Project 03 Modular housing for artists Ancoats, Manchester Brief: At a triangular site, the arounding conflic ting contex t of high-r ising skyscrapers and historical spirits influence my scheme of a complex of food school, restaurant and market.

The atmospher of European cafe is what my restaurant design will represent, also combining it with growing traditional plants used by Chinese who make dumplings.

Leeds market, the largest market in UK and Europe, representing some basic and long lasting feeling of a vibrant market.

People who are living under domestic architecture express their life patterns via shopping.

Concept

To produce fresh herbs on site, herb walls not o n l y s ave s a re a , b u t also acts as decorated partition walls.

The aim of activity is recalling back residents' memory about the area and recongnize the historical spirits in Catlefield.

The same situation is not only exist in Deansgate, castlefield. It also could be found from our most familiar road, Oxford Road. I studied the historical maps along with Oxford Road because architecture and roads there is typical to be compared each other. The key words are permeability and recongnizability.

The interior lit by a skylight and courtyard.

Daylight shines over a space and then the space becomes vivid. Sunlight permeates layers of rooms, paths,and navigates visitors.

Horizontally standing translucent facades of plant growing building face the inner pathsin our scheme.

During the evening, the facades are illuminated form inside.

The grid separates flows of users

By adding or abstraction form the colume of the building via changing staircases, a path of continuous experience created.

The area is a combination of housing,commercial and natural topography. there is a lot of potential of the neighborhood, as it is a residential oriented neibourhood .

time active Accommodating our manifesto, the one big common room meet the dynamic balance of the number of people within this small site. It is a new way of eating or taking lunch bakc to work or home.

The site is easily accessed by pedestrains with a high density of permeability, as it is close to two transportation points.

An experience based staircase sorrounds above plants and trees. It might object as a bay to overlook River Medlock if the hight of that is higher than the front building.

A multi-purpose sapce to pick up herbs, wander around green space and learn about herbs, going to other storeies at the same time.

SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE

Environment Strategy: To d e c r e a s e t h e carbon print caused by transportation of food to regions where it can't be gor wn locally, we deciced to grow crops indoors.

1. The skeleton steel frame and steel trusses 2. The clear glass panel roof and polycarbonate panel walls 3. The roof gutter (partially recycled content) 4 . Tr a n s l u c e n t w a l l consists of polycarbonate panels and main steel structure.

Condiering the huge a m o u t o f f re s hw a t e r consumed by crop production, ver tical farming can recycle water thorugh the system over and over rat h e r t h a n a l l ow i n g them to go to waste.

The luminous walls created by a slender steel frame and multiwall polycarbonate panels.

The primary structural steel frame has steel trusses (spans 5m) bracing the roof. The panels are braced at intervals of 2m, using horizontal steel tube sections.

The cladding material: Multiwall polycarbonate panels are the only moisture barrier or thermal barrier in the facade of this building for growing herbs.

Sequences of experience Experience is important when using architecture. When people approach the building and walk i n t h e b u i l d i n g, t h e y m i g ht b e guided by paths and enjoy their own experience in different paths.

Sequences of experience is not only a journey within the building, but also exploration of new materials, the indoor & outdoor circulation routes.

Project 03 Modular housing for artists Ancoats, Manchester Brief: Ancoats is a typical industrial suburb with rich history. There is now a need to regenarate housing and urban in the area, together with an emphasis on the quality of environment and living conditon.

Our site is next to the Hope Mill, a base place of creative industry. Our housing of artists will Supporting structure creates voids be affordable, especially for touring actors and between boxes. actresses.

Within the neighbourhood of Ancoats, residential blocks which embrace the water front.

The water front of a canal is public accessble. In the second photo there are privately owned waterfront gardens.

Framed facade represents each Green area is created by rotating units. Three small units can be fit in each units randomly and then the width of the site. vision and privacy are taken into account.

The site analysis shows approaches to the site and incluence on surrounding area.

The pattern per formes better when the number of floors is even.

The pattern creates more shadow for an individual floor and the floor below.

North elevation_Five floors The top fifth floor creates natural shadings for belowing floors so that sun blazing on summer afternoon is avoided.

Climate strategy Using light weight steel structure to decrease embodied carbon, which is cost effective as well. The application is cold rolled I-beam.

Secondly, clay brick is stengther and low embodied carbon produced than normal brick. There are two application in my scheme, brick slip cladding and the brick net wall.

The brick net wall on the south is also a way of reducing carbon energy in use, as passive dolar designe dshadings.

1. Cold formed steel framed on a 5.3m x 5.3m grid, where depth of section of beam is 250mm and width of flange or width of beam is 125mm for a standard I-beam.

Section in context

The elevation on the south shows layers of the building and different materiality.

Black steel structure and brick-red claddings show the coherence with the context.

The site section shows the relationship between the building and surrounding environment, sun and shadow strategy in our site.

Exhibition vision

I have a strong believe that people can live in houses build up in a reasonable number of money and nearby where they used to live rather than a heavy transportaiton to arrive home.

Build now as what kind of layout you want, as whereever you want on earth or on Mars.

A simple scan via smartphone let you design your housing unit based on our two typical varieties.

Then your units will be made in a factory with safe care and strick construction processes. transport to the site and a crane lift them up to the position in the steel frame structure. all the construction take within several months. your home is built and ready for you to live in!
