VISION elson floyd
15
To become a doctor, To reach for one of the highest levels of academic pursuits, To dedicate your life to helping others, And then to also serve those with the greatest need in your home state. It was President Elson S. Floyd who cast the vision for a medical school at Washington State University. It was the vision to train physicians who would work in Washington where there is a shortage of doctors, especially in rural and underserved communities, but a
vision of this magnitude could not be accomplished by one leader alone.
17
And so a special group rose to the occasion, adopting the vision as their own.
They joined the journey to create a medical school by voicing their support and generously donating the funds to make it happen.

NEW STATE LAW

Before the vision could move forward, there had to be a change to a Washington state law, established in 1917, that restricted medical education to only one school in the state. When House Bill 1559, which would change that law, came before the Washington State Legislature on March 9th, 2015, it passed by a vote of 81 to 17. Less than a month later, Governor Jay Inslee signed the bill authorizing a medical school to be established at Washington State University.
As soon as the bill was signed, the vision could move forward. And that it did.

GRADUATE class of 2021
47
And so we celebrate the inaugural graduating class for their hard work and commitment. They are doctors who will share both knowledge and compassion. Who will lead us through the coming decades of medical innovation as they heal, care for, and change the lives of their patients. And, we honor you, those who heard the vision and adopted it. Donors who supported the mission, and generously gave to make the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine a reality.
Thank you. And congratulations.
