Social equality is a rarity in this historic concession Han Kow, for the government and developers will demolish those disadvantaged local’s houses just for interest, which is pervasive in the nation. So what we designed is to avoid dispel this disadvantaged people. On the contrary, we need them stay to preserve the original Han Kow community tradition that can serve as the reminder of the intrinsic of the city. This project aims at three kinds of users: original local residents, tenants (most of which are young migrant workers) and small business shopkeepers. The Concession Utopia is inspired by the people’s commune in 1960s in China, we design a community with highly-sharing lifestyle to present local’s previous life with prefabricated units to lower the budget and give possibilities for the architecture to grow in the future.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
The project is designed to improve the locals ware-fare and to enhance old district competitiveness. I hope the project to bring benefit during the construction and usage period. Also, the mode can be a example for neighboring blocks for their renewal project.
During the construction period, because of the prefabricated material and easy standard building process, the previously-non-training locals can be involved in the business to increase the income
EXPANSION
GENERALIZATION
The modularized units offer the architecture the characteristic of expansion . Any new unit can be inserted for different use so the business is with high flexibility.
The project and its mode can be exemplar to other concession block renewal project for the rapid construction, low budget , better living environment and new commercial activities.

PART1: OPEN STREET MARKET Description
Strategy
This part is the first to be built and will serve as a reminder of original Han Kow street market. This part presents the four major business on basis of the previous research: restaurant, message room, MaJiang room and. This market zone is opening to the public and can attract surrounding residents and tourist, both inject energy to this old community and increase the income of the disadvantaged people.
Based on the original spatial form of street market and in-community market, the OPENING MARKET part presents series of shops of original business linked by a raised-up zigzag street to the 3rd floor, which help visitors have a longer time to experience the local’s life. And the modular composition provides shopkeepers opportunity to expand their business. Also the market is set to connect the surrounding community and become a center for people to communicate.

PART2: ORIGINAL RESIDENTS COLONY Description
Strategy
This part is a renewal collected dwelling colony of original local residents. Just like their previous living environment, the colony is divided into several group, inside which 3 or 4 families share space like living-room, kitchen, toilet and bathroom. Owning their private bedroom, with which the basic size is 4m*4m per unit, and the family could choose 2 or more units to be combined due to their larger population.
The colony is placed at the top part of architecture so the residents can enjoy the privacy from the OPENING MARKET. The project present the sharing lifestyle , and the new apartment provide these disadvantaged residents with a more comfortable interior environment with new facilities, decoration and convenient walking system. And the roof so each family can get easy access to the roof garden for their outdoor activities, which is a rarity in previous district.

PART3: HOME OF TENANTS Description
Strategy
This part aims at those younger and youth workers who work the whole day and only regard here as a sleeping capsule. With huge living pressure in this big city, they always get to work very early in the morning and back here tire. The TENANT HOME will help them to find a scene of home with individual apartment and plentiful communication space with their neighbors. The complex is connected to the market so they can have great night life there.
The project provides these young workers with individual apartment but also offers enough communication space to connect them with their neighbors, which help them to share the pressure in the work. Also, considering the situation that youngsters are tend to have opening social life, this part is connected with the MARKET street straightly so they can get easy access to it.

Nowadays, the city Wu Han urban modernization process hugely impacts citizens health for less exercise field is available for them to do so. Considering about this , we hope to provide the citizens with a ground to exercise with the limitation of boundary. The design site locate in the high-density residential zone between old industrial renewal zone and newly-development downtown where very little public space exist. The site is separated with 3 blocks, one is Han Kow prison which will be removed, one is migrant workers’ gathering zone which is planned to be set with CBD and the last one is an abandoned factory. Within the size of 390m*120m of middle block, we hope to expand the activity space to a bigger one . So we made the loop high line site to make the path longer. Also, to consider the safety of the exercisers, we make a vertical hierarchy of different speed movement to place their tracks on different level. Doing so, the different movement will not interfere each other to make sure the safety for people using this system.

