Sid is an introverted 12-year-old who wants to blend in. Otto is an opera-singing octopus who wants to stand out! So when Otto mistakenly ends up in Sid’s struggling family fish shop in the small town of Rone (instead of Rome), Sid’s already complicated life is turned completely upside down.

But when a TV talent show comes to town –where first prize is enough money to get Otto to Rome and Sid enrolled in the art school of his dreams – this unlikely duo decide that teaming up will give them the best chance of winning.

Can a shy, small-town kid and a pompous, attention-seeking octopus put aside their differences long enough? Or will it all end in a full-blown televised disaster?

Oc … octopus? Phew. What do you mean the ocean is three kilometreshundred in that direction? Why do you keepthat?!doing My apologies, I’m afraid it cannot be helped. I’m a master of disguise, you see. blend in. I wish could blend in. Doing what? Scaring me! AHHHH! HA HA HA HA HA HA! No silly questions, remember? If recall correctly, octopuses and other cephalopods do indeed talk … … in a way. They ‘talk’ using body language. They are highly intelligent and can recognise individual creatures, even humans. But be warned, if an octopus takes a dislike to you, they have been known to communicate that in no uncertain terms. Leave everything where it is, please. We’ll be continuing after the break. Does that answer your question? Sure. DING! DING!DING!

Karen Wasson’s manuscript, Inked, was the first ever graphic novel shortlisted for the Ampersand Prize. Her non-fiction picture book Drop into the Ocean will publish early 2024. Karen lives in Melbourne with her family of humans and one dog who thinks he’s a human.

Jake A Minton is an illustrator who lives near Byron Bay, Australia. His work has been shortlisted for the CBCA Awards and the Little Hare Illustration Prize.

Fish for … friends? For food. To eat. The fish are to eat … Yes. And the crabs and prawns, those are food too? Yes. Don’t you eat those things? do. There is one thing, however, I do not understand. And what’s that? Why was there? Ahem. believe we have a connection. felt it when we first met at your home this morning. That’s not my home. Fish … shop? Friendship? Fin-ship, perhaps? That’s our fish shop. People eat octopus … you are food. Well, now you MUST help me. What! Why? Because! If you refuse, I shall report you to the authorities for attempted murder! How will you report me? If you turned up at the police station, Sergeant Patel would have you seasoned and served up for lunch before you could speak! I’ll use the telephone. Ha. NOOOOO!

A riotously funny, spooky series about two kids whose surroundings keep trying to eat them. From the illustrator of the Last Kids on Earth, the ten-million copy bestselling series!

Maddie and Clare live in a quiet, palm treelined dead end, which they call Dead End, with their dad and pet chicken. It’s a place where not much happens, except for the odd small incident. Maria Petranelli is Prepared for Anything (Except This)

Grumpy/ sunshine YA romcom!

WINNER of the Ampersand Prize!

Arrested Development meets Elena Ferrante in this screwball comedy about how to prepare for the worst.

Maria Petranelli feels her height, or lack thereof, is a curse. It gives people the impression she is cute. And cute people are never taken seriously. So when her family declares she ‘couldn’t handle living in Italy’, she immediately signs up to go there on student exchange.

Yet Maria’s family is right. In Italy, she is out of her depth – by the language, the traffic and by her confusing attraction to Kennedy, the tall, sweet-but-hopeless American student who seems to like her back.

The two girls are thrown together in the most bizarre circumstances when they are witnesses to both a coincidence and a crime (a heart attack and a murder – not that either can tell the difference), and forced on a cat-andmouse chase across Italy to save their own lives. All the while battling feelings for each other that are, at the very least … inconvenient.

Maria Petranelli is prepared for anything. Except this.

