JIM MILLER

Assistant Dean of Honors College and Associate Professor of Communication “The department of communication has taken students to New York City for more than a decade. We visit media professionals, connect with alumni in communications and tour places like NBC studios. Recently, other departments have joined us, providing more students with opportunities to see their future professions play out in the real world. Theatre students see Broadway shows and connect with producers and actors. Business students study finance on Wall Street. The English department has studied literature and visited museums, while future teachers study education in a major urban area. It’s a powerful experience. At Harding, we recognize that learning is not limited to a classroom in Searcy, Arkansas. The world is our classroom, and the confidence students find through these experiences is invaluable.”

“Exploring New York City in small groups on our own gave us the confidence to go there and be successful in a major market like this. That entire trip was a confidence booster for all of us. I know the skills I’ve been learning in Searcy will help me thrive in this kind of environment.” – Madison Meyer, media production major 7

ARTS & HUMANITIES Sparking creative expression

The College of Arts and Humanities — seven departments with more than 40 majors and 35 minors — has been part of our story since the University’s beginning in 1924. Our mission is to train, nurture and equip graduates to be agile, decisive thinkers skilled in evaluation, reflection and problem-solving. Any program of study within the humanities will help you establish a foundation and understanding of human perceptions and emotions. With art and design, you can illustrate through ideas and observations, animate innermost thoughts and bring the extraordinary to life. Communication teaches you how to articulate thought, connecting the world with the individual and declaring who you are and what you might become. English, music and foreign language allow you to explore cultures through stories and song and communicate through many forms of expression. Learn about and find your place in history. These stories come to life with theatre, where you recount noble adventures and far-fetched dreams. The humanities spark notions and visions, write the text of life, and give voice to the heart. We all have a place in the humanities — come find yours! Find more information at

LYDIA BLACK Hometown: Killgore, Texas Major: Acting, with an entrepreneurial management minor Why Harding? I wanted this to be a time when I would be challenged but not pushed beyond my boundaries. Harding’s department of theatre seemed like it had the best balance of good quality theatre while telling stories that actually matter and are honorable to God, including him in our personal lives. I attended Honors Symposium, and that amazing experience really sealed the deal for me. Theatre and Business: I’ve always felt like I had to prove my intelligence, and being an acting major in the College of Business Administration, I felt a lot of pressure from myself to prove I have something to offer. But the professors were wonderful and intentionally vocalized that they saw my ability to manage people and think critically, and that grew my confidence so much. It can be easy to feel that I’m only good at one thing and that’s where I should stay because that’s what people expect of me. Dr. Jon Wood definitely challenged and pushed me, and the fact that he believed in me meant the world to me. What’s next for you? As much as I feel alive when I’m acting or directing, I feel just as alive when I’m talking about business and how we can make something people are going to want to buy and what actually matters to the customers. So I’m going to be starting a coffee shop with my older brother in Longview, Texas. I’m excited to do something new!

HALLE MILLER Hometown: Murphy, Texas Major: Psychology Halle Miller’s work in the Beyond Professional Identity research lab with Dr. James Huff has given her the opportunity to learn qualitative research from an expert, an experience she did not expect would be possible at the undergraduate level. Her research focuses on social connectedness among African American female students at a Christian university. “Hands-on learning helps me to make mistakes in a safe environment where I can learn from them now and do better in the future,” she said. Additionally, Halle’s participation in the Honors College helps her connect psychology to other courses, expanding her knowledge in topics that interest her. Advice from professors, a psychiatric internship and various leadership roles have prepared her well to pursue graduate programs. As a leader in the Black Student Association, Halle has helped provide a home for students of color. “It is important to have a place for students who may not always feel like they belong and to add another perspective to the conversations happening on campus. Harding is very community oriented. … I encourage you to look for opportunities to get involved in something that may be outside of your comfort zone.”

Our Alumni

ASHLEY FINCHER (’16) Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Having spent most of my childhood in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, I thought that I would begin my nursing career there. However, an encounter with Mayo Clinic representatives changed the course of my life, which I believe was a blessing from God. I have been able to make connections with other Harding alumni while working here, and our game nights are a great way to decompress after a group of hard shifts. I truly believe this is the place I was meant to begin my nursing career. I am a registered nurse in the cardiovascular surgical progressive care unit, providing care to young children and adults, and I am certified to care for patients with Left Ventricular Assist Devices. I also am involved in the education of new nurses, serving as preceptor, teaching a pediatric class and helping with yearly staff competencies. Harding’s nursing program emphasizes how to think critically and provide the best care for our patients and how to see the patient as a whole person and not just a disease or illness. The hands-on instruction we received proved to be an invaluable foundation for my initial training at Mayo Clinic. I will be forever grateful for how well Harding’s nursing program prepared me both academically and spiritually to successfully launch my career.

COLLEGE

Equipping leaders for action

The Honors College provides opportunities for exceptional students to grow in leadership, service and academic excellence. The college is committed to building a stimulating undergraduate experience that enhances the academic profile of students as they pursue opportunities after Harding. Students can graduate with honors distinction by earning credits in honors courses, fulfilling honors contracts and completing an honors thesis or capstone project. Honors classes fulfill requirements in the liberal arts curriculum and feature smaller enrollments with a discussion-based approach to learning. Honors contracts allow students to individualize their education by designing alternate assignments in discipline-specific courses with the oversight of a faculty mentor. The Honors College offers students opportunities to study abroad, participate in regional and national honors academic conferences, and participate in the Honors Student Association, which advocates for honors students and plans activities designed to enhance students’ undergraduate experience while building community within the college.

