September Briefing 2019
The Land of Roar Jenny McLachlan
The new middle-grade fantasy that will make you believe in magic! When Arthur and Rose were little, they were heroes in the Land of Roar, an imaginary world that they found by climbing through the folding bed in their grandad’s attic. Roar was filled with things they loved – dragons, mermaids, ninja wizards and adventure – as well as things that scared them (including a very creepy scarecrow. . .). Now the twins are eleven, Roar is just a memory, but when they help Grandad clean out the attic Arthur is horrified as Grandad is pulled into the folding bed and vanishes. Is he playing a joke? Or is Roar . . . real? The Land of Roar is reminiscent of Peter Pan, The Neverending Story and Jumanji – perfect for readers of Nevermoor and Wizards of Once.

Davina Bell
When lifelong friends Lola, Belle, Maisie and Sophia reunite at their beloved Corner Park Clubhouse for the winter school holidays, Lola has a great idea: they'll enter the local drama competition! It's the perfect way to spend as much time together as possible, and there are prizes for best actor, director and sets. As an artist, Lola’s determined her sets will win – but there’s just one problem. She can’t figure out what to paint, or even how to get started. And that’s because of something that happened at her super sophisticated art school last term – something Lola can’t discuss with anyone. Not her bestie, Belle, who’s brought her new friend Matilda home for the holidays. Not Maisie, who’s always busy with gym. Not Sophia, who’s focused on her secret crush. And not even her cool older sister, Tally, who’s at a conference in New York. With no-one to turn to but herself, can Lola figure out how to get her creativity back – before it’s too late?

Combining humour and heart, this series fills a gap in the market for warm, fresh, contemporary series fiction for upper primary/lower secondary aged readers. The perfect bridge between junior fiction and young adult novels. In the tradition of Ann M. Martin's iconic Baby-Sitters Club series – the 90s publishing phenomenon guaranteed to induce nostalgia in the book-buying parents of today – each book is told from the first-person point of view of a different character, making the books covetable and collectible. At the heart of this series is a celebration of friendship, independence and growing up. Much like The Baby-Sitters Club, feminism and entrepreneurship underpins the series, but with a lightness of touch.

Must-have picture book for young mermaid enthusiasts and inquisitive minds. Exquisite artwork that will have both adults and children mesmerised. Luxe gold foil cover with spot UV. Fascinating 'facts' presented in an engaging way. Dip in and out of the pages, or read in one sitting.
Tales from every corner of the world tell of mermaids enchanting unwary sailors with their beautiful song, calling up storms and causing shipwrecks – but these stories are the result of superstition and misunderstanding. Mermaids are our closest relatives, and they live and eat and sleep and play and raise their young together, just like we do. You might be surprised as you read this book to find out how similar we are.

In storybooks, mermaids have glittering scales, like a fish. In real life, they have smooth, sleek tails. The lacy patterns on a mermaid’s tail often look like scales, though, especially when seen underwater. These markings help a mermaid to blend into her surroundings. Like dolphins, whales and dugongs, most mermaids have tails that end in horizontal flukes. Forked twin tails were once common but are now extremely rare.
For the same reason, mermaids’ tails are usually silver, grey, green or blue. Vivid, jewel-like reds, pinks, purples and oranges are seen only in warmer waters, where tropical fish dart about against a background of brightly coloured corals.
When they swim, mermaids move their tails up and down – not from side to side, as fish do.
Mermaids_BeneathTheSurface_INT.indd 10-11
3/4/19 3:53 pm
Mermaids’ hair is usually black, brown, red, yellow or green, like seaweed. Some have fine, straight, silky hair that billows around them in the water like a cloud. Others have springy, spiralling tendrils or thick, rope-like locks. Mermaids love to groom one another, and spend hours every day twisting, teasing and braiding each other’s hair as they bask in the sun. Elaborate hairstyles are worn to celebrate special occasions. It is a point of pride among mermaids to invent new and more intricate styles every time.

INIDICATIVE IMAGERY
Friendships can be damaged by a mean or ugly word,
Once it has been spoken, it cannot be unheard.
Words of encouragement, sweetness, warmth and care
Blossom, grow and flourish As they spread love everywhere.
If we leave friends abandoned, sad and on their own, Soon the crack will widen
and we’ll be left alone.
Sharing things with others, making a new friend, May begin a journey
we hope will never end.
It’s so hard to be friendly when all we feel is sad.
Sometimes we are thoughtless, and make other folk feel bad.
But a kindly thought or action can make somebody’s day.
If we keep our friends close by, we won’t drive them away.

