The Open Hi-Hat Sound
You create this sound by hitting the hi-hat cymbals precisely at that moment when you open the hi-hat with your foot.
You can hit the hi-hat cymbals with the tip of your stick or with its shoulder, which will produce a bigger sound.

Practice both ways.

Left stick plays the hi-hat
Step quarter notes on the hi-hat
Simultaneously you play the snare drum with your right hand
Add the left stick on each '+' on the snare drum
When you feel comfortable, try switching the left stick from the snare drum to the hi-hat cymbals - done!
Right stick plays the hi-hat
Step quarter notes on the hi-hat

Simultaneously you play the snare drum with your left hand
Add the right stick on each '+' on the snare drum
When you feel comfortable, try switching the right stick from the snare drum to the hi-hat cymbals (crossing over the left arm).
