Founder of TAPMI

(1922-1981) Late Shri Tonse Ananth Pai (T. A. Pai) was born on the 17th of January 1922. He was the eldest of four sons of Late Shri Tonse Upendra Pai. After his early childhood spent in Udupi district, he went to Bombay (now, Mumbai) to pursue his education. He graduated in Commerce from Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in 1943. Shri T.A. Pai joined Syndicate Bank in 1943 as Deputy Manager. After holding several positions in the bank and being the General Manager from 1944 to 1961, he rose to become Managing director from 1962 to 1964. His stewardship of the bank is credited with a number of achievements - fastest growth, pioneering schemes, innovation in mobilisation of small savings, agricultural financing and focus on the common man. He was appointed as Chairman of Food Corporation of India in 1965. After a little over one year, he rejoined Syndicate Bank in 1966 and was appointed its Chairman in 1967. The Government of India appointed him Chairman of Life Insurance Corporation in 1970. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1972 and appointed as Union Minister for Railways. In 1973, he was given responsibility for the newly created Ministry of Heavy Industries, and subsequently, additional charge of Ministry of Steel and Mines. Shri Pai took over the Ministry of Industry and Civil Supplies in 1974, and thus became responsible for industrial development of India. Awards and recognition came his way in many forms. He was conferred the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1972. He was awarded the degree of D.Litt. by Karnataka University in 1973. The Andhra University decorated him with the degree of D.Litt. in 1975. He founded Manipal Institute of Management in 1980 (later renamed as TAPMI). He passed away on the 29th of May 1981. 02

Chairman's Message I am immensely pleased to pen down my message for TAPMI's annual magazine UPDATE-2013. TAPMI's accomplishing the global AACSB accreditation has certainly proved beyond doubt its unique position in the management education space in India. I firmly believe that by all standards, TAPMI is a high quality institution with its intrinsic strengths, excellent practices in delivery of curriculum and offering best of campus life to students. While there is mushrooming of B-Schools in the country, TAPMI has been able to stay head and shoulder above the rest of the business schools purely through its inherent strength and vibrancy. The achievements recorded by its students, alumni and faculty members at different platforms in academics and research are highly commendable. A host of eminent educationists, industry professionals and speakers visited the campus to interact with our fraternity during the academic year. The Institute has been viewed by all these dignitaries as an example of excellence in management education. UPDATE-2013 vouches for the vibrancy with which TAPMIans live on its green campus and get groomed to become good managers. I sincerely appreciate each and every TAPMIan for making TAPMI a great learning centre. I wish everyone in the Institute the very best in their endeavour to take it to greater heights in the years to come.

Naming of two Buildings During the programme on K. K. Pai National Award for Excellence in Banking held on February 25, 2013, our chairman announced the names of the two academic buildings in TAPMI as 'Dr. TMA Pai Block' and 'K K Pai Block'.

From the Director's Desk Time ! It is constantly on the move; does not wait for any. We stand and stare; time passes by. We act; we achieve along the way. A year is a large chunk of time when a lot happens in a society. TAPMI is a society that engages itself with the immigrants from various parts of the country, makes them domicile in the campus for two years and bids them adieu with a sense of satisfaction. This is immediately followed by the smiles of welcome to the new batch of students, and quiet flows the Suvarna nearby, that smiles and says "I haven't waited too" ! The year 2012-13 has been a year of buzz. We received the much coveted AACSB Accreditation. We are the only legitimate business school in India to achieve this. The scaled up student-strength brought with it the challenges as well as opportunities. Many new events were conducted. Many innovations were attempted. New strategies were adopted for providing better career to the graduating batch at better salaries and for acquiring summer internships with more stipends for the freshers. Greater thrust of research among faculty provided rich dividend. Students proved to be the best brand ambassadors by winning in over 60 competitions conducted across in the country in several leading business schools. Alumni's engagement with the Institute has touched an all time high. TAPMI is now seen to be a vibrant business school in India, an image that shall be leveraged in the years to come. In all, the year 2012-13 has been a year of immense satisfaction. It has been a year of achievement. Update 2013 captures the year well. R. C. Natarajan

Recognitions To TAPMI TAPMI earns AACSB International Accreditation

T. A. Pai Management Institute, popularly known as TAPMI, Manipal has earned initial accreditation of its postgraduate programs, PGDM and PGDM (Healthcare) by the Board of Directors of AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of BusinessInternational in USA. Founded in 1916, AACSB International is the longest serving global accrediting body for business schools that offer bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees in business and accounting. "During the accreditation process, TAPMI was visited and evaluated by Business School Deans from reputed institutions in USA with detailed knowledge of management education, applying the accreditation standards that are widely-accepted in the educational community. These evaluations processes involved rigorous review of TAPMI's mission and how its curriculum, structure, systems, processes and people fit together to achieve this mission. They used what is known as triangulation process that checked the

veracity of the school's claim of following the processes they declared by talking to various stakeholders in formal as well as informal settings," said Dr. Natarajan. TAPMI's achievement was recognized in the end of April at the 2012 AACSB International Conference and Annual Meeting (ICAM) in San Diego, California, US. TAPMI earns A*** Grading by CRISIL TAPMI, Manipal, a top-rated autonomous B-School which is ranked high by the Research agencies and Business magazines, and widely recognised by the Industry for its high quality education was graded as A*** at national and state (Karnataka) level during the year 2012. This is the highest grade for any B-School in India. For the second consecutive year CRISIL has reaffirmed this highest grading at both the levels, which is valid up to October 2013.

Credit Rating Information Services of India Limited (CRISIL) established in 1988, a subsidiary of Standard & Poor's, is an agency primarily engaged in Credit ratings of the Corporates to felicitate financial related decision making. In the year 2010, CRISIL diversified into Grading of B-Schools in India and their programmes. As on date, 22 B-Schools have been graded at different levels. Earlier, in April 2012, TAPMI earned the global accreditation by AACSB-International with the unique distinction of being the only AICTE approved Business School in India to have achieved this fete.

• Competition Success Awards TAPMI received “Top Institute of India” Award on April 28 at CSR Awards Night in New Delhi conducted by Competition Success Review Magazine. TAPMI has been honored with this award for the second consecutive year. • Dewang Mehta Business School Awards 20th Dewang Mehta Business School Awards in association with Business School Affaire and Hindustan Unilever ltd. The event was held at Taj Lands End, Mumbai, on November, 24, 2012. TAPMI, Manipal was honoured with The Best B-SchoolManagement category. TAPMI also received Five awards under other categories at the same event.

• Best Placement Brochure TAPMI Placement Brochure 2013, themed Challenging Limits was adjudged the Best Placement Brochure at the Dewang Mehta B-School Awards held at the 20th Dewang Mehta B-School Affaire 2012, held at TAJ Land Ends, Mumbai in association with B School Affaire and Hindustan Unilever ltd. • South Asian Academy Awards TAPMI received South Asian Academy Education Awards in 3 categories at a brief function held at Hotel, The Bell & Convention Centre, near Majestic Bus Stand, Bangalore hosted by educationexpo.tv, UP, Noida. The Research wing for Excellence in Professional Education & Industry of the educationexpo.tv evaluated the institutes on 35 objective indicators and TAPMI was judged as best in Karnataka and has received 3 awards. In all, 56 applications were received in different categories (like Engineering, Management, etc) from all over India, 25 were shortlisted and 10 Institutes / Colleges were awarded. The Award ceremony was held on June 25, 2012 at Bangalore.

ADMISSIONS 2013-15 for PGDM / PGDM-Healthcare TAPMI signed MoUs with IIM for CAT, XLRI for XAT and AIMA for MAT examinations. GMAT is also considered as eligible test. The Institute signed MoUs with 2 Banks (Axis and Indian Overseas) and with 2 coaching centers (TIME & IMS learning) for Sale of TAPMI Hand books as also with Thotmatrix for Online Application & Payment Gateway. We released the Pan India Admissions 2013 Ad in Newspapers during September 24-26, 2012 in The Hindu, Telegraph and Hindustan Times and Identified the Venues, Centers of GDPI. Two new centers added to the existing centers, Cochin & Ahmadabad. MoUs with online platforms such as MBAUniverse.com, Pagalguy.com, Career Launcher and MBArendezvous.com for promoting TAPMI Admissions-2013 through Web banner, Emailer etc were also signed. Online Sale of Applications was arranged from 17th September, 2012 to January 15, 2013 and was later extended to Feb 05 to cater to XAT

Aspirants. TAPMI released the Pan India Admissions 2013 extension Ad in Newspapers during January 15, 2013 in Times of India about the last date. Handbooks were also sold over the counter by TAPMI, Manipal and TAPMI- CEE, Bangalore. 7,667 candidates registered for the TAPMI -PGDM & PGDM-Healthcare Programmes, ( increase by 15% over last year). This year, we increased cut off levels to maintain high standard of students. Shortlisted 4,739 candidates for GD-PI for nine centers to be held between Feb 27 till April 07, 2013. GD-PI panel members include Faculty Members, Alumni, Corporate Executives and Visiting & Adjunct Faculty Members. Healthcare and NRI candidates were called to TAPMI, Manipal for GD and Personal Interviews. Exceptional Candidates are being sent offer letters immediately after GDPI completion at each center to respond with an acceptance by the candidates within a week's time.

These photographs were taken at few centers on one of the days showing the GD, PI and Briefing by Centre Co-ordinators. GDPIs were held for 28 days at 9 centres, viz: Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Cochin, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Manipal and New Delhi.

Orientation Cum Induction (2012-14) The 2012-14 Batches of PGDM and PGDM-HC students of the two management programmes joined the TAPMI family through a formal Induction Programme that spanned for two days - 25-26 June, 2012.

The program started with lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, Mr. Gautam Pai, Managing Director, Manipal Technologies Ltd., Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor, Manipal University, Dr. H Shantaram, Trustee and Member-Governing Council, Dr R C Natarajan, Director, TAPMI and two student representatives of the batch. Prof. Prashant Yatgiri, Chairman-PGP in his opening speech, warmly welcomed all the dignitaries on the Dais. The Deans, Associate Deans, Faculty members, Staff, PGP-2 students and most importantly the Students of 30TH batch of PGDM & 3RD batch of PGDMHEALTHCARE were present. Dr Prashant gave a snapshot of the profile of the batch with some interesting statistics. This batch has 309 PGDM and 24 PGDM-HCM students totaling to a magical figure of 333. Female students constituted 29%. Students holding Engineering Degrees with an average 2.5 years corporate experience represented by 78% of the batch were dominant. In the PGDM-HCM section, 38% are represented by Pharmacy graduates besides one student from Medical Science and two from Dental Science background. Interestingly, the batch represents 18 states, covering 92 different places in India. Dr R C Natarajan, Director, TAPMI in his welcome address stressed on the sacrifices that today's students have to make to pursue their Management career. He welcomed the students to the beautiful town of Manipal, which is located amidst nature with enough peace and serenity and without buzz of cosmopolitan

cities. He briefed them on how they will be moulded from boys and girls metamorphosed into gentlemen and ladies. The Chief Guest, Mr. Gautam Pai urged the students that they should first be aware of where they are heading and should take the right road to achieve it. He stressed that one should work more on building one's own strengths while also working on the weaknesses. He said that future managers should dream big and work with passion and excellence to go beyond their dreams. He said that of late there are many scandals in the society. So, he urged that one should have values and integrity to one's work. Students should be doing right things even when no one is watching. A person should be a good Manager to his Leader and a good Leader to his subordinates. He said that we should keep our minds open and learn from others. Dr H Shantaram, Governing Council Member of TAPMI addressed the students and spoke about Dr. T M A Pai, a multifaceted personality who was a good Doctor, a Banker and Educationist. He wanted to eradicate Illiteracy, Ill health and Poverty. He was a Visionary leader and was the brain behind the evolution of Manipal about 60 years back.

Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor, Manipal University and Governing Council Member of TAPMI delivered the presidential address. He said that in this 21st knowledge century, education has no physical boundaries and we should compete at International level and applauded TAPMI for its recent achievement of AACSB accreditation. He emphasized that there are no shortcuts to success other than hard work. He said that we should keep ourselves updated continuously and never forget Parents, Teachers and the Alma mater. Prof. Gururaj Kidiyoor proposed a vote of thanks. 11

The new students were then briefed on Brandscan, MIP, IT Resources, Library Facilities, and Hostel Facilities at TAPMI by different functional heads. The Day two of the Induction started with an Interaction with Ms. Simran Bhasin, Alumnus of TAPMI belonging to 1999-2001 batch and currently Brand Manager at Titan Ltd. She spoke on the industry expectations of a manager and on her nostalgic moments at TAPMI. She compared the present, modern state of art Infrastructure of TAPMI with those during her studies, when it operated out of simple leased premises. The students then had a brief interaction with Mr. Naru

Navele, who is a Partner with Deloitte & Touche LLP visited TAPMI during the new batch induction. Naru leads the Risk Advisory practice for Deloitte & Touche AERS India Private Limited and also serves as the AsiaPacific Leader for Risk & Capital for the financial services industry and is based in Hyderabad, India. He addressed the new batch and the second year students on how to communicate effectively and laid stress on good learning attitude, focus, communication skills, respect for alma mater, networking abilities along with good grasp of subjects that is essential for a successful career in today's highly competitive world.

Cultural Gala at Induction

To mark the end of the formal induction, the students also had sportingly put up a cultural performance mainly to showcase the talent in new batch. The occasion was graced by the presence of faculties, students (PGP - 1 and PGP - 2) and Parents. The cultural evening started with a jugalbandi of Bharathnatyam and Kathak on "Ganesh Vandana". This was followed by a classical song and a group dance by girls. A girl-boy group dance on the theme of "Raslila" also enthralled the audience. The charisma and excitement of the occasion got the right direction with a singing performance from Prof. Chowdari Prasad, Dean Branding and Promotions.

The masters of ceremony were two students from the new batch who really made the crowd remain glued to the seats. On an ending note a fun defining "Bhangara" performance by the new batch boys really took the excitement among the crowd to the next level. Lastly as the tradition goes some of the talented bunch of second year students too graced the occasion with their performance. Academics and rigor cannot keep TAPMI students away from fun as defined by this cultural event during induction. The Whole cultural event was coordinated by Cultural Committee of batch 2011-13.

Placements 2013 TAPMI has completed its final placement for the batch of 2011-13, with top companies including KPMG, IBM, Godrej & Boyce, Titan, Tyco, L&T, Amul, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant providing a total of 215 offers. While highest annual package offered at the institute was Rs.15.84 lakh, the average domestic package stood at Rs 8.65 lakh.

While IT and ITES sector emerged favorite among the students with 84 students out of 215 opting for this sector, BFSI stood second as it attracted 40 students. Companies from other sectors like Consulting, Healthcare, Manufacturing, E-commerce and Analytics also recruited in good numbers.

T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) has completed its final placement for the batch of 2011-13, with top companies including, IMaCS, KPMG, IBM, Titan, Tyco, L&T, Amul, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, TechMahindra, HCL, Citicorp, ICICI Bank, DRL, Flipkart hiring the entire batch of 229 students.

A total of 215 students were eligible for placement and all of them got lucrative job offers. A total of 67 companies participated in the placement process. 26th Convocation - 2012

The 26th Convocation ceremony of TAPMI was held at the SyndicateBank Golden Jubilee Auditorium, Manipal. Mr. Jai Saini, President of 2011-2013 PGP batch, escorted the outgoing students, the Professors and other dignitaries into the auditorium. The chief guest of this event was Dr. J.J Irani, former Managing Director of TATA Steel. Dr Ramdas Pai, Chairman of the Governing Council of TAPMI declared the Convocation open. Prof. Simon George welcomed the Chief Guest of the event and all the invitees.

This was followed by the Director, Dr. R.C. Natarajan's address. He shared some of the success stories of TAPMI. He congratulated students of the outgoing batch and their parents. He spoke about various achievements of the students and faculty of TAPMI, the leadership lectures by distinguished speakers and various events conducted by the student committees including the social activities. He also spoke of the future expansion plans of TAPMI. Dr A.S Vasudev Rao, Dean (Administration) introduced the chief guest, Dr J.J Irani to the audience. This included the academic and professional achievements as also various positions held by the honorable chief guest. Chairman of the Post Graduate Program Dr. Gururaj Kidiyoor conducted the convocation program of award of PG Diplomas in Management. The batch of 20102012 has a strength of 190, out of which 186 students received their graduation certificates from Dr. Irani while four others were to receive their graduation certificates in absentia. This year also marks the convocation of the first batch of Health Care Management.

Special awards were presented to the most meritorious students of PGDM and PGDM- Healthcare. Shrimati Gangamma Ammanayya award, which is presented to most meritorious lady students Ms. Deepika Vij for Marketing and Ms. Sony Bajaj for Finance, was given away by Dr. Ramdas Pai. Dr KS Iyer Award was presented to Mr. Anup Dhanuka for Finance by Dr. Ramdas Pai, who also presented Dandapani Award for the best outgoing students, Ms Paminderjit Sunner (1stplace), Anup Dhanuka (2nd place) and Mr. Amit Nahata (3rd place). The TAPMI Achiever of the Year Award and AgroEvo award which is given to the most extraordinary student who has contributed to the institute in various fronts was presented by the chief guest to Mr. Amit Nahata and Mr. Prasad Nayak respectively. Director R C Natarajan made the outgoing students take the professional Oath.

Dr J.J Irani delivered the convocation address bringing out his keen insights on leadership and dire need the country faces for good and effective leaders with great leadership qualities. He also stressed the need for eradication of sectarian views and put our efforts towards the growth of the country. He brought to light the importance of wealth generation for any good program to be implemented. Describing leader's qualities he insisted that a leader should be able to tell the truth, accept the challenges and take responsibility even in difficult times. Commenting further, he added that a leader must be a visionary with good communicating powers so that a leader can establish two way communications with his followers. According to Dr. Irani, Credibility was another important quality a leader must have. He concluded his speech by urging the students to work for inclusive growth of the country and to work hard for the well being of the environment. Dr Ramdas Pai concluded the Convocation which was followed by a Vote of Thanks proposed by Prof. Raghunath Rudran, Associate Dean (Administration).

TAPMI to start its 3rd Batch of EPGP- EG programme Executive Post Graduate Programme in E-Governance (EPGP-EG) from TAPMI-NISG: A unique academic program on e-Governance The national e-Governance Plan is a bold step that aims to place India among the top nations in providing online services to citizens. The Government envisages a significant role for the private sector (consulting and IT organizations) in taking forward the various Misson Mode Projects that comprise the NeGP. The key challenge, however, is an acute shortage of professionals both in the public and private sectors who conceptualize, develop, implement and maintain MMPs.

EPGP-EG has been conceptualized to help the government and private sectors develop eGovernment competencies within their structure. Supported by the Department of Information Technology, Government of India and Industry stalwarts, the EPGP-EG programme of TAPMI aims to bridge the existing gap in the availability of skilled professionals in the e-Government space. • Prof. Ajith Kumar & Dr. Siva Kumar, case study 'PRIMACY: GLOBAL DESIGN FROM INDIA?' was selected as winners in the Innovation Management category, by the Centre for Leadership, Innovation, and Change (CLIC) at ISB-Ivey case competition held on August 27. The Prize money was US $ 2000. This case will be published by ISB-Ivey team and the Abstract of the case will be published on the homepage of Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Case Development, ISB, Hyderabad. • Prof. Ajith Kumar presented a paper on “Staff Scheduling for Service Support: A Simulation-based Study“ at the 16th Annual Conference of the Society of Operations Management during December 21-23, 2012 held at Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi. This conference was jointly hosted by Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Indian Institute of Management Lucknow and Grand Valley State University USA at IITD, Hauz Khas, New Delhi. • Prof. Ajith Kumar Participated in the AACSB's Assurance of Learning seminar held at the Hotel Hilton, Kuala Lumpur on October 13 & 14, 2012. • Prof. Debmallya Chatterjee presented on “Evaluating Tourism websites: A fuzzy analytical approach” at the Second national conference NaCCS-2012 held at University of Burdwan, West Bengal during 15-16th March 2012. • Prof. Debmallya Chaterjee visited Delhi to present a paper titled: Calibrating managerial effectiveness: an empirical study, jointly written with Prof. P. S. James at the International conference, FOBE 2012, organized by IMT Ghaziabad during November 2930, 2012 at India Habitat Center, New Delhi. There were 100+ presentations scheduled across the two days and 9 tracks. His presentation was scheduled in the 6th track called 'Beyond norms: Business excellence'. The presenters were from UP, MP, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Odisha, Karnataka and many more states other than Delhi and NCR. There were a few presenters from abroad too. The University is spearheading the initiative of New Zealand for bilateral business. The talk was on the opportunities for business in India and New Zealand can leverage to utilize its strength. The High Commissioner of India to New Zealand, senior managers from ANZ Bank and Hamilton Chamber of Commerce members also gave insight into the area. The forum showed keen interest in seeking the support of TAPMI for research assistance to make their objectives a reality. The forum is planning an annual brainstorming alternative between India and New Zealand each year. • Prof. Prashant Yatgiri was invited by Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur as an external examiner for the evaluation and Viva Voce of Ph.D thesis titled “ Emergence of Serviced Apartments in Chennai, Bangalore & Tier II city Nagpur: Problems, Future and Prospects”. • Prof. Raghunath Rudran handled a one day session (eight hour) on "Quantitative Toolkit for Project Managers". The programme takes the participants through descriptive statistics, concepts of probability, probability distributions, decision trees and simulation. Part of the programme is run on hands on Pallisade tools such as Stattools and Precision Trees. The one day session is a part of their L &T's L-2 programme for senior project managers, which consists of 24 contact days, spread across various subjects and knowledge areas. Prof. Raghunath Rudran is doing this programme for the fifth time for L&T IPM, Baroda ". • Prof. Raghunath Rudran handled a one day programme for Graduate Engineering Trainees of L&T (Larsen &Toubro), in the area of Project Management, at the L&T C-TEA (L&T Center for Technological and Engineering Applications), Mysore campus on 02.08.2012. The engineers will be later posted to various sites of L&T, including gulf countries, where they will be involved in various project management activities. The programme covered various topics such as Overview of Project Management stages, understanding the nature of projects, what differentiates project management from other management, Project Manager's roles and responsibilities, Work Break down structure, Networking Techniques, crashing, probabilistic approach to activity time estimation, use of beta distribution and normal distribution to estimate probability of project completion in a given time, etc. All this is expected to enable the GETs to perform better during Project Monitoring and Execution. • Prof. Raghunath Rudran completed a one day session on "Quantitative Toolkit for Young Executives of L&T". Shah presented a paper titled, “Conversion of plastic waste into more useful products- Need for a direct tax support policy in India” at the International Conference on Inclusive and Sustainable Growth (Role of Industries, Governments and Civil Society) held at Pune from the 4th to the 6th of October, 2012. • Prof. A V Ramancharyulu's Environmental Management Research Project under the Centre for Inclusive Growth (CIG) has been approved by AICTE which has sanctioned Rs. 5.75 Lakhs towards the same. This was announced by Dr. Suresh, Director, AICTE, New Delhi. • Prof. A V Ramanacharyulu coordinated a three day workshop on “Blue Ocean Strategy concept in India” for the senior executives of Corporates of NCR Region, Delhi. The workshop was organised in association with CRICT, New Delhi.

