Packed with honest advice on managing Aunt Flo like a boss, Welcome to Your Period will induct pre-teens into the secret society of menstruation: from demystifying what cramps feel like, to whether you can feel it coming out, to what you should do if your pad leaks onto your dress. Alongside Yumi’s warm, big-sisterish wisdom and Dr Kang’s medical nous, there will also be tons of case studies, first-person accounts and questions from real teens. It’s the must-have book for every pre-teen (9-12 years) that is guaranteed to make you feel special about getting your period.

Author Details Yumi Stynes is a second-gen Japanese-Australian TV and radio presenter who’s worked in media for almost two decades. She’s currently the host of Ladies, We Need to Talk, an award-winning podcast that explores all the trickiest topics and taboos about women’s health, including periods, difficult motherhood, and whether or not your vagina is weird. Most people know Dr Melissa Kang as the expert behind the long-running Dolly Doctor column (more than two decades), but she’s also a practising medical doctor with marginalised young people in western Sydney and an academic at the University of Technology Sydney. She specialises in adolescent sexuality and sexual health and continues to write and publish regularly on these topics in the mainstream media. She and Yumi met during the research and recording of Ladies, We Need to Talk.

Start here

You probably just want to get to the stuff that you need to know right now. If you’re starting from scratch and want to know what a period even IS, go to THE BASICS on page 4. If you want to know the difference between pads and tampons (and how to use them), go to page 42. And if you’re interested in what’s happening behind the scenes in your body, check out page 122 and 148. There’s also a vocab section on page 154 in case you need a refresher! Over the next few years, the things you want to know will change. That’s OK – this book will still be here when you need it. Pages you didn’t think you needed to read will

How do you use this book? Short answer – any way you like! Let’s start by saying that it is totally OK to be excited or scared or nervous about getting your period. Of COURSE. It’s all new, right? But no matter what your situation, this book will give you the info you need to handle your period like a boss. There’s a lot in here, and you don’t need to get your head

around every bit of it right away. You can read this book cover to cover or dip in to find the most interesting bits.

e m o l e W TO YOUR Period

Hi!

So glad you’re here. WELCOME to your period! Listen, I want to tell you something ( this is Yumi speaking). When I was a kid, it was tricky finding honest info about periods. But the one place you could go was a column in Dolly (a magazine for teenagers) called Dolly Doctor. Dolly Doctor was a regular Q&A with a real doctor who specialised in girl problems. You could write in to ask her advice, and she never laughed at the questions, or made fun of you, or even flinched – no matter WHAT you asked. Best of all, her answers were spot-on 100 per cent of the time! If you had told me that one day I would be co-writing a book with Dolly Doctor about periods, I would have screamed with disbelief and happiness!

I’M WORRIED IT WILL NEVER COME

The short answer is: not for a while. If your period is still a no-show, you don’t need to start thinking about talking to a doctor until you’re 15 or 16 years old – and even then things are likely to be fine. In the meantime, don’t stress!

You might be feeling as though ALL your friends have their period, and yours will never turn up. Or maybe you’re keen to be first! But if your period hasn’t arrived yet, when should you start getting worried?

14

WelcomePeriod_INTERNALS_v15.indd 14-15

It might help put your mind at ease to ask your mum, sister, cousins, aunties or grandma about when they first got their periods.

EVERY BODY IS DIFFERENT.

My daughter got hers at 12 years old. At her school you have to go to the toilet in pairs, so she was with a friend. She sat down on the loo and saw a little bit of blood on her undies, and shouted out, ‘I think I got my period!’ Her friend went, ‘Right, I’ll go get supplies.’ She went to her bag, gathered up a few other friends and they all grabbed their period stashes and came back and gave her the options.

Challenges

If you’re not up to tampons yet, that’s OK. No-one can force you to use them. We have heard of a few instances of teachers insisting you should use a tampon and take the swimming lesson and, frankly, that’s not on. Involve a carer or parent if you need backup.

Swimming days

If you’re worried about pushback from teachers, the first step is to ask your parent or carer to write a note for you to explain the situation. Here’s a template:

If you can wear a tampon or a menstrual cup, you can go swimming without having to

worry about blood. Just change your tampon before you get into the pool (or when you change into your swimmers) and you’ll be fine. See page 46 for info on how to use a tampon or page 54 for how to use a menstrual cup. Ordinary sanitary pads are no good for swimming as they will absorb water instead of blood. Water can also stop the adhesive glue on pads from working.

I remember thinking, ‘This doesn’t actually feel right.’ It got all waterlogged and heavy – actually, it felt like one of those massive turds in your undies! NOT GOOD AT ALL.

