JERRY DIAZ AND CO A Charro (pronounced Cha 'ro) is a skilled Mexican horseman whose origins date back to the 17th century. The charro, who developed customs, dress, music and equestrian skills later borrowed by the American cowboy, dress in traditional costume and are skilled in horsemanship, bull riding, horse and steer roping and trick roping. Charro Gerardo 'Jerry' Diaz is a fourth generation charro, continuing the traditions that originated with his great grandfather over 150 years ago. Jerry is recognized around the world for his expertise in horsemanship and dedication to the Charro traditions. He is a director and lifetime member of the National Western Stock Show which features his productions, The Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza and the Evening of Dancing Horses. In 2004 Jerry Diaz was inducted to the Texas Trail of Fame. The Diaz family lives in New Braunfels, Texas, where they operate Three Mile Creek Ranch, a 50-acre horse operation. AUSTIN ANDERSON Austin Anderson is a third generation entertainer having performed with his parents' shows since the age of four. He is backed by The Texas White Horse Ranch, the leader in equine entertainment for over 40 years. Created in 2004, the Texas Trick Riders cater to state fairs and expos. Only the best acts are part of an action packed show. A movie stunt man, horseman, and entertainer, Austin draws from his vast experience to help produce the show. Austin and the Texas Trick Riders offer several package deals as well as individual acts. Personalization is their goal. No two events are exactly the same. LEW SMITH
Lew and Sandra Smith of Round Top, Texas show off the versatility of their three Friesians in ridden dressage, riding and driving pleasure shows, and their favorite event, Combined Driving. Combined driving is one of the toughest competitions for a horse. Patterned after eventing, it is a three phase competition usually lasting three days and consisting of dressage, a cross-country marathon over several miles which includes timed obstacles (called "hazards") and a cones course that tests the speed and accuracy of the driver and horses. All three of their Friesians ride and drive and both Sandra and Lew interchangeably serve as the "whip" (a carriage term for the driver) while Lew rides or serves as the "gator" (short for navigator) whose primary job is to balance the carriage during fast turns. Lew will be driving a pair of geldings put to a modern marathon carriage which is used in the combined driving events. The carriage is built to withstand speed events and fast turns. Marianne Swim, also from Round Top, will be serving as the gator. Following American Society Driving Rules, Lew as the whip, must carry a whip, which is not used to punish the horse but rather to be used as a light aid, much like the leg of the rider. The Friesians shown as a pair are Isaac, a six year old gelding who is still learning his job and Apollo, an eight year old gelding who was the United States Champion colt for the German Keuring for the year 2000.