• Prof. Rishi Keshav Ram participated in a 5 day Faculty Development Programme between January 23-27, 2012 at Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-K) on “Data Analysis for Management Research”. The participants were from VIT University, Anna University, JP University and Thapar University. The program had 25 participants with cross functional backgrounds in management representing Marketing, Human Resources and Finance areas, pursuing their doctoral program. The workshop included data analysis using software like SPSS 20, AMOS, STATR, GRETL.

• Prof. Sankalpa Bhattacharjee's paper on the theme India's Competitive Edge in IT Services: An Investigation has been published in the Proceedings of UGC Sponsored National Level Seminar titled Indian Economy: The last two decades, by the Department of Economics, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur Math, Howrah, West Bengal. • Prof. Sankalpa Bhattacharjee has been invited to present a paper jointly with Professor Debkumar Chakrabarti at a Conference organised by Department of Economics, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira (Belur, West Bengal) in association with Bangiya Arthaniti Parishad to be held on 2-3 March, 2012. • Prof. Shridhar Aithal Presented a paper in the International conference on Business Intelligence, Analytics & Knowledge Management (BIAKM-2012), held at IBS Hyderabad by the department of Operations & IT during 19-20 April 2012. The conference had attracted about 80 papers and only 39 were selected. The participants from USA, Middle East and Indonesia were present. • Prof. Shridhar Aithal delivered a Technical Talk at the National Conference on Information Science on 27th & 28th April at Manipal Center for Information Science, Manipal. Prof. Aithal also chaired a session. It was well attended by many representatives from industry and academic fraternity from ISB-Hyd, CSIR-New Delhi etc. Future opportunities for MIP and Research collaboration were discussed. • Prof. Shridhar Aithal attended an international conference hosted by Computer Society of India (CSI) Bangalore Chapter in conjunction with industry partners, on Advances in Cloud Computing between July 26-28, 2012. It was well attended by many from industry and academia from India, Australia, Singapore, Canada and Europe. The highlight of the conference was the keynote addresses by personalities like: Prof Sadagopan from IIITB, Sri Vidyashankar IAS, Chief Secretary to Government of Karnataka, Prof Raj Buyya from Melborne University AU, Rajiv Ranjan from CISRO AU, Prof Muzumdar from Carleton University, Canada etc. The conference was preceded by a daylong workshop on the impacts of Cloud Computing on Businesses in the world. It was a technical conference however with a business context. Dr. Aithal had a poster presentation on a application of cloud computing for a healthcare information system for India. It was coincidental that many speakers highlighted the need for paying special attention to home grown solutions to India. With the feedback received on the poster, Dr. Aithal was encouraged to continue as a journal paper.

• Prof. A S Vasudev Rao presented a paper on 'Opportunity Recognition and Venture selection: A study of Small Enterprises in Coastal Karnataka' at the ELLTA (Exploring Leadership and Learning Theories in Asia) International Conference 2012 held at Langkawi, Malaysia from December 11-13, 2012. There were around 80 papers presented in five parallel sessions. New Faculty in TAPMI Family Prof. Aparna Bhat joined in June 2012 as Assistant Professor at TAPMI in the area of General Management and Entrepreneurship. With MA, MPhil in English Linguistics and Literature as well as Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations, she has 19 years of teaching experience. A City & Guilds (London) certified softskills trainer, she has conducted workshops for students, corporate and teachers at various levels. Her research area is communication skills. She has presented many research papers, book chapters and has many publications to her credit.

Prof. Ganes M Pandya, has joined TAPMI as Asstistant Professor in the area of Operations Management in September 2012. He is a Doctorate in Mathematics (Topology) and has an experience of 15 years. He handles subjects like Quantitative Methods for Managers, Operation Research, Modeling with Spreadsheets in TAPMI. Prior to joining TAPMI he was with Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University- Gandhinagar, Gujrat. His interests include subjects like Indian Philosophy, K.P. Astrology and Psychotronic Powers of Mind.

Prof. Kedar Subramanian joined TAPMI as Assistant Professor during December 2012 in the area of IT and Systems area. He is completed B.E. (Computers) and P.G.D.B.A. (Finance, Systems) He has over eleven years experience in industry and academics. In industry he has worked as an I.T. engineer for 3 years and later worked as an IT Business Analyst and IT Project Manager for 2 years and was involved in pre-sales, customization and post implementation support. Prior to joining TAPMI, he was working for as a Systems faculty at MPSTME, NMIMS (Deemed-to-be) University. His area of specilisation is Enterprise IT and Management of Technological Innovation. He has received an award for outstanding paper in the International Research Conference(IRC) conducted by JBIMS, Mumbai University in March 2013. Prof. Kumar Mukherjee joined TAPMI as an Associate Professor in the area of Healthcare Management. Kumar Mukherjee did his B.Pharm from Jadavpur University, Kolkata and his PGDM from TAPMI. After finishing his PGDM, he worked as an Area Sales Manager for TTK Prestige India Limited for 2 years. Then he moved to the USA to pursue higher studies. He completed a MS from the University of Toledo in the area of Pharmacy Administration. Subsequently he finished his PhD from the University of Florida in the area of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy Research. Prior to joining TAPMI, he taught in the department of Pharmacy Practice at the Chicago State University for four years as an Assistant Professor. His primary areas of interest are application of quantitative techniques and microeconomic principles in healthcare management. He regularly presented research posters at the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) annual conference. He taught courses in the areas of Quantitative Techniques, Research Methods, Pharmacoepidemiology, Health Economics and Clinical Literature Evaluation.He has many Research Publications to his credit.

Prof. Sanjay Choudhari is an Assistant Professor at TAPMI in the Operations Management area. He joined institute in April 2012. He is post Graduate in Industrial engineering from VNIT Nagpur and received a PhD (Operations Management) from SJMSOM, IIT Bombay. He has previously worked as Research Associate at IIM Ahmedabad and also worked as Faculty at National Institute of Construction Management and Research (NICMAR) Pune. His research works in the form of papers and cases are published in the international refereed journals. He is also reviewer of journals such as International Journal of Operations & Production Management. He teaches operations and supply chain management related subjects at TAPMI.

Prof. P. Srikanth has joined in September 2012, as Associate Professor in the area of finance. He has Bachelors Degree in Commerce and Post Graduation in Management (MBA) in finance. He did his Doctorate from Karnataka University, Dharwad with his thesis titled “Evolving strategies to popularise the use of credit rating by individuals and institutions A case study of Indian Credit Rating system”. He has completed FDP from IIM, Ahmadabad. He has 8 years of experience in industry and 10 years in academics in reputed institutes. He is SEBI certified Trainer for Financial Literacy. His areas of research interest are Financial Services, Accounting, Financial Management, and Corporate Finance. He has a few book chapters, journal articles, conference papers and case to his credit. He has also participated in a number of MDPs/FDPs organized by various institutions of repute.

Prof. Sushanta Kumar Sarma has joined TAPMI in October 2012 as a Faculty Associate. He specializes in the area of HR and teaches Organization Behavior, Organization Theory. Prior to joining TAPMI, he has worked in non-profit sector for more than four years before pursuing PhD from IRMA.

Prof. Vidya Pratap joined TAPMI in June 2012 as Associate Professor in the area of Managerial Communication. She has 17 years of teaching experience. She has completed M.A., M. Sc. before obtaining her Ph. D. Awards: • Her paper titled, Domestic Waste Management won the 1st prize at the Third National Conference on Population Control and Waste Management, organized by Aravalli Institute of Management, Jodhpur on 24th October, 2004. • She was President of the Lioness Club of Manipal for the year 1996-97. Faculty Development Programme Workshop on the Art of Case writing A Faculty Development Workshop on The Art of Case Writing for Business Education was conducted for the faculty members of TAPMI by Prof. Debapratim Purkayastha of ICMR, Hydrabad on July 20, 2012. The workshop touched upon topics like Basics, Types, collection of Data, Information Sources, Case Triggers, Framing of Objective, Writing & Preparing Teaching Notes. 29

Research Methodology in Management: An Introduction The Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Research Methodology in Management: An Introductionâ&#x20AC;? was organised in the TAPMI campus from 17-19th January 2013 by TAPMI's Research Promotion Committee. The workshop covered various topics ranging from definition of research, literature review and research design. It was primarily meant for early stage researchers, including those who have just started their doctoral work or are planning to do the same. The sessions of the FDP were conducted by various faculty members of TAPMI excepting one session which was conducted by Prof. Sundar Sarukkai from Manipal University. This session was on the art of writing and publishing. The FDP was coordinated jointly by Prof. Sanjay Choudhari and Prof. Sulagna Mukherjee.

The topics covered on the first day were Introduction to Research by Prof. Ajith Kumar, Literature Review by Prof. Animesh Bahadur and Prof. Sanjay Choudhari. The last session of the day was on Research Design taken by Prof. Sulagna Mukherjee and Prof. Sushanta Sarma. The second day began with a session on Psychometry and Scale Development by Prof. Vijaya. The second session of the day was taken by Prof. Kumar Mukherjee who discussed about Sampling. The first session in the post lunch was taken up by Prof. Animesh Bahadur. He discussed the topic of Interview method with the participants. The last session of the day was on case study method. Prof. Sanjay Choudhari handled the same. The third day started with Prof. Sundar Sarukkai session followed by a session on Sampling again by Prof. 30

Kumar Mukherjee. The first session post lunch was taken by Prof. Siva Kumar. He discussed with the participants about the method which should be adopted in order to develop a formal research proposal. The last session of the workshop was devoted to the participant's presentation. Four participants presented their research ideas and received feedback from the audience. The concluding session of the workshop was valedictory and the feedback collection from the participants. Prof. Ajith distributed the certificates to all the participants. The overall feedback was very good and the participants were very happy in the way the workshop was organised. They requested the organising team to have more such FDPs in future.

In all there were 20 participants from various parts of Karnataka and Hyderabad which included faculty members, research scholars, industry person and students. In addition to these, there were four faculty members from TAPMI, namely Prof. Aparna Bhat, Prof. Kedareshwaran S, Prof. Sudeep Kumar and Prof. Vinod Mahadevan who also participated in the workshop as participants. There were some faculty members who were only present for some sessions during the workshop. Lunch and tea was provided during the three days of the session. Apart from this the study material which comprised of the articles given by various faculty members were also given to the participants. Smart ways to Publish Good Research Journals Prof. Sundar Bharadwaj, Professor of Marketing, Goizueta Business School, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, USA and Prof. Anandhi Bharadwaj, Associate Professor of Information Systems and Operations

Management, Goizueta Business School, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, USA visited TAPMI. They had a brief interaction with the faculty on the topic 'Smart Ways to publish in Good Research Journals'. Dr R C Natarajan, Director & Deans were present.

