Untappd Helps You Find Your Next Favorite Brew at Legends Pub By Cara Aungst
With 11 taps rotating the best in local PA breweries — including their own signature IPA — and more than 40 bottled craft and domestic beers, Legends Pub at The Penn Stater is making a name for itself in the central PA beer scene. And now, it’s easier than ever to share the joy with Untappd, the social media platform for beer drinkers. This mobile app makes it easy to find your next favorite IPA and share brew locations, ratings and opinions with friends and other Untappd members.
2
“Craft beers have become so vast and popular with so many different styles now,” Legend’s Assistant Manager Adam Eckley says. “Untappd has great knowledge on every beer there is, along with where it is available near you. Subscribing to a venue or particular beer will allow you to receive notifications on your phone when a new beer or promotion has been added to your area.” One of the finds you can rate on Untappd is Legend’s custom brew, Legendary IPA, brewed specifically for them by Mad-K Brewery from Howard, PA. It’s just one of their 11 brews on tap from local breweries with picks like Evil Genius, Troegs, Victory, North Country and Voodoo. There are also more than forty craft, domestic and imported brews from which to choose. Eckley’s current favorite is a stout like Rusty Rail Wolfking Coffee Stout or Legend’s Legendary IPA. “It’s well balanced and unfiltered without being overly hoppy,” he says. “I also enjoy trying new brews. It is fun to get a new beer, try it and check out all its statistics on Untappd, reading tasting notes, style, ratings and seeing user uploaded photos.” It’s easy to check out the current and upcoming beer selections for Legends Pub on Untappd. You can subscribe to receive notifications on added beers and upcoming special events. Legends Pub offers a full bar, food menu, wine and beer selection, so you can pair that brew with one of their show-stopping burgers. With their free Brews & Burgers Club, you get a complimentary burger after ordering 12 craft brews. Next up, the pub will be offering a Tap Takeover featuring New Trail Brewery from Williamsport, PA. There will be on-site tastings with brewery representatives, an appetizer buffet and giveaways. Check in with them on Untappd, and subscribe for updates to get the latest news about the takeover.

Spring 2019 Fun Guide
From the Editor In retrospect, it wasn't a very good idea to read Laura Ingall's “The Long Winter” out loud to my kids in the middle of our own never-ending cold snap. Granted, I felt pretty grateful that I wasn't grinding my own wheat and bartering over the last candle in town, but reading it made me all the more ready for a Happy Valley spring. Because as good as we are at winter time (wrestlers, THON and Bellefonte Victorian Christmas, I'm looking at you), spring here in central PA is simply amazing. We put together this guide to help you forget being stuck inside this winter. It's got the perfect mix of big city fun like festivals, gourmet goodness and world class entertainment along with the best ways to play hard outdoors — like brew tours, hiking, kayaking and biking the Allegrippis trail! It's all happening this spring and summer, and we can't wait to share it with you! Enjoy!

The three-day celebration includes behindthe-scenes facility tours of Beaver Stadium and the new recital hall at the School of Music. There will also be a Dueling Lions Piano Bar featuring Howl at the Moon musicians and many other opportunities to network and have fun with fellow alums and their families. Graduation
From May 3 to May 5, Penn State will be waving goodbye to its newest graduating class. The spring commencement schedule begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center, with the Schreyer Honors College Medals Ceremony. Different colleges have different locations whether it be the Pegula Ice Arena for the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences or the Eisenhower Auditorium for the College of Arts and Architecture. Let’s all toast to the senior class of Penn State, may their futures be as bright as Old Main shining its bell tower at night!