RESEARCH ON URBAN TRANSPORTATION AND DISTRICT PEOPLE MOVEMENT MODE In order to find out the relationship between urban transportation system and people movement , I stimulate the 24-hour city-scale movement intensity model. In the series of public transport movement visualization chart, though is in the high-intensity zone, the site is still below the downtown intensity especially during night of a day. Also, in the second stage, I interview locals of their daily travel and movement mode. Comparing these two research, I find this link part of old industrial renewal zone and newly development zone is now basic the dormitory town with convenient municipal transportation system but poor area-based movement system

PEDESTRIAN STREET TYPOLOGY STUDY After the basic site mapping, we find that the lack of public space is the most urgent problem to be solved for locals. With the street interview of 127 local residents, 89 of them hope to set a pedestrian commercial street here. Actually it is reasonable for this area to have a new pedestrian street to provide more public space for both residents and potential visitors. So a new commercial street will serve as the major part of the renewal project. In the first stage of design, we two start to do research of the pedestrian street typology. With the similar context, we compare 9 streets block design, 5 of which are also in Wu Han. We use the road system as the standard and the cases are classified with 4 main types: one-main-road mode, doublemain-road mode, cross-main-road mode and multiple-main-road opening mode. We stimulate the stay-point and trip path of each mode and find the double-main-road system will attract people to have long stay in the system.
After comparison among different pedestrian types, we highlight the following three cases and choose double-mainroad system MAP

SITE STRATEGY The site is located in the center of the connection zone of economic development zone and old industrial renewal zone . The site includes three blocks. The southern one is an migrant-worker-occupied zone which would be cleared for business center; the middle one used to be Han Kow prison which will be moved to other place; the northern part is now the Jiang Hu Soap factory which will also be set elsewhere. The current problem for the site is that the neighboring blocks are all high-density residential or office building with very shortage of public activity space for residents. Also, the site split the area with fragmented neighborhoods. So what I hope is to create a link part in this site to connect all the neighboring blocks and provide enough public space for residents. Considering the limitation of the boundary in the center of the city, I make a loop high line track, which is definitely longer than a linear street, for people to exercise and have other outdoor activities.

VERTICAL MOVEMENT SYSTEM WITH SPEED HIERARCHY Vertically, the walking-friendly pedestrian system is created with speed hierarchy, which will prevent each kind of movement to influence each other and ensure the safety of exercise. There are 5 levels: municipal transportation level, walking pedestrian commercial street level, cycling-speed movement level, jogging-speed movement level and highrise top part exercise level. I design this hierarchy to provide different users with their specialized activity space. The design also offer multiple choices for residents and visitors to make use of this energetic zone in the center part where outdoor public space is in shortage.

MAIN JOINT SPACE AND SECTION CONSTRUCTION PROCESS This is an urban design project so the project is to be designed with different construction stage. To optimize the construction and offer the maximum enhancement of this area, I start with the middle block of the Traffic HUB and its adjacent commercial pedestrian street to serve the residents with basic public space, then start to build those high-rise to attract young generation to house here, and then start cultural facilities.
Fully use the original prison zone at present to build a pedestrian block featured with boutique commercial and cultural facilities. This first stage is to define the position of the block and leave the public a distinct impression.
After the image of the block ha mercial high-rise and residen shopping mall, hotel, office bu built as high-intensity developm
as already setup, comntial housing including uilding and flats can be ment.
When the high-intensity middle part of development has finished, the block has basically taken shape. It is the proper time to construct the CBD district to enhance the district business competitiveness.
The last stage is to complete the hole area urban design. In the northern part, it is the final step to build the cultural center to serve for the whole area to increase the culture atmosphere of this area.
RESEIDENTIAL BUILDING DESIGN For the urban design, I choose the residential part as detailed design. For the residential part, I make a complex of residential houses, soho loft, office and commercial units. In the first several lower floors. I set several cubic with similar size to provide business space for investors with own needs. The higher part can be used as loft or residential housing to attract young generation to work and live here. Also I set the link bridge with gym in it for those who live in higher part.

