From the President

AT HARCUM, everyone takes our students’ success to heart. This commitment is reflected in the new Art & Design Center, which will relocate the Art & Design programs to Harcum’s main campus. This commitment also inspired the launch of the first JV Women’s Basketball team and a second JV Men’s Basketball team, building opportunities for students to participate in Harcum’s highly successful athletic community. This commitment is also part and parcel of the immense and enduring value of a Harcum education for its graduates. As this issue of Patches shows, Harcum’s commitment to its students informs everything we do.

to a Harcum education’s lasting value for its students — value as high job placement, as earned income, as job satisfaction, and as personal development and confidence.

The exciting addition of the new Art & Design Center on the Bryn Mawr campus, slated for completion for Fall 2024, reflects Harcum’s rich arts tradition and pride in the successes of our design graduates. The Art & Design programs represent the College’s commitment to fostering creativity. This issue’s success stories from design program alumni like Sheila Hudson ’22 and Evyona Rickenbach ’21 offer a glimpse of the artistry the Center will cultivate, serving as a hub for artistic exploration and community engagement.

To bring this vision to life, collective support is pivotal. The College’s fundraising goal of $1M for the new Art & Design Center is ambitious but achievable with the help of the Harcum community. Thanks to donor support, we are more than halfway there. This initiative, like so many others, reflects pride in our students and joy in their successes.

HARCUM MILE UPDATE: UNVEILING HATCHER HALL

Exploring the Harcum Mile continues to captivate First Lady Margi DeTemple and Librarian and Archivist Roxanne Sutton. Their journey led them on an architectural tour of Bryn Mawr’s campus in May, guided by Dr. Jeffrey A. Cohen, a distinguished professor in the Growth & Structure of Cities. Throughout the tour, Cohen highlighted the architectural talents of Addison Hutton, renowned for crafting buildings at Bryn Mawr College and Haverford College.

One of the tour materials captured DeTemple and Sutton’s attention: an 1879 photo of Hutton’s family at Hatcher Hall taken during their residency. Built in 1877 on a parcel of Dr. William Savery’s land and purchased for the college by Edith Harcum in 1945, Hatcher Hall used to be a campus cornerstone, serving as a dormitory, a classroom space, and even a library. In 2002, Harcum College sold Hatcher Hall, which sits at the intersection of Morris and Montgomery Avenues and has been converted into an apartment condominium.

As DeTemple and Sutton delve deeper into Harcum’s past, the history of the Harcum Mile continues to come to life.

Art & Design: A Harcum Tradition

Established in 1915, Harcum College has a storied legacy of championing the Arts. The legacy’s origins are humble: the first class at the College began with three students and five pianos. Today, however, Harcum is the home of many vibrant design disciplines: Interior Design, Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising, and Graphic Design.

Fashion Design alumna

Evyona Rickenbach ’21 flourishes post-graduation, opening a boutique in Ephrata, PA

Art and Design programs are the foundation of a holistic education dedicated to societal advancement. These programs not only reflect a commitment to preserve culture and transmit it to future generations but also foster innovative thinking and nurture creativity. They contribute significantly to the economy, especially in creative sectors like graphic design, fashion, and interior design. With the rapid adoption of digital media and communications, the demand for professionals skilled in design fields like graphic design is surging.

The success stories of Harcum’s Design alumni are a testament to the enduring excellence of the Art & Design programs. Take Harcum’s Fashion Design graduate

EVYONA RICKENBACH ’21, who launched an online boutique, For His Glory Boutique, complementing her digital presence by hosting in-person pop-up shops. This past May, she expanded her brand by opening a physical store in Ephrata, PA. Rickenbach, who is passionate about designing her own pieces, began her Harcum journey to learn sewing skills. Reflecting on her transformative experience at Harcum, she said, “The program enhanced my sewing skills. Along with the fashion courses, the business classes I took equipped me to identify my target audience. This knowledge provided the niche I needed to start my own store.” Other Fashion program graduates have secured positions at international powerhouses like Reebok, Banana Republic, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Many Graphic Design alumni have also held positions at prominent companies after graduation. For instance, recent graduate NATALIE CELLINI ’23 is now with BeeMarketing, a digital marketing agency where she transitioned from an intern to a full-time position. Harcum’s stellar Interior Design curriculum and the program’s expansive network and strong affiliations with the interior design industry have

consistently contributed to strong job placement for graduates over the past six years, with many finding roles in the industry. SHEILA HUDSON ’22 distinguished herself at Harcum College by maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout her academic journey. Recognized with the Academic Excellence Award at graduation for her accomplishments, she is currently an Interior Designer at CICADA Architecture/Planning, an architectural firm in Center City, Philadelphia. These are just a sample of examples that underscore the profound legacy and exciting future of Harcum’s Art & Design tradition, of which the newly built Art & Design Center will be a foundational part.