Communal Living
CAN YOU FIND? Wasps often blend in with swarms of bees so they can sneak into the hive and raid it. Can you spot two wasps hiding in this hive?
Often, many species of the same bug will live together in large groups, known as colonies. These bugs, which include termites, bees, wasps and ants, live very organised lives, working together to produce food, care for their young and protect each other against predators.
Older worker bees, called foragers, visit flowers to collect nectar, which they suck up through their long tongues.
Honey bees live in colonies containing up to tens of thousands of individuals. Different bees have different jobs to do.
Female bees create wax from their wax glands, which they use to build the nest. The nest is full of little pockets called cells. Male bees become drones, whose sole purpose is to mate with a queen. They die shortly after mating. The young, or larvae, are raised in cells known as brood chambers. When the larvae are fully grown, they spin cocoons for themselves.
Females become worker bees. The youngest, known as nurse bees, feed bee bread (a mixture of pollen and honey) to the larvae.
When a bee visits a flower, pollen sticks to hairs on its body. It brushes the pollen into pouches on its back legs, called pollen baskets.
The queen bee gives off chemicals, called pheromones, which control the other bees, and ensure she is the only bee in the colony to lay eggs.
Pollen is mainly used to feed to the larvae, while nectar is turned into honey, the bees’ winter food.
MASTERS OF SURVIVAL
scary eyes When startled, the elephant hawk-moth caterpillar puffs out its body, making its eyespots look like snake eyes. This fools predators into thinking they are looking at a much scarier creature.
CAN YOU FIND? These bugs are masters of disguise. Where are they hiding? Look for: Orchid mantis – looks like a flower Chan’s megastick – looks like a stick Giant leaf katydid – looks like a leaf
The bright, contrasting eyespots of a peacock butterfly can startle birds and give the butterfly more time to escape.
Toxic warning The striking red and black colours on a ladybird warn predators that it can release a stinky and foul-tasting chemical if attacked.
LET’S PRETEND To avoid being eaten, click beetles lie on their backs and pretend to be dead. They can quickly escape by flexing a hinge in their body which hurls them up into the air, producing a loud clicking sound.

The ladybird mimic spider has cunningly evolved a similar colour pattern to ladybirds. This keeps predators away – even though these bugs aren’t foul tasting at all!
POISONOUS BRISTLES Some caterpillars, such as the stinging rose caterpillar, are covered in stinging hairs. These act as a defence against birds and predatory insects.
STRANGE HATS When a gum leaf skeletoniser caterpillar moults its skin, it keeps the casing that once covered its head. With each moult, the stack of empty head cases grows until it forms a tower, which it uses to fight off predators like stink bugs.
kb
Bugs sit towards the bottom of the food chain, so there are lots of animals that want to eat them! This means they have had to develop clever ways of avoiding predators, such as playing dead or mimicking their surroundings. Some bugs are so good at camouflage, they’re almost impossible to spot . . .

The sun is roughly 13,600,000 degrees Celsius! That’s HOT!
You’re making a mons trous mess . In 1969, Apollo 11 was the first manned space rocket to land on the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first astronaut to walk on the moon’s surface.
The sun is a big star found at the centre of our solar system. Eight planets, including the earth, circle around it. The sun is 92.96 million miles away from our planet, which is the perfect distance to keep us alive; we never get too hot, or too cold. It is also VERY BIG, nearly 110 times wider than the earth!
Just as the earth circles around the sun, so the moon orbits the earth. The moon is around 238,857 miles away from our planet and has lots of craters and mountains. The moon might look round to the naked eye but it’s actually egg-shaped. We see the widest face, which points towards the earth.

It’s believed that friendly, domesticated dogs are descended from a ferocious species of prehistoric wolf. This could account for their incredible hearing (which is four times better than a human’s) and fantastic sense of smell. A dog’s whiskers are so sensitive that they feel vibrations in the air, which warns the dog of any threat.
Cats were first domesticated in ancient Egypt from a species of wild cat. Lions, tigers and leopards are part of the cat family and are referred to as ‘big cats’. Lions live in families (or ‘prides’) of around 15 members. They are intelligent pack hunters and their ROAR is nearly 25 times louder than an industrial lawn mower!