Harvard Business School Workshop Prof. Rajiv Shah and Prof. Vrishali Bhat participated in the Harvard Business School work shop organised at IIM Bangalore. HBS along with CRSI & IIM-B hosted a 3 day workshop on Participant Centered Learning in January 2013. The course schedule is attached. The contents of the workshop as well as the outcome of discussions, which included a lot of comparisons between the Harvard style of teaching and the Indian style, are synopsized as under. The sessions for the initial 2 days were led by Prof. V G Narayanan (HBS). The discussions related to :

However due care must be taken to ensure that no personal remarks are passed nor any disrespect is exhibited towards any student/his views. The solution/answer to the problem must emerge from the students and not from the faculty. Even if otherwise the faculty must desist from providing ideal answers/solutions. • Evaluation - HBS evaluates students based on class participation and exams (50% each). Exams may be open book or closed book at faculty discretion. Students are sometimes allowed to write exams from home. • Case Writing - Generally cases which have a dilemma/problem are better though illustrative cases also may serve a limited purpose. Cases based entirely on secondary data may be published without the permission of the organization. However all data/quotes etc. must be appropriately referenced.

• Choosing appropriate cases Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the basic concepts. Cases were to be used to illustrate an application of those concepts to resolving a management problem.

Permission from the appropriate authority must be obtained a priori if cases are written based on primary data.

• Pre class preparation Students are expected to devote up to 2-3 hours to prepare in groups for the case. This involves reading any other supplementary/technical notes distributed with the case.

During the last day the sessions focused on critiquing a teaching note, student-teacher relationship in the Indian (parental) context. The last session by Prof Ravichandran gave an interesting viewpoint of a case (an excerpt from a book) which looked simple at first glance.

Each student takes an oath that (s)he would come to class prepared, maintain academic integrity/ethics. • Faculty Role/Responsibility In order to maintain an equitable balance amongst different courses wrt the off class preparation time each faculty has to ensure that case and/or other material did not need more than 2-3 hours of preparation time. The same case was taught across various sections by different faculty. So before the term all faculty met and discussed their class plan and board plans in detail. During the entire course faculty ensured that each student was called upon equally to answer/ participate in the discussions. The role of the faculty is to facilitate the discussions by calling upon various students to explain/critique. The faculty may question the student's analysis.

Workshop on Health Financing Prof. Rishi Kesav Ram and Prof. Kumar Mukherjee along with Second year Students of PGDM-Healthcare participated in the Workshop on Health Financing, organized by Department of Community Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal during 27-29, June 2012. The resource person was Prof. Sundari Ravindran deliberating on topics like Health Economics, Catastrophic Health expenditure, Health Insurance schemes in India, existing PPP models in India and High Level Expert Group recommendations on Universal Health Coverage.

AACSB Seminar on AoL AACSB organized a Two day Seminar on Assurance of Learning (AoL) at Casablanca-Morocco on 22-23 February, 2013. This seminar was co-hosted by ESCA, Casablanca, Morocco. Prof M Durga Prasad and Prof. Chowdari Prasad participated in the seminar representing TAPMI. The important points and takeouts from the seminar were, there were 32 participants, hailing from different parts of the world who represented 15 countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, France, Ireland, Korea, Belgium, Germany and Finland. The seminar was facilitated by Dr Ms. Kathryn Martell, Dean, College of Business from Central Washington University. Learning the language of assessment is critical to the effective implementation and maintenance of an AoL program. Dr. Kathryn Martell gave insights about

Assessment Process, AoL standards, Establishing Learning goals, Translating Goals into Observable Learning Objectives and Assessment Methods on day one. She has discussed topics like Curriculum Alignment, Reporting results and Closing loop on day two. Furthermore seminar facilitator Dr. Kathryn Martell stressed on the importance of faculty involvement in assessment process and she has suggested that faculty should be part of the assessment process. This seminar explained the assessment process, with an emphasis on direct measures of student performance. It has given some insights on the design of a functional pilot assessment plan based on business school's vision and mission as also student learning measurement process and to some extent rubric development. This Assessment seminar has thrown more light on the basic terminologies, techniques and tactics to help successfully navigate through assessment.

Foreign Professors at TAPMI • Prof. Vijay Marisetty of RMIT University, Australia visited us on December 26. He taught Portfolio Management Course to the second year PGP students. Prof Vijay has held academic positions at ISB- Hyderabad, Monash University and IIM Bangalore and has published extensively in good journals. • Prof. Madhu Veeraraghavan of Monash University, Australia, presented a paper entitled “National Culture and Corporate Cash Holdings around the World” on January 2, 2013. • Prof. Chonmoy Ghosh, Professor of Finance at University of Connecticut, Storrs, USA addressed the PGP 1 students on January 7, 2013.

Delivering Shared Value: New Responsibility for Managers A special session with Prof. Sundar Bharadwaj was conducted where the distinguished guest spoke to our 2nd year PGDM students on 'Delivering Shared Value: New Responsibilities for Managers'. The session touched upon issues of Corporate Social Responsibility in organizations with specific company examples. He also spoke about the importance of upholding shared values. The session concluded with a lively discussion between the students and the guest with a few lighter moments. Overall, it was a learning experience for the students.

Latest Developments in IT Systems Management Education

Gopalakrishnan, the principal of Welcome group school of hotel administration gave his introduction.

A guest lecture by Prof. Anandi Bharadwaj was organized on the topic -"Latest Developments in ITSystems Management Education". She being a professor from IT, gave the students an insight into how the IT systems management is evolving today. The latest developments and practices which she spoke about included Cloud computing and specialized expert systems. She said that the world IT market is evolving and managing them would be one of the major challenges in itself. She ended by indicating that adequate training and knowhow would be the major key factor for success in this industry.

He started off by giving off an introduction of the web and its advent and how it developed. He followed it up with development of social media, GPS and augmented reality. He talked about how everybody now is focusing on mobiles. How bandwidth is important for portable internet. He threw light on weak and strong ties in interpersonal relationships and structural holes theory, which says that the more the structural holes in your network the more value you can create.

Impact of Social media on hospitality and travel marketing

Dr. Srikanth Beldona is an Assistant Professor of Hospitality Marketing and E-commerce at the University of Delaware, addressed the students today on the Impact of Social media on hospitality and travel marketing. He earned his Ph.D. from Purdue University, where his dissertation focused on Online Travel Purchase Behaviour. His research is largely in the areas of Travel Internet Marketing, Hospitality Marketing, Perceived Fairness and Perceived Value. He has over fifty refereed articles and his papers have appeared in the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, Journal of Travel Research, Tourism Management, and International Journal of Hospitality Management among others. He was the Guest Editor for the Journal of Hospitality and Leisure Marketing's 2008 special issue titled "The Impact of Technology on the Marketing of Hospitality and Travel Services". He was also recently appointed Executive Editor of the newly announced Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Technology from Emerald Publishing. Ms. Paru

He entertained the audience with some not so well known stories of youtube and other social media. He bought about a comparison between the Google and Facebook and how each of them is good in their own fields. He also talked about the dynamics of what to measure, the involvement, intimacy interaction and influence of a webpage. He talked about clout and web analytics and how it impacts influence. He told some stories of the power of Social media in hospitality and how these presentations had huge impact all through emails. Finally he showed the audience online reputation building software which shows a dashboard of the overall rating, sentiment analysis, positive and negative trending sentiments and other such features which help manage a company's reputation. This software will help ease a company's work easily.

New Staff in TAPMI family Mr. Balachandra U N joined TAPMI in the month of August 2012 as an Academic Assistant. He is a graduate in Commerce from Mangalore University and holds an M.Com in Finance from Karnataka Open University. He brings with him almost 10 years of professional experience in the various areas of Accounts, Store & Purchase. Prior to joining TAPMI, he worked as an Examination Incharge at Srinivas School of Engineering, Surathkal, Mangalore.

Mr. Bharath Kulal joined TAPMI as Technical Trainee in IT Departments in August. He has completed his Diploma in Electronics & Communication from Dr. T M A Pai Polytechnic, Manipal. He has no prior experience and his first job.

Mr. Binoy Nair has joined as Business Development Manager in August 2012. He has completed his MBA and has over 9 years of experience. He has worked at ICICI Bank, ICFAI before joining TAPMI. He is based out of Stock Holding Corporation of India (SHCIL) complex, Mahape, Mumbai.

Mr. Jayakrishna H.R joined the Institute on 2nd July,2012 as Manager-Administration and Finance. He holds Masters in Commerce with specialization in Banking, Masters in Arts (Economics), Masters in Business Administration (HRM) and C.A (Inter). He brings with him more than 25 years of managerial, teaching, training and consultancy experience of having worked with both private and government sectors. Prior to joining at TAPMI, he was with NITK-Science & Technology Entrepreneurs' Park, Surathkal, as Administration Cum- Finance Officer for 17 years, added to this, he was the Adjunct faculty in the Humanities, Social Science & Management Department of National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal. Faculty Staff Retreat A Retreat was organized by TAPMI for the Faculty and Staff members with their family at River Tern Lodge at Bhadra, Lakkavali, Jungle Resort area(near Shimoga/NR Pura), The venue was about 152 kms from the campus and took about 4 hours to reach by road. It was enjoyable as the venue had lot of places of Interest such as Bhadra Dam, Wild life sanctuary that has a Safari, Boat Ride, Water Sports at the reservoir on Tunga River. Director, Deans, Faculty members and Staff members enjoyed the retreat accompanied with their respective families during April-May 2012. This was coordinated by Prof. Jaims.

30th T A Pai Memorial Lecture (Founder's Day) Every year, TAPMI organises a lecture on the Birth Anniversary of our Founder, Shri. Tonse Ananth Pai. This event is organised to acknowledge the contribution of Padma Bhushan awardee Shri. T. A. Pai who laid the cornerstone of TAPMI over 30 years ago and his vision, which was intended to give back to the society and to create employment opportunities. On this occasion thought leaders and Eminent Citizens from different sections of society share their vision, expertise with the students of TAPMI and other Manipal Institutions, to inspire them in the quest for building a great Nation. An awards ceremony is also held at the event where, Chairman of TAPMI Governing Council recognizes Long Service Employees of TAPMI who complets 10 and 20 years at the institute.

He delivered the 30th T A Pai Memorial Lecture, to commemorate the 90th birth Anniversary of TAPMI's founder, the great visionary, Padma Bhushan awardee Shri. T. A. Pai. Shri Hegde started by delving into the history of the Indian republic, and how our founding fathers envisaged the new country to be in the future. He charted the exact chronology of the formation of the Indian constitution, from its establishment to its final adoption. He described the roles and responsibilities of the three pillars of the constitution, the legislature, the executive and the judiciary, thereby laying the context and the foundation for his lecture, â&#x20AC;&#x153;What is left of democracy in Indiaâ&#x20AC;?. Justice Hegde, started off with the examples of various misdemeanors that have happened in the Indian legislature in the recent past. Reciting a few anecdotes, he not only illustrated the apathy that has seeped into our legislature but also the increasing instances of corruption and the criminalization. He recalled the instances of the absence of 34 Members of Parliament from the question hour, after they had submitted questions. He also highlighted the growing instances of some MPs with serious criminal records (One in 13 Parliamentarians, according to Justice Hegde) and the

Justice Hegde however did not restrict himself only to the legislature and the executive. He did not spare the institution that he served with great distinction for over 40 years, the judiciary. He underscored the importance of the judiciary in today's times by terming it as the savior when the executive fails. He however lamented the fall in the standards of probity of the Indian judiciary and quoted the recent cases of some high court judges resigning to avoid facing impeachment, the CBI investigation of 34 judges in the Allahabad high court and the case of a judge conducting a contempt of court proceedings on a railway platform on account of the denial of a railway berth, to back his assertion. He also expressed concern at the judge to citizen ratio in India and the inordinate delays in the delivery of justice to a common citizen. Justice Hegde concluded his enlightening lecture, by recognizing the growing role of the media as a moral and an ethical watchdog by terming it as the unofficial fourth pillar of the constitution. He underscored the importance of probity in today's media lest it has a 37

disastrous effect on the functioning of the democracy. However, inspite of the cracks in the structure of our constitution, Justice Hegde asserted that the democracy was the best form of governance for our country and expressed hope and optimism that it will lead us to a bright future.