Bringing Art & Design Back to Campus

Currently, Harcum’s Art & Design courses take place one and a half miles from the main campus, at a distant remove from the heart of the College. However, by Fall 2024, once constructed, a newly built hub will sit prominently within the Bryn Mawr Campus, occupying the west wing of the soon-to-be renovated Pennswood Hall. This central positioning symbolizes more than just a relocation—it represents a significant return and reintegration of the arts into the very essence of Harcum’s education. This new Art & Design Center building, a testament to Harcum’s

THE ENTRANCE
PATCHES 13

dedication to creativity, heralds a vibrant future for the college’s design programs.

HEIDI TECHNER, the Interior Design Program Director, and DR. JULIAN CROOKS, the Fashion Programs Director, eagerly await the relocation of their programs to the new Center. “The move to the main campus is exciting! Our Art and Design curriculums emphasize creativity and innovation, and this new center is purpose-built to foster both,” says Techner. Dr. Crooks shares her enthusiasm: “This new center promises an invigorating future for our Fashion Programs.”

Studies show that a well-thought-out educational environment enhances student engagement and focus, which directly impacts academic outcomes. Techner, who participated in the center’s early design process, mentions that the upcoming facility, spanning more than 7,000 square feet, will feature a flexible learning environment, complete with adaptable furniture designed to support a variety of teaching and learning styles.

Dr. Crooks is equally optimistic about the new center. She describes it as “a nexus of theoretical and experiential learning. With advanced facilities and resources, students will be given a platform to experiment, innovate, and perfect their craft. The center will not merely be another academic building; it will be a representation of the fashion industry, paving the way for students to transition smoothly into their professional paths.”

Both directors emphasize the importance of the “Hub,” a unique area in the new Center welcoming students and faculty to relax, unwind, and socialize. This versatile space is also intended for discussions, lectures, presentations, and other activities that can foster a creative spark. The outdoor deck, meanwhile, offers exciting possibilities for fashion showcases, portfolio exhibitions, exclusive events, and immersive pop-ups that highlight the many talents of Harcum’s design students.

Dr. Crooks emphasized that the Center’s design aims to cultivate a collaborative ethos. The open spaces, community areas, and teamwork-oriented workstations are structured to naturally prompt students to interact, exchange ideas, and undertake group projects. This design will foster an environment where creativity thrives.

The Art & Design Center will not only be a haven for Harcum students but also a platform for the local community to delve into the world of art and design. Hosting events ranging from workshops and exhibitions to seminars and interactive sessions, the center will enable this community to engage and connect, forging networks that extend far beyond its physical borders.

Moving the design programs to the main campus aims to spark artistic creativity and collaboration, reflecting the historically prominent place of Art & Design in Harcum’s education. Accordingly, beyond its many planned amenities, the upcoming Art & Design Center stands as a beacon of Harcum’s commitment to the Arts, a place where limitless creativity flourishes.

Possibilities Start with You

Significant fundraising is essential to realize the vision of building the new Art & Design Center on the main campus. With a goal set at $1M – of which more than half has already been pledged, including a remarkable $500,000 anonymous donation – the Harcum community is well on its way to actualizing this dream. BROOKE WALKER, VP of Institutional Advancement, emphasizes the importance of the ongoing fundraising initiatives, stating, “Each donation, whether large or small, brings us closer to realizing this vision.” As fundraising efforts ramp up this fall and continue into spring 2024, the entire community is encouraged to participate in this transformative journey.

SHEILA HUDSON’S PATH TO SUCCESS

Facing an empty nest, with her only child soon leaving for college, Sheila Hudson, ’22 felt a yearning. A dedicated community volunteer, she wanted a career that would allow her to nurture a creativity she always had. An online search led her to Harcum’s Interior Design Program. Initially interested in taking a class or two, Hudson reached out to the program’s director, Heidi Techner. Following their conversation, Hudson decided to fully enroll.

At Harcum, Hudson didn’t just find courses that honed her creative skills; she found a community. Her diverse peers, ranging from fresh high school graduates to seasoned adults, exposed her to many perspectives, enriching her learning experience. The program, with its emphasis on critical feedback, prepared her for the professional world. When she presented her ideas to clients, she said she would recall the feedback sessions following each project at Harcum. These sessions prepared Hudson to navigate and translate clients’ comments into her designs.

