he Odessa Family Y is not getting a new swimming pool. “We are getting a new multi-purpose aquatic center,” said Odessa Family Y CEO Edward Moreno. Leaky deteriorating cast-iron pipes forced the Y CEO to close down the 44-year-old pool in March of this year, only days before Spring Break. “We knew closing the pool would be unpopular,” said Odessa Family Y Board President Dan Rankin. “But it had reached a point where it was difficult to maintain the existing pool. It was constantly breaking down.” As the name suggests, it is much more than just a pool. “It’s really three pools in one,” Moreno said. “A major portion of the pool will have kid features like water geysers, and two slides. The pool entrance has zero depth, which makes it easier to get in. The bottom gradually slopes to a maximum of six feet on the lap swimmer side. A wall will divide the pool. One side will have two lap lanes and can fit up to
three swimmers. We also planned a better area for aqua aerobic classes too. The depth there will be at four feet. We feel that renovating the pool in this manner, we are mindful of every demographic the Y serves.” Creating a wish list of water amenities for the project felt like Christmas for Odessa Family Y Aquatics Director Susan Mitchell. “We knew what features we really wanted. I looked at local pools and did 4 september 2013 an apple a day
online research. It will be more kid friendly. The new aquatic center will improve everything in my department from swim lessons, to lap swimming, to aqua fitness programs.” Austin area architect Richard Scott is the talent behind incorporating all the desired water elements into a cohesive design. If you watched the 1996 Summer Olympics, you may have seen his work. He was the initial designer for the 50 meter pool and the diving pool for the Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Scott owns Aquatic Excellence and is considered a preferred provider for USA Swim, the national governing body for the sport of swimming in the United States. He has designed over 340 pools. When talking about the Y’s multi-purpose aquatic center, Scott credits Moreno and Mitchell for doing their homework. “A lot of the ideas were from Ed, his Aquatic Director, and staff. He listened and passed that information on to me. They came up with the toys and I drew it to make it work. Ed came up with the dividing wall. He wanted the wall to retain the lap swim area and to provide additional safety for children,” Scott said. Using a new tool in construction and renovation called augmented reality, the architect was able to show Moreno what the finished design would look like. “I’ve never seen anything like it before,” Moreno said. “Using the augmented reality I felt like I was already walking in the new aquatic center. The application uses GPS technology and superimposes the design in three dimensions in that space. Looking at my iPad, I can turn to the shallow end of the pool, and I feel like I’m in the shallow end, I can even look over and see the deep end. I have a 360 degree view of the pool. The app is accurate to one meter. The visual really made it real.” Another state-of-the-art feature for the new natatorium is a comprehensive monitoring system that can alert Mitchell via text if there are any mechanical or environmental problems concerning the aquatic center.
“It will be able to measure the inside and outside temperature, water temperature, any mechanical issues as well as operational mistakes, chemical and water usage. It’s a system that improves both air and water quality. It can prevent mechanical failure by collecting data and determining any potential problems. The system then alerts those in charge before there is an issue or breakdown. This system saves business thousands of dollars on maintenance,” Scott said. In drought-stricken West Texas, the new aquatic center will be more water efficient too. The previous pool held 152,000 gallons of water. The new aquatic center will hold 90,000 gallons without sacrificing size. “There is minimal difference in actual footage size between the old and new pools. What will be different is the increased usage we will have,” Moreno said.
Completion of the multipurpose aquatic center is anticipated for spring 2014. Renderings of the new center are posted throughout the Y, including the front lobby and current pool area. With a price tag of half a million dollars, Moreno is seeking generous benefactors. “For $400,000 you can have naming rights,” Moreno laughed. In a more serious tone, Moreno explained a memorial wall is planned to show appreciation for individuals who donate $500 and up. “It’s important to support the project. Without the pool we couldn’t have swim lessons. Without the pool active older adults and lap swimmers are displaced. When you support the Y, you are supporting the community.” For more information about sponsoring the Odessa Family Y Multi-Purpose Aquatic Center, call 432–362–4301.

