When we read books we pick up on patterns that authors use for their writing. We can use these patterns to help us become fantastic writers too! For this activity we are going to innovate on the book The Soccer Star. See if you can choose new words to fill in the gaps in this passage of text to make it your own. Get creative and see if you can use some interesting words. At the end, read the text out loud to make sure your new version makes sense. Original passage of text:
Draw a map of your school’s playground. Where do you and your friends play? Draw yourself on the map playing with your friends.

Today a boy from their grade runs over. His name is Sam. Sam stands under the monkey bars and looks up at Billie and Jack.
Your turn! First, choose the names of your characters. Then fill in the gaps to create your own story.

What is your favourite sport?
There are so many amazing sports to choose from, but soccer is by far the most popular around the world and in lots of places it’s called FOOTBALL. I decided to find out some more about soccer so I looked up some fun facts to share with you.
DID YOU KNOW? Fact #1 Soccer is a sport play ed between two teams of eleven player s. It is played by 250 MILLION PLAYER S in over 200 countries, making it th e world’s most popular sport. Amazin g!
Fact #2 No-one knows exactly when soccer was created, bu t some people believe a versio n of soccer was played in C hina over 2000 YEARS AGO. W ow! Fact #4
Fact #3
The first soccer balls were made from sewn-up clothing that was filled with little stones. Ouch! In Europe during the Middle Ages, soccer balls were made from inflated pig bladders. Ew!
Women started playing soccer around the same time as men did in England, but people used to think it was only a game for men. What? Luckily, women’s soccer started to become very popular in the 1990s.
SOCCER STARS: • Who has the most Olympic soccer wins? The US women’s soccer team! They have won four out of five possible gold medals. Go team! • The only player to ever score in three different world cups is David Beckham. David Beckham became famous when he played with Manchester United. Cool! • Brazilian soccer legend Pelé has the most World Cup Championships. He was on the teams that won the World Cup back in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He helped Brazil with three of their five World Cup championships. And he was voted the 20th century’s best soccer player. Awesome!
Fact #5
An international soccer game is 90 minutes long. The 90 minutes is divided in two 45-minute halves.
Hooray!
How to write a
GOOD STORY Hi there!
In the past t wo issues, Billie B Brown aut hor Sally Rippin shared her tip s on how to write the beginnin g and the middle o f a good sto ry. In the final par t of this thre e-part series, she of fers advice o n how to end a story. HURRAY!
How did you go with giving your character a BIG PROBLEM? Did you work out how to get them out of trouble again? Good! This is the simplest way to write a story:
2 3
1
You might even want to write your story like a comic. I did this a lot and it’s a great way to create stories if writing is a bit tricky for you. Even stick figure comics are fine! You can make lots of them really quickly that way, especially if you have lots of great ideas.
Invent a character.
Give them a BIG PROBLEM that they have to sort out.
Don’t make it too easy for them to fix the problem. Make them ory fail a few times to make the st aders more exciting. We want our re to keep turning the pages!

There are lots of things you might want to add to your story. You might want to illustrate it. You might want to turn it into a book. I used to make lots of books when I was young, just by folding up bits of paper. Usually I would make a fancy cover, too. Be careful, though – sometimes I would spend so much time on the cover that I wouldn’t feel like writing my story!
Find a solution to the problem.
Of course, if you w ant to be good at an ything, you know what you have to d o, don’t you? That’ s right. PRACTISE I’ve been practisin ! g writing stories fo r over forty years and some days it is still hard work. But I keep on trying. And you should, to o. GOOD LUCK!