PHLURK REBIRTH
PHLURK MINORITY CULTURAL CONSERVATION CENTER PROJECT
[LOCATION] PHNOM PENH CAMBODIA [DURATION] 8 WEEKS [ACADEMIC] YEAR 3 SEMESTER 2 [TUTOR] LEI PENG [ INDIVIDUAL] [SUBMISSION] ART-TECH 2017
Kompong Phluk is a small Cambodian southern village near Phnom Penh, which was once the biggest traditional bamboo weaving making village. But recent years of modernization impact the local handcraft business and attract most of the young generation to the big city, the area suffered a rapid decline. To preserve the tradition and Phluk Weaving craft, I design this village, the shape of which is inspired by local triangle weaving pattern. In the village, the weaving making workshops are placed along a street for visitors to experience the folk culture. In the end part of the village, there is a multi-function center containing cafe, theater, meeting-room and so on to meet the need of urban tourists. And the whole architecture is facing to the Phluk Lake so the visitors can get easy access to the nature. With respect to the construction, I still use the prefabricated construction method as the low-tech way is the most appropriate in this disadvantaged area. The folding door is applied to serve as sun-shade and rain cover due to the local climate.
VILLAGE DECLINE Cambodia is a traditional agriculture-dominance country. But recent year ‘s reform and opening witnessed a relatively rapid development in and manufacturing industry. While per capita income remains low compared to most neighboring countries, Cambodia has one of the fastest growing economies in Asia with growth averaging 6 percent over the last decade. The urbanization bring better life to the migrant workers who used to survive through very low income of agriculture. So those villages that locate near big city decline in a rapid rate. Kompong Phluk is a small Cambodian southern village near Phnom Penh, which was once the biggest traditional bamboo weaving making village. But recent years of modernization impact the local handcraft business and attract most of the young generation to the big city, the area suffered a rapid decline. Nearly 75% of the young labor force moved to the capital radiant zone. So the weaving and textile tradition may fail to be handed down from past generations. The population loss is the biggest problem limiting the development of this area.

MASTER PLAN (The time is consumed by walking)
Considering the influence of local economical revival and tradition cultural inheritance, I hope the project can serve not only one village but more villages in this area as much as possible. In this way, people from different villages can come to this center to start their business. So The project locates in the old Kompong Phlurk village site, which is just on the shore of Phlurk lake. And the site has a circle with maximum radius of 1000m to cover neighboring 8 villages to allow those handcraft men and other villagers to walk here within 20min. For visitors , the Phlurk lake is another resource to provide them with good viewing. Because of the hot and humid climate in Cambodia, I also choose this site to allow ventilation from lake to the building to create a more comfortable environment
TOPOGRAPHY ADAPTATION & GENERATION PROCESS Phlurk Village locate in a mountainous site with a major lake there. With a gradient of 7° or so which is a good potential for people to walk , I try to separate the site into two part and reform the slope terrain: the first is several big steps for a an workshops street , the second is a big flat platform to place a big center containing different function rooms. So the building looks like a small hill to rise up following the terrain steps.

PROGRAM AND SPACE The minority cultural center rises following the terrain condition. The building is divided into two parts, one is the workshop street where visitors can experience local handcraft making through walking along the street and market, another is the main hall including theater, meeting room and other entertainment activity indoor space. I hope visitors can still enjoy comfortable environment and good service while they experience the traditional local culture, so I create a complex of traditional space environment and modern style space for visitors.

VENICE ARK
CAMPO ST MARGHERITA RENEWAL PROJECT
[LOCATION] VENICE, ITALY [DURATION] 7 WEEKS [ACADEMIC] YEAR 4 SEMESTER 1 [TUTOR] ALBERTUS S WANG KALLIOPE KONTOZOGLOU [GROUP & INDIVIDUAL] [COLLABORATE] SIYING XU [ROLE] GROUP FIELD RESEARCH 100% CONCEPTUAL DESIGN 100% DETAILED DESIGN 100% MODEL MAKING [HONOR] NATIONAL EXCELLENT WORK 2017
Venice is a city consisting of small islands that are separated by canals and linked by bridges, but it got flooded from time to time. Our site Campo Santa Margherita is a quite big campo in Venice, where a large quantity of activities take place every day. As is known , campo , a conventional type of outdoor void , serves as a very vital part of Venetians daily life, providing a space for various activities. However ,when it is flood at a annual frequency, the campo would always be drown under a-meter-high seawater, which brings a terrible problem that not a single activity would take place again. So what we do is to create a floating temporary area for a campo to still work when flooding, just like Noah’s Ark. Here comes the design “VENICE ARK”
FIELD RESEARCH MAPPING The VENICE ARK project is designed on basis of field research of 18 major campos in Venice, during which we learn the space relationship with people activities in Venice, textures applied with the city and come up with the floating campo idea. During the field research, we found that near all the campos in Venice will be drawn during flood period , so we came up with the idea to create a platform for use in the flood period for both tourist and locals.
CAMPO ACTIVITIES AND TIME LINE The campo can be occupied by tourists from residents. So we simple list some of the activities happened on the campo. And all this activities, according to its patternďźŒcan be classified into three forms: walking, stopping, and gathering. This diagram shows different activities on different position: Through surveys, we could see that people come into campo from main entrances, they usually walk on the side of the campo, or just across it. People would stop from time to time when they walk, but rarely stop at the entrance. Some of them would running in the morning. The shop would closed at 9 in the evening, when there were few people on the campo.
SITE ANALYSIS
FLOATING SYSTEM L
During the field research, Campo Santa Margherita is a very special one. With a very low altitude, this campo is prone to be submerged under water during flood period. Also, there are two well systems in the campo, which is quite different from other only-one-system campo.

