Project statement

This new Community Center is a self-contained future island featuring hi-tech interior elements, and bringing the three integrated functions of the center (residential, business, assembly) to the refugees, center staff, and local volunteers. By living, studying, and working together in this center, the refugees engage with one another through educational programs, community events, and co-living experiences. They will come to believe in their future and eventually find their way in the new society.

a / The conflict began on 15 March 2011, with demonstrations. These demonstrations were like demonstrations held in other Arab countries, which has been called the Arab Spring. Protesters in Syria demanded the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad. His family has held the presidency in Syria since 1971. More than 350000 people already died in the civil war in Syria which is ongoing for almost five years. More than 12 million people were expelled from their homes because of the battles between various factions. How did the “peaceful protests turn into a big war? This is the summarized background.

Project statement

The high-quality housing is designed and built for professionals and families from the neighborhood. The 50 units form a big community courtyard, leading residents towards a pleasing public garden. Each dwelling is integrated into the landscape to ensure optimum lighting conditions both inside and out. At the same time, the dramatic green surroundings provide a natural, undisturbed feature that contrasts with the contemporary dwellings.

Project statement

The inspiration for the youth housing project comes from the classic villas in the old Frederiksberg. Thirteen detached houses in two stories are placed on the site, leaving little gardens in the gaps between. The terrain rises towards the East, creating a space for public functions facing the street, such as a library, study room and a shared kitchen.

Project statement

The building forms pockets and creates tension for people to view the cityscape. On the ground floor, individual galleries are connected by yards. On the second floor, a walkable canopy brings visitors together from lower galleries to the upper galleries. In each gallery module, upper and lower galleries share a curved ceiling/wall assembly which brings in sky light through the openings.

Project statement

The concept seeks to develop Tujunga Wash inline by the year 2025, factoring in the natural erosion of the site, making the channel a more natural feature and one that will welcome and integrate the community with its local water source. The Tujunga Wash would be transformed from a straight line into a gentle S-curve, with the water bordering one side of the channel and then re-routing to the other side.

Project statement

The school is looped with an infinite circulation where students, teachers, parents and visitors have endless and refreshed experiences by entering different spaces. The infinite path composes the school by lifting, hiding, wrapping, interlocking and intercepting users. This path also extends people’s walking time from one space to another, which emphasizes its function as an endless educating path to different volumes, textures, heights, scales, and lightings.

Project statement

This group design project utilized repetitive modules interconnected with elastic webbing to create a complex arrangement of forest-like spaces, which allowed dynamic circulation flows in all directions. Students spent time prefabricating the pavilion, cutting pieces into correct dimensions, and assembling on site. Prefabrication was completed on time, one day before it was shipped to the site in Milan.

One module sample was made in order to exam where and how textile modules connect to the wooden frames in a certain way. During that time, engineers came to help in order to test out whether the string could be attached to the frame safely.

THANK YOU I want to thank my undergraduate and graduate schools in both San Francisco, California and Copenhagen, Denmark. Immigrating to California, I successfully blended my Chinese design philosophy with San Francisco’s local culture. The American education enlightened my designer dream and created a leap in my career in the Bay Area. I want to thank my professors, instructors, classmates, and friends for all your direct and indirect help on my projects. I approved of myself when I saw hope in your eyes. I want to thank my past and current employers and co-workers who taught me and shaped my working ethics. I stand up as a professional now. I want to thank my parents, who live in China. They love me. They always believe in me, my talents, and my future. They tried their best to support my living overseas. I feel so blessed to have you all present in my young life. I want to be the change and make the world a better place.