5 4 The digestive system Next time you eat a delicious meal, thank your digestive system! It extracts essential nutrients from the food you eat and makes poo out of what’s left. The digestive system starts at the mouth and ends at your anus, or butthole! Many organs make up the digestive system, including the stomach, intestines, liver and gall bladder. The urinary system Our urinary system helps us pee! The urinary system includes the kidneys and is one way our body gets rid of any waste products. The immune system Our immune system is made up of organs and specialised cells that protect our body against disease-causing germs. It works closely with other organ systems, like the circulatory and digestive systems, so it knows where and what to attack. The skin Although our skin is only around 2 millimetres thick, about the thickness of a ruler, it covers our entire body and is our largest organ. Our skin plays a very important role, because it’s our body’s first layer of protection from the outside world. A quick tour of the human body Let’s get to know our bodies, so we get a good sense of how our body can be an attractive home for other life forms. Our body is like a machine with many parts that keep it working and alive. Some of these parts we can see, like our skin, hair and nails. We might also already be aware of our bones, which give our body structure, and our muscles, which help our body move. But inside our body, there are plenty more important parts! Here are some that you may already know a bit about: The heart and circulatory system Your body is full of red blood – the average grown-up has five whole litres of it. The circulatory system is our beating heart pumping this blood around our body nonstop using a network of blood highways called blood vessels. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients all over our body, and it also helps get rid of waste. The lungs and respiratory system The lungs are a pair of spongy pink organs that are connected to our nose and mouth through a network of airways. The respiratory system is how our body gets oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide. The brain and nervous system The brain kind of looks like the outer shell of a walnut. It has many pinkish-grey folds and creases and is separated into two halves known as hemispheres. The brain controls everything that happens in the body – often without us even having to think about it. The brain is part of the nervous system, a network of nerves that carry information to and from the brain. NOTCOPYRIGHTED FOR DISTRIBUTION 20 Friendly Fellows The Mighty Immune System In our gut Your gut isn’t just for tackling all that delicious food you eat – it’s also home to more immune cells than anywhere else in your body. Almost 80 per cent of our immune cells can be found in the lining of our intestines, and we are still figuring out how our gut microbes work with these cells. One thing we’ve learned is that our gut microbiome helps our immune system detect danger and guides it to attack with just the right amount of force. Our microbiome makes many useful substances for our bodies to keep us healthy, including ones we can’t make ourselves, such as anti-inflammatories and vitamins. Anti-inflammatories help our immune system get the right balance in its response to disease or injury. Vitamins are essential nutrients for our bodies, but they also influence our immune system. Our friendly microbes make the B vitamins and Vitamin K, which is important for our blood and bones. THE MIGHTY IMMUNE SYSTEM Our immune system keeps us healthy and stops us getting sick. It protects us from pathogens, or invading microbes that cause disease. It’s no wonder that the microbiome associated with our immune system contains some of our burliest security guards! In our nose and lungs The friendly microbes here are the gatekeepers to our airway health: they stop the growth of nasty invading microbes and help us fight infections. For the 900 kinds of microbes that live in our noses, our nostrils are a perfect home that’s a bit like a hairy jungle with mucus. Our microbiome can even influence how our body responds to drugs that treat cancer. When treating cancer, doctors prescribe drugs, but soon they may also give us a dose of specialised friendly microbes that are experts in helping us fight cancer! Our gut microbes don't just help the immune system fight invaders in our digestive system, they also help fight invaders in other parts of the body. BASICS 15 WHO ARE ‘PEOPLE OF COLOUR’? The term ‘people of colour’ (POC) refers to any person who isn’t considered White or from a European ethnic or cultural background. (There’s more to this, though – see What is Whiteness?, p20). We’ve chosen to use ‘people of colour’ because it feels fairly inclusive. However, we’re aware and acknowledge that the many groups within this umbrella term can experience racism very differently. Check out Allyship A to Z (p192) for other terms, such as BIPOC or QTPOC, which refer to more specific groups among people of colour. People of colour in Australia experience racism in all its different forms, from racial discrimination to structural racism. Because of this, they are not treated the same way as White people. Is it kind of racist to label people as ‘people of colour’, ‘Black’, or ‘White’? Unfortunately to dismantle racism, we need the words to call it out. So sure, race is a social construct like we’ve said, but simply labeling people is acknowledging that they are being treated differently. However, not all POCs want to be called a POC; e.g. an African Australian might prefer a more specific term, like Black. If you’re in doubt, ask the person. FREYA  Most people don’t believe I’m mixed [race]. Those who do always pick it up in a strangely racist way. Like, ‘Yeah, your nose is pretty flat. Not like a White person’s.’ Or, ‘Squinty eyes. That’s how knew you were Asian.’ SELF › NTERNALISED RACISM 41 LEARN MORE ABOUT ANTI-RACISM AMUOR Learn about different cultures. Try to experience as much diversity as you can. Make a conscious effort to learn and grow. Anti-racism is a journey; it doesn’t end. Make it a priority to follow and listen to people of colour – this keeps a pulse on what’s happening in the anti-racism space. Learning and understanding the history of racism and anti-racism is crucial too. In doing so, you’ll educate yourself on the complexities of the issues you’ll face as an anti-racist. The SOCIETY chapter (see p111) can act as a starting point. Access a list of resources on our website for some suggestions.

It’s easy to argue that the human brain is the most extraordinary thing in the known universe. But there is so much we don’t know about the thing behind our eyes. Where do thoughts come from? Why do we dream? Why do we get brain freeze? Why?! Okay, that last one we do know the answer to.