DAILY TIDE SUNKEN GALLERY The Campo St Margherita is a void edged by the surrounding houses so visitors will find no clue of the canal which just besides them. In this part, in order to make a good relationship between campo space and the canal, I lift up the first two floor to make the connection of the campo and the canal. Inspired by Carlo Scarpa, I make several geometry steps lowing down to the canal, so when tide rises up and falls down during a day, visitors can experience the time changing.

VENICE ARK DURING NON-FLOOD DAYS [INDIVIDUAL] During most period of a year , the campo St Margherita will stay dry and be a very popular square for visitors to gather. In this campo, a very interesting thing is that it has two well systems, which once served as the basic living supply for locals. During the field research, I found that the reservoirs are two big underground space being able to containing tens of people. So I created a tunnel to connect them to make a underground museum for wells. Also, in the middle part of campo there is a house that belonged to an executioner. I made use of its wall as screen for movie for both locals and visitors.

ANNUAL FLOOD FLOATING CAMPO The campo is above the official zero mark--but flood is high enough to inundate site Campo Santa Margherita, which is prone to tidal flooding. Every year during December to March, both visitors and the city tourism will suffer from the flood .So the design focuses on the campo itself, aiming to let people use the campo even when it is flood. The floating platform will rise with water so the surface will always be dry for people to occupy.

SEA LEVEL RISING ANALYSIS According to scientists from Italy and France, the Mediterranean will rise by up to five feet (140cm) before 2100. The Venice will just be under water in a century, and all the current tourism will disappear. I make a prediction of sea level in a century and propose the operation of this Venice Ark. And this mode can be generalized to any other campo of Venice to provide more public space during flood period`
Current Currently, the Venice Ark will provide people with platform during December to March
2025
Short Term: 15cm
In 2025, some part of suken gallery will be submerged with rising sea level
2060
Mid Term: 65cm
In 2060, the sunken gallery will disappear because of the sea level and some part of campo will be under water for whole year.
2090
Long Term: 120cm
In 2090, the whole campo will be under water and the ARK will be the only outdoor public space for people to use.

[LOCATION] SAN XIA, CHINA [DURATION] 5 WEEKS [ACADEMIC] YEAR 4 SEMESTER 2 [TUTOR] GUAN KAIXIONG [INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION WORK] [HONOR] SPECIAL AWARD OF CUBIC-ARCH 2017 The Three Gorges Project produced millions of immigrants, but it is a huge impact. In particular, nearly 200,000 immigrants, leaving the ancestral home of thousands of miles away from their ancestors, indeed, they are still living a traditional life of the farmers, is a huge sacrifice. Instead of moving them to other place, I design this project to resident these locals where they once lived. The locals are now leaving the hometown with their fervent love of this place. So it is a good idea to develop tourism with the beautiful landscape.
ANT-HOLE MORPHOLOGY STUDY AND CONCEPT DESIGN In order to solve the SAN XIA immigrant living problem, I hope cliff area can be made use of. So I study the colony model of ant, which is an vertical colony system with complex function. The design is inspired by the ant whole in three dimension: the first is its program, the second is its vertical communication system, the last is its efficient operation mode.

For the fist step, I gather all the villagers to the higher part zone for a short term rescue, and start create vertical foundation in the cliff. The next step is to stimulate the ant’s colony dwelling system to set several layers and vertical communication system to integrate the construction

STRUCTURE DESIGN
This group work is designed for earthquake refugees in SI CHUAN with temporary shelter after the catastrophe. We design a 8-men shelter with wood which is opulent in that area. We analyze the anti seismic construction structure and use small scale models to test anti-seismic performance, with simultaneous test on different required construction materials, then experienced a 2-week-last period of building.