ou may not realize it, but you probably know someone who is addicted to alcohol or drugs. Substance addiction affects people in all walks of life, all socioeconomic groups, all ethnicities, both sexes. It’s pervasive and pernicious, but not hopeless. Recovery is possible. September is National Recovery Month (formerly known as National Alcohol and Drug Recovery Month), and it’s worth celebrating, particularly if someone you know is in the process of dealing with addiction, or is in recovery, or has overcome substance abuse and addiction. National Recovery Month aims to promote the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for substance and mental disorders. It also celebrates people in recovery and recognizes the work of treatment and service providers. The message that is emphasized this month is that prevention works, treatment can be effective, and people can and do recover. People who are or have been addicted can live a healthy and rewarding life. Recovery Month events and supporters encourage local action to help expand and improve the availability of effective recovery services for all who need help with addiction.
of the country. SAMHSA’s mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities. The agency was established by Congress in 1992 to make substance use and mental disorder information, services, and research more accessible. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) was one of the founding sponsors of Recovery Month more than 20 years ago and has been active in planning Recovery Month ever since. Helping those who are alcohol and substance abusers and addicts is important, and it is a huge task. The numbers revealing drug and alcohol abuse in the United States are staggering. For example, in today’s teenage population, more than 90 percent have used alcohol, over 50 percent have used marijuana, 17 percent have tried cocaine, and 12.5 percent have experimented with some form of hallucinogenic substance. The average age of first experimentation with drugs is 13, while for alcohol it is even younger. Alcohol is the most widely used drug in the U.S., and it’s the third largest cause of death behind heart disease and cancer, accounting for more than 100,000 deaths per year. It’s the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 15 and 24. Alcohol and other drugs contribute to over half of all suicides and over half of all violent crimes. Over 60 percent of all ER admissions are alcohol- or drugrelated. More than 50 percent of all traffic accidents involve drugs or alcohol, and young people between the ages 16 and 24 are involved in about one-third of all alcohol-related traffic accidents. Drugs and alcohol are a factor in more than three-quarters of all domestic violence incidents. The most commonly

National Recovery Month is sponsored in part by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT). used illegal drug in the U.S. (though some state laws are changing) is marijuana, with over 10 percent of the population using it. Why do some people become addicted and others do not? There are many factors. You are more likely to become addicted if there’s a history of addiction in your family. Childhood abuse, neglect, or other traumatic experiences can be contributing factors, as can mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. And the method of using can contribute— smoking or injecting a drug may increase its addictive potential.
Addictive chemical substances can change the brain at an instinctual level, and these changes result in behavior that perpetuates the use of the drugs regardless of what is best for the individual. The drug simply causes the user to lose control over healthy behavior in relation to the drug. Obtaining and using the drug actually become automatic behaviors, like eating. And the more one uses, the more the behavior is reinforced. Continued on page 20

ost people agree that sex is good. But did you know that it’s also really good for you? Yep, sex offers a host of physical, mental, and emotional benefits you may have never thought about. Some of the positives are just nice little bonuses, like putting you in a good mood, while others can be major life changers, like cancer prevention. Let’s explore the intimate details. (By the way, you might want to use discretion in sharing this article with your young children.) You already know that sex gives you feelings of well-being and puts you in a good mood, but do you know how? Having sex releases pleasureinducing endorphins during arousal and climax that can relieve depression and anxiety. One of the ways that sex may put you in a better mood is by reducing stress. It releases oxytocin (known as the love hormone), which stimulates feelings of warmth and relaxation. People who are sexually active tend to respond better to stressful situations. Sex also lowers your blood pressure. The oxygenation of blood and the focusing of the mind on the moment, away from everyday stressors, help to bring about