TAPMI Silver Jubilee Leadership Lecture Series TAPMI, a member of extended family of Manipal Group of Institutions was set up in early 80's by the visionary leader Padmabhushan Sri. Tonse Ananth Pai. The Institute completed 25 years of its existence and to commemorate this land mark achievement, started a Leadership Lecture Series in 2009. TAPMI Introduced the series of Leadership Lectures as part of its Silver Jubilee Celebrations (1984-2009) by inviting eminent personalities and thought leaders for addressing the young prospective managers of TAPMI as also the academic fraternity in and around Manipal on matters of contemporary nature. On this occasion thought leaders from different sections of society share their vision, expertise and achievements with the students of TAPMI and other Manipal Institutions, to inspire them to take leadership roles in the quest for building a great Nation. 13th Leadership Lecture by Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman 'Does India need good politicians or good political parties?' The 13th Leadership Lecture at T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), Manipalwas delivered by Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, the National Spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The function started with a brief introduction of the speaker by Professor Vinod Madhavan, TAPMI. Dr Ramdas M Pai, Chancellor of Manipal University, presided over the function. Dr. K. Ramnarayan, Vice-Chancellor, Manipal University explained about the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Silver Jubilee Lecture Seriesâ&#x20AC;?, while Dr R C Natarajan, Director- TAPMI set the tone for discussion.

The topic for this Leadership Lecture was - 'Does India need good politicians or good political parties?'. Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman brought out the definition of a politician by quoting distinguished statesmen like Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln. She quoted that India, like every other country, needs good politicians and good political parties. A good politician contributes to his/her political party, which further results in good nation building. She reminded the audience that it is we, the citizens who nurture vision and this description becomes critical. There were thought-provoking questions from the students, which kept the speaker engaged throughout the discussion. Questions ranged from whether the political system was at fault or if it provided any valuable contribution to the country. The students expressed the deep anguish held by the population against politicians and the political system at large. There is a general perception prevalent that the political system, politicians and the political parties have failed. To this, the speaker responded that it was a collective failure of all three and no one factor could be singled out. Smt. Sitharaman insisted that Public opinion is very critical for democracy and has a huge weight in decision making. However, it is required to assess the position of the opinion, and the extent to which it can be analysed to take a stand. She threw light on the continued efforts of BJP towards the Lokpal Bill, and the diluted opinion which is withholding the bill from being passed. Professor Aparna Bhat, TAPMI proposed a vote of thanks. This Leadership lecture righteously stood out prominent with deep insights and value additions.

12th Leadership Lecture: January 12, 2013 Shri K C Jani, Executive Director, IDBI Bank Ltd., Mumbai, delivered lecture on on January 12, 2013 at TAPMI on “How to be a Successful Leader in Life”

Keeping in line with its mission of providing excellence in post graduate management education and exposing its students to the best from the industry, T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), Manipal organized the 12th leadership lecture in its campus environs on Saturday the Jan 12. The guest of honour for the evening was Shri KC Jani, Executive Director, IDBI Bank Ltd, who shared his wisdom on “How to be a successful Leader in life” with the enthusiastic young student community of TAPMI. And going by the tremendous response from the 300 plus students present in the auditorium, the lecture was a resounding success. Shri KC Jani, a very successful leader in his own right, strayed away from the modalities of a traditional lecture, and adopted the role of raconteur. Peppering his perspective of leadership with anecdotes from history, he ensured rapt attention of all the people present in the hall. He focused on the qualities that a person has to cultivate, in order to become a successful leader in life. He touched base on the importance of every one of them and backed them with examples from the real world to underline its criticality. First and foremost for a leader, according to Shri Jani, was the inherent ability to take risks. Without the risk taking ability, he stated, there is no difference between a leader and a follower. However, he also stated that risks have to be measured and calculated and always have to for the greater good. Also, according to Shri Jani, the ability to think beyond the normal was very important for a leader. Quoting the life and times of the great personality like Narayana Murthy in this regard, he said, how his vision single handedly lead to the creation of Infosys. 40

Other important aspects of great leader, according to him were patience, adaptability, flexibility and the ability to lead from the front. He underscored its importance by quoting instances from the lives of Dhirubhai Ambani, Nelson Mandela, Sonia Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw and Sardar Vallabahai Patel. And last but not the least, he emphasized the importance of physical fitness for a leader, which was in addition to the mental fortitude. To substantiate this and enthuse the young audience, he also referred to passionate artists like Dev Anand, Clint Eastwood, Zorabai, Gangubai, et al. The invigorating lecture was followed by an interesting question and answer session which touched upon the styles of leadership and the inherent conflict between leadership and traditional Indian values of contentment and sacrifice, which was handled with aplomb. All in all, it was a great evening for the students of TAPMI, who had much to learn on the 150th birth anniversary of One India's greatest leaders, Swami Vivekananda, and January 12 was declared by the Government of India as National Youth Day. Earlier, Dr AS Vasudev Rao, Director-in-charge and Dean (Administration) welcomed the audience and Prof Chowdari Prasad, Dean (Branding & Promotions) introduced the Speaker.

11th Leadership Lecture: October 10, 2012 Ms Shobana Radhakrishna and Shri Ravi Chopra enlighten TAPMIans on 'Ethical Leadership and Values in Management Based on the Ideology of Mahatma Gandhi' Ms Shobana Radhakrishna, Eminent Citizen, Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India and Shri Ravi Chopra, Founder Secretary, Centre for Gandhian Vision and Values, New Delhi delivered an inspiring leadership lecture on 'Ethical Leadership and Values in Management Based on the Ideology of Mahatma Gandhi' to the students of T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), Manipal. This lecture, organized by TAPMI, is the eleventh in its unique Leadership Lecture Series which is an initiative taken during the Silver Jubilee year 2009, to nurture future leaders by providing a platform to the young business minds to interact with the great leaders of today. Dr. Shantaram (Trustee and Member of TAPMI's Governing Council) and Professor Chowdari Prasad (Dean of Branding & Promotions) were also on the dais. The audience consisted of post graduate management students and faculty of TAPMI besides invitees and press personnel.

The event started with the traditional lighting of the lamp, followed by a warm welcome of the dignitaries and an introductory speech by Professor Chowdari Prasad. Dr. Shantaram, delivering his presidential remarks, spoke on the importance of the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi, in this era. He spoke of the significance of the word 'Mahatma' and the reasons why we should remember him every day and not just on one day in a year the 2nd October. Ms Shobana Radhakrishna opined that Gandhiji's life was an epic of faith and endeavour. In his quest of truth, he came across two aspects: truth is God and everyone has an element of goodness within themselves. She spoke of the wretched incident assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, that occurred 65 years ago; yet, it is now, in this era that the 'Gandhian era' will, and, has to start. She showed the audience a few disturbing pictures of violence all over followed by and contrasting with some inspirational and heart touching pictures of kindness. She spoke about the life of Gandhiji; how he started and ended his day with prayers - that were conducted in the open sky and paid respects to all religions. She believed that Gandhiji considered time as more valuable than money, and she thanked the audience for giving her time to deliver this inspiring speech today. The audience was privileged to have a brief glance of the simple life led by Gandhiji as narrated by the eminent citizen Ms Shobana Radhakrishna. Gandhiji's quest was the quest for truth. His truth was not clouded by the fear of society. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is wrong to think that business is incompatible with ethics. I know that it is perfectly possible to carry on one's business profitably, and yet

honestly and truthfullyâ&#x20AC;? said Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the Father of our Nation. She said that his faith in the people in India is what sustained him. She also threw light on Gandhiji's HindSwaraj and about how he used to be positive even under difficult circumstances and never lost hope; rising above personal sorrows and happiness and sharing happiness and sorrows of others about how he looked at life holistically and worked with utmost concentration. She went on to explain how his efficiency, sincerity, avoidance of negligence, delegation of task to the right person, attention to the minute details, concentration, and honesty with positive confidence brought about positive strength in him. He was a great listener and had the ability to see a human being as a human being without any titles. He had an ever growing and progressive personality. This, Ms. Radhakrishna says, is what integrates and correlates in today's corporate management world as well. Mr. Ravi Chopra, who followed the speech gave a brief introduction on Gandhiji. He spoke as to how great leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Pope John Paul II, the 14th Dalai Lama, Albert Einstein, Barack Obama, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and the like, were influenced by Gandhiji and his teachings. He also showed clippings depicting how Gandhi has influenced anyone and everyone including several Nobel Laureates, be it famous personalities or people in prison. The leadership lecture concluded with a prayer followed by an interactive question answer session. Prof. Vinod Madhavan, TAPMI, delivered the vote of thanks.

10th Leadership Lecture: September 29, 2012 Dr. Anil Menon, addresses students of TAPMI on “Transforming Nation with Passion” Dr. Anil Menon, President of Globalization and Smart+Connected Communities, Cisco Systems Inc. delivered 10th leadership lecture on “Transforming Nations with Passion” at TAPMI. Dr. Menon began his speech by giving insights on some of the aspects that differentiates a developed country from a developing country. Healthcare, education, sports, entertainment are some of the industries in which we can observe major differences. Lack of institutions, structure, business enterprises, and technology in the developing countries are some of the reasons that contribute to these differences, he observed.

Dr. Menon went on to say that the job of business leaders is to fix these differences by exploring the huge opportunities that exist today for creating new industries within the country and around the world. He says developing countries need new cities which can be built by taking urban services to rural areas. Emphasizing the role of technology in the form of internet and cloud services, Dr. Menon said 'The internet is expanding from an information

superhighway to a platform that is transforming the world'. By Leveraging technology, transformative business models in the field of Healthcare and Education can be built. 'Telepresence' is one such technology used by Cisco. He shared the statistics of the cost of computing, storage and bandwidth from the year 1992 to 2008 and showed how it has come down drastically. He also said that mobile internet is pervasive and that internet will be all around us. He said that videos will play a major role in information flow in the future. Cisco initiated home project called Samudayain, uses technology for building a Healthcare center in which patients are seen via telemedicine. Technology is also used in schools in the form of remote classroom sessions. By comparing the investments made in the R&D of various industries, he says the only way to transform industry is by having a visionary leadership, smart regulations, public-private partnerships and new innovation ecosystems. He concluded his speech by saying that these transformations cannot be achieved without passion. The lecture concluded on an enriching note as students exchanged their ideas with Dr. Menon. Earlier, Dr RC Natarajan, Director TAPMI welcomed the gathering while Dr HS Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University presided over the function. Few topics that were covered were, Customer engagement management, Interpersonal orientations and profiling, World class customer centric organisations etc.