One of Hudson's cherished memories was of Techner guiding students outdoors, urging them to observe, listen, and find inspiration from the world around them. Hudson attributes much of her holistic development to Techner’s calming and Zen-like approach. She fondly mentions that “Instructors were always available, helpful, and willing to put in extra time.”

Even as a student, Hudson’s commitment was evident. She volunteered for the Community Design Collaborative and secured a practicum with CICADA Architecture/Planning during her last semester at Harcum. This part-time position soon transformed into a unique role post-graduation as the sole interior designer at a firm that had never onboarded one before.

Today, Hudson works on a myriad of projects. She has worked on teams that have designed spaces at esteemed universities like Villanova, Widener, and Penn. These projects include a residence hall study room, a graduate student building, as well as sports and leadership offices. She also assisted with the design of an office space for the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) in North Philadelphia and has been involved in multi-family projects, including a new construction project of affordable apartments for seniors. Hudson's journey, from a curious explorer to a valued professional at a distinguished architectural firm, is a testament to both her relentless dedication and the nurturing environment at Harcum.

HARCUM'S VALUABLE EDUCATION

Classroom

Success by many metrics

Few indicators speak as loudly about an educational institution’s value as the success of its graduates. This success measure is not just dollars and cents but also life-changing opportunities, upward career trajectories, and tools to realize one’s potential and self-actualization. Taking all these metrics into account, Harcum graduates continue to reap a positive return on their investment in their education at the College.

Official statistics paint a compelling picture. Median starting salaries for the professions for which Harcum trains its students, sourced from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, are competitive across various disciplines. And while some students, especially from the General Studies and Allied Health Science programs, often aim to transfer to 4-year institutions or other specialized programs, the overarching trend remains positive and consistent.

Benchmarking success

Salaries, while important, are just one dimension of the returns on investment in a Harcum education. The College is committed to fostering holistic growth, including continued intellectual growth. Deborah Accurso, the Director of Career and Transfer Services, points to a December 2022/

January 2023 6-Month Recent Graduate Survey, which shows that over a third (35%) of graduates advanced to higher education, building on the skills and knowledge they gained at Harcum. Of the remaining 65% of respondents, an overwhelming majority (93%) found jobs in their study area within six months post-graduation.

The National Center for Education Statistics examined employment rates for 25–34-year-olds over the last decade. According to the center’s data, in 2022 individuals without a bachelor’s degree but some college experience had a 79% employment rate. Harcum College’s job placement rates meet and often surpass these national averages: 81% of Harcum students secured jobs shortly after graduation, according to a 2021 survey by the PA Department of Education.

This achievement is no accident; it reflects the College’s dedication to its students’ success. The Career & Transfer Services department plays a key role in helping students translate their newly acquired knowledge and skills into a successful path following their time at Harcum. The staff offers a range of services, from tailoring resumes and organizing job fairs to facilitating internships and advising on credit transfers to four-year institutions.

Ensuring post-graduation success

Integral to Career & Transfer Services’ success is close monitoring of relevant industry trends. Affiliations with esteemed bodies such as the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) provide access to crucial data forecasting hiring patterns, salary trends, and other essential indicators. Meanwhile, continuous feedback from industry partners ensures that Harcum students are not only entering the job market but are also equipped to meet its ever-evolving demands. Connecting students with internships, critical in today’s job market, is also part of Harcum’s focus. Through platforms like the College Central Network, an interactive online career network and recruiting platform for students and alumni, students find opportunities tailored to their disciplines, allowing them to gain hands-on experience even before they graduate.

The College also recognizes that the academic journey doesn’t necessarily end at graduation. The department also ensures smooth transitions for students eyeing higher academic degrees. An impressive 83% of students who leveraged Career & Transfer Services to pursue higher education following Harcum felt directly aided by it, as indicated by the Recent Graduate Survey. Harcum boasts articulation agreements with various prominent colleges, providing a seamless transition and junior status for students at partner institutions such as Bloomsburg University, LaSalle University, Moore College of Art & Design, Villanova University’s College of Professional Studies, and Wilmington University.

More than just a degree

Harcum College’s value proposition extends beyond the prized degrees it offers. It is a passport to opportunities, whether in the workforce, higher academic pursuits, or personal development. The data, while illuminating, tells only part of the story. Behind each statistic lies a student’s aspiration, ambition, and dream – all nurtured and brought to fruition by a college that believes in the power of its education.

Did you know?

