The 27th Convocation address was delivered by Shri R.C Bhargava, Chairman, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. He started with congratulating the students and spoke on the founder late Shri T. A. Pai. His major focus was on how the new graduates should plan to go further in their career. He continued by sharing his own career experiences and changes that he has seen in the past 5 decades. His shared his growth story from being an IAS officer to become the Chairman of Maruti and about his educational experience while pursuing Masters in Developmental Economics from Williams College U.S. He took an unpredictable path and chose to join Maruti, his selection of not being a District Commissioner while in IAS and moving to the Corporate world. He spoke on how to plan for future, and emphasized on doing the task at present to the best of one's ability to achieve success in life. As he had no preconceived idea of responsibilities of an IAS officer it helped him to think with an open mind while keeping on learning continuously.

He spoke on Kaizen and continuous improvements along with the ability to sustain it, and how Maruti stood tall even when it faced competition from Hindustan Motors and others. Mr Bhargava spoke on recognizing the failures to improve the present condition of business and how adoption of ethical standards from the beginning ensures a longer sustenance. He spoke on the ability of management to motivate workers and make them committed, which played a key role in Maruti's success. He shared how while formulating policies, Maruti thought from the workers' point of view and how wealth was distributed. He spoke on the drawbacks of the theory that high salary means higher productivity, which is not the right parameter.

Mr. Bhargava spoke on the decision of his joining the agricultural administration and later the power sector and how his lack of knowledge about these areas forced him to put more effort in learning about these sectors. He shared his experience from 1983 when Maruti had to formulate an SOP for the shop floors for which they were associated with the Suzuki engineers. Before this association, Maruti had a notion that their previous plan regarding the SOP was perfect but suggestions from Suzuki to implement Kaizen in their processes made them realize their weak spots. Hence, to learn from others, one has to be humble and devoid of feeling of superiority.

His last part of the speech was based on the improvement of the social structure of the society by tapping the resources of rural India. “As Service Sector is facing a steep decline, GDP can't be solely relied on the performance of services; hence manufacturing sector has to take the lead if India wants to stay on the path of progress”. Also, since manufacturing sector does not pay at par with services and financial sectors, to overcome this, Education has to be made cheaper while maintaining the quality. Shri Bhargava concluded by stating that India needs to use technology if poverty and corruption have to be eradicated. The convocation concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Prof. Vinod Madhvan.

Mr Bhargava spoke on the importance of doing things by oneself and acquiring hands on knowledge. He gave example of the British who emphasized on practical knowledge. He stated that India is experiencing poor implementation of policies and micro level thinking is required to change this attitude. “If one really wants to be respected, then he has to earn it from his knowledge and actions” these were Mr Bhargava's words regarding the global competition that Maruti is facing.

UDUPI / MANIPAL INFORMATON Ashta Mathas of Udupi From Wikipedia.

The Tulu Ashta Mathas of Udupi are a group of eight mathas or monasteries established by Sri Madhvacharya the preceptor of the Dvaita school of Hindu thought. For each of the eight mathas, Sri Madhvacharya also appointed one of his direct disciples to be the first Swamiji. The names of the mathas and the first Swamijis are: • • • • • • • •

Palimaru - Sri Hrishikesha Tirtha Adamaru - Sri Narasimha Tirtha Krishnapura - Sri Janardhana Tirtha Puttige - Sri Upendra Tirtha Shirur - Sri Vamana Tirtha Sodhe - Sri Vishnu Tirtha Kaniyooru - Sri Raama Tirtha Pejavara - Sri Adhokshaja Tirtha

When the ashta mathas were formed, Sri Madhvacharya initiated the Swamijis of the mathas in pairs. Each pair of mathas is called Dwandva (literally, two or dual). In the event the current Paryaya Swamiji has difficulty performing his duties, the Swamiji from the Dwandwa matha takes over the responsibility. The four pairs of mathas are: Palimaru and Adamaru; Krishnapura and Puttige; Shirur and Sodhe; and Kaniyooru and Pejavara.

