Students aged 16 to 18

Students aged 19 or over

If you are aged between 16 and 18 at the start of your course, you will not have to pay tuition fees. Your parents/carers will be able to continue claiming any benefits they received while you were at school.

If you’re over 18, you may need to pay fees and other costs towards your education. The fees are set by the college at the start of each year, based on the level of funding provided by the government.

Educational maintenance allowances and the 16-18 bursary fund

However, many adult learners are entitled to financial support with their courses, including a complete waiver of fees in certain circumstances (for example, if you’re receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance). Because of the changing nature of government funding and the complex rules surrounding fees, it’s a good idea to phone us on 01909 504500 for the latest details.

Depending on when you start your studies, you may be eligible for government support. We also offer a bursary for students who are self-supporting, or whose families are on low incomes. The funding varies from year to year, so please contact Student Services on 01909 504500 for the latest information.

College transport fund If you live more than two miles away, you can apply for one third of the cost of your bus or train fares to and from college to be refunded. Free loans of bikes, secure lockers or padlocks and chains can be arranged through Student Services too.

Student support fund Students over 19 can apply to us for support with kit costs, essential equipment, trips or public transport fares, or when in financial crisis. Our funds are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Access to learning fund (ALF) We have a limited fund to help full or part-time students on higher education courses with everyday living costs, childcare costs or unexpected financial crises. If you need to apply, please contact Student Services for an ‘ALF’ form.

Other support available Army bursary scheme This scheme is open to anyone aged 16 to 32 who is undertaking full Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications in areas where the Army has specific skill needs, such as engineering, construction, business, administration, media and publishing, hospitality and catering and IT. If you sign up to the Army bursary scheme, you will get support from an Army contact throughout your course, work experience with an Army team, £1000 per year (for up to four years) during your studies, and a further £1000 on completion of Phase One Army Training. Support with childcare costs If you’re aged 19 or below, financial support towards childcare is available through Care to Learn. If you’re aged over 19 and in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance or Employment Support Allowance, or you have a household income below £20,817, you can apply for help through the college’s student support fund. Please note that free places for three and four-year-olds are available in our Early Learners’ Centre (see page 13).

Learning Resource Centre (LRC) The LRC contains a library, computing facilities and other resources including quiet study areas to help you get the most from your studies outside of class time. Early Learners’ Centre (ELC) The ELC is our purpose-built nursery on the Carlton Road site, with fully qualified staff to look after your children. Registered with Ofsted, it offers a spacious, safe and stimulating environment for learning and playing, plus an outdoor weatherproof play area. To make sure the nursery’s activities meet the needs and interests of each child, we work within the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Our team already includes an Early Years professional too, in advance of the government’s targets for 2015.

e Bistro In the heart of the college, The Bistro is a popular place for students to meet during breaks and at lunchtime. It’s a modern, attractive place to eat, with plenty of seating and tables to accommodate large and small groups. It also offers food to take away, as well as vending machines selling snacks and hot and cold drinks.

Fitness Suite Health and wellbeing are very important to our college ethos. Our fitness suite has all the latest equipment to help you keep in shape, as well as qualified staff to offer free diet and personal training plans.

Student Social Space: e Getaway The Getaway is where you can meet your friends and relax outside of formal tuition times. Near to the Bistro, it has a TV and DVD player, CD player, games and a Nintendo Wii for your enjoyment. Students are simply asked to observe a few rules concerning noise, behaviour and cleanliness so it remains a pleasant place for everyone. If ever you need to talk to someone, mentors and the chaplain are on hand in The Getaway during opening times.

The ELC is open to the general public as well as to students, and caters for little ones aged between two and eight. There are free places for three and four-year-olds.

INsync are the college’s professional beauty salons, based in Worksop and Retford.

There are short-term lockers around the college for you to store personal items. They’re coin-operated, but you get your coin back so they don’t cost anything to use. Please note that we can’t be held responsible for anything you leave in the lockers.