According to a recent Gallup/Lumina study, the benefits of higher education are both short-term and long-term and accrue not just to individuals but to society as a whole. Many of these extensive benefits are often unnoticed and underappreciated. Most people readily will point out that higher education fuels innovation, promotes entrepreneurship, and boosts income. Indeed, those with an associate degree make 60% more than those without postsecondary education, and bachelor’s degree holders make 120% more. However, many overlook the connection between education and improvements in physical and mental health, community involvement, and democratic participation. Yet, the data is clear: those with higher education enjoy many benefits in these areas.

Here are some of the study's key findings:

Higher education leads to better health and well-being and increased life satisfaction. Educational attainment was positively associated with 50 out of 52 economic and noneconomic indicators, such as greater job satisfaction, confidence, and ability to face difficult challenges. These effects hold for all races and ethnicities. For instance, Black adults with more educational attainment participate more actively in the labor force.

Civic engagement is more pronounced in educated individuals. They volunteer more, vote more, participate more actively in community activities, and have higher rates of charitable giving than individuals without a postsecondary education.

Education fosters community ties. Educated individuals are more likely to trust and engage with their neighbors.

Men’s and Women’s Soccer Prepare for a Strong Season

The anticipation is palpable as the Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams gear up for an exciting season ahead under the expert leadership of Head Men and Women’s Soccer Coach David Hughes With their eyes on victory, both teams display their athletic skill on and off the field.

The Women’s Soccer team makes a triumphant return after a year hiatus. Coach Hughes is excited about their reunion: “We’re thrilled about the resurgence of the women’s soccer program. Over the past year, we’ve dedicated ourselves to building a powerful and competitive team, aiming for immediate success.” The Women’s team already started the regular season strong, clinching a 2–0 shutout victory over Southern MD.

Meanwhile, the Men’s Soccer team kicked off their pre-season with a spirited scrimmage on August 11th. The match pitted freshmen against sophomores, resulting in a tense battle that showcased the skill and determination of both sides. The sophomore team secured a 4–2 victory, setting the tone for a thrilling season ahead. Coach Hughes praised the team, remarking, “The recruitment for the Men’s program has shown promise. The performance in the Sophomore vs. Freshman scrimmage revealed the depth we have in our squad, a necessity for a strong post-season run. We aim to consistently compete at the pinnacle of NJCAA Division 1, and believe this team has the potential to earn a spot in the national tournament.”

NEW TEAMS JOINING FALL LINEUP

This season, Harcum is entering exciting territory by introducing two new teams. The addition of a JV Women’s Basketball team marks a milestone, reflecting Harcum’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and cultivating new athletic talent.

The newly appointed Women’s JV Basketball Head Coach, Marquise Lewis, expresses his excitement: “The new team provides an opportunity for prospective female athletes to join our athletic program, even if they aren’t yet ready

to compete at the collegiate varsity level. It also welcomes a diverse range of student-athletes from across the country, allowing them to become integral parts of our community.”

The growing popularity of basketball has prompted the introduction of a second JV Men’s Basketball team. The surge of interest in the sport is undeniable, and this new team is a direct response to that enthusiasm. College President Jon Jay DeTemple remarks, “I’m looking forward to adding another team, offering even more opportunities for those who admire Harcum basketball.”

Starting in Spring 2024, Harcum will also introduce a Men's Volleyball team to its athletic roster. Both newcomers and veteran athletes are gearing up to make their impact in the 2023-2024 season. The upcoming fall sports season promises to showcase excitement and athletic excellence.

Alumnae Interviews with First Lady Margi Tucker DeTemple

SALLY CROOK WILKINSON ’65 Major: Medical Secretary Technician

“My family history goes back to the early days of Bryn Mawr,” says Sally Crook

Wilkinson, a Harcum alumna whose family history intersects with the college’s early years. “My dad, the youngest of seven, was born in 1906 near the Bryn Mawr Fire Company on a cold February day. The ’oft told story is that ‘it was so cold they had to keep walking the doctor’s horse so that it would not freeze.’”

Wilkinson and her sister, Virginia (Ginnie) Crook, both graduated from Harcum, receiving the esteemed Harcum Award upon completion. “Ginnie, class of ’60, was a nursery school teaching major,” Wilkinson mentions. “I, class of ’65, was in the medical secretarial major and served as editor of the college newspaper.”

Wilkinson’s Harcum journey had a unique trajectory. “I transferred to Harcum mid-year, after spending only one semester at Grove City College, so I could be close by to help my mother, who was fighting cancer. I resided with my mom and dad at the Mermont Plaza on Montgomery Avenue, just one block away from Harcum. I walked along Montgomery Avenue to attend classes and completed requirements for graduation in just three semesters. Graduation ceremonies were held at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, where one of my aunt’s ashes are interred.”