lower blood pressure. Regular sex helps to keep it down long-term. Sex also boosts self-esteem and feelings of intimacy with your partner. It helps you feel good about yourself and your relationship. When sex is regular and mutually satisfying, it can increase bonding, with help from our new-found friend mentioned above, oxytocin. It can lead to deeper intimacy and a stronger relationship. Want to burn calories without pedaling the elliptical trainer? Thirty minutes of sex burns up to 200 calories, which is equal to 15 minutes of running on a treadmill. That may not sound like very much, but it can add up, particularly with frequent sex over time. It can actually help you lose weight, plus sex improves strength, flexibility, muscle tone, and cardiovascular conditioning. Some of the muscles that sex helps strengthen are the pelvic floor muscles, which can lead to better control of the bladder later in life. Kegel exercises can help even more—just tighten your muscles as if you’re trying to stop the flow of urine, count to three, release, and repeat five times, gradually increasing the repetitions. ust look at the magazine articles—our diet anxiety is obvious. Dozens of articles and books offer quick fixes that we desperately want to believe in. Some of the titles are hopeful: “The Five Day Miracle Diet,” “Eat More and Lose Weight.” Others blame food addiction for weight problems, “The Carbohydrate Addict’s Program for Success.” Some have power titles like “Fight Fat and Win,” “Eat to Succeed,” and “Eat to Win.” Behind this remains the cold hard fact: we’re desperate to lose weight.

But if losing weight is a good idea, health care providers tell us the fad diet is not the way to go. Most are unhealthy and some are downright dangerous. Usually fad diets focus on one particular food or type of food, contradicting the guidelines for good nutrition, which recommend eating a variety of foods. They almost always promise quick or dramatic results, encourage the use of pills, potions or supplements, and base their claims on very few studies. Just for grins, here’s a description of some fad diets that we’ve all heard about. You may feel your heart race a little faster because you used one of these diets, but don’t be embarrassed. It’s a very human reaction to want the easier, softer way. We all know they didn’t work. But read about them anyway—it’s amazing how we’ve experimented with our bodies! The Blood Type Diet—Focuses food intake around your blood type. The diet states that the blood type reacts differently to different types of lectins in foods. The Acid and Alkaline Diet—Focuses on fruit, vegetables, and legumes. The diet is based on the scientifically unsupported view that certain foods leave an alkaline residue. The alkaline diet involves eating fresh citrus and low sugar fruits, vegetables, tubers, nuts, and legumes and avoiding dairy, meat, sugar, alcohol, and caffeine and is supposed to maintain the balance of slight alkalinity of blood. The Lemon Detox Diet/the Master Cleanse Detox Diet—Requires dieters to subsist on a mixture of water, maple syrup, freshly squeezed Continued on page 12

Continued from page 10 lemon juice, and cayenne pepper or ginger. The dieter has to drink up to 10 glasses of this lemon juice mixture which supposedly promotes inner cleansing and flushes wastes from the system. The Cabbage Soup Diet—Eat as much as you like, as long as it’s cabbage soup. The Raw Food Diet—Said to be the secret behind the slender figure of Demi Moore, who believes that cooking food destroys its goodness. The diet claims cooking food destroys the natural enzymes and nutrients. It includes uncooked fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, and vegetable oils. The Ear Stapling Diet—One of the stranger fad diets, it claims that clipping a staple around the cartilage in the center of the ear can suppress your appetite. The Baby Food Diet— Requires dieters to snack on pots of mashed banana goo to stay thin. The Cookie Diet— Involves eating four cookies instead of breakfast and lunch. This is my favorite.
