It has emerged at a time where people all across the world are seeking the creativity and connection that Wolfed finds in the Fancy Pants Tower. In the twelve years I have worked with Nick Bland I can say that Wolfred is his best book yet, and we are so thrilled to bring his iconic style to Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing. We hope children across Australia will love this book as much as we do.’

A mesmerizing new story and instant classic from beloved children’s book author and illustrator, Nick Bland, Wolfred is a story of kindness and seeing the good triumphing over selfishness and greed. Combining fairytale tropes with a Grimm-esque fable, Bland has created a book that feels familiar and fresh, comforting and entirely relevant. Wolfred is told in gentle rhyme, with surprises on every page.

Below the Twiligh t Zone lies the Midnigh t Zone, which extends from 1,000 metres to 3,000 metres. The water there is very cold – just 4 degrees Celsius – and no light reaches it so no plants can grow. All inhabitants of the Midnight Zone are either scaveng ers (which means they eat things that are already dead) or predato rs. Even modern military submarines cannot enter the Midnigh t Zone – the water pressur e is just too great.

18

The Abyss lies below the Midnight Zone. It extends from 3,000 to 6,000 metres and its name means ‘bottomless’ in Greek. It is not the bottom of the ocean though, for deep-se a trenches extend even deeper. The Abyssal Zone makes up over 80 per cent of the ocean and covers 60 per cent of the Earth. Temperatures are just above zero degrees Celsius.

HYDROTHERMAL VENT

You might imagine that the Earth is one big, solid rock beneath your feet, motion less and unchanging. But the truth is that the Earth is made up of four main layers, each contain ing different minerals. Some of them are even moving! In the very middle is the dense core, followed by an outerco re, then the mantle – which is mostly made of molten rock – and finally the thin crust on top. The mantle is very hot, ranging from 4,000 degrees Celsius at its deepest point to 200 degrees Celsius where it meets the crust. The crust is what you are standing on right now, but there is also crust deep in the ocean. In the very middle of the ocean, oceanic crust is being torn apart and new crust is being formed . This is one of the most astonishing habitats. Here, hot rocks from the Earth’s mantle come

S

close to the ocean floor, and superhe ated sea water rich in minera ls escapes from cracks in rocks and flows into the sea. These are called hydrothermal vents, and are used by creatur es that are entirely independent of energy from the sun. These vents support lots of unusual life – the number of creatures around the vents is 10,000 to 100,000 times more than on the surroun ding ocean floor. Worms 2 metres long, great hosts of shrimps, and clams as long as your forearm dominate these ecosystems.

WHALE AND SHIP FA LLS

Dead whales and sunken ships make up another distinct habitat in the ocean deep. Whales that die and fall into the ocean deep are known as whale fall. They can feed entire ecosystems for decade s. In fact, some creatur es are only found on or around whale carcasses. Ships also sink, and there are about 3 million shipwrecks littering the ocean floor. It is estimat ed that a ship was lost at sea every days between 1971 two and 1990. Just like whales, they can support life in the Abyss. But the types of creatures living off a ship are differen t to those that live off dead whales.

The deepest parts of the ocean are the Trenches. They are long furrows found in all oceans, and the deepest is the Mariana Trench. The Challenger Deep, its deepest part, lies 10,927 metres below the surface .