Allergic Alpaca Kiah Thomas Brecon, Connah

The start of the alphabet is a wonderful place to live... unless you’re allergic to apples. After an accidental tumble through the alphabet, Alpaca must find her way back home to her friends, Ape, Alligator, Albatross, Anteater and Aardvark. But the longer Alpaca is away from home, the better she feels — she spots disappear, her nose stops running and she has a clear head for the first time ever. Perhaps the start of the alphabet, with all its apples, isn't the best place for an alpaca after all. Shining new talent Kiah Thomas teams up with the inimitable Connah Brecon to bring the alphabet alive in this laugh-out-loud story with a wonderful surprise ending. Publication

INTRODUCING YOUR NEW FAVOURITE DUO

KIAH & CONNAH!

Kiah Thomas started telling stories when she was a kid; reimagining the endings in books she read. She rediscovered her love of kids books when she had children of her own, and started writing beginnings as well as endings. Kiah is passionate about books that kids and adults can enjoy together. She lives on the south coast of NSW with her husband, two children and at least seven stuffed toy penguins.

Connah Brecon, originally from the UK, is an author-illustrator based in Victoria, Australia, where he lives with his wife and daughter and cat and plants. Connah has written and illustrated six picture books, and illustrated many more stories written by Australian authors. While it is true that dogs like books, Connah illustrates books mostly for people, some of whom happen to be temporarily short. If he wasn’t illustrating children’s books, Connah would like to trade places with David Attenborough, although he would prefer a younger David if at all possible.

She turned to look behind her, and that’s when it happened.

Great, thought Alpaca. ‘AAAAHHHHCHHHOOOOOO!’ she said. ‘Bless you,’ said Walrus.

Alpaca landed in W with a thud. An apple hit the ground beside her.

Alpaca glared at the apple. Then sent it flying across the page.

Alpaca tried climbing back up the page, but it was no use. The edge was much too slippery.

How was she going to get back home? Zebra had visited once, arriving on the strange line across the top of the page. A zip-line, he had called it. It wasn’t far to Z. Perhaps she could try that.

The Brilliant Ideas of Lily Green Lisa Siberry

A dash of Judy Blume, a spoonful of secrets and a whole lot of fun get mixed up in this big-hearted debut by Ampersand Prize-winning author Lisa Siberry. Twelve-year-old Lily Green’s life is falling apart. Her best friend, Violet, is more interested in the latest shade of lip gloss than hanging out. Her enemy, Zoe, is determined to beat Lily in the school science competition – and win Violet’s friendship, too. When Lily accidentally mixes up a string of wild and wonderful beauty products from the mysterious plants in her neighbour’s garden, she thinks she’s found the perfect way to save the salon – and get her best friend back. But are her inventions as beautiful as she thinks? And when things start turning … ugly … can Lily find the real ‘secret ingredient’ that will save the salon, seal her friendships, and win the school science competition? Beautifully written and full of warmth, this captivating middle-grade novel explores family, friendship and the true meaning of beauty.

Author Details Lisa Siberry is a freelance writer and content producer who spent many years working at the ABC. She lives in Sydney with her husband and two children. Her debut middle-grade novel, The Brilliant Ideas of Lily Green, won the 2017 Ampersand Prize, the premier award for debut authors in Australia and New Zealand. Like Lily Green, she made lots of things when she was a kid, including a very dreadful squashed-jasmine-flower perfume.

Key Information Winner of the Ampersand Prize, the premier award for debut authors in Australia and New Zealand. Written in the vein of Judy Blume's enduringly popular books and Cathy Cassidy's much-loved novels. • A warm, light-hearted yet in-depth story about changing friendships, being true to yourself and learning from your mistakes. The novel touches on big issues such as grief and selling the family home, yet author Lisa Siberry's gentle tone and light touch ensure these themes never weigh the story down. • This immediately engaging, contemporary story has an enticing hint of magic and wonder to it, and will especially appeal to girls aged 8 and up. • •

Our shack had a dirt floor, and before I swept it I would sprinkle water on it so the dust didn’t fly everywhere. Then Mum would put an old piece of lino down. I thought it looked lovely! When Elaine Russell was five, her dad built the family a shack just outside the Aboriginal mission at La Perouse in Sydney. In The Shack that Dad Built, Elaine illustrates what life was like for an indigenous kid on the urban fringes. Her recollections range from the happy memories of hide-and-seek in the sand dunes and hunting for bush tucker to more bittersweet memories, such as her “Saddest Christmas Ever” (when the charity responsible for distributing presents to the local Aboriginal kids ran out of toys just as Elaine reached the head of the queue). Elaine’s colourful, painterly illustrations vividly recreate these childhood experiences.