The Purple Diet—Requires eating only grapes, beetroot, and other purple-colored foods three days a week. The Low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet of the 1980’s. The Low-carbohydrate, high-protein movement of the 1990’s. The South Beach Diet—Focuses on using “good carbs,” low glycemic index carbohydrates instead of “bad carbs.” It’s to be followed for two weeks, and strictly removes sugars and processed carbohydrates. The second phase is less strict in that it reintroduces fruits and grains into the diet. That phase is to be continued until the target is reached. The third phase is maintenance, to be followed indefinitely. The High- Protein Diet—Focuses on high protein but also includes items that are higher in fats than generally acceptable. High-fat diets can raise blood cholesterol levels which increases a person’s risk for heart disease and certain cancers. High protein diets force the kidneys to try to get rid of the excess waste products of protein and fat, called ketones. A buildup of ketones in the blood (called ketosis) can cause the body to produce high levels of uric acid, which is a risk factor for gout (a painful swelling of the joints) and kidney stones.
But if losing weight is a good idea, health care providers tell us the fad diet is not the way to go. Most are unhealthy and some are downright dangerous.
The Breatharian Diet— Allows you to consume air. It is based on the extreme fasts practiced by Eastern mystics. Please. The Ice Cube Diet – Says to stave off hunger pangs by crunching on these frozen “treats.” The Grapefruit Oil Diet—Supports the aromatherapy approach which says the oil’s scent stops you from feeling hungry. Dieters keep a vial nearby to sniff a whiff during the day. The Grapefruit Diet—Promotes eating only grapefruit for breakfast and dinner. This diet leaves 12 september 2013 an apple a day
the dieter with some vitamin deficiencies and teeth damaged from the overload of citric acid.
The Feast Diet or 5:2 Diet—This claims you will lose weight and live longer if you feast for five days and fast for two. Eat normally for five days and on two non-consecutive fast days the dieter may only eat a prescribed number of calories only.
Six Weeks to OMG: Get Skinnier than All Your Friends Diet—Coffee, exercise on an empty stomach, and cold baths as well as whole foods and no carbs make this diet. Start the day by drinking two cups of black coffee then exercise for 30 minutes to an hour. Next, fast for three hours, then sit in a cold (15-20C) bath; allow no carbohydrates and limit sugar and fruit. The diet allows for lean meat, fish, chicken, and whole foods like lentils, legumes, and brown rice. Dieters only have main meal, no grazing. Cretan Mediterranean Diet—This diet is based on the fact people who live around the Mediterranean Sea live longer, have less heart disease, fewer strokes, and lower cancer rates than other cultures. The basics include low intake of red meat, lots of fish, and a wide variety of plant foods: fresh fruits, leafy greens, onions, garlic and tomatoes, beans, legumes, nuts, and whole grain bread. Dukan Diet—This is a four-phase diet, the first involves eating unlimited amounts of low-fat animal protein, for up to 10 days. It is a high-protein, lowfat, low-carbohydrate diet that includes 100 foods,

TREATING ECZEMA by Joy Harriman
E
czema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that causes the skin to become irritated, inflamed, itchy or scaly, and can create rashes or swollen patches of skin. It can be caused by a number of irritants which may never be identified. There is no natural or pharmaceutical cure yet for this skin problem that tends to run in families and affects more than 15 million Americans. But the remedies listed here are considered generally safe and may be added to your physician’s recommended treatment plan. Be sure to discuss with a professional first, however, to be safe! Irritants or triggers are different for different people. The key to managing eczema is to identify your triggers. Seasonal Changes: changes in the weather and the seasons can cause increased sensitivity in some people. The lack of humidity in the air during the colder months can be a contributing factor. An easy solution there would Some body creams be to increase the humidity in your home that claim to calm with a humidifier, or by skin actually contain placing a bowl of water irritating ingredients. in the corner of each room. Make sure your heating is kept on low to medium, not high, so it doesn’t leach moisture from the air. Dry Skin: Those with eczema tend towards dry to very dry skin. The skin’s lipid barrier is compromised and this allows more moisture to escape and also leaves it vulnerable to environmental aggressors, such as pollution, smoke, and icy winds. This can be further multiplied when the temperature drops. Maintain and protect your skin’s moisture barrier by avoiding very hot showers and using a soap-free, unscented body wash in place of traditional soap. Rehydrate with a gentle, fragrance-free body lotion all over, every day. Consider not washing every part of you every day as you can strip your already 16 september 2013 an apple a day