BLUE‑WHITE PREVIEW

Blue White Weekend Lineup By Laura Zaks There’s no need for introduction. The Blue White Weekend is and always has been one of the biggest, most anticipated events of Happy Valley’s spring and for good reason. Penn Staters bleed blue and white — the fever and the pride we have as Nittany Lions can never be shaken, and on days like the Blue White game, we truly do have something to roar about: a celebration for a new and upcoming season! The weekend is rife with events, activities, foods and wonders galore, so why not dig in and find out what’s in store?
Tailgating and Parking
Football just can’t be done right without the tailgates, so whip out those coolers and grills, get in your Doan’s Bones BBQ order, and set up your cornhole and KanJam. Better yet, have it all done for you by calling the Tailgate Guys, for a turnkey tailgate experience!” Here’s the 411 on parking: previous season ticket holders are guaranteed free parking with the use of their pass. Anyone without this pass will be charged $20 per car for parking. If you’re a fan that’s planning to arrive with overnight recreational vehicles, you will be charged $60 with the pass and $100 without. Overnight RV parking will open at 8 a.m. the day before the game. All charges are cash only!
Fan Festival
Along Curtin Road, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on April 13, the Fan Festival will be awaiting any fans ready for live entertainment, music, games, giveaways and more. Food vendors will be spread out among sponsor booths and activities to add to the day’s hype. Continued on page 12

Autograph Session
Who can pass up an opportunity to meet the faces of the new football season? Bring your favorite piece of Penn State memorabilia with you on game day and watch them gain new life as signed tokens of the Nittany Lions. From 12:15 p.m. to 1:05 p.m., members of Happy Valley’s best football team will be ready to sign their autographs. Remember, one item per person.
The Blue White Game
The Blue White football game falls on April 13, this year, with a kick-off set for 3 p.m. Local craft and food vendors will be working around the stadium, with attendance of the game itself often ranging between 60,000 to 80,000 fans. For those who
aren’t aware of the history behind the game, it is the last spring practice and is known for hyping up the fall season to come. Fans will get to see the lineup and the talents of the players — a glimpse into the future. Before you kick off your festivities, don’t forget to swing by Old State Clothing Co. so you can sport your blue and white spirit!”
The All-Sports Museum
Fans pass the museum every football game and tell themselves, “One day, I’ll go in.” Have the “one day” be April 13 or 14, when the museum is right there, waiting, with all of its interactive exhibits, sports memorabilia and sports knowledge that would leave even the biggest Penn State fan scratching their head, wondering how they didn’t know. The museum is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

the latter for a special performance from Shades of Blue. Hosted from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on April 13, in the Schwab Auditorium, this renowned arts group on campus is ready to make you fall in love with the core of what music is truly all about: voice. Shades of Blue will serenade the crowd with Beyoncè, Boyz II Men and songs from a variety of boy bands. Free admission and songs to celebrate the win of Penn State against Penn State — be ready to sing the night away.
Paterno Family Beaver Stadium Run
It’s not just about supporting Penn State Football — the Blue White Weekend is here to also make a difference. Every year, the Paterno Family Beaver Stadium 5k and 2 Mile Family Fun Walk brings joy and hope to those involved as well as those meant to be supported by the event — the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Chapter. Join Happy Valley on April 14 to make that mark in the community. The 5k begins at 11 a.m. and at 11:10 a.m., the 2 Mile Walk. Come out and support a good cause for those lions that need your help! Film Festival
While you’re in town, don’t forget to stop by the State Theatre for some exciting events like The Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour. Sponsored by the Sierra Club Moshannon Group, the film festival will take place both April 12 and April 13, with the event starting at 6 p.m. and films rolling at 7 p.m. The films presented consist of adrenaline-packed action sports to discovery of wild landscapes and remote mountain cultures. The spirit of seeing nature through new eyes will awaken the explorer inside every Nittany Lion.
The Creamery
You can’t come to Happy Valley, tailgate outside the Beaver Stadium, root for the Nittany Lions as they show us what
14
they’re made of and then not go to the Creamery. It’s one of the university’s greatest staples — and the country’s too! Doling out around 750,000 scoops a year, Penn State’s Creamery is the largest university creamery in the nation. Whether you’re ordering a milkshake or a cup of ice cream, the flavors range from Grilled Stickies to Death By Chocolate to Alumni Swirl. Mouth-watering and perfect for a warm April Day, the Creamery’s ice cream is unlike any other. Don’t forget the ice cream rules: only blue and white sprinkles and only one flavor allowed!
Alumni Gardens
Your final stop for the weekend might not be an easy one to choose, but you could never go wrong with the alumni gardens at the Hintz Family Alumni Center. Built to be a “home away from home,” the pristinely white columns, gorgeous pond, quaint gazebo, and statues of children playing all come together for a beautiful aesthetic. Inside the center, there lie the La Vie yearbooks for alumni to flip through. The gardens are exactly one acre and are perfect for any students, couples, families and friends to stop by and relax among the peace and quiet of pebble paths and looming archways.

