DEAN BILL HARDGRAVE

In 2012, with careful consideration of a milestone in the college’s history, faculty and staff (with input from many stakeholders) worked together to write a new strategic plan. The results of their work, entitled “Auburn Business @ 50,” challenged us to take some new approaches and develop the capacity to accomplish things that once seemed unattainable.

We haven’t yet crossed all of the more than 100 action items off of our To Do list, but we are proud of the progress we have made as we draw closer to the college’s 50th anniversary in 2017. There has been an incredible amount of change in a short time, thanks to the transformational gift in 2013 that led to our reintroduction as the Harbert College of Business and the generosity of so many others who viewed our academic programs, faculty research, and students as investments with incredible potential for return. You will see evidence of our progress on the pages of this annual report, but we are excited about some additional changes on the horizon.

We continue our search for a select group of faculty to fill eminent scholar and endowed chair positions in business analytics, finance, and supply chain. From our perspective, it is crucial to find scholars and researchers whose talents align with our future vision. This year, we will launch a new supply chain research center and are in the process of developing a new research center devoted to investments and wealth management.

Recently, our online graduate programs – both the MBA and non-MBA (Master of Accountancy, M.S. in Finance, M.S. in Information Systems) – earned Top 10 national rankings from U.S. News & World Report. We have long been known as innovators in online education and continue to identify new ways to serve students and meet industry needs. We launched the university’s first online undergraduate degree program – a BSBA in accounting for second degreeseeking professionals – earlier this year and plan to begin offering a new online undergraduate degree in business administration in the fall. We are also exploring ways to offer quality graduate programming for nonbusiness undergraduates. This year, we expect to introduce the MBA+, which will enable graduates from engineering, human sciences, and other disciplines to develop a strong business foundation.

These initiatives, which will help the college be even stronger in its next 50 years than it was in its first half-century, are possible because of your support. We are deeply appreciative of your willingness to invest in the college’s programs and people.

PayScale’s 2014-2015 College Salary Report found that Harbert College MBA graduates earn an average mid-career salary of $132,200, representing a 55 percent increase over their starting salary. Auburn ranked 10th nationally among public university MBA programs and 32nd overall in PayScale’s survey.

Azeem Ahmed, a 2014 finance graduate, was one of two Rhodes Scholarship finalists from Auburn University. Ahmed earned the Worldwide Clinton Hunger Leadership Award and Auburn University’s President’s Award in 2014 for his work with the university’s War on Hunger Initiative.

More than 250 managerial accounting students offered financial literacy tips for local middle school students as part of “The Benjamin Bash” in October 2014. A group of Advanced Business Finance students served as IRS Volunteer Tax Preparers in 2014, helping nearly 100 low-income working families receive more than $200,000 in tax refunds while saving them more than $30,000 in commercial tax preparation fees.

The Shareholders’ Club recognizes the highest levels of leadership in annual giving to the Harbert College of Business Gift Fund. YOUNG ALUMNI In summer 2014, Harbert College Young Alumni Chapters were launched in Birmingham and Atlanta. Utilizing alumni volunteer leadership teams in each city, the inaugural events welcomed 100 guests in each location. The groups continue to thrive with quarterly happy hour and speaker series events. Each event offers the opportunity for networking and professional development, along with additional opportunities to collaborate and socialize with peers. Dean Hardgrave also matched all student gifts to the college encouraging students to begin an early legacy of support to the college through private giving.

BACK TO BUSINESS BBQ More than 1,000 Harbert College students gathered on the Lowder Hall lawn Friday, Aug. 22, for three hours of free barbecue, souvenir Mason jar cups, dessert and iced tea, as the college celebrated the start of the 2014-2015 academic year.

EXPLORING RFID One of the world’s premier research centers in the area of

radio frequency identification, or RFID, technology and research now calls Auburn University home.

In June 2014, the RFID Research Center relocated from the University of Arkansas to Auburn University, opening the door for research collaborations involving faculty in the Harbert College of Business, as well as the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering and College of Human Sciences, among others.

Now known as the RFID Lab at Auburn University, the institute focuses on business case studies and the technical implementation of RFID and other emerging technology in supply chain, retail and manufacturing environments.

Sponsors of the lab include Motorola, Tyco, Avery Dennison, Checkpoint Systems, NXP Semiconductors, Smartrac, GS1US, Passenger Baggage Xpress and VF Corp.

Harbert College Dean Bill Hardgrave founded the lab and served as its director during his time at the University of Arkansas. The RFID Lab occupies 13,000 square feet of space in a former supermarket near campus.

STOP IN AND HAVE A CUP Harbert College students, faculty and alumni now have a new place where ideas and discussions can percolate.

The college celebrated the opening of a 3,000-square foot student and faculty lounge with a full-featured Starbucks. The new lounge offers indoor seating for 112 customers, as well as an outdoor seating area.