But there is much to learn – and much fun to be had – by taking a quick poke around the human brain (which would feel a bit like tofu, if you did poke it). Told with Philip Bunting’s inimitable wit, this new non-fiction picture book will explore the most fascinating part of the human body – the bit that makes you YOU, your brain.

Or aliens visiting from another planet? No, they’re jellyfish! It’s safe to say there is nothing boring about jellyfish they are some of the most bizarre creatures around. Looking at them, you may not think much of them, but as a group they hold some astonishing world records! There are more than 2,000 kinds of jellyfish, and they come in all different shapes, sizes and colours. Some have very interesting names, like the Santa’s hat jelly, the blue blubber, the psychedelic jelly, the flying saucer jellyfish, the pink meanie, the upside-down jellyfish and the purple people eater! With their beautiful colours and ability to glow in the dark, jellyfish can be pretty to look at but remember not to touch them. One thing all jellyfish can do is sting! Although most jellyfish are harmless, one type of jellyfish has the most powerful venom in the world. Jellyfishhave been on this p lan t on e t han a m t any o ther creaturefor more than 500 M LLION YEARS Some are even IMMORTAL Have you ever been to the beach or a river and seen groups of jellyfish floating everywhere? We call that a jellyfish bloom With climate change, we may see more and bigger blooms because jellyfish are some of the only creatures that will thrive as our planet becomes warmer. 3
NEW SERIES!
Some kinds of jellyfish have tiny algae friends. They have a symbiotic relationship where both parties benefit: the algae have home in the jellyfish’s body and, in return, the jellyfish is rewarded with the energy that algae convert from sunlight. There are even jellyfish that get so much energy from their algae friends that they hardly need to hunt for food! FRIENDS OR FOES? Jellyfish play a vital role in their environment: in the ocean food chain and in providing shelter and transport for other creatures. Jellyfish are predators and prey in the ocean food chain They have diverse diet, which includes tiny plankton, small crustaceans (such as shrimp) and fish. Some jellyfish even think other jellyfish are delicious! A jellyfish can also be a slow bus for little critters, like small crabs, barnacles, worms and even sea stars. They float along on the jellyfish, and don’t have to put any energy into moving themselves. Some hitchhiking critters get more than just a free ride – they might steal bits of the jellyfish’s food for themselves, too. Although stinging cells are a strong defence against predators, jellyfish still get eaten by many animals. A jellyfish doesn’t look too tasty to me, but there are animals that just love a jellyfish meal. Top jellyfish eaters are the leatherback turtle and the oddly shaped sunfish – they eat hundreds of jellyfish every day! Whale sharks, other fish, crustaceans (like crabs and prawns), anemones and some seabirds and penguins also hunt jellyfish. Some kinds of jellyfish are friendly and offer shelter to small, young fish. The best types of jellyfish for small fish to hide away in are those with many nooks and ruffles. the little fish still to be careful around the stinging cells! Some kinds of crabs, such as carrier crabs, use jellyfish to keep them hidden or safe too! They use their little legs to hold a jellyfish bell in place over them like a suit of armour! Jellyfish are mostly water, so they’re not very nutritious. Some animals don’t bother eating the entire jellyfish – they only go for the more nutritious body parts, like the reproductive organs. 18 19

Tim Flannery and Emma Flannery

Professor Tim Flannery is one of the world’s leading scientists, explorers and conservationists. He’s spent most of his life studying the natural world – from mammalogy to palaeontology – and has had some incredible adventures along the way, including floating down crocodile-infested rivers and wrestling pythons. He’s discovered 75 new species of animals – some that are still living, and others that have been preserved as fossils. He’s worked at museums and universities in Australia and around the world, including as Director of the South Australian Museum, Visiting Chair in Australian Studies at Harvard University and Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Australian Museum. He established and co-chaired the Copenhagen Climate Council, was appointed Australia’s first Climate Commissioner and is the Founder and Chief Councillor of the Australian Climate Council. In 2007, he was named Australian of the Year. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed scientific papers and more than thirty books.

Emma Flannery is a scientist and writer whose curiosity for the natural world has seen her travel and work in some of its most wild and interesting places. She has explored caves, forests and oceans across most of the globe’s continents in search of the elusive fossils, animals and plants that help us understand our planet and who we are in it. With postgraduate experience in geology, chemistry and palaeontology, Emma’s research and writing has been published in scientific journals, children’s books and a number of museum-based adult education tours. She has worked for and with universities, government agencies and museums.