From Rails to Trails to Hiking and Biking This summer, venture outside to some of the best hiking, biking, and paddling destinations Happy Valley has in store! Beginner or expert, here are some destinations to check out for local outdoor fun.
Purple Lizard Destinations
If you’ve never used a Purple Lizard map, make this summer the one you try it. Based in Central PA, the Purple Lizard Maps company produces durable, up-to-date maps of the public lands around Central PA and other select regions — places the cartographers themselves regularly visit! The maps are intuitive and attractive, and depict biking and hiking trails, dirt and gravel roads, topographical contours, and points of interest — all the information you need to plan a destination and navigate to it! Note the little purple lizards that dot the maps, they indicate
special surprises on the trail. Maps are available at local bookstores and outfitters. You can also borrow maps from the Schlow Library in State College. More information at purplelizard.com.
Standing Stone Trail Sweet 16 Challenge
The Standing Stone Trail was named the Pennsylvania Trail of the Year in 2016. In the north, it connects to the Mid State Trail in Detwiler Run Natural Area. Its southern terminus is the Tuscarora Trail in Cowans Gap State Park. The 84 miles of ridgeline in between are full of fascinating geologic formations (including iconic Monument Rock), the Thousand Steps, a fire tower, two trail towns and vista after fantastic vista. The Sweet 16 Challenge highlights sixteen of the trail’s most iconic attractions. Go to standingstonetrail.org/charters to download your Sweet 16 challenge brochure. whether you’re a novice or a pro, there is a weekly evening ride where you can get out on a bike, meet new friends and hone skills this summer. Local bike shops and clubs host rides on gravel roads, single track mountain bike trails and paved roads. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back evening cruise around town, or a strenuous and technical trail ride in Rothrock, State College riders have you covered. The Bicycle Shop hosts two weekly rides. Monday at 5:30 p.m. is the ladies beginner mountain bike ride. They host mountain bike rides Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. The Happy Valley Women’s Cycling team hosts a Friday night pizza ride, which is a marked-course social ride starting and ending at a local pizza place. See thebicycleshopinc.com/rides for ride details and schedules. Freeze Thaw Cycles sponsors gravel road rides every Wednesday night from April to October. The ride is open to all

adults and lasts approximately two hours, departing from the Galbraith lot in Rothrock State Forest at 7 p.m. Freeze Thaw Cycles also offers a Monday night one hour, easier-paced ride. Details TBA, see their website at freezethaw.com/visit_us and follow their Instagram and Facebook for weekly details. State College Cycling Club hosts Tuesday evening road rides suitable for riders capable of maintaining a 12 mph pace and up (separate groups based on ability level). They post routes beforehand online. Rides start up in April. See statecollegecycling. com for details. Penns Valley Pedals and Pints is a group that rides the paved and gravel roads around Millheim on Wednesday nights. Volunteers mark the course before each ride, and a $3 entry fee gets you a free beer after the ride. At the end of the year, all proceeds from the rides are donated to a local charity. The lowspeed (typically horse-and-buggy) traffic and beautiful scenery of the Millheim area make this an excellent option for folks turned off by road riding in high traffic areas. They meet behind Elk Creek Café at the Millheim Fire Company. Visit pedalsandpints. weebly.com/about.html for more information. The Nittany Mountain Bike Association (NMBA) holds single track mountain bike rides on Thursdays at 6 p.m. from the Galbraith Gap lot in Rothrock from mid-May through September. All levels are welcome, but newcomers should be prepared for technical terrain. See nittanymba.org/local-rides/ for more information.

