Historic buildings have been, unfortunately and unexpectedly, demolished from time to time in the fast Chinese developing era. Nationwide, there has always been a backlash against such demolition and the subsequent eradication of the way of life that is often cherished. One of the most widely recognized and discussed case is about the courtyard house located on No.24 Beizongbu Hutong, Bejing, P.R.China.

Story of No.24, Beizongbu Hutong
Considered as "Father of modern Chinese architecture" for his indepth researches on ancient Chinese architectural preservations, architect Liang Sicheng had lived in the house for 7 years. During the period, Liang Sicheng proposed to preserve Beijing’s Yuan dynasty grids and its hulking city walls, while building up a completely new city to the west after Beijing was made into the capitol of the new republic. Classic as the house is, it turned out to be a cultural salon for the city’s pioneering philosophers, poets and artists in the 1980s. Unfortunately, the house was demolished unexpectedly in the year 2012
Park of Memory Box
Starting from the left over ruins of the courtyard house, the thesis proposes a landscape park, entitled Memory Box, throughout the whole residential block, so as to recall the past memories extruded from Hutong life. The creation of a common locus around which the sense of shared values, traditions and interests is forged, through the recovery of the vicarious memory of their forbears’ experiences. As the proposal reflects both the past experiences and current lives of the community, it will also be a life-enriching cultivations of generations. Eventually, the project will serve as an evolution of past memories, aimed at engaging thoughts and discourses about the vanishing culture and identities, the past and precedent, the everyday life and the future visions. Here, “we honor ourselves.
Methodology
Methodology as “mapping would be applied at three urban scale levels in the explorations of this landscape park, which are: the city level, the neighborhood level and the courtyard house level By overlapping old maps of six most identified periods, the design generates a collage of the past urban fabrics of this specific neighborhood area, which is further interpreted as the earthworks project.

Design Development
_The neighborhood (Hutong) Memory is never shaped in a vacuum. In order to represent the past, another two types of memory traces would be re-presented in physical forms: At the scale of the neiborhood, a fish-bone-like structure is mapped. Lanes and alleyways are applied to connect the neighborhoods' blocks. The fish-bone structure intersects with larger gird system at each end, as well as circulating in between the hierarchical navigation system and the hierarchical courtyard system within the neiborhoods.

By themselves, the ruins are mere broken bricks of little value; however, they are the land-anchored presence that could convincingly reinforce the memories attached to the site. As for the demolished residential buildings nearby, the construction of these marks the starting point of the demolishing era for the Hutong culture. Thus these residential buildings are witnesses of the loss of neighborhood culture, which make them everlasting remnants that are worthy of recording as well. Throughout the design development, the footprints of the columns of the demolished nearby residential buildings have been translated into another layer of “memory box in the design of the park. To be specific, in order to keep away from rigid monumental forms in terms of either architecture or landscape architecture, the thesis aims to enliven this process of constructing collective memories. Public are involved in constructing the park. Parts of the park would be exhibitions of private collections stored in small boxes of different materials. The collections that are put into the boxes, the way these boxes would be arranged in the park, the period of time for exhibiting, all of these are left to the public. In all, the process of retrieving memories in groups would become a shared collective memory itself.

The Taylor Plaza is positioned strategically adjacent to the McLean Metro Station in Tysons Corner, Virginia. WDG provided the planning and design to create a premier site to a high-density, transit-oriented mixed-use development. The project includes the enhancement of Scotts Run Park and street realignments. The development offers both commanding views and high visibility. Three buildings totaling 1,078,872-sf, 632 residential units, a 102,891-sf, 128-suite, extended stay hotel, 185,000-sf office, and 25,000-sf spa. Site includes 10,000-sf retail and parking for 1,367 cars.
