because of the outfall of sewage water, containing Nitrogen and Phosphorus dissolving wetland. Oyster is the natural way to treat Nitrogen and Phosphorus, so the primary treatment in ring is oyster farm and sea-grass raise. Hence, water outside the ring is polluted while inside is clean and shelter for fish larva. Next, we transform leaking oil into a new landscape scenario by filtering ocean water through those plants attaching oil molecule, and finally water become clean. On the ring, there are many water-related programs, like restaurant, concert stage and sports activity.

I. Human Performance Towards Oceanic Hospitality Oceanic system provides all kinds of leisurement food and recreation to human lives. While human activities usually give a negative effect in water. In the long run, coastal or bay water quality becomes worse and worse. In Jamaica Bay, certain kinds of activities influence water quality and fish habitat, especially marina and yacht and water traetment plants as well as illegal fishing, which turns into a headache for local government. Overfishing and unfavorable fish habitat account for the great loss in fish amount.

II. Oceanic Environmental Crisis In Fish Habitat

The great reduction in region of salt marshes directly leads to the decreasing of fish amount and fish birth. While the reason of such reduction may blame many phenonmenon as a result of human activity such as oil leakage, eutrophication, air pollution harming the oceanic fish habitat.

Eutrophication will consume the oxygen for fish in water and release more carbon dioxide to the air, and oil leakage will directly kill the fish larva, which results in the low or even negative birth rate. Vessel debris will leave some harmful metal in the water.

III. Empower Fish Habitat In Jamaica Bay The intervention is a floating ring with a radium of three kilometers in Jamaica Bay floating with tides. We design many human activities on such ring, and all of those activities correspond with water quality. And the basic function of this ring is to clean water in Jamaica Bay, removing oil and algae and harmful chemicals. In the ring, clean water will become a new healthy habitat for fish to reproduce.

All human activities happen on the ring. Recreational fish will be monitored under the workers on the ring. According to water quality in different time, different activities are operated in the ring. But there are some fixed events such as restaurant, running, wandering in the park and concert. Water outside the ring is dirty and polluted, while water in the middle has been cleaned by the first step. Purified for almost a month, middle water can become clean and then released into the center.

Oyster Raise

Oyster Purify

The basic and natural purification strategy is through sea grass and oysters. Sea grass can absorb the large particles in the water as one of the first step. The valve can control the flow of water so that the water purification time can be controlled. Oyster is the key to purifying water. One oyster can filter up to 50 gallons water per day, by pumping large volumes of water through their body. They remove algae and nutrients, making water clearer for sea-grass.

CHILDREN'S HOUSE Studio: House Individual Project Tutor: Xiaoyang Chen 09/2013- 11/2013, Location: Nanjing, Jiangsu, China This project is aimed to design a house in an urban residential district, hoping to connect the architecture with city environment and define suitable users and interior function. In this old residential region, there are many children in the site, whose parents need to work in daytime leaving them alone. How to accomodate them and arrange their day-life will become a issue here.

Thus, I want to provide a house accompanied with the function relevant with kindergatern. Children prefer interesting environment, running, jumping and playing. Hence, I design different height corresponding to different activities, providing running and playing space for kids when they go to every room.

CONTINUOUS FOLDING Studio:Kinetic Art----Art Device Individual Project Tutor: Beisi Jia 11/2015- 01/2016, Location: Nanjing, Jiangsu, China This project is aimed to discuss architectural potential and kinematic nodes. It is the first step to know about the motion of material bodies and relevant forces and energy. The aim of most kinetic sculptors is to make movement itself an integral part of the design of the sculpture and not merely to impart movement to an already complete static object. They are constantly change patterns of relationship taking place through space and time. The sculpture may undergo continual transformations.

Taking triangle as prototype, change its shape through folding. It can change continuously through turning triangles' tangent edges.

NORDIC PAVILLION Studies In Tectonic Culture Group Project Tutor: Kenneth Frampton 09/2017- 12/2017 The Nordic Pavillion lay all the structrue and force in the long-span concrete construction. The structural Gestalt of this work consists of a single mega-beam, spanning 25 meters, that splits into two as it cantilevers out over a V-shaped column in order to accommodate a large tree. This dynamic gesture is complemented by a double-layered concrete latticework roof, with a fiberglass ‘corrugated’ roof suspended within the concrete purlins.

HISTORICAL RESIDENCE Mapping-- Chinese Traditional Dwelling In 19th Century Individual Project Tutor: Kai Gong 07/2015- 08/2015, Location: Xichong, Jiangxi, China In villages of Jiangxi, many residence, which were built in Qing Dynasty in 18th-19th century, still left in use. During the long history of ancient China, wood structure is the base and fundamental in Chinese , even asian, architecture. We aimed to research on the construction of wood structure in South Chinese tradition dwelling and restore the original wood structure.
