Could Design Start From User Needs? Could design become everybody's business? When a space belongs to a group of people, how to choose to meet everyone's need? When a space gets a chance to be reformed, hundreds of solutions exist. Yet, the one which considers more users activities shall be the one gives more soul to this space.

A spacious space including a sink and easily deals with food waste; a space that serves as a waiting area for people making appointments; a space that conducts public affairs.

A space feels like internet cafĂŠ with many sockets and becomes soundproof when containing around 10 people; a space that could be used during the whole day and with a whiteboard that could be circled with at least 20 seats for temporary meeting.

What if 1 ping was reformed by an opening?

27

Site Observation We choose only 1 ping space on NTU campus to reform.

Surronding The Land Temple of NTU is located by the College of Management since 2000. Although the temple is small, it still provides incense burner and sink for its believers. We choose to reform the sitting area next to the temple.

Design Process Based on the script, we design the chair and the roof within 1 ping scale.

Chair

The space is wide enough to sit cross-legged and bend head back. People sit between armrest height tables. This sequence provides people a private sitting place as sitting on ivory keys and putting arms on ebony keys, which forms like a piano key chair.

Roof

The view toward the land temple will pass through a palm tree.

30

The design tries to make the roof guide user’s sight.

Make the light enter from top and sides, such as how light goes through trees.

Combine with chairs and make users feel like sitting in a capsule covered with leaves.

Favorite Space on NTU Campus Practice to let the sketch resonate among people having similar space experience.

Building No.1, College of Management, NTU The building provides a place to rest, to enjoy coffee break, to celebrate event and to escape from the classroom.

34

Family or Friends’ Space Experience Figure out the feelings from others with sketch.

Supplementary elementary school Grandma used to take a walk before entering the classroom. She gave up her studies as the eldest of 8 siblings.

35

One Summer Day Before Becoming a Freshman Express an ages ago personal memory with sketch.

Xiaoyoukeng, Yangmingshan National Park Store operated by aunt gives me a chance to be a seller. I enjoy standing behind counter and flying a kite when there are fewer guests. The wind is so strong that I only need to hold the kite string and can watch it for hours.

36

The Space of Flows; The Flow of Spaces Sociologist Manuel Castells says that space is "the material support of time-sharing social practices."

Xinyi Commercial Center Feel the flow of crowd; the flow of traffic; the flow of show; the flow of path; the flow of sound and the flow of imagineering in the movie theater. (script design with Ko-Yang, Chang)

37

Space of One Ping Use dimensions of human figure to express the space.

Honor guard staff lounge in high school As a standard bearer, we perform together as a unit. We change clothes, make up, discuss and encourage each other in one ping. Our flags, boots and chairs also belong here.

38

Accessible Space Use wheelchair to simulate the space experience of people who have disabilities.

Accessible restroom of ShuiYuan Market We videotaped the process to feel and find out what kind of difficulties may people who have disabilities encounter. (video record with Shao-Wen, Liang and Wei-Hsun, Wang)