Juniata River Tributaries
The branches of the Juniata River have something to offer for every paddler. Fish for trout by boat in the dark, wild narrows of the Little Juniata. Ride the peaceful meanders of the Raystown Branch and spot the turtles, or follow the historic route of the Main Line Canal from Petersburg down through Mill Creek and beyond, navigating around bridges and islands. Pick up the Juniata River Water Trail Upper Section map guide pfbc.pa.gov/ WaterTrail.htm and plan your route. Rothrock Outfitters of Huntingdon can provide recommendations and gear for an outing, plus a shuttle or shuttle assistance. Make advance reservations for weekend gear rentals or shuttles. Visit their website at rothrockoutfitters.com for rates and information.
Penn’s Cave & Wildlife Park
See it by boat! Visit this all-water cave listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks near Centre Hall, PA, where the tour is given entirely by boat. You’ll experience breath-taking natural limestone formations during the underground 45-minute tour. Also available above ground are tours of the farm-nature-
wildlife park where North American animals are featured (including mountain lions!) on some of the Penn’s Cave mountain and pasture acreage. Visit pennscave.com for tour details and pricing.
Lower Trail
It rhymes with “flower.” Take your bike (or horse) along a section of this seventeen-mile-and-growing cinder and paved rail trail. It follows the path of the historic Main Line Canal along the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata from Canoe Creek State Park to Alfarata. Most of the path is set far back from active road and rail lines, and the solitude compliments the scenery as you ride by some of the oldest and grandest buildings in the area, which face the river rather than the road. Visit rttcpa.org/lower.shtml for more information.

offer something for downriver paddlers of any ability. Paddle beginner-friendly Bald Eagle creek to see a diversity of hawks and waterfowl, and bring a picnic lunch to Curtin Village Ironworks along the way. For visitors confident in negotiating some swift sections and obstacles, Spring Creek from Bellefonte to Milesburg offers fun riffles and excellent stops for trout fishing. Tussey Mountain Outfitters, located along Spring Creek in Bellefonte, can provide you with boats and other equipment, as well as assistance with shuttles. Details about different sections of streams can be found at tusseymountainoutfitters.com/outings-rentals/.

Port Matilda. It is 1.3 miles in length. Spring Creek Canyon runs along the winding Spring Creek corridor on a gravel track that is better maintained than ever. It’s flat and kid-friendly, with towering cliffs and prime fishing spots. The trail spans a little over three miles from the end of Shiloh Rd. to Fishermans Paradise in Bellefonte. Watch the Cavalry Church Harvest Fields property in Boalsburg this year. Nittany Mountain Bike Association hopes to ultimately facilitate four to five miles of beginner mountain biking trails there. Construction starts this summer! If you’re looking for an adventurous outing, Ridge Soaring Gliderport is located in Julian, PA, just minutes away from State College. In this privately-owned airline service industry, you’ll find licensed pilots taking guests up for glider flights and giving them an unforgettable experience. Reviews say that where weather lacks to accommodate, hospitality abides. Check out their Facebook page to see videos and reviews of satisfied customers. Fort Roberdeau is a short drive from State College and an excellent seasonal trip for families. They are open year round from 8 a.m. to sunset for families to explore the grounds, and fort tours begin May 1. The fort hosts events, recreational activities and school field trips throughout the year. Don’t miss some of the upcoming 2019 events like Exploring the Night Sky with Lasers on April 12 or Open Sky Watch Night May 10. There’s so much more to see outdoors in Happy Valley and loads of community organizations eager to introduce newcomers to their favorite destinations. Ask any outfitter or fellow visitor for further recommendations and you’ll come away with something to do every day of the year.