Bertie wants to drive trucks and diggers, just like his daddy. But today there’s a special surprise waiting for him at school that might just mean that Bertie’s day and Daddy’s day won’t be so different . . . A heart-warming story about a very special bond. Publication

This colourful, magical book is perfect for young unicorn fans. A unique twist on the idea of setting up your own club. Themes of arts, crafts and games to interest children who like drawing, glitter and prizes. A hilarious story from the laugh-out-loud author of Octopants, Suzy Senior, and quirky new illustration talent, Leire Martín.

Saturday morning felt full of excitement. Saturday morning was sure to be great. Amy was starting a unicorn fan club, The poster was ready and pinned on the gate.

is today in the tree house. Everyone welcome! At 20 past 10. Crafts and a snack and just 10p admission. it said, in big letters, in shiny pink pen.

Amy was waiting,

Her Unicorn Club was a total disaster!

she hopped round the garden.

She finished her cookie and tried not to cry.

She nibbled a cookie and leaned on the gate. No one was coming! The whole street was empty. Her friends had forgotten – or else they were late.

She pulled down the sign and went round to the tree house . . .

.

b le d . . . b o w ich . h . . W a n d . d e creak . and then someone said,

“HI!”

A pink hairy face filled the tree house’s window. A big silver bottom poked out of the door. A tail swished impatiently over the railing. A clatter of hooves seemed to rattle the floor.

“At LAST!” cried a voice. “We’ve been waiting for AGES!” “When do the crafts start? I’ve brought my 10p!” “UNICORNS? Really?” gasped Amy, astounded. “Of course,” they all laughed. “Well, what else would we be?”

The smallest squeezed out and he slid down the ladder. His glorious horn sparkled bright in the sun. “I’m Legend,” he whinnied and nuzzled her elbow. “I reckon your Unicorn Club will be fun!”

So Amy thought fast: “You’re too big for the tree house.” She ran to the garage and beckoned them in.

A magical picture book from an award-winning illustrator from Bologna. There is a new market for long-format picture books - The Fox and the Star (Aug 2015, Particular Books) sold over 50,000 copies and was Waterstones Book of the Year. Marina Aromshtam is an award-winning Russian writer and teacher, and was shortlisted for the Leo Tolstoy prize in 2012.

“Real boats sail on the ocean. I want to sail there too, just like a real boat!” thought the paper boat, and he called out, “So long! I’m going to the ocean.”

A little stream trickled out of the pond and the paper boat sailed along it, with the frogs behind him.

“Croak-croak! We’re boats, too. We’re going to the ocean.” But before long, the frogs got tired, and the paper boat sailed on alone.

The stream got wider and wider. “Wow! There’s so much water!” marvelled the paper boat. “Now that must be the ocean!” But he didn’t want to be wrong. There was a rowboat near the riverbank and the paper boat bobbed alongside. “Could you be so kind as to tell me . . .” he began.

“Shhh! Don’t be so noisy!” grumbled the old rowboat. “You’re quite lively, aren’t you? You’ll scare away all the fish!” “Could you be so kind as to tell me where the ocean is?” said the paper boat, trying to whisper. “Ocean? Never heard of it. Go

away! I won’t catch any fish

with you shouting like that.”

“What a grump!” thought the paper boat, and he went on his way.

A

fter a while, the stream joined another stream and became a river.

The banks were even further away now. A motorboat roared past. “Tell me, please, how can I get to the ocean? called out the paper boat. But the motorboat was already gone.

Soon, a riverboat came around the bend. The paper boat thought it was just lovely – how delightful it would be to sail along with music playing!

Patrick Guest was raised in the Melbourne beachside suburb of Seaford. Even as a child, Patrick was writing stories, starring in his own Powerful Patrick series: a major hit with his Mum, Dad and rabbit Snowball. A desire to be Michael J Fox took Patrick down the corporate path. After gaining a commerce degree at Melbourne University, followed by a three-year stint with a big mining company, Patrick realised that he was possibly the world’s worst accountant. A dramatic change saw Patrick go back to study physiotherapy, and in 2000 he landed his dream job at the Sydney Olympics. It wasn't until his first son Noah was born, followed by Reuben and Grace, that Patrick started writing professionally. Since then he's had two picture books published -- That's What Wings are For and The Ricker Racker Club -- with several more in the pipeline.