They’re open at various times throughout the week, including some evenings, when they offer hair and beauty treatments at great prices to students, their families and members of the public. They give our learners a chance to develop their skills in genuine working environments, while supervised by highly qualified staff. Cycle loan and bike lockers If you want to cycle to college, you can store your bike securely in one of our specially designed lockers. You can also borrow heavy duty locks and chains for free. Bikes are available for hire too, for travel to and from college or for enrichment activities. Please contact Student Services for more information.

Students union Once you’ve enrolled at college you will automatically become a member of the National Union of Students. You can purchase an NUS Extra card which gives you discounts when shopping, eating out, going to the cinema and more. Within the college, an elected student union committee will organise recreational, social and fundraising activities throughout the year. Enrichment and themed events Alongside your studies, North Notts College offers lots of activities and sporting events to enrich the time you spend with us. For example, we organise activities such as football, dance and photography. Themed events run throughout the year too, to help you stay healthy and safe, improve your career prospects, and to help you make a positive contribution to the college.

Play your part in college life

There are many ways you can contribute to life at college, over and above your studies and enrichment activities. Our active Students Union, which is affiliated to the National Union of Students, supports the social and wider political interests of our students, including recent campaigns about tuition fees and Educational Maintenance Allowances. Student representatives from each course help to provide feedback on how we can improve the structure and delivery of our teaching and learning. But students are also encouraged to take an active role in college governance by standing for election to our board of governors. Each year, two student governors are elected and play a full role in the strategic leadership of the college. This may sound daunting, but in practice it means that they take part in our monthly governors meetings helping to oversee the direction of the college, how well we are performing, and how effective we are in responding to the needs of our students and our community. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s student governors are Reece, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s studying Public Services, and Arnold who is studying Information Technology.

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are nationally recognised qualifications which allow you to ‘learn on the job’ while you earn money. For businesses, apprenticeship schemes help to build a skilled workforce. While you are on an apprenticeship, your employer will pay you a wage and support you through your training. You will work towards an NVQ type of qualification, assessed within your place of work. You will also have to take a technical certificate or other qualifications, which you can study at college on day release or block release.

Applying for an apprenticeship Most apprenticeships start in September, but some begin in January and some you can start at any time of the year. First you will need to apply to come to college; request an application form by contacting student services on 01909 504500. Once you have applied, we will invite you to an interview. There we will guide you on the most appropriate course for you, carry out an assessment to see which level you should start at, and, if required, give you support to find a job (because all apprentices need to be employed).

You will have a dedicated assessor to support you through your apprenticeship, which will last 12-36 months depending on the industry area, apprenticeship level and your own abilities. If needed, you can get additional learning support from the college, which may mean having a learning support assistant to help you with lessons, or making use of additional learning materials.

If you’ve already got a job offer, you should contact our Student Services team as soon as possible so one of our advisers can discuss your apprenticeship requirements with your employer.

If you are aged 16 to 18 there is no charge for doing an apprenticeship.

All apprenticeships are employer based, with 99% of apprentices being in full time employment and attending college on day release each week.

Foundation Learning Foundation Learning is a new way to provide personalised learning programmes for young people working at Entry Level and Level 1. It helps you maximise your potential and enables you to progress on to Level 2 courses and other routes. It's all about breaking down the barriers that sometimes prevent some people from continuing their learning journey. Foundation Learning is learner-focused and recognises that individuals are unique, learn at different paces and require different levels of support. It is flexible, allows people to start at different points and above all it offers lots of choice!

Work experience Some of the courses offer ‘real work’ experience for students such as construction and administration. This gives them the opportunity and experience to develop in a realistic working environment and have a greater understanding of working life.

English and Maths Having good English and Maths grades are important for entering the world of work or higher education, so we help all our full-time students to achieve them, either through GCSEs or Functional Skills qualifications. You can work at different levels:

Functional Skills (Entry Level, Levels 1 and 2) in English, Maths and ICT Functional Skills courses give you practical skills which allow you to work confidently, effectively and independently. We try to ensure that as many students as possible undertake at least one Functional Skills class each week.