Allegrippis Trails Offer Fun for Bikers of All Skill Levels By Abbe Hamilton The Allegrippis Trail System is 36 miles of contoured singletrack mountain bike trail on the north side of Raystown Lake in Hesston, Pennsylvania. It turns ten this year, as if there weren’t enough reasons to celebrate the best mountain biking east of the Mississippi — and just an hour away from State College! How did this gem wind up in Happy Valley’s backyard? Allegrippis Ridge was a remote patchwork of farms and homesteads until the late 1960s, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) acquired the land for the Raystown Lake flood mitigation project. In 2002, “the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the International Mountain Bike Association teamed up to develop mountain bike specific recreation opportunities on Corps property. Raystown was chosen as a
location to build a demonstration trail,” says Brent Rader, a board member of Friends of Raystown Lake, the organization tasked with maintaining the trail system. With an army of passionate local rider volunteers and a DCNR Growing Greener Grant, the entire system was completed and officially opened on May 9, 2009. “The rest, as they say, is history.” Within a year, the trails were attracting 3,000 riders and hikers a month, and visitation doubled again the next year. Currently, the trails are open year-round. You can see Raystown Lake, the largest lake in Pennsylvania, as you cruise the contours of the ridge. With its accessible, looping trails, the ‘Grippis delights riders of every ability level. Pennsylvania mountain biking is characterized by rocky, technical trails — the kind of treatment you receive in Rothrock State Forest. In contrast, the flowy, gradual ups and downs of the Allegrippis trails make you want to go, and go. They’re almost completely free of rocks and roots. The classic Allegrippis view is at the intersection of the Ridge, Berry Patch and Ray’s Revenge trails. It overlooks Hawns Peninsula, the most remote part of Raystown Lake. The unbroken

treeline of Terrace Mountain ridge rises up from the south to frame the vista. The scenery on the trails changes throughout the year. Watch the redbud and dogwood light up the gray understory in early spring. Wild edible mushrooms are plentiful on the trails in midsummer, and it’s common to watch deer sprint up and down ravines while you ride the contours. You can hear the sound of motors on the lake during a sunset loop. Fall rides bring warm breezes off the water at sunset, and early flurries of snow accentuate the zigs and zags of trail in white. The trails are nested in a stacked loop system. This is a huge perk. Stacked loop trails mean that a rider can choose to go farther out or loop back towards the parking lot at every trail intersection, whatever suits their ability level or their preference for that day. According to Allen Gwinn, a park ranger for the USACE at Raystown, “The stacked loop system provides users an
24
opportunity to decide how far and how difficult they want their experience to be.” The farthest trails wind along the lakeshore, 800 feet below the Bakers Hollow trailhead. Mostly, the trails marked “difficult” are not very different in character from the easier ones, they’re just farther from the trailhead and therefore require more endurance and more skill once fatigue sets in. For the truly fanatical, each fall the Huntingdon bike shop Rothrock Outfitters hosts an ALL-egrippis ride, where participants attempt to ride every mile of trail in a grueling 50-mile day. The Allegrippis is designed for riders to complete trails in either direction. “Going down and around and up on a trail in one direction provides a completely different experience from going down, around and up in the other direction,” says Gwinn. If you’re new to Allegrippis, stop by the Raystown Mountain Bike Skills Park, located across Seven Points Road from the Raystown Lake Visitor Center. This bike park can give riders an idea of what to expect on the trails, but on a smaller scale — and it’s a great place for beginner and experienced riders alike to hone their skills. The Buck, Doe and Fawn trails comprise a three-mile loop on flatter ground, with more gradual turns and
Spring 2019 Fun Guide
grades. Beginners who ride them will have a challenging, but rewarding experience. “Those are not so difficult that a new rider would get frustrated, but the features are there to give a rider a taste of what mountain biking is like,” says Gwinn. For your visit, bring water and snacks, although the Bakers Hollow trailhead has a water fountain and vending machine. There are no restrooms at the trailheads. A standard hardtail mountain bike is ideal for the Allegrippis, and Rothrock Outfitters of Huntingdon is the nearest bicycle shop. Ranger Gwinn’s favorite part of the Allegrippis? “Whether in the skills park or the trails in the woods, I enjoy seeing the smiling faces of accomplishment as users return to boast of the fun they just had on the trails. It’s rewarding knowing that all of the work that went into building the trails and the skills park can result in so much success and enjoyment for visitors to Raystown Lake.” Complete your visit with a swim in the lake (the warm shallows on Hydro Loop are popular mid-ride) or a stop at the Ridenour Overlook to see the dam. Don’t forget a celebratory ice cream along Seven Points Road or in Huntingdon; or a craft beer at Boxers! #Allegrippis