Wilkinson’s yearbook, scrapbook, and photo album rekindle treasured moments, including her membership certificate to the Harcum Club, a snapshot with Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania Raymond P. Shafer, and keepsakes from events like the Little Sister and the Harcum Club banquets.

As a day student, Wilkinson found solace in her studies and in her partner, who later became her husband of 57 years. “I was very much focused on my studies and spending

time with my boyfriend, who was a student at Lafayette College,” she fondly recalls.

Wilkinson reflects on how much the college has transformed since she attended it: “Harcum is a changed place since its days as an all-women Junior College when classes were taught in various rooms of the old houses!”

MARY ANN SKELTON OAKS ’52 Major: Medical Secretarial Program

Born to a family in the Pennsylvania coal and oil business, with a father who once served as Commissioner of Lower Merion, alumna Mary Ann Skelton Oaks had strong ties to the region. After graduating from Lower Merion High School, Oaks embarked on a journey at Harcum College and, alongside fellow classmates Kathryna “Kay” Blum Barone, Barbara Cherksey ’52, and opera singer Jean McCrea, her time at Harcum was characterized by friendships and remarkable experiences.

Known as “Snookie,” Oak’s yearbook depicts her as cheery and well-liked. She was a member of the Athletic Association, playing sports like field hockey and basketball as part of Harcum’s Purple and White Teams.

While academics didn’t captivate her as much, Oaks’s heart belonged to her boyfriend Bill, whom she married shortly after college. Bill was a Lafayette College graduate, as were their three daughters, all pledged to Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Oaks earned an Associate’s degree in Medical Secretarial Studies. Her favorite teacher was Edna C. Tetlow. Juggling her role as a medical secretary in a doctor’s office, she flourished. Years later, she served on Harcum’s Board of Directors during the college’s transition to co-education, including during the introduction of the men’s basketball team.

SOLVE A PUZZLING DONATION!

A surprising addition to our archives has us scratching our heads. A postcard displaying the rear of Melville Hall has found its way to us, adorned with fountain pen annotations. The handwriting poses a formidable challenge as we attempt to match it with names in our yearbooks. The presence of the Little Theatre in the photo solidifies a post-1923 timeframe.

MICHELE TURNER ’12 and BRENDA PATE ’12, distinguished alumni of the Nursing program, have joined forces to co-author an illuminating book titled The Guide to Travel Nursing: How to Survive and Thrive. Drawing from their firsthand experiences in the field, the book provides invaluable insights and practical suggestions that guided them on their personal and professional journeys.

In a heartwarming gesture, ELLEN SHELLENBERGER ’44, a dedicated alumna, bestowed a generous donation upon the College. Her precious gift includes a cherished scrapbook and two yearbooks, delightful time capsules which vividly capture her experiences during her time at Harcum. These treasured items will find a home in the archival collection within the Trout Library, preserving the legacy and memories of her Harcum days for generations to come.

We’d love to know who the mentioned students are and the date of this item. We turn to you, our Harcum community, to be our detectives. Can your insights crack this mystery and unveil the identities and stories concealed within? Harmony & Empathy

KATHY ANTHONY has held the role of Director of Counseling Services for 15 years, but her contributions to the Harcum community extend far beyond it. Anthony readily stepped in as part-time director to cover vacancies in the Career & Transfer Services department until the positions were filled. She also served as an Academic Advisor for Student Support Services for several years.

Helping our students and employees navigate mental health and other issues is only one of her many skills. She inherited a love of singing from her late father and says it’s a gift and talent she doesn’t take lightly. “I like to use this gift to sing songs that speak to people in very meaningful ways,” says Anthony. She generously shares her remarkable voice with the Harcum community, faithfully and proudly singing the National Anthem and Alma Mater at Commencement since 2010.

She recalls the 2016 Physical Therapist Assistant Pinning Ceremony as her most memorable moment on campus. A student asked Anthony to pin her at the special graduation event. Anthony says, “It was an honor to be asked, and to know that the student felt the support she received from me was that impactful.”

Harcum students are not the only ones on whom Anthony has left a positive impression. Rick SanFilippo, Director of Campus Safety, says, “During my time with the College and working with Kathy as part of the Student Life

team, I have had the pleasure of collaborating with her on many occasions. I have always found Kathy to be very easy to work with, and she is very accommodating in meeting the needs of our students. If I had to use one word to describe her, it would be caring. She always has the best interests of our students at heart and makes herself available around the clock. Kathy never seems to have a bad day, either. She is rarely seen without her infectious smile, and she is always encouraging to those that she counsels, striving in every case to ensure a positive outcome. She is a great asset to the College and perfect for the role in which she serves the Harcum community.”