The ashta mathas are named after the villages in which they were originally located. Today, the mathas are situated in the temple town of Udupi. The mathas work to propagate the Dvaita philosophy. They also administer the famous Udupi Krishna Temple by way of a formal rotation scheme called Paryaya.

BEACHES AROUND UDUPI Kaup Beach a hamlet of Padu village about l2 kms south of Udupi Kaup is situated on the coastal belt, which passes through the West Coast National Highway. Marda Heggade, a chieftain, rose to power here during the Vijayanagara days. It has an old lighthouse, the guiding star of navigators who are warned of the presence of dangerous rocks in the sea. This Tower of light not only guides the ships but also has a monumental significance. Positioned all alone it spreads light on the shore of darkness. It was most probably begun in 1906 on the rocks and in about 1935 the tower was all set. The man made tower is at the height of about 34 meters and its light spreads over a distance of about 34 miles and can be seen from a distance of about 100 miles. The place is known for its temples of goddess Mariamma. The JainaBasadi there is in ruins and so also an old Janardhana shrine. Malpe Beach is about 4kms to the west of Udupi, Malpe is an important port of the Karnataka coast. It is situated at the mouth of the Malpe/Udyavara River. The river is navigable to small cargo boats for about ten kms during high tide. The place has fascinating natural scenic view. It has been a centre of commercial activities for a long time, and one plus point is that it is a natural port. There are three rocky islands to the west of it. The northern-most island is called Daria-Bahadurgad, the middle one Daria-Gadara-Kallu and the southernmost Kari-Illada-Kallu. The DariaBahadurgad port is famous for its export of processed fish to foreign countries. The sea between the rocky islands and the shore is a safe anchorage for vessels during storms and rough weather.

Brahmavar Beach is a village about 13 kms north of Udupi. It has been mentioned as Brahmaputr, Brahmavuar and Brahmara in the inscription, which means 'a settlement of Brahmins'. It is an ancient cultural centre of the region being adjacent to Barkur, which was the capital town; Brahmavar must have been a prosperous city. There are three main temples in Brahmavar (1) the Mahalinga temple (2) Gopinatha temple, (3) Janardhana shrine in the agrahara. Shankaranarayana Beach is about 32 kms to the east of Kundapur, is traditionally called also as KrodhaKshetra and is one of the seven places of pilgrimage in the region, referred to in the SkandhaPurana. Shankaranarayana means Shiva and Vishnu. According to a legend, a sage named Krodha performed penance here and a spot with a cave here are shown as having been the site of his ashrama. The place is situated near the Western Ghats amidst fascinating surroundings. It is famous for its large Shankaranarayana temple, which has been recently renovated. Just in front of the temple there is a pond, which is called KotiTeertha. Maravanthe Beach, a drive along the NH-17 towards the north, to Maravanthe proves to be truly memorable. The gurgle of the waves, the soft gentle breeze kissing your cheeks and a round ball of crimson in the horizon transforms Maravanthe into a breathtaking fairyland.Maravanthe (Kundapurataluk), about nine kms east of Kundapura is one of the most beautiful spots of South Kanara along the east coast. It is an enchanting place, where on the western side, the Arabian Sea is stretching, while on the eastern side, runs the Saurpanika River and in between them passes the west coast road. Thus only a road divides the sea and the river. Murdeshwar Beach, a picturesque place situated 16 km from Bhatkal has a gorgeous temple perched on a hillock by the shore. The temple, which embodies a Linga, is believed to have erupted when Ravana flung the cloth covering the Atmalinga at Gokarna while lifting it. As one ascends the hillock, there is a shrine of Jattiga seated on a horse. It is said that Tipu renovated the huge fort behind the temple. Bounded by the shimmering sea and rolling hills, this place is a favourite tourist spot.