vulnerable skin of more of its protective oils. Only wash the parts you need to and leave your arms and legs for a few days. Consider adding a sprinkle of baking soda or uncooked oats to a warm bath for a skin-soothing effect. When drying off, blot—don’t rub—your skin with a towel. Apply your doctor-approved body lotion while your skin is damp; if it feels superparched, mix half a teaspoon of body oil into your dollop of lotion. For some nighttime relief, trim your nails and wear lightweight cotton gloves or socks on your hands to bed so you don’t scratch yourself in your sleep. Call your doctor if you’re too itchy to sleep, you suspect your skin is infected, or your condition doesn’t improve within a few days. Some body creams that claim to calm skin actually contain irritating ingredients. Cosmetic moisturizers are not appropriate as they are generally perfumed and have additional properties such as sunscreens or anti-ageing ingredients. The

dietitian, stick to natural, unprocessed whole foods. A largely plant-based, easily digested diet can help. Consider almond or coconut milk instead of dairy; lentils, nuts, or other plant protein sources instead of eggs; and quinoa or brown rice instead of wheat.
Harsh Fabrics: Wool, nylon, and some other fabrics can irritate eczema, as they can scratch the skin or cause it to heat up and perspire. Stick to pure cotton fabrics, particularly in times of inflammation. Labels and rough seams can also irritate. Consider running your clothing and bedding through a second rinse cycle in the washer to eliminate any detergent residue. And skip dryer sheets, which leave a coating that worsens dryness.
Stress: Stress has been shown to be a factor in eczema. Stress breaks down the skin’s protective barrier, which means we don’t heal as well. It also compromises immunity, making you less able to defend against allergens. Get plenty of sleep, pace yourself, drink lots of water, exercise, and hydrate your skin from the inside and out. Employ stressrelieving techniques such as yoga, meditation or swimming.
Diet: While some eczemas are not aggravated by diet, there are physicians or dietitians who can screen for food allergies. The common food triggers associated with eczema include gluten, eggs, peanuts, dairy, and soy. Alcohol can trigger it as well. After consulting with your physician or

Continued from page 9 With the cardiovascular conditioning comes improved heart health. A 20-year-long British study showed that men who had sex two or more times a week were half as likely to suffer a fatal heart attack than men who had sex less than once a month. And overall, sex makes men live longer. Studies have shown that men who have two orgasms a week have a 50 percent lower chance of mortality than those who climax once a month. Sex also improves blood circulation and lowers total cholesterol level while helping to balance the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol. In addition to the enhanced blood flow to the body, sex increases blood flow to the brain, delivering an extra boost of glucose that it uses as energy, making you a bit sharper mentally. Remember oxytocin, the love hormone? The endorphins that it kicks into action during sex are also your body’s natural painkillers. Endorphins cause the “runner’s high” that people experience during strenuous aerobic exercise. Headache, arthritis pain, chronic back pain, menstrual or PMS symptoms, among other discomforts, may be diminished after sex. Instead of not having sex because of a headache, sex might be the best thing to make the headache go away! In fact, even migraines may be relieved because the pressure in the brain’s blood vessels gets lowered during sex. Your immune system can be boosted by sexual activity. Once or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A (IgA), which can protect you from getting colds and other infections. Sexually active people take fewer sick days. And they also experience better sleep. Once again, oxytocin is the primary reason, but another hormone, called prolactin, is also released during orgasm. Since prolactin levels are naturally higher during sleep, there may be a relationship between the two. Along with helping to prevent colds, sex may also help prevent cancer. Research has shown that frequent ejaculations, especially in men in their 20s, may lower the risk of prostate cancer later in life as much as 33%, and the more ejaculations per month, the better. One study of women who had never given birth found that an increased frequency of sex correlated with a decrease in the incidence of 18 september 2013 an apple a day