UGC Sponsored National Conference Dr. A. S. Vasudev Rao, Dean Administration, was invited by the Director SDM College of Business Management, (Post Graduate Centre for Management Studies and Research) Mangalore to speak on ”Impact of Privatization of Management Education-Its issues“ in a National Conference organized on 4th January, 2013, by the Institute under the sponsorship of UGC. Over 80 participants attended the session which was chaired by Mr M R Vasudeva, Ex Director, Airport Authority of India, Mangalore.

MDP on Handling Problem Customers Blue Ocean Strategy Workshop conducted during May 2-4, 2012 at Delhi CRICT, New Delhi, partners of TAPMI in promotion of Blue Ocean Strategy concept in India, organized a three day workshop on Blue Ocean Strategy for senior executives of corporate concerns of NCR region. As the program was co-hosted by TAPMI in terms of administrative and marketing support to CRICT, in order to represent TAPMI, and build the network for the institute, I attended the program at Delhi. The program was attended by 27 participants on the first day and 12 participants for the complete three days program; coming from different sectors and walks of life. Dr. Robert Bong conducted the program across the three days, splitting the first day as a one day curtain raiser seminar and leading the next two days as handson workshop with simulation exercises on understanding the differences in competitive strategy and blue ocean strategy and finally leading the participants in designing the blue ocean strategy framework for a given business. I had participated in few sessions outlining the research initiatives on BOS and the Certification Process for BOS Professionals, besides involving in simulation exercises.

A Two day workshop was organised on “Handling Problem Customers” on February 20 & 21, 2013 at SHCIL Training center, Mahape - Navi Mumbai. The workshop was conducted by Director, Dr. R C Natarajan and Prof. Vinod Madhavan. In all 16 participants were part of the program. They were from LIC, SIDBI, NSE, SHCIL and State Bank of Mauritius.

The work shop covered major topics like, CustomerProblem Typologies, Corporate and Retail CustomersProblems & Issues, Winning Sales Presentation, Negotiation, Planning & Execution, Handling Cutomer Conflict and a session on Self assessment. 45

Prof. Raghunath Rudran session to L & T Executives L&T Mysore C-TEA on Aug 2, 2012 • Prof. Raghunath Rudran handled a one day programme for Graduate Engineering Trainees of L&T (Larsen &Toubro), in the area of Project Management, at the L&T C-TEA (L&T Center for Technological and Engineering Applications), Mysore campus on 02.08.2012. The engineers will be later posted to various sites of L&T, including gulf countries, where they will be involved in various project management activities. The programme covered various topics such as Overview of Project

Management stages, understanding the nature of projects, what differentiates project management from other management, Project Manager's roles and responsibilities, Work Break down structure, Networking Techniques, crashing, probabilistic approach to activity time estimation, use of beta distribution and normal distribution to estimate probability of project completion in a given time, etc. All this is expected to enable the GETs to perform better during Project Monitoring and Execution.

This is part of a Programme for Young Executives of L&T. The day long session conducted by Prof. Raghunath Rudran takes them through descriptive statistics, concepts of probability, probability distributions, decision trees and simulation. Part of the programme is run on hands on Pallisade tools such as Stattools and Precision Trees. The Young Executives are Level 1 managers of L& T with upto 10 years of experience. They have work experience in diverse areas such as Ports, Tunnels and Special Bridges, Nuclear Construction, Metro

construction, Defense, Elevated Corridors and Railway Constructions. They have worked on a multitude of challenging projects, and have accumulated substantial project management experience skills. The programme seeks to enhance their knowledge base with a strong theoretical foundation. They are expected to apply these skills in their day to day work at L&T. Prof. Raghunath Rudran is doing this programme for the sixth time for L&T IPM. This is the first time for Level 1 managers, and also a first time at the Chennai location of L&T IPM. "

"Quantitative Toolkit for Young Executives of L&T", Baroda • Prof. Raghunath Rudran completed a two day session (eight hours each, on Jan 4, and Jan 5, 2013) on "Quantitative Toolkit for Executives of L&T". This is part of a Programme for Executives of L&T. Prof. Raghunath Rudran had been regularly conducting one day sessions for the L&T Executives, and this is the first time that a two day programme is being conducted. The two eight hour sessions conducted by Prof.Raghunath Rudran takes them through descriptive statistics, concepts of probability, probability distributions, decision trees and simulation. Part of the programme is run on hands on Pallisade tools such as Stattools, Precision Tree and RISK, and examples of real scenarios where such tools are applied, are discussed.

International Conference on Banking and Finance: Aug 9-11, 2012 in Bangalore TAPMI, organized a 3-day International Conference on Banking and Finance held at Hotel Atria, Bangalore from 9th to 11th August 2012. It was organized by the Centre for Research in Banking and Finance (CRBF) headed by Prof. S. R. Vishwanath. The centre is funded by AICTE, country's regulator for management education. The Chair and the co-Chair of the conference were Prof S.R Vishwanath and Prof Sulagna Mukherjee, faculty 48

members in the area of Economics and Finance. The Conference was attended by Student representatives from Finance Forum, Faculty Members of Finance and Economics Area, Scholars and Academicians from various Indian and Foreign Universities as also Management Institutes, Officials from Reserve Bank of India and top functionaries from the industry.

The programme committee of the Conference included eminent academicians like Prof. P. Raghavendra Rau from Cambridge, Prof. Shantaram P. Hegde of University of Connecticut, Prof. Anand Srinivasan, of National University of Singapore, Prof. Latha Shanker of Concordia University, Canada and Prof. Vijaya Marisetty (RMIT). Several papers from different corners of the world were received by the Committee. After a rigorous review process, 19 papers were finally selected for the Conference. Out of these, 13 of them were from scholars who are working in reputed Universities in US, Canada, Australia, France and Singapore. The topics for presentation in the Conference included Corporate Governance, Banking, Asset Pricing, IPOs, Futures Markets, and Venture Capital, to name a few. The keynote address for the Conference was delivered on day one, by Prof. Jay Ritter. He is Cordell Eminent Scholar, Warrington College of Business, University of Florida, USA. He spoke in general about the relation between stock market investment and the economic growth of the country. In this context, he tried to bring in a cross country perspective to the discussion. A Paper on Linear Beta Pricing with Inefficient Benchmarks was presented by Prof. David Feldman University of New South wales, Australia, co-authored by Prof. George Dicogiannis, Greece.

In the next two days, eminent scholars presented their work before the audience and there were discussions and suggestions given to each one of them by the Discussants and the participants. Prof. Vijaya Marisetty from RMIT, did present four papers (the highest) which he co-authored with scholars from different universities. Two faculty members from TAPMI namely Prof S R Vishwanath and Prof. Kushankur Dey also presented their work in the conference. Their papers were titled as “The value of unaffiliated analyst recommendations before the IPO: Evidence from Indian IPOs” and “Investigation of informational efficiency of India's coffee futures” respectively. Two research scholars working in the finance area from IIM Bangalore and IIT Kharagpur also presented their papers. Their papers were quiet well received and they were given suggestions to improve their research work.

The three day conference concluded on 11th August 2012 with the valedictory and awards ceremony. There were three categories of awards, given to the best paper in regular category, to the doctoral scholar and the best reviewer award. There were two recipients in the first category. Prof. Raghavendra Rau from Cambridge University won the award for his paper titled “Initial Public Debt Offerings” and Prof Vijaya Marisetty won for “ Private Placements to Owner Managers: Theory and Evidence”. The best paper in the doctoral student category went to Mr. Narahari Hansoge from IIM Bangalore for the paper titled “Economic transition and the value of Business group affiliation: Evidence from Indian market”. The best reviewer award went to Prof. Shantaram P. Hegde from University of Connecticut. The programme committee members were also presented with mementos as a token of appreciation. All the awards and mementos were given away by Dr R C Natarajan, Director of TAPMI. 49

National Conference on Managerial Excellence through Indian Ethos Students and Faculty members of T. A. Pai Management Institute, Manipal, participated in the conference on 'Managerial Excellence through Indian Ethos' at the Institute campus on Feb 8, 2013. The conference had eminent speakers from various fields spanning Management Education, Governance, Manufacturing Sector, etc. Director, Dr. R. C. Natarajan shed light on the values of Indian ethos. Following him was Dr.H.Vinod Bhat, Pro Vice Chancellor of Manipal University who glorified the Indian heritage and gave his views on how we should implement the same in our day to day lives. The next speaker was Mr. R. Seshasayee, Executive Vice Chairman of Ashok Leyland Ltd and also the Chairman of IndusInd Bank Limited. He spoke on how the Indian Values have evolved over generations and it is currently perceived by the Indian youth. Mr. Suresh, DirectorFinance, AICTE delivered a special guest lecture on Indian Management. Two books were launched during the ceremony. The first one was a Compendium titled “Managerial Excellence through Indian Ethos”, which is a collection of 12 articles. The second book titled “Rewind Pause Start” penned by Dr. A.V. Rajagopalan, rewinds into the 5000 year old heritage texts of India to cull out pearls of wisdom for the current managers. The next speaker was Dr. Radhakrishnan Pillai, author of the well known book 'Corporate Chanakya'. He is the founder of Chanakya Institute of Public Leadership. He shared his extensive research on Chanakya's Arthashastra. He stressed on the power of intellect by quoting Chanakya, “One arrow may not kill the enemy. But a man using his sharpened intellect can destroy the king along with his kingdom”. He also told that, “Continuous study ensures a trained intellect, from intellect comes practical application and from practical application results self-possession”. The next speaker was Dr.Subhash Sharma. He has obtained his PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad and PhD from University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He is the author of the path breaking books like Western Windows Eastern Doors and Market's Maya. Dr.Sharma shed light on the Indian National Emblem and how the four lions represent the four forces which shape ourcountry. He gave insights on the basket of needs, modes of thinking and the model of deeds. 50

Following Dr. Sharma was Dr. N. Jayasankaran. He is currently Professor Emeritus at NMIMS, Mumbai and is the former Director of Bharatidasan Institute of Management Trichy. He spoke on the importance of controlling one's mind through breath, and stressed on the importance of meditation and Pranayama. He quoted, “The ability of a good manager is to develop the competencies of people who are along with the manager”. He emphasized on the fact that the Indian Ethos runs deep in every Indian's blood, and it cannot be replicated. Reverend Father Dr. Allan Samuel Pallana, who teaches Social Ethics in United Theological College, Bangalore explained the linkage between Economics, Ecology and ecumenism. Dr. Allan explained the fact that Colonialism has taken the resources from us and the foreign powers are now selling what they took from us at a premium. He also underlined the fact that, “Any organization is a success because of its human resources and not because of technology”. The final speaker of the day was Dr. G. Shreekumar Menon. Dr. Menon is the Commissioner of Customs, Central Excise & Service Tax (Appeals) in Panjim, Goa. Dr. Menon took the concept of aeronautics and established the impact of the Indian scriptures on the Societal, Educational and Technical excellence in the field of aeronautics. He also gave examples of how western civilizations still referred to ancient India as an “Abode of Heaven”. He stressed on the fact that we need not go anywhere to gain excellence; everything is available in India's glorious scriptures. Dr. V. Vijaya proposed the Vote of thanks and all the dignitaries were felicitated.