Protecting Yourself with Primes The forests of the Eastern – United States are the stage for a most remarkable journey. For 13 long years winged insects called cicadas patiently live underground, even though they are fully grown after just eight. Then, suddenly, they all burst out of the earth together to feast on the surrounding trees, mate and lay their eggs. Within weeks the baby cicadas burrow back underground where they spend the next thirteen years growing and waiting their turn.
Why are they so patient? It's all to do with prime numbers. A PRIME NUMBER is one that can only be divided by exactly two numbers: itself and one. The sequence of prime numbers is: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, ... and so on. Different cicada groups are known to emerge every 7, 13 or 17 years – all prime numbers.
It’s thought they do this as a way of protecting themselves from predators. If the cicadas emerged every 12 years then they could potentially be eaten by creatures with life cycles of 2, 3, 4 and 6 years (all of which divide into 12). By picking a prime number they give themselves the best chance of dodging predators because no other numbers except itself and one divide into a prime number.
It's not only the natural world where using prime numbers is useful for protection. Computer programmers also use them to protect our online data (see p.70).
Fun

Fractals
Maths doesn't get much prettier than a F R A C T A L . These amazing patterns have copies of themselves hidden within them. You can zoom in or out and see the same shape over and over again.
Fractals are found all over the natural world from winding rivers to forked lightning. Scientists have even revealed the presence of fractals within the human body. Your bones are made of two substances called collagen and apatite, arranged in a pattern that makes your skeleton particularly strong. Photographs taken of this structure with a powerful microscope show that this pattern repeats as a fractal.
Take a look at this fern. One of the side branches is just a miniature version of the whole thing. Look even more closely and you'll see that a side branch of that side branch is also the same!
It's not hard to see why fractals appear a lot in nature. As living things grow it is easy to make a different sized version of something you have already made before. It's the same design, just repeated on a larger or smaller scale.
6
Some mutations – like building a more efficient home or escaping from predators – are an improvement and they help the organism survive to have children of their own and pass on that advantage. Other times they aren't helpful and the creature never lives to pass on their mutation. Over many generations the best mutations are mutated even further until Nature has accidentally selected the best way to do something. So don't worry about making mistakes – some of the most beautiful things on the planet are the result of them!
Natural Selection Basics The natural world is an amazing place full of awe and wonder. If you're not careful, though, you might get the wrong idea about how it works. You might congratulate the bee for being so clever as to work out the right shape to make its honeycomb, celebrate the sunflower for the smart way it sorts its seeds or commend the cicada for avoiding being eaten.
GALAPAGOS ISLAND TORTOISES
Isabela Island tortoise Eats low plants
In truth it wasn't a decision made by the bee, flower or bug – it was a mistake! CHARLES DARWIN famously published a very important book called On the Origin of Species in 1859, writing about a process called NATURAL SELECTION . Whenever a living thing passes on its genes, the information is never copied perfectly and the ‘child’ is slightly different from its parents. These small mistakes are called MUTATIONS .

I Really Want to Win Simon Philip
Lucia Gaggiotti
Today is Sports Day. I
CAN'T WAIT!
And as I know that I'll be great, I've planned how I will celebrate - because I'm going to win. Our heroine is determined that she's going to w in all the events at school sports day. The problem is that winning isn't as easy as it looks. She doesn't win the running race or the tug of war - and she can't even win a dancing contest. But perhaps winning isn't really the point. Perfectly matched author-illustrator duo Simon Philip and Lucia Gaggiotti return for the second title in the I Really Want to . . . series. So, as I really love to bake, I try with all my heart to make my favourite, most delicious cake — without a prize to win.
And, actually, I have to say I’ve had the most fantastic day! I don’t need prizes anyway or care if I don’t win.
My friend says now she thinks that I could give one final thing a try. A competition’s caught her eye; she thinks that
I could win!
This cake display’s incredible! Each cake looks more than edible. At least my entry’s credible – I can’t expect to win.
And now the judging has begun, but how to pick the cake that’s won? The prize could go to anyone. They
all deserve to win!
It’s fine to lose. It’s quite all right. The contest is
extremely tight.
But even so, my friend was right! She