breast cancer. Sex also helps prevent endometriosis in women, and it promotes a woman’s fertility by regulating menstrual patterns. During sex, a woman’s estrogen level doubles, and this makes her hair shine and her skin softer. Among the substances released during orgasm is the youth-promoting hormone dehydroepiandrostone (DHEA), which helps heal the skin from damage caused by the sun, smoking, and cortisol buildup (which is associated with the thinning of the skin). A Scottish study showed that people who have sex every other day look dramatically younger than others their age, as much as 12 years younger. There are some health habits you can practice that will make sex better and more enjoyable. First, don’t smoke. Smoking constricts blood vessels and damages the small arteries that supply blood to the penis, causing erections that are weaker and more difficult to maintain. Eat a healthy diet that is rich in nutrients and low in fats. Include plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, and low-fat milk. And exercise regularly to keep your blood flowing, your muscles toned, and your cardiovascular system fit. Our bodies change as we age, and both men and women experience changes that affect sexual activity. Certain medical conditions can also influence the desire and the capability to have sex. Some medications can also inhibit sexual response, but the relatively new ED drugs (Cialis, Viagra, etc.) are helping millions of men and their partners enjoy sex more. The key is to communicate openly with your partner and have frank and open discussions with your health care professional about sex as you age. Advanced age doesn’t automatically mean an end to great sex. Sex is a natural and essential part of the human experience. It’s also really good for you. With a healthy lifestyle, you can enjoy all the benefits of sex. And perhaps the best is yet to come.
Continued from page 7 The situation sounds hopeless, but it’s not. Treatment is available and can be very effective. According to SAMHSA, 40 percent of those who enter a treatment facility (a little over one million per year) successfully complete treatment. Effective recovery treatment can be broken down into two basic actions: 1) Consistently avoid the addictive substance, and 2) Persistently seek support from others who can help you break the learned destructive behaviors. This is where treatment centers are so effective. The person is removed from
the tempting situation, and counselors help modify the damaging behaviors. The Permian Basin area is fortunate to have many organizations involved in addressing substance abuse. The Permian Basin Regional Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Midland 432–570–4058) is a good place to start. And there are many treatment facilities and programs, including Palmer Drug Abuse Program (Midland 432–685–3645), Turning Point (Odessa 432–580–2654), Pacesetters, She’s For Sure, Top Rank Youth, and Co-Occurring Psychiatric and Chemical Dependency Programs (Midland 432–570–3300, Odessa 432–333–3265).

HOMEOPATHIC RECOMMENDATIONS There are many homeopathic recommendations for relief from eczema. The majority of them are accompanied by a note of caution when dealing with this condition: higher potencies are more likely to aggravate the symptoms than lower ones, and even lower potencies are capable of aggravating this condition. Always share them with your health care provider prior to using them. Self-medicating by any remedy or an over-the-counter solution obtained through a general article discussing potential relief is dangerous.
Celebrating recovery is important. It’s why Recovery Month was established. There are events nationwide this month, and one will be held in San Angelo (Yes, it’s a long way, but this is West Texas) on September 7, 2013. It’s the 9th Annual Let It GO! Recovery Rally & Run, sponsored by the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Council for the Concho Valley (ADACCV). It will be held at El Paseo, at the corner of S. Oakes and E. Ave. D. Registration for the 1 Mile/5K walk/ run begins at 7:30 am, and the event starts at 8:30 am. You’ll be inspired by recovery speakers who share their experience, and you’ll also enjoy the balloon release at 11 am, which symbolizes people
letting go of their addiction. Brisket plates go on sale at 11:15 am. You can find out more about the event by calling 325–224–3481. When the gravity of the substance abuse problem in the U.S. is considered, it’s evident why addressing the situation is so important. Prevention, treatment, and recovery are important parts of the health care services for the community, and they can be effective in turning the problem around, one patient at a time. Let’s celebrate recovery this month!

