Prospectus

Welcome Welcome to King Edward VI Sheldon Heath Academy where you’ll discover a great learning environment in which students aged from 11 to 18 are encouraged to reach their full potential.

It’s great being part of KESH. I’ve made lots of new friends, learnt loads of new things and visited lots of new places.

We invite you to be part of it. • We believe that all children can achieve • We provide a stimulating learning environment where we raise students’ aspirations • We ensure equality of opportunity for all • We pride ourselves on being approachable – working with parents, students, staff and the community in a spirit of cooperation and support • We belong to King Edward VI Foundation – which provides a proud history dating back to 1552 and a national reputation for academic excellence • We have high expectations of personal conduct and responsibility • We have an absolute commitment to high standards for all.

John. P. Allen Principal

Above all, we believe in the best – for our students, their families, our Academy and the wider community. Jessica, Year 7

Curriculum Our curriculum is designed to match students’ abilities with the best mix of courses - giving each individual a flexible route to success and ensure that they will be inspired.

Lessons are really exciting. You don’t just learn with the same group of people all the time and different teachers have different ways of showing you things. I think that makes you pay attention and want to learn.

Core subjects, such as English and maths, provide a foundation around which students may follow either a traditional academic route, applied learning, or a mix of the two – depending on their strengths and aspirations. The aim is to: • Encourage each individual to do their very best • Achieve academic success • Provide a broad and balanced curriculum • Provide a flexible curriculum that meets individual needs.

Andre, Year 10

Supporting students KESH Academy ensures that all of our students are safe, secure and happy. We do this in many ways but in particular:

There’s a good atmosphere at KESH. I think the teachers and staff really do care about us and support us to do our best.

• House system: Our houses create a ‘smaller school’ feel to the Academy, to encourage a sense of belonging for students, as well as to open up opportunities for intra-school, crossyear group competitions • Student support system from both staff and student mentors • Personal tutoring • Monitoring progress on a continuous basis • Individual support available to ensure that all students fulfil their potential.

Harmeet, Year 10

Individual enrichment We offer a wide range of extracurricular activities, including music performances and sporting events.

We all take part in different clubs and after school activities. The music lessons are definitely the best.

All KESH Academy students receive the opportunity to gain fresh experiences and develop as a whole person. Our outlook is ‘be yourself, be successful’. • Sporting • Music/drama • Clubs and societies • Residential trips and visits • Personal responsibility/leadership gained through the student mentoring programme as well as links to business • Social responsibility through community and charity work.

Aimee, Year 9

Sixth form The KESH Academy Sixth Form offers students the ideal environment in which to continue their vocational or academic learning and be challenged.

Going into Sixth Form, you want to be treated differently. I see it as the first step to going to university or getting into work.

The same great atmosphere and familiar surroundings but added responsibility, flexibility and experiences. • Full range of courses including: A level Applied learning • Personalised support and teaching • Strong links with higher education • Development of leadership and decision-making skills • Supporting students to aspire to attend university • Most importantly, it’s about the individual and enriching their life.