A heart-warming story about friendship and kindness. With adorable illustrations by the talented Rosie Butcher. Features concentric die cut stars with sparkling glitter that little ones will love!
Stella had found a fallen star. It was tangled in the branches of an oak tree.
“If I rescue that star,” whispered Stella, “it will make all my wishes come true!”
Stella scrambled up the trunk and wriggled the star free. “That tickles!” she giggled as the star twinkled in her paws. Wrapping a piece of string around the star’s tummy, Stella fastened it to her bike and headed for home.
Suddenly, Stella heard a noise. “Aaatchooo!” It was Badger! “Oh, Stella,” he sighed. “My babies can’t sleep and my throat is so sore I can’t sing to them. Whatever shall I do?”
“Poor you!” said Stella. The star sparkled above her head and it gave her an idea.
“I wish I may, I wish I might,” Stella murmured, “magic a lullaby to sweeten this night!”

My teacher says . . . “She’ s very quiet.” Whenever I’ m working in a group.
And when I do feel like making a noise,

I’ m alone . . .
I summon the oceans roar.

Like I do when I’ m alone . . .
I swing over chasms, stumble through swamps, balance between ice-capped mountains,
climb up old rotten trees . . .

Her friends would beam and sway in time, They’d dance, not stomp and fight. Her songs weaved spells of
happiness,
By day and starry night.
“Your singing’s truly
magical,”
They sighed. “Oh, what a tone! Your voice is such a precious gift. The best we’ve ever known.”
But one hot and steamy summer’s night A storm raged all around.
Great forks of lightning crackled And the rain began to pound.
“Quick! Run for cover!” Milly cried. But then a tree went crash! Poor Milly didn’t stand a chance. It struck her neck –
KER-BASH!
Next morning, all the dinosaurs Begged Milly for a song. But not a single note
They roared,
“There’s something wrong!”
came out.
Her voice was damaged by the tree! She couldn’t say a word. She tried her best to sing a note But nothing could be heard. Her friends howled:
“This is just so sad!
Then Stegosaurus said: “Her singing brought us so much joy. Let’s sing to her instead!”

The world is full of different homes, from tents and huts to bobbing boats and apartments high up in the sky. What’s your home like?
One thing’s for sure. It won’t be the same as everybody else’s. r wide? o l l a t t i Is
So what makes a home a wonderful place? Is it a roof, doors, walls or cosy beds perhaps?
How many rooms does it have inside?
Let’s look around the world and back through history to find out why homes are so special.
One of the longest streets in the world stretches for 500 kilometres through Uruará, Brazil. That’s like walking from London to the Scottish border!
Some homes snuggle together in a street, like a line of friendly faces. Do you know any homes in busy streets and quiet lanes?
The world’s busiest cities have the noisiest streets. What sounds would you hear if you lived in a bustling city?
What would you hear if your home was in the countryside?
Streets don’t all look the same . . . The world’s most crooked street is Lombard Street, in San Francisco, USA. It zigzags eight times so that cars can get up the steep hill.
Some homes are on water, not on a street. Canal boats moor up next to pathways.
Roofs come in all shapes and sizes. They may be sloped, flat or even pointy. What does your roof look like? Do you know one that looks different to yours?
White storks build big, untidy nests, sometimes as long as beds, on roofs in Germany and nearby countries. The storks are thought to bring good luck.
The town of Sibiu in Romania is famous for having lots of roofs with eyes! The eyes are really attic windows shaped like eyelids.
In snowy countries. houses are often built with steeply sloping roofs so that, when it falls, the snow slips off.
In London, UK, there are beehives on the roofs of some apartment blocks. Beekeepers travel round town looking after lots of different beehives and collecting the honey.
Some of the world’s oldest homes were built 9,000 years ago in Catalhöyük (cha-tal hay-ook), Turkey. The homes had no doors and there were no streets – people walked around on the flat rooftops.
Some people put soil on their roof and grow plants up there. The soil helps to keep heat in the house, too, like a cosy blanket on top of the roof.
The Nenets people of Siberia don’t have solid roofs on their homes. They live in chums – pyramid-shaped tents covered in reindeer skins.