Jonathan Bentley is one of Australia’s most treasured illustrators, and is fast becoming an international favourite. He has worked with some of the best Australian authors, including Margaret Wild and Andrew Daddo, and has recently branched out into writing his own stories. His solo book, Where is Bear?, was a runaway success and sold into 16 territories in its first year. Several of his other picture books have earned prestigious CBCA recognition, including A House of Her Own, And Red Galoshes and Pink.

The life inside your body is tricky to see, but you can feel it. Life lets you run and laugh and play – like how the wind helps kites to fly across the sky and leaves to dance across the ground. But where does the wind go when it stops blowing? And where does life go when it leaves the body?

Trainees say: “Pick me!”

Unlike the UK and US business models where managers and record companies put together bands because they look nice and can hold a tune, in Korea wannabe pop stars typically audition for special companies (SM, JYP, YG etc) that train them for years on how to sing and dance and basically become flawless entertainers. Only the very best will launch as idols.

VLIVE YOUR BEST LIFE

If you’re not using VLi ve you’re not a K-Pop fan. It’s THE place to go for live video content, a bit like Live.ly for Korean stars. You can watch everything from behindthe-scenes footage to intimate chats and performances. You can even pay for extra content.

T

he first time you experience K-Pop it seems a lot, like A LOT, but when you snap back to reality, everything is drab by comparison: slow, predictable and BORING. The pop music coming out of the South Korean capital, Seoul, is a juggernaut of exuberance – once heard, never forgotten. It devours references from everywhere, feeding them into the K-Pop meglo-machine – until something astonishing emerges, shining like the future. That in a nutshell is BTS, TWICE and EXO and all the bands that cannot be contained by lowercase letters.

GENERATION NATION

K-Pop is roughly split into three, four or five generations depending on how pedantic you are.

● The first generation kick-started with Seo Taiji and Boys in 1992, gathering momentum, but staying relatively confined to Korea with the likes of H.O.T and S.E.S. ● The second generation artists like Girls’ Generation, Super Junior and Big Bang went mainstreampop and started to have massive hits all over Asia in the mid noughties. This was the beginning of the ‘Hallyu Wave’. ● The third generation came around 2010 with idol groups 2NE1, SHINee, SISTAR and Psy. ● The fourth generation probably emerged around 2015 where slick artists like EXO, BLACKPINK, TWICE, Red Velvet and of course BTS started killing it globally. Jennie BLACKPINK represents the **This is not science, people 4th generation of K-Pop, (or is it the 5th? Or the 3rd?) – it’s just a fun debate**

In most countries, record labels run the music industry. In South Korea it’s a whole other ballgame – y’know, like Quidditch except with billions of dollars. Monolithic companies (SM, JM, Cube, JYP, Big Hit) exist to train kids and turn them into sta rs, a bit like the old studio system in Hollywood, except way tougher – Lassie had it easy.

Dance routines

British boybands and girlbands have tended to scrape by on charisma. They might’ve bopped about or had a few ‘routines’ but jaw-drop ping dancers like Kai EXO, Jimin BTS or Momo TWICE have the skills of Maddie Ziegler, and it’s ONLY one part of what they do. JLS were good though – those guy s could move.

Happiness TM

K-Pop sells pure joy. The songs are bright and exciting, the M/Vs are a feast for the senses and the talent, ambition and commitment makes us gasp.

The names of groups and idols are a cocktail of capital letters. Sometimes it’s a full word like WINNER, an acronym like BTS, or a single letter like HyunA. Capital letters are powerful and strong with all their sharp edges and shouty attitude, plus this stylistic choice makes the words easier to read.

Pop stars like Justin Bieber seem to do what they want and remain popular but idols are expected to be perfect on and off stage. When HyunA revealed she’d been dating PENTAGON member E’Dawn in 2018, they were both ‘let go’. These exacting standards highlight a darker side to K-Pop that Western fans must wrestle with.

Japan

The biggest early adopter and continuing supporter of K-Pop is Japan. It’s got to be such big business that idol groups regularly record entire albums in Japanese. And it’s no wonder the Japanese love K-Pop; it takes plenty of inspiration from Japanese culture.

7

They wear make-up, have hair like candy floss and aren’t afraid to express their emotions: welcome to the world of male idols. These boys could have come straight from Lisa Simpson’s In M/Vs like beloved Idol, BTS challenge Unthreatening norms of Boys magazine, masculinity and that’s part of with glee their appeal – they’re polite, pretty and totally relatable.

Korean wave

Hallyu is not the catchphrase of Shangela from RuPaul’s Drag Race, it’s the Korean Wave. That is, the spreading of Korean culture to the world. K-Pop is a massive part of that, peaking with Psy’s recordbreaking Gangnam Style and skyrocketing with BTS.