K K Pai National Award for Excellence in Banking 2012-13 TAPMI witnessed the presentation of K K Pai National Award for Excellence in Banking 2012 2013 to Padmabhushan Awardee Sri K V Kamath, Chairman, ICICI Bank and Infosys. K K Pai Trust presents the K K Pai National Award an award that honours significant bankers. The following dignitaries Dr. Ramdas M Pai Chancellor, Manipal University, Sri T Satish U Pai President, K K Pai Trust, Manipal, Dr. K K AmmannayaSecretary, Dr. R C Natarajan, Director, TAPMI, Manipal and eminent trustees Sri. T Narayan M Pai, Sri. T Ashok M Pai, Sri. K Suresh Pai, Sri. K M Udapa, Sri. H Krishna Bhat, Dr H S Ballal were present for this function. Sri K V Kamath provided a new dimension to Indian banking and spearheaded a revolution in the Indian banking sector. Hailing from Mangalore, Sri. Kamath is an alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He started his career in 1971 at ICICI an Indian financial institution. He rendered several years of service in South East Asia before returning to ICICI as its Managing Director and CEO in 1996. He retired as CMD in April 2009 and took up his present position as Non-Executive Chairman. Sri K V Kamath also took over as Chairman of Infosys in August 2011. The citation was read out and the felicitation was done by Dr H S Ballal. Sri K V Kamath expressed his courteous gratitude on accepting the K K Pai National Award from Dr. Ramdas M Pai. He acknowledged Dr. T M A Pai, Sri. T A Pai and Sri. K K Pai as founders of modern banking.

This event reached its end with the vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Chowdari Prasad, TAPMI. Deciding to interact further with the students of TAPMI, Sri K V Kamath welcomed questions from the young leaders of tomorrow. The insights provided by him proved beneficial to the students of TAPMI and enhanced their understanding of the Indian banking sector.

Book Release A book on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Medical Negligence: What doctors, patients and hospitals should know" authored by Dr P D Shenoy (Retd I.A.S) our Trustees and Governing Council Member was released on November 23, 2012 at a brief function held at Manipal University. Going by the overwhelming response the conference was a resounding success.

Dr Bhat, brought his extensive experience in Healthcare sector to expound on the challenges that India is facing. Highlighting the number of cases of Malaria, Tuberculosis and the high occurrence of maternal Mr Padukone, gave a detailed presentation about the business aspects of the industry. Highlighting its constantly changing nature, he bought out the various challenges faced by the Medical fraternity today. He illustrated how the population growth in the Country will drive the demand in future for the healthcare sector. He explained the prevalence of lifestyle diseases in today's times, the entry of private equity funds in the health industry, the collaboration of real estate companies and hospitals and emergence of medical value travellers from foreign nations, all bode well for the industry in the future. 52

The immensely informative introductory session was followed by an enlightening panel discussion on the challenges that are being faced by the Indian Pharmaceutical industry. Moderated by Prof Vinod Madhavan, the discussion featured stalwarts, both from academics and the industry. The pharmaceutical industry was represented by Mr. Shankar Das, President, Dr Reddy's Labs and Mr Sagar Powar, Senior Consultant, PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Dr Sivakumar, Professor, TAPMI, gave the academic perspective in the discussion. Myriad topics, ranging from generic drugs, changing marketing requirements, exponential growth in Indian rural market to the role of Government and its regulations were debated and discussed. constraints. They not only spoke about the technological impairments amongst the rural population, also elaborated on the challenges faced in terms of the ageing population and resource constraints. A Round table discussion by Women Professionals and Indian Ethos on the topic “Exploring Social and Cultural Challenges and Opportunities of Women at Work” was conducted at TAPMI-CEE, Bangalore. DISHA 2012: HR Conclave Leveraging Technology for Effective HRM September 08 & 09, 2012 â&#x20AC;&#x153;DISHAâ&#x20AC;? which means 'direction' in Sanskrit, stands apt for one of the major events the HR conclave at TAPMI where industry experience meets academic rigor. T.A.Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), Manipal, organized the two-day mega conclave, Disha 2012, centered on the critical corporate function of Human Resources. Declared open by Padma Vibhushan Dr M. S. Valiathan, National Research Professor, Manipal University, the conclave witnessed the participation of eminent HR professionals from major corporates such as Oracle Financial Services, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, Dr Reddy's Labs, Tata Consultancy Services and Nomura Financial services. Chief Guest for the inauguration, Dr Valiathan, mentioned the debilitating problems faced by the country across various sectors. Day 2 The second day consisted of a series of guest lectures by the eminent guests on topics ranging from Strategy implementation and Planning, traits of selfmanagement, etc. The management students were addressed in separate batches who in turn responded enthusiastically. The guest lectures were followed by two events: Expositus - A case presentation event and Vrondi - a mock press event which again saw great participation of the students. Disha 2012 concluded on a high note with the valedictory function where the designer of the logo and winners were honoured and the guests were thanked with all sincerety for making the event a grand success.

The discussion was opened by the Chief Guest, Dr. Manoranjan Sharma, stressing on the paradigm shift in economic reforms part 1991. It was taken forward by Mr. Arijit Mukherjee discussing about the issues on wealth management in India, its transition from its nascent stage in the last ten years and how regulatory bodies like RBI, SEBI have taken the country forward in terms of reforms. Further, Ms. Lavanya Ashok shared her views on investment related issues, FDI and taxation. Mr. Sushil Shah shed light upon the Banking sector's political willingness towards reforms. Mr. Hariprasad shared his opinion on RBI's liberalisation of foreign exchange. Finally Mr. Rohan Mathew shared his outlook on Credit Rating and the transformation of Basel 2 to Basel 3. The same was highlighted by Mr Alex Varghese, who vividly described the growth of his organization from being a 14 member firm to a 9000+ behemoth. He

mentioned how India, initially viewed as centre for cost arbitrage, has metamorphised into a mature service provider for the world. Mr Varghese also talked about the accompanying challenges in this transformation like attrition, inflation, immigration policies and talent crunch and how the industry can effectively combat them. Mr Alex Varghese concluded his session by stressing on the importance of building businesses with the foundation of value systems like humanity, humility and integrity and also how it can be made effective by aligning the workforce to the organization's mission and vision. Mr Varghese was followed by Mr Pratham Hegde, VP of Genpact Analytics who underscored the importance of analytics in today's business world. Not only was his session informative, but the fact that he is an alumni from TAPMI made it all the more interesting. The lecture demystified analytics for the responsive audience and demonstrated the problem solving ability of business analytics. One of the highlights of SummIT 2012, was the session by Sri Vidyashankar, IAS, Principal Secretary to the Government of Karnataka, Ministry of Industry & Commerce. He spoke on the impact of IT in Governance and Environment and how it is affecting the citizens of our country. Taking the example of the various Egovernance initiatives, he described how they have been a mixed bag in terms of success and failure. He described how the Government of India, being one of the largest procurers of goods and services, has a massive need for the implementation of IT in order to increase transparency and improve efficiency. He educated the audience on the nittie gritties of etendering, a component of procurement and how it integrates and improves the transparency in any system. He also cited examples such as Aadhar and how more information leads to greater accountability. However, he also gave examples of certain failures,

which induced dissastisfaction of the stakeholders, thus highlighting the fact, there is still a long way to go. Dr. S Aithal, Area Chair of IT coordinated the event.

Manthan - The Budget Discussion It was an eventful day at TAPMI on Sunday, March 10, 2013 which witnessed one of the intriguing budget discussions by eminent personalities from the world of finance. The Panelists were Mr. Mitesh Thakar (Technical Panel Advisor, ET NOW, CNBC), Mr. Vishwanath J K (Chief Credit Officer, DCB) and CA. Ananthanarayan Pai (Secretary ICAI, Udupi). Manthan 2013 was inaugurated by Prof. Sunil Kumar Parameswaran and Prof. Chowdari Prasad by igniting the lamp. A brief introduction about the event was given by Prof. Parameswaran. He also gave a brief introduction about the budget 2012-13. The discussion began with the analysis presented by CA. Ananthanarayan Pai. The key parameters on which he emphasized were Revenue Deficit, Effective Revenue Deficit, Fiscal Deficit and Primary Deficit among others. He also spoke about the Interest Liabilities faced by the nation to the tune of Rs. 350000 Crores, Repayment of principal due for the next year to the account of Rs. 40000 Crores and Borrowing of not less than Rs. 50,000 Crores. With this, he inferred that India's deficit to be converted into surplus in near future seems unlikely. On the front of fiscal deficit, he further clarified on how have India contained the deficit by reducing the planned expenditure like Infrastructure, Power, Roads etc. to the account of Rs. 96,000 Crores and unplanned expenditure like Interest payments, Subsidies, Defense, Defense (capital). He spoke on some of the proposals given in the Union Budget 2013 regarding Infrastructure tax free bonds, Industrial corridors, FII and FDI and SMEs. Since his 57

primary area of interest is Taxation, he elaborated the tax proposals to a detailed extent. According to him, the super-rich (any person earning an income of more than Rs. 1 Crore) who were earlier taxed at a rate of 30.9% will now be taxed at 33.99%. There are only 42,800 people reported to be in the super-rich category; he questioned the very essence of this new tax proposal. He advised that widening the tax base is a better measure than increasing the tax rate. Further he spoke on the proposed rebate for the salaried people earning less than Rs. 5 Lakhs as a pessimistic amendment. He argued that the new Rajiv Gandhi Scheme which is introduced this year is a restrictive policy as it allows only those investors with income below Rs. 10 lakhs and who do not hold a demat account. Regarding the Housing scheme, he told that a permanent borrowing scheme should be introduced. He also spoke on Real Estate taxation and taxation on agricultural land which according to him is a policy covering only the â&#x20AC;&#x153;crow flightâ&#x20AC;? distance and needs a proper mechanism. He was positive about the Investment amendments and was hopeful of a boost in the investment decision by the investors. He closed his analysis by speaking on the Sec-179 Directors Act, Service Tax and Filing of Tax Returns. The second analysis was presented by Mr. Mitesh Thakar. He started off by explaining the impact of budget on FII, equity investors and rating agencies. He asked the question that how Finance Minister will be able to cut down fiscal deficit. The 2012 budget was focusing on revenue target which for the next year is estimated at Rs. 10,51, 033 Crores. Finance Minister is banking revenue growth at 21%. But the source of this growth is a big question in itself. He further spoke about the surcharge which will help raise Rs. 10,000 Crores. The present revenue deficit is at 5.2%. He emphasized in the fact that if Finance Minister removes the revenues earned by one time transactions, the deficit may shoot up to 5.6%.

He then moved to the sectoral analysis. He started off with the Infrastructure sector which he felt was a favorable move for the people at bottom of pyramid. He felt that the Financial Sector/commodities market and Petroleum sector was not included much in this budget. For the Auto sector, he felt that the budget presents a challenge for companies like M&M, and a positive sign for buses and commercial vehicle companies like Telco and Tata among others. He analyzed the impact on the Metal Sector as minimal, for the Reality Sector as a little negative, for the Road Sector as positive and for Textile Sector because of reduction in excise duty. He concluded by saying that overall it is a negative budget. The last guest to analyze the budget was Mr. Vishwanath J K. He viewed the budget from a banker's perspective. He focused on the tone of the budget which has changed over the years. He said that the credit growth is directly proportional to the GDP growth and is 2 to 2.5 times the same. According to him, the major contributors are Agriculture, Industry and Services. He said that looking at the food inflation which is at 11.3% as per the WPI; we have to earn a lot more than present. He said that the growth was more focused on the services sector which is unnatural for the economies like that of India. He was optimistic about the new regulatory authority for the Road Sector and the new policy regarding the Investment allowance. He further emphasized that there are three levers of profitability Income, Cost & Provisions. These three are impacting sectoral profitability. He spoke on the sectoral developments where he mentioned the need of R&D and efficient production in the Agriculture Sector, the tough period faced by the Automobile Sector and the Infrastructure companies not being able to make money and that they are in the phase of debt restructuring. Finally he concluded that there needs to be more income generation, widening the tax base, increment in the agriculture productivity. He particularly emphasized on the transition of workforce from Agriculture to Manufacturing to Services sector. He concluded by saying that the budget might be populist in the year of election and will be a watch year for the banking sector. All in all, it was a very informative budget session for the students and faculties of TAPMI.

