Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Gourd Pyrography Experience Hall

This project is a cultural experience hall that integrates education, experience, and promotion of the gourd pyrography, a Chinese intangible cultural heritage. It aims to allow more local people to experience the gourd pyrography and become its inheritors . Additonally, people anywhere else can visit the artworks and purchase them as NFTs. This is also an innovative way to ensure the inheritance of this intangible cultural heritage.

Background Research

China has 3610 categories of intangible cultural heritage

As a traditional crafts of Shanxi Province since Han dynasty (BC 202), Gourd Pyrography plays an important role in Chinese history. More importantly, the production process of gourd painting reflects the basic techniques of Chinese painting from line drawing, spot, outline and blend.

N

REVEALING is the concept of the project. Through the procedural settings of the three programs ( A. Exhibition&Education ; B. Experience&Production ; C. Propaganda&Inheritance), the space gradually reveals its experience to the visitors, from gaining acknowledgement of the gourd pyrography, producing a piece of gourd in person as the inheritors and helping propaganda by uploading the NFT gourd for the international market.

Visitors (now as inheritors) 3D scan their gourd pyrography and upload the digital files to the cloud. People all over the world can buy the gourds online NFT. Therefore, this Chinese intangible cultural inheritance can be better known and propagandized.

People on site visit the AR world for all gourds created by visitor-inheritors.

Empower

This is a spatial installation inspired by my perception of Guangzhou, the city where I live in. Guangzhou city is a complex society that is composed of the "front" modern, decent CBD area and the "back" old, disordered urban village. In this project, I depict the CBD area as the "Upper World" and the urban village as the "Lower World". The development of the "Upper World" would never leave the support of the "Lower World", which can also understand as the "Lower World" empowering the "Upper World". I applied my perception of both worlds through the 2D drawings and the 3D installation exploring the differences between the "Upper" and "Lower" world from their materialities, spatial configurations, color, light and so forth.

Fantasy Wonderland

In this project, I use 3D scanning technology to realize my childish imagination. In my childhood, my parents were always busy working, my toys were my playmates and they always brought me full security and they were my whole world. As I grow up, my toys remain the same. Inspired by Claes Oldenburg's giant installation, I introduce a new technology--3D scanning into my project to convert those physical toys into 3D data which I can easily re-scaling in the virtual modeling world. Finally, I create a Fantasy Wonderland which is composed by my childish "playmates", the wonderland which once was my world and my dream.

Here we go!My fantasy wonderland!

I remember a few years ago...

I traveled to Chengdu , Sichuan with my friend.

Hurry!Hurry! It's time to go to the airport

Ah~ We're off to Chengdu!

On the fly...

Yeah!We arrived in Chengdu!

What if I enlarge my little yellow duck? EH!

What's that huge thing? When I turn around ,I found a giant Panda saying "Hi" to me .

Come and fight me

Wait...What's that???

How about blowing up my other childhood toys Ideas pop out of my brain!

A giant drum is fighting with a bear.

OHHHH!!! A huge duck is looking at me !

Ah~
OMG! Hi~

Mood Collage

It is an interesting and exciting place. Here, an originally palm-size toy is projected onto the wall .Looking through the hole, you can find unknown fun.

It is thrilling here. The"crocodile mouth" can be seen everywhere, full of challenges and excitement.

Here will bring you great happiness while making you feelthat you are in danger. With winding roads, and bobo pools, it is very likely to be knocked down by barricades and fall into the pool.

Household items

Denburg moved to New York City, where he became fascinated with the elements of street life: store windows, graffiti, advertisements, and trash. Being aware that such things can be sculpted,he shifted his interest from painting to sculpture, choosing objects with close human associations, such as bathtubs, typewriters, light switches, and electric fans.

3D scanning technology

3D scanning is to collect multiple sets of information from different angles, and when working, a laser (point, line or array) will be projected on the surface of the object, and then the scanner can determine the position information of the object according to the reflected light of the object, and then synthesize this information.

Its significance lies in the ability to convert the threedimensional information of the physical object into a digital signal that can be directly processed by the computer.

Work flow

I used a 3D scanner and software to convert my childhood toys into three-dimensional data, then modified the details in Nomad, and finally did a spatial modeling in Rhino. This technology is very magical and convenient. It can even scan the human body, and software can record colors and materials.

INTERNSHIP PROJECT:Interior Design Of Hotel

2021-2022

This internship project is a lotus-themed five-star hotel design, and I am responsible for the floor plan of the restaurant, the rendering of the lobby and guest rooms. In the pre-floor plan production and renderings production, I learned the design principles and specifications of the hotel, and also experienced teamwork in a real working environment, team unity is very important, this experience increased my interest in interior design.