AS/A-level Maths and English Maths and English play an essential role in the engineering, economics, health and social care and public service sectors. In fact, whatever career you end up pursuing, the chances are youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to deal with mathematical problems and demonstrate a high standard of English. We offer AS and A2 (full A-level) courses, which take one year each. To do an AS or A-level at Norths Notts College, you need to have five GCSEs at grade C or above (with grade B or better in the subject you want to study).

GCSEs in English and Maths If you missed out on getting grade C or above in your English or Maths GCSE at school, we will support you in trying again, either at Foundation or Higher level. You can have lots of tuition and help during your weekly lessons. GCSEs are truly valued by employers. They are also important to higher education institutions and UCAS when assessing your applications, so you need them if you plan to apply for a degree or want to get on in your career.

î&#x20AC;&#x201A;inking about university? Many school leavers will be thinking about the option of going on to study at university. For some, this will mean choosing to stay on at school for A-levels, but for many others North Notts College provides the option of a vocational route to university. If you do want to study full-time at university, we provide lots of help, including personal support from your tutor and our specialist staff within the Student Services team. They will help you with a wide range of advice and guidance, from deciding which university is right for you, to understanding about tuition fees and student loans, and even help completing your UCAS application form. Each year nearly 250 of our students leave college and go to higher education. On some of our courses 100% of students have secured places at university.

Whilst many of our students do go on to degree courses at university, many others take advantage of the fact that their vocational qualification opens up other routes through the world of work. Getting on the career ladder at this stage means you can learn while gaining valuable experience on the job, and get the support of your employer for the costs of studying while you earn. This might be through a part-time HNC or HND with us or elsewhere, before topping-up to a degree at university, or perhaps an apprenticeship leading to a Foundation Degree â&#x20AC;&#x201C; there are many different options to consider. Building services Our building services department offers electrical, plumbing and gas training and assessment courses, giving you EAL, City & Guilds and BPEC qualifications that are essential if you want to work in the building industry. Throughout your course, you will be under the expert guidance of our qualified lecturers who have many years’ experience of working in these trades. Most courses are based at our Shireoaks Skills Centre in Worksop, including some taught at our high-tech AM2 Centre, one of only 40 in the country. Both sites are very well-equipped, and we’re expanding our plumbing provision to include an ACS Gas BPEC-accredited assessment centre. To keep our students ahead of environmental changes, we are also planning courses in renewable energy, energy efficiency and water regulations. Technologies in the building services trades are consistently improving and you will need to be able to interpret and install equipment from plans. A further six units could be studied on the Diploma including sports coaching and outdoor adventure. This course is equivalent to 1 A-level and the Diploma is equivalent to 2 A-levels.

The course is scientifically orientated and geared towards developing a specialist focus within the field of sports, with core elements of anatomy, physiology, psychology and biomechanics providing the foundations of the course. The course is equivalent to 3 A-levels or 360 UCAS points.

Higher Education If you are looking for a new direction, a career change or the chance to go onto higher education then one of our Access to HE Diplomas could be the course for you. As well as refreshing and updating your skills and knowledge they also give you the confidence and ability to succeed at the next level up and are accepted by universities as equivalent to A-levels and seen as a passport to higher education and a new career. If you already have A-levels, or a Level 3 qualification we currently offer part-time, flexible higher education study in two subject areas Business and Child Care. The flexibility of these courses will allow you to develop new skills, improve your current career path, and study for a different career without the need to give up work. Courses are designed to develop up-to-date subject knowledge and improve employability skills. Higher National Diploma (HND) and Higher National Certificate (HNC) are qualifications in their own right. They can also be converted into a degree by taking one or two years extra study at University.

During the review, the team identified the following as one of many areas of good practice: “The extensive nature of support for students, which the students greatly appreciate and enables them to succeed.”

Course outline

You may be interested in this course if you are looking for a change of direction or wish to return to study. It is designed to help you develop the skills needed to undertake university study. Many of our students go on to teaching, social work or social science and humanities courses. You will study a range of topics to help you to get ready to apply for university. Subjects include history, ITC, English language, and social sciences.

If you want to develop a career as a nurse, paramedic, social worker or other health professional this course could be for you. You will develop the academic skills and study skills needed for university and to train for your chosen profession. You will study a range of subjects including biology, social science, and principles of care.