It's Summer Fest Time! By Emily Riden
In 1967, the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts was first introduced as a way to bring more of the arts to the area, marking the start of one of Happy Valley’s earliest summer festivals. Now more than 50 years later, ‘Arts Fest’ has not only grown exponentially, so has the lineup of festivals offered each summer throughout Happy Valley. Today, whether your interests involve art, dance, music, wings, wine, fireworks, theatre or even blueberries, you’re nearly guaranteed to find something that you enjoy amidst Happy Valley’s chock-full lineup of festivals held each May to August! From those that have been around for years to the newest additions to the festival calendar, here’s a look at some of the events to look forward to this summer!
Mifflinburg Winefest & Home Brew Competition
Saturday, May 18 | mifflinburgpa.com One of the first festivals on this year’s calendar is also one of the newest. Hosted by the Mifflinburg Heritage & Revitalization 26

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., attendees can enjoy sampling all that Pennsylvania vineyards have to offer with selections from 10 area wineries. Simultaneously, the second annual Home Brew Competition, sponsored by the Rusty Rail Brewing Company, will give local home brewers their chance to vie for major bragging rights, a custom beer trophy, and the privilege of having their beer recipe used and adapted as a sidetrack batch to be served at the Rusty Rail in Mifflinburg.
Central PA Theatre & Dance Festival
Friday, June 21–Sunday, June 23 | centralpatheatre.com Now in its second year, the Central PA Theatre & Dance Festival is an exciting, complete celebration of the performing arts featuring more than 100 events throughout the three days. When it comes to theatre, the festival offers something for nearly everyone, with the show lineup encompassing classical theatre, musical theatre, vaudeville, improv, circus acts, burlesque and more! The same holds true when it comes to dance, with showcases featuring both classical and modern ballet, jazz, tap, belly dancing and others. The State College-based festival is not just about enjoying performances however; it’s also about trying your own hand at something new or improving your own talents and abilities. “We have four brand-new intensives,” said Executive Director Cynthia Mazzant in speaking of some of this year’s new additions, added to an already existing lineup of workshops.“I have two New York City cabaret performers coming in to run their program; we have a comedy improv woman coming in from L.A. so that you could study improv with her for three days. It doesn’t matter what level you are, if you wanted to just come try your hand at something, there’s going to be a lot of strong one-on-one work as well as small group work. It’s three days of digging your hands in and playing and making art.” There is still more though! With an aim at offering something for all ages, the festival is also working with the Schlow Centre Region Library on a special, mini-carnival event, and at the end of the days, the public is encouraged to join in the event’s community-wide dance parties! “If you ever just wanted to learn to cha-cha, or foxtrot, or hip-hop, or ’50s swing, these are free events, so it really is about coming out, embracing yourself and realizing how much fun this is, and how art should be a part of everyday life!” concluded Mazzant.
Central PA 4th Fest
Thursday, July 4 | centralpa4thfest.org For more than 75 years, the Central PA 4th Fest has brought Centre County residents together to celebrate America’s independence, and today, the festival features what the Travel Channel has called “one of the best fireworks displays in the world.” That’s not all though! The festivities begin at 9 a.m. with the running of the annual Firecracker 4k and 4m races, held on the Penn State campus, and continue with an Independence Day Parade through downtown State College to the Bryce Jordan Center at 2 p.m. A wide range of celebration activities, shows and entertainment then kick off at the Penn State Sports Complex at 4 p.m., leading up to the culminating fireworks display at 9:15 p.m.
WingFest at Tussey Mountain
Every Thursday night, July–mid-August | tusseymountain.com/wingfest For seven weeks this summer, $5 is all you need to enjoy a night of live musical entertainment and wings from some of Happy Valley’s best local restaurants! Since its inception 18 years ago, Tussey Mountain’s WingFest has evolved into a wing competition decided by the public’s vote, with up to 30 restaurants participating and each guest receiving one ticket to cast their vote for their favorite wing vendor of the night. The winning restaurants from each of the first six weeks then return for one final face-off on the concluding night of the WingFest! But WingFest is also more than just chicken wings and sauce; State College Magazine previously voted the event the ‘Best Place to See Live Music’ in State College, and each evening also features additional food vendors and the opportunity to enjoy Tussey Mountain’s other activities including go-karts, mini golf, batting cages, and a skate park.