M
indless eating can quickly add inches to your middle, destroying all of your good dieting progress. In social situations where there are more than two of you dining together, the meal will typically last much longer than usual. In these instances, you may find yourself “finishing off” the bread basket or chip bowl even after eating your meal while continuing to socialize. Eating in front of the TV or computer without a limited portion of food is another form of mindless eating that also leads to unwanted weight gain. We all have an ingrained desire for an ending or closure. Even in regards to our eating meals. Implementing an end-of-meal trigger can be an easy trick you can start right now. An end-of-meal trigger can be a great tool for you at every meal if you are having trouble with overeating or are simply choosing to eliminate desserts or drinks for various health reasons. Traditionally, dessert or an after-dinner drink has been the designated ending to a meal. For most, this is a subconscious habit formed over many years. Eliminating these diet pitfalls can significantly help with health and weight loss, but most often leaves the person feeling unsatisfied and deprived. This can eventually lead to falling off the diet wagon. Implementing a new end-of-meal trigger will help replace the old, bad habit with a good one, leaving you satisfied mentally and healthier in the long run.
Have a cup of coffee, green tea, or other herbal tea to end your meal.
If you need help in this area, please contact me at www.getfitwithkimtoday.com. Below are some healthier end-of-meal triggers to help you find what works best for you: • Have a cup of coffee, green tea, or other herbal tea to end your meal. Most restaurants will bring you a cup of hot water if they do not offer hot teas. Tea bags are easy items to keep at your desk, in your purse, or your vehicle. • Brush your teeth. This is healthy in more ways than one! If you are not at home, carrying a toothbrush and toothpaste with you may not be a viable option. However, the disposable travel kind like Colgate Wisps are convenient and easy to keep in your vehicle, purse, or at your desk. But please brush in private and not at the table. • Chew gum or have a mint. • Take a walk. Not only can this count towards your daily total for exercise, but you can walk outside and get your sunshine vitamin too (vitamin D). Walking after a meal also aids in digestion. And the sunshine and fresh air elevate your mood so you won’t be as apt to getting the afternoon slumps. Remember that it takes about 20 minutes for your body to register that it’s full. So, eat slowly. Chew thoroughly. Stop eating just short of reaching that “full” feeling. And implement a healthy end-of-meal trigger. You will be well on your way to a healthier life filled with energy.

T
his summer has been so hot. I don’t know if it’s always this hot or if I am just becoming more intolerant to it. My age is probably what makes it so unbearable because I see all the kids who seem to take it just fine. Kids can have fun no matter what. They don’t worry about being barefoot in the cold or frying their skin like bacon in the sun. Dogs are the same way too. Some dogs do okay in the cold or the heat; others act like they will tear down the door if you don’t let them in.
Tammy took the dog home and tried finding her owner with no luck. She called her “Grandma” because she was old and seemed very tired.
With this heat, I think all the animals outside want to come inside. I was just speaking with a friend of mine who was telling me she was having trouble with animals, bugs, and flies that are trying to come in her house, including a few field mice. Then she told me a story of another uninvited guest that had decided to come in from the heat. Tammy was driving along and saw a dog in a busy intersection. The dog was older and seemed very confused and scared. It was so hot, she knew its paws were burning. It had almost been run over several times and was circling around instead of coming straight out of the traffic. She pulled over and began to call to the dog and try to coax her over. That just frightened her more and she took off running and climbed under a parked truck. Tammy wasn’t ready to give up so she sat on the curb, talking softly to comfort this poor girl. Almost an

hour later, the old girl came to her. Tammy took the dog home and tried finding her owner with no luck. She called her “Grandma” because she was old and seemed very tired. She mostly lay around all day and had very low energy. She would follow Tammy around the house but would lie down in each room. Then one day, as Tammy was putting a few items away, she opened a lower cabinet door. When she did, a snake popped out like it was a jack-in-thebox. Scared her to death, but Grandma jumped on the snake and tore it up like she was a puppy. She killed the snake without hesitation, rescuing the one who had rescued her. Fortunately, Grandma wasn’t bitten but she did seem injured or sick, so Tammy took her to her vet the next day. Apparently Grandma has a heart condition and with a daily pill she will be okay. Right now, the whole family is thankful for Grandma. Tammy rescued Grandma and Grandma rescued her right back. I think that is a beautiful story. It reminds me of this quote by Lloyd Alexander: She had no particular breed in mind, no usual requirement. Except the special sense of mutual recognition that tells dog and human they have both come to the right place.