COLLEGE

Helping students find their paths

The University College serves the entire student body with a wide variety of support services and academic programs including academic tutoring and skills coaching as well as advising for students who are exploring majors and careers that best fit their individual interests and strengths. The Career Center, also housed within University College, offers a wide array of services including resume writing, interviewing and other skills associated with the job search process including job fairs and graduate school/professional program fairs. Academic programs include the interdisciplinary studies major, which provides an avenue for students to craft their own degree to meet their individual academic and professional goals. The college also

provides foundation courses and advising that give special assistance to students needing additional preparation for the mathematics and English liberal arts requirements. Additional programs offered within University College include English as a second language and two federally funded programs for underrepresented students: Upward Bound — which helps prepare high school students for college — and the McNair Scholars Program — which helps prepare Harding students for graduate studies. Our Faculty

HEATH CARPENTER Assistant Professor of English and Director of Interdisciplinary Studies

Interdisciplinary studies is a major for students who are looking for a specific course of study for which Harding has the ingredients but not the exact degree plan. We consider your goals, the profession you’re interested in and graduate programs you may be working toward and connect you to faculty mentors across campus. Out of that process, we choose courses offered in various departments to form a unique, purposedriven plan just for you. For example, Morgan Proffitt-Davis, former Student Association president, is now studying at Princeton Theological Seminary. She wanted a degree in theology, so we chose Bible classes in ethics and philosophy, paired with English and history classes, to make the perfect degree plan for her to get into that graduate program. Students are entering a dynamic, ever-changing job force. By the time our freshmen are seniors, entirely new jobs or fields may exist, and some may even create their own jobs. I encourage students to think about being prepared with a certain skill set, ready to apply their unique talents, interests, strengths and values to a variety of contexts in which they might flourish and thrive. If you can communicate, collaborate, and think creatively and critically, you will be successful in many different environments. Harding will help you get there.

Tutoring can benefit everyone, whether you need some extra help with a complicated course or want a boost to keep your 4.0. Offered to every student at no additional cost, peer-to-peer tutoring provides opportunities to learn from others’ experiences and knowledge. Supplemental Instruction targets difficult freshman and sophomore level courses through weekly study sessions led by students who have successfully completed the course. DISABILITY SERVICES

DIVERSITY SERVICES

“We don’t want anyone to feel embarrassed or uncomfortable in our office. It is about educational access. We have to talk about their disabilities, but then we’re moving on to what accommodations are reasonable for them and how we can remove barriers and level the playing field.”

“As Harding continues to gain momentum in the quest to form a more equitable culture, I am encouraged to work daily to make this a reality. … I love that the University is committed to creating a culture where we acknowledge and honor the successes and failures of our past in an effort to redefine our future, and I am confident that one day soon we will have many more stories to share with our Harding family.”

– Bridget Smith, director of disability services and educational access Students with documented learning, physical or psychological disabilities are eligible for reasonable accommodations in the classroom or for testing. Students with chronic illnesses or temporary medical needs that pose a barrier to class attendance will receive accommodations that allow them to continue in a course as long as it does not alter the fundamental nature of the learning objectives. Each student has specific strengths and weaknesses, and the Office of Disability Services and Educational Access is committed to being a place where students feel encouraged and empowered to meet their full potential. Our mission is to serve these students and ensure they have equitable access to academics and campus life at Harding.

– Tiffany Byers, director of diversity services Harding University is committed to being a diverse community that demonstrates a Christ-like understanding of and respect for all people, modeling and practicing the reconciliation made possible by the Gospel of Christ. We strive to recruit and retain a diverse student body by maintaining a culture that values diversity and respects differences. It is our goal to support and enhance the Harding experience for our students of color and those from other countries and cultures through mentorship, specialized resources and campus organization like the Multicultural Student Action Committee, Black Student Association, and Chinese Students and Scholars Association.

Searcy’s vibrant downtown is a great place for students to explore local restaurants and businesses. Catch a movie at the historic Rialto Theatre; stroll through Art Alley; practice yoga at Nooma studios; take classes in woodworking or arts & crafts; or attend a Beats & Eats event on the square. You can get involved with local churches and nonprofit organizations to make a difference right here in our town. A short drive to Little Rock expands your options with entertainment, sports, arts, dining and shopping in Arkansas’ capital city.

students who participate in social clubs annually

Our Students

SPENCER STRASSER Hometown: Ormond Beach, Florida Major: Accounting Why did you decide to join a social club? I decided to join a club freshman year to meet people I may not have had the chance to interact with — people with different interests and points of view. I also wanted to find a community that enjoyed similar activities, like fishing and camping. More importantly, I wanted a group that would encourage me to grow spiritually. What are your favorite social club activities? Sports are a good way to see friends and stay active. From water polo to basketball, there’s always something to do. Biweekly meetings and devotionals are also great to stay in touch with how the members of the club are truly doing. How does being in a club help create relationships? Beta Omega Chi is a medium-sized club, and one of the things we do best is making intentional relationships. I always feel comfortable enough with any member that I could start a genuine conversation or share concerns. Sponsors have been not only great role models but true friends I can joke with and enjoy their wisdom. Through club week and Spring Sing I was able to meet many members from other clubs and make friendships that will last beyond my senior year. These relationships may be what I cherish most.