Summer Fun in Happy Valley By Jeff Cavanaugh
State College may be known elsewhere as a football town — but in the summer, the outdoors and baseball steal the show. Batter Up! Baseball Takes Center Stage in the Summer State College Spikes
Summer in Happy Valley means State College Spikes baseball! Under the leadership of first-year coach Jose Leon, the Spikes are looking to capture their third New York-Penn League Championship. The Short-Season A affiliates of the St. Louis Cardinals begin their home schedule on Saturday, June 15, when they take
on the Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia Phillies). The Spikes are never short on creative promotions and their 2019 schedule is no different. This year, fans have the opportunity to submit photos of their dogs to be featured on the Spikes’ Bark in the Park Jerseys that will be worn four times this season. And if you want to increase your chances of your four-legged friends’ picture being featured on the jerseys, you can purchase a Bark in the Park ticket package. The Spikes are accepting dog photo submissions from all fans through Friday, April 26 by emailing BarkInThePark@statecollegespikes.com or by sending a photo to the Spikes through Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. For more information on the State College Spikes or to buy tickets for one of their upcoming games, call (814) 272-1711 or visit statecollegespikes.com.
Penn State Nittany Lions Baseball
The State College Spikes are not the only baseball team winning games at Medlar Field — the Penn State Nittany Lions baseball team started their 2019 season on fire and nearly matched last season’s win total in only the first month of this season! While the season is already underway, there are still lots of exciting home games left on the schedule. The Nittany Lions will host the University of Maryland for a three-game series from April 26 to April 30, and they will welcome the Arizona Wildcats in the final series of the season from May 16 to May 18. Treasures and Tractors Star at the Nittany Antique Machinery Show
Since 1975, people from across the United States have traveled to the Penn’s Cave grounds for the Nittany Antique Machinery Shows. Only a 20-minute ride from downtown State College, this one-of-a-kind event gives everyone an opportunity to find old treasures and make them new. The Spring Show, now in its 45th year, has a flea market with over 700 vendors; over 800 tractors on display; over 800 campers; and more than 40 parts vendors available on the grounds.

Tussey Mountain Offers Much More Than Skiing
Known for some of the best skiing in Pennsylvania in the winter, Tussey Mountain is now a year-round destination for family fun. With outdoor movies, picnics at the pond, go-karts, golfing and everything in between, Tussey Mountain is one of the top destinations for summer fun in all of Pennsylvania. The Fun Centre at Tussey Mountain features go-karts, golfing, batting cages, a skate park and the Mountain Mini-Golf Course. One of the highlights of the Fun Centre is the skate park where riders of all skill levels can make use of a large variety of ramps, quarter-pipes, rails, fly boxes and half-pipe. The park is open daily to skateboarders, in-line skates, BMX bikes, and certain kinds of scooters. Go-karts open Memorial Day weekend and the other activities are all weather-dependent. Tussey Mountain’s free Movies on the Mountain event gives families an opportunity to watch classic movies under the stars. And just like the movies, there will be popcorn, candy, hot dogs, soda and even beer available for purchase. So, bring your blanket, a lawn chair and enjoy a movie night under the stars. Tussey Mountain has something for everyone to enjoy throughout the hot Central Pennsylvania summer! For more information, visit tusseymountain.com

