100ml/4oz white peach purée
1 bottle (70cl/25fl oz) sparkling wine
Stir the purée and wine together in a jug. Pour slowly into chilled flutes, stirring gently as you go.
The classic Bellini, invented by Giuseppe Cipriani in 1948 at Venice’s famous Harry’s Bar and named after the 15th-century painter Giovanni Bellini, takes white peach purée and tops it up with prosecco.
Make your own purée by poaching very ripe peaches in a little water then straining through a fine sieve (sweeten it a little, if you like). Other summer fruits work well treated the same way – try raspberries, strawberries, blackcurrants or (my favourite) redcurrants. When autumn hits try blackberries, and in the depths of winter use rhubarb.
Fruit liqueurs such as crème de cassis (blackcurrant), crème de mûre (blackberry) or even apricot brandy are a handy standby, and damson and sloe gin also work well.
Red vermouths rub along nicely with sparkling wine, and to my mind make brilliant aperitifs as their appetising bitterness broods in the background of the fruity bubbles. About 20ml/¾fl oz
of vermouth in the bottom of a flute should do it, although the weight and intensity of your vermouth may mean you want to go lower or higher.
If I’m drinking decent fizz, it seems rather like gilding the lily to add anything else to its classy finesse. Sparkling wines of a more lowly pedigree, however, often respond well to a little gilding. Cheap fizz can be punishingly acidic after a glass or two, yet its edges can be so easily softened to give drinks real pizazz. Be aware that prosecco tends to have an underlying sweetness to it while cava is usually drier, so you may want to adjust things accordingly.
25ml/1oz Campari
125ml/4¼oz sparkling wine a few drops of orange bitters (optional)
Pour the Campari into a flute and top up with sparkling wine. The orange bitters are entirely optional but do transform this drink into something rather sublime.
Campari Corretto (meaning ‘corrected’) is a riff on the Bellini that uses Campari in place of the peach purée. I’ve selflessly tested this at some length and can report that it’s best with a heavy hand on the Campari so that its personality stands out amid all the sparkles.

A wonderful way to understand yourself better and appreciate the difference between tension and relaxation, is to tense muscles deliberately- and then to release them consciously. This can create endorphins, one of your feelgood chemicals. This exercise is simple but it can be a real happiness booster.
Lie down flat if you can, stretching out your legs and arms, letting your feet splay outwards and your arms rest a little way from your body. starting with both your feet, tense your muscles and scrunch them up as tightly as you can for up to five seconds. Then release them and enjoy the feeling of relaxation that sweeps through that part of you. Take a deep, comfortable breath. Repeat with your lower legs, upper legs, buttocks, torso, and lastly, arms and fingers. If you wish, repeat the whole exercise again, but this time tense for longer, for up to 10 seconds. You can make this exercise more detailed as well. For instance, you could start with just your right foot, then focus on your left foot and so on. Isolate whichever parts of your body that feel as though they need the most focus.
Notice how you are feeling afterwards. You may be aware of the blood flowing much more freely through your body and a lovely sense of relaxation that engulfs you. Repeat this exercise whenever you can and try to carry this sensation of letting go with you through the summer, allowing the warmth of this season to further enhance your sense of well-being.
Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water or watching the clouds float across the sky is hardly a waste of time.
John Lubbockskin and hair can become dry in the summer, especially if we are out and about in the sun. Being by the sea is a common summer pastime and the salty breeze can be drying too. The next time you put lotion on your body, or wash your hair, try doing it mindfully. That means making the whole experience a pleasure for all your senses. Treat yourself to a product that smells pleasing to you. Odour affects our taste buds so you might enjoy choosing a scent related to food such as coconut, apple or strawberry. start off by putting some of the product onto your hands and slowly rubbing them together. Take your time. How does the scent make you feel? What is the liquid like on your skin? Look at the liquid and notice its colour and what that means to you. Now rub it slowly and carefully over your hair or body. Notice whether your hair/

reikää = 48 (50, 58, 62) s. Yhdistä suljetuksi neuleeksi ja laita silmukkamerkki kainalon keskelle, puoliväliin lisättyjä silmukoita. Neulo sileää oikeaa neuletta PV:llä, kunnes työn pituus kainalosta on 3 (1, 1, 3) cm.
Aloita kavennukset silmukkamerkin molemmin puolin: SM, neulo o, kunnes jäljellä on 2 s ennen silmukkamerkkiä, 2 o yht kiert, SM, 2 o yht, neulo o krs:n loppuun. Joka kavennuskerroksella vähenee 2 s. Tee hihan kavennukset noin 3 (3,5, 3,5, 4) cm:n välein. Tee kavennukset yhteensä 8 (9, 11, 11) kertaa = työhön jää 32 (32, 36, 40) s.
Neulo sileää o, kunnes hihan pituus kainalosta on 26 (30, 37, 46) cm. Neulo sitten 1 krs seuraavasti:
*1 o KV2:lla, 1 o PV:llä*, toista *–* kerroksen loppuun. Vaihda työhön pienemmät puikot ja neulo
PV:llä *1 o, 1 n* -joustinneuletta 4 (5, 5, 5) cm. Päättele silmukat neuloen.
VIIMEISTELY
Kaavio A toistuu 16 (17, 18, 19) kertaa kerroksella.
APPLIED CASING
In this method, a separate strip of fabric is stitched onto the end of the sleeve and folded to the wrong side, then elastic is inserted to gather the sleeve end. This technique is useful if you’ve accidentally cut the sleeve too short for a normal turned-up hem.
1 Cut a piece of elastic to fit your wrist, plus about 1.5 cm (⁄ in.). Measure the circumference of the sleeve end, then cut a strip of fabric 2 cm (¾ in.) longer than this and 2 cm (¾ in.) wider than the elastic. Press 1 cm (⁄ in.) to the wrong side at each short end, and 5 mm (¼ in.) to the wrong side on each long edge.
2 Unfold one long edge, then pin it to the end of the sleeve, with right sides together. The casing ends should meet at the underarm seam. Machine stitch along the crease.
3 Fold the casing to the wrong side of the sleeve and press. Pin the casing to the sleeve and machine stitch it in place, leaving a small opening at the underam seam.
4 Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic, then feed it through the gap in the casing. Overlap the ends by about 1.5 cm (⁄ in.), then stitch them together.
5 Hand stitch the gap in the casing closed.
OPENINGS FOR CLOSEFITTING CUFFS
Cuffs that fit snugly around the wrist need an opening at the end of the sleeve for the wearer to slip their hand through; make this opening before you stitch the sleeve’s underarm seam and attach the cuff.
FACED CUFF OPENING
In this method, a rectangle of fabric (a facing) is stitched over the area where the sleeve end is to be slit, neatly finishing the raw edges. Cut the facing about 6.5 cm (2 ½ in.) wide and 2.5 cm (1 in.) longer than the slit.
1 Fold under and press 6 mm (¼ in.) to the wrong side along both long edges and one short edge of each facing strip. Machine stitch in place. Mark the position of the slit on the facing.
2 With right sides together, pin the facing over the end of the sleeve, matching up the marked slits on both pieces. Working from the facing side, stitch closely around the marked slit line in a V shape. Carefully cut up the middle of the slit, making sure you don’t cut through the stitches at the top.
3 Turn the facing to the wrong side of the sleeve and press. Tack (baste) the bottom edge of the facing in place, ready to attach the cuff. Stitch the facing to the sleeve, close to the edges; you can either machine stitch it in place or slipstitch by hand (see page 82). Press carefully.