health & beauty ALL ABOUT TANNING BEDS
W
hy continue abusing your skin with your addiction to tanning beds, when there are terrific self-tanning lotion options available today? While a tan may be the most attractive accessory in the world, the health issues that come with UV tanning aren’t attractive in any way! Take a look at how UV rays can not only wreck your skin, but also wreck havoc on your health. DANGERS OF UV TANNING BEDS: WRINKLES, AGING AND SKIN CANCER You may be well aware of the dangers associated with getting too much sun. You may even wear sunscreen every time you hit the outdoor pool to avoid getting a sunburn. But, did you know tanning beds can be just as dangerous? Not only do their ultraviolet rays lead to increased wrinkles, but they can also cause cancer. Melanoma, basal, and squamous cell carcinomas are often found on the face and neck. However, when you tan often they can be found all over the body. These are deadly forms of cancer that are often caught too late to be treated. Getting a yearly skin check is vital to your health. Your doctor can examine your skin and note any changes in moles and appearance.
No longer are the days of the orangeself-tanning experiences.
BEAUTY MYTH: TANNING BEDS ARE SAFER THAN THE SUN Tanning beds do not create a safer tan than the sun. The only safe “tan” that exists requires no sun at all (i.e. sunless tanner products or learn to love your natural skin tone). A tanning bed does limit your exposure to UVB rays that are abundant in sunshine. UVB rays cause burning of the top layer of skin. However, a tanning bed produces 3 to 8 times the UVA rays that the sun does. UVA rays can do just as much skin damage as UVB and actually penetrate deeper into the skin layers. UVA and UVB rays (together or separately) can cause skin cancer, premature aging, wrinkles, DNA damage,
age spots, and other not-so-attractive skin ailments. Some doctors even say that tanning beds are contributing to the increase in skin cancer amount young people. SAFER SUNLESS ALTERNATIVES TO UV TANNING BEDS Since you now know what tanning beds can do for your health, we’ll give you the good news. Safe self tanning products are more abundant than ever! No longer are the days of the orange-self-tanning experiences. Instead, tanners can choose from the best posh sunless salons to indoor airbrushing. Those who are still a bit unsure about applying selftanners themselves can step into a spray tanning booth for fool-proof application. Lasting only about one minute, these booths are ideal for people who want color instantly and without risks to the health. If spray tanning booths aren’t in your budget, consider getting a natural tanning enhancer lotion. These lotions allow you to tan gradually, which often lead to an even tanning experience. They work with your body’s natural melanin to give you a great color. Enhanced with bronzer products, they allow you to develop a natural glow over time. Coppertone, European Gold, and Swedish Beauty are all brands offering natural means of bronzing and tanning your skin in a risk-free manner. GET A GLOWING LOOK WITH MAKEUP: TRY APPLYING BRONZER Remember, you can get that glowing tan you love without exposing yourself to harmful UV rays. Try self-tanning methods to see which one best fits your needs. You’ll likely find today’s formulas are safe and effective. They no longer leave you with orange palms or streaks of brown on your legs. Instead, they can be applied easily and without error. You can get a glow in four hours or less, without the risks associated with tanning indoors or outdoors. This month's article courtesy of www.freebeautytips.org