Local Wine and Springtime in Happy Valley By Leah Grubb Here in Happy Valley, it’s no secret that we like our wine — and spirits. Whether we are having a backyard BBQ with the family or are heading out to tailgate at the Penn State game, you’ll see us breaking out refreshing beverages from local wineries, cideries, and distilleries. After all, Mount Nittany Vineyard & Winery has a popular Tailgate Red that pairs perfectly with burgers, hot dogs and BBQ. We have a few months yet before avid fans start packing into Beaver Stadium to see the Nittany Lions play, but don’t worry! You can still enjoy your favorite local beverages by stopping in for a tasting or swinging by an event this spring.
Fresh Tastes at Hungry Run Wine & Spirits
If you haven’t participated in a tasting at Hungry Run Wine & Spirits, you’re missing out on some of the more unique tastes the Central Pennsylvania wine scene has to offer. Sure, they have your traditional sangria and red raspberry wines, but you can also take home a bottle of something you

You don’t want to miss their Bloody Mary event on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at their tasting room inside Squire Brown’s in Reedsville. They’ll serve Bloody Marys from their own vodka, perfectly paired with appetizers.

want to save plenty of time to experience all that Shy Bear Brewing in Lewistown has to offer. The brewery, now in its second year of operation, is a rare gem of culinary and craft-brewed brilliance, surrounded by nature and nestled on a rustic ridge oasis. “Even coming up the lane, you get that feeling like you’re finding something special,” said owner and founder Jason Ufema, who brings years of experience to Shy Bear Brewing after beginning in the beer industry in the ’90s, as he says, “before it was cool.” “It’s not like pulling into a strip mall or another big complex. It’s something a little bit more special,” continued Ufema. “We looked at it as a whole in the area and thought, ‘What can we offer that other places don’t?’ One of the main things is really that outside experience.” To take full-advantage of Shy Bear Brewing’s outdoor space and atmosphere, you may want to plan your tour stop to coincide with the brewery’s special offerings, including movies on the lawn on a 16’ drive-in theatre-style projection screen, live music every Sunday (and on select additional days throughout the week), the dog-friendly patio and more. Five-Star Team Building Corporate Retreats at The Nittany Lion Inn By Cara Aungst Since it opened in 1931, The Nittany Lion Inn has encapsulated the charm of all that’s best about Penn State. From the roaring fire and polished apples that greet you when you check in to the sumptuous meal that awaits in the Dining Room, it’s a destination in itself.
“It’s an excellent destination for all things PSU…” Google Reviews, which can be notably brutal, gives unmitigated praise to back this up. “It’s an excellent destination for all things PSU,” one reviewer sums up. So it’s no surprise at all that the corporate retreats hosted by The Nittany Lion Inn are nothing short of stellar. “One of the best places for a conference in the state,” George L. says. “I recently stayed at The Inn for a conference,” says another reviewer, “everyone I interacted with was friendly, smiling and courteous.
The Inn was spotless and inviting.” Ashley Hardison, a sales manager with the Inn, says that their team helps companies host an unforgettable event by offering a uniquely customized experience. “We help the company by handling all of the details on the vendor side,” she says. “We ask companies to provide three pieces Ashley Hardison of information — dates, number of people, and time of day — then choose from one of the options we offer, and we take it from there!” She and her team link companies up with world class speakers, reserve guest rooms and meeting spaces, organize team building activities and food, all in one conversation. Going above and beyond expectations is something that The Nittany Lion Inn prides itself on, and they promise that retreats held there will be memorable. They partner with local businesses to offer experiences like kayaking with Tussey Mountain Outfitters, fly fishing with Mark Antolosky and ropes courses at Shaver’s Creek. They offer their own version of Iron Chef, featuring their own in-house expert chefs, and their close ties to Penn State allow activities like scavenger hunts through campus. The Nittany Lion Inn has also recently partnered with an interactive gaming company who will also be able to provide unique experiences like giant battleship, human claw, a giant four-person Pac Man and virtual reality simulators. Last year, a retreat for 80 sales professionals culminated with a fiercely competitive campus scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt ended with a group photo at the Lion Shrine, which The Inn had framed and engraved for the company, mailing it to them within days.
“One of the best places for a conference in the state.” Whether you are part of a small company or large corporation, there’s no better place to hold your meeting than at The Nittany Lion Inn. You’ll enjoy unsurpassed service as you experience a corporate retreat that is teambuilding, fun and memorable.