BrandScan'12 BrandScan 2012 is the 20th year of this market research event, which is unique of its kind in India's B-schools. In BrandScan, the market research is done in the form of 'Disguised Games' to get unbiased response from consumers. These disguised games are all worked on by the students of TAPMI to find out the consumer preferences and behaviour. The consumers may be of different age groups and respond through some research questions. The event is a fun, hands-on, and serious learning through research. BrandScan 2012 for the first time is being conducted in three formats : October 27 & 28: City Centre Mall, Mangalore (Mall Format) November 3 : Nehru Maidan, Kundapur (Rural Format) November 4 : KMC Greens, Manipal (Fair Format) TAPMI successfully conducted its annual market research fair, BrandScan , thereby marking its 20th edition with grand success. BrandScan is the annual extravaganza that started 20 years back in Manipal and has grown from strength to strength ever since. The BrandScan 2012 Team began work in March 2012. Based on feedback from our clients, the introduction of the Rural Format was decided upon and BrandScan added one more feather to its cap by going to Kundapura this year- a tier III city close to Manipal. After 7 months of hard work and interaction with companies from every sector, BrandScan officially released the 12 projects on Our Director, Prof. R.C. Natarajan left no stones unturned from his end as he conducted a market research workshop for the students so that they carry out the actual motive in a professional manner. In order to give the Project Leads an insight into Industry, the market research partner for the year 2012- Frost & Sullivan conducted a workshop for the Teams. The 12 Project Leads chosen after a rigorous selection process 59

began work on their chosen projects with great enthusiasm and energy. The BrandScan Event Phase kick started off 27th October at City Centre Mall, Mangalore where crowds flanked the stalls set up by the students of TAPMI. The event was declared open by Mr. Ravi Sheshadri, VicePresident, Bharti AXA GI. The day also saw the biggest surprise unfolding- A 10 minute Flash mob in the central atrium of the mall by the students. The crowds were enthralled and joined in as well. The Mangalore fever went on the next day as well where crowds poured in even larger numbers. The stalls set up by the students witnessed a response of more than 750 over the two days.

The second leg of the BrandScan chapter started on November 3, at Nehru Maidan, Kundapura. This was the first time that BrandScan was testing a demographic like this and it turned out to be a successful move. Inaugurated by Mr. Mohandas Shenoy, the President of Municipality of Kundapura, the event got kicked off with “Nammaorina Auto”, where the local Auto drivers decorated their auto for a competition. The crowd turned up in thousands to witness the magic. Events like Ladies Quiz, Kids Got Talent, Zest-the dance show and Mr. Biker- Bike Stunt Competition kept the audience enthused throughout the day. The participation of the local crowd in the competitions and the enthusiasm of the crowd was overwhelming. Mr. Biker saw the maximum turnout during the day and in the evening Zest stole the show. The final stop of BrandScan'12 was at its home pitch that is Manipal. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Raghunath Rudran, Associate Dean, Administration,

TAPMI on 4th November at the lovely KMC Greens. The set up was grand, and stage was set for a stupendous finale. 10 stalls were set up by the students that had attractive and innovative games for the crowd. The first event of the day was “Adarsh Dampati”- the search for the best married couple in Manipal and it saw amazing response from the participants and the audiences as well. It was followed by Kids Got Talent where the number of participants exceeded 40 with a plethora of extraordinary talent performing and enthralling the audience. Brand Quiz, conducted by Espirit, the Quiz club at TAPMI also saw teams testing their knowledge about the brands. 25 Teams from colleges like KMC, MCODS, MIT, MCOPS, MIM, and MIC participated in the event. Zest followed Brand Quiz and the event saw a fitting finish with different college teams participated and competed in Panache- the fashion show. The senior BrandScan team members also walked the ramp, much to the delight of TAPMIans. The event concluded with great style and it can be safely said that the 20th edition saw BrandScan achieve a new high altogether. BrandScan triumphed and demonstrated why it is called the Master of Disguise.

Atharva 2012-13 Atharva, the annual international B School Fest of TAPMI has always been a quest to reach greater heights through the implementation of newer ideas and innovations. What began as HILL FEST in the year 1986 as an intra-TAPMI event transformed for the first time into an inter-B school fest - SUMMIT in the year 1996. The radical change came through in the year 2002, when Summit was transformed to its current majestic avatar ATHARVA! Atharva 2012-13, was held on the 18th, 19th and 20th January 2013. The 3-day extravaganza touched upon all facets of management with an appropriate mix of fun and learning. Atharva 2012-13 has “Survive, Revive, Conquer” as its theme- which signifies the spirit to compete and challenge yourself in every moment, where only the best of the best survive. Atharva 201213 has scaled new heights this year with a total of 2040 participants from over 70 B Schools across India. A total of 196 students traveled to Manipal as finalists for various events of Atharva this year. Registered participants include students from IIM A, B, C, K, I, ISB Hyderabad, SP Jain Mumbai, JBIMS Mumbai, XIME Bangalore and so on. There has also been a drastic increase in the number of corporate sponsors who have associated with Atharva 2012-13. Our Principal Sponsor was MSFM Manipal and Co-Sponsor was BSE Investor Protection Fund, Mumbai. Our event sponsors include ONGC, Cognizant, TATA Agrico, Coca Cola and many others. Idea Cellular was the Telecom Partner and eSparsha was the merchandising partner. Focusing on the social aspect of management, Atharva this year organized a Marathon within Manipal by associating with M.A.D (Make A Difference), for the cause of “Education for the Underprivileged”. A total of 386 runners participated in the Marathon which was flagged off by our Director - Dr R C Natarajan. A grand sum of Rs 40,000 was raised with the help of this initiative and donated to MAD towards the cause. With respect to the various individual events, our flagship event QOTB (held at Kaup Beach) which was initiated in the year 2003 entered its 10th successful year. QOTB this year had taken a giant leap by moving outside Manipal for the first time and conducted preliminary rounds in Mumbai and Bangalore. The Grand Finale was hosted by the 'Pickbrain'-Mr. Giri Subramaniam of TATA Crucible fame.

Moving away from the format of classroom events this year, Atharva had LIVE case studies for most of the major management events. In this case, the participants were taken to the respective companies to analyze the problem, interact with the employees and provide relevant solutions which were judged by the executives from the companies. This format was adopted in Brandiose, inFINity and Sahayog. In addition to the management events for the B Schools, this year we conducted the event Budding Managers, where the engineering college students were provided a platform to showcase their management prowess. Apart from this we also had international participants for the event Abhivyakti, an international white paper presentation competition. Polemic The Big Fight is the corporate debate where industry stalwarts come to one common platform where they will discuss and argue their viewpoints on a common topic of concern. This year, the topic of discussion was on “Unleashing the Creative Genius Who should lead the march in India?”. The Moderator was Mr. Ravi Subramanian- Author of National Bestsellers such as “If God was a Banker”, “Devil in Pinstripes” and so on. Since this trend spans across various fields, the panel of speakers consisted of an educationalist, a corporate, an entrepreneur and a person from the field of arts and literature. The speakers were Naveen Lakkur Co-founder Compassites, Dr M S Sriram Visiting Professor at IIM B, Dr Anbu Rathinavel Senior Vice President Polaris Financial services and Dr R C Natarajan, Director TAPMI. As a part of Xpressions, we conducted 'Vibes', the dance competition which had participants from across south India and 'Right Angles', the photography competition which had over 25 participants from across India. Apart from this, we organized the Entertainment Night which began with a 'Sand Animation' show by Kaushik Bose and a performance by noted stand-up comedian Papa CJ. The Entertainment Night enthralled an audience of ~2500 mostly comprising of Manipal based students and others. On the whole, Atharva 2012-13 challenged the young leaders and provided an environment of healthy competition, that enabled them to showcase their natural charisma, vigour and helped them chase their 61

undying spirit of victory! The grand 26 years have witnessed a number of changes from the name of the fest to the format in which it is being conducted. However, the two things which have always remained

constant and which will always remain constant is the Atharvan spirit of achievement and the TAPMIAN passion to scale greater heights!

Mr. Akbar Khwaja, Director US Pizza & TAPMI alumnus visited TAPMI Campus on 24th July 2012. He addressed a seminar organized by OMEGA forum which was attended by about 110 students. Mr. Khwaja started out with an informal interaction with the students and gave a brief introduction about himself and how he started off by managing his father's Bar & Restaurant in Bangalore while completing his 64

He involved the audience in his talk by asking questions like “who wants to become an Entrepreneur” & “What are the 7 qualities that are required to start a corporation”. He narrated the obstacles that he faced during his early days and how he overcame them. He kept quoting scripts from Bhagvad Gita and how he took inspiration from them when he was going through a tough time. He also narrated humorous anecdotes from his childhood. He took the students through the journey of U.S Pizza in India and the business models implemented over the years. He emphasized on the importance of delivering value to the customers and building lasting relationships with

people. He showed how Ethics & Spirituality can be incorporated into a good business model. He inspired the students by igniting the spirit of Entrepreneurship in them and giving them a fair picture of what an Entrepreneur faces in the real world. “Whiff of Light”, a collection of poems written by Mr.Khwaja himself was distributed among the students. At the end of the seminar, the students were so inspired that they stayed back and interacted with him for another hour. Mr. Khwaja generously made a point to answer every students query and gave his undivided attention. It was an honor for all the students to attend such an enlightening seminar.

Mr. Sujir Praphakar addresses the students on “Modern Issues in Banking” Mr. Sujir Prabhakar, Retd. DGM, Syndicate Bank was in the campus on March 210, 2013 to interact with the First year students on 'Modern Issues in Banking'. He spoke on how the modern banking has moved and the technical glitches that are faced in day to day transactions. The speaker is Mr. Shantanu Bhagwat, MBA(London Business School) and a noted investor. There are over 4500 B-schools in India catering to these students. However, only around 20% of these management graduates every year are employable. from B-school students is declining sharply. This eventually results in lack of global business perspectives amongst students. According to him, there exists immense talent in the country and it is this potential which needs to be tapped appropriately. Mr. Rajesh Padmanabhan analysed the gaps in the current system. Few of his assessments in this area were that practical hand on experience is necessary and so is leadership grooming. Cross cultural skills and new models of team effectiveness are areas that need improvement as well. He stressed on the value of employability skills never to sacrifice ambitions. Change and transformation is constant. Group dynamics helps in channelizing and making winning teams. Effective communication, adaptability, willingness to learn and apply, and dealing with ambiguity are few of the very important aspects in today's corporate world. The avenues to learn and explore consists of cloud, big data analytics, predictive modelling, mobility & convergence, social media and industry interface set up. The speaker rounded off his speech by mentioning that the world today is moving towards virtual space without one being physically present. This session was followed by an interactive round where in the students of TAPMI asked questions, much appreciated and answered by the speaker. It was indeed an enriching address by the Corporate Vice President & Head HR of Capgemini - Mr. Rajesh Padmanabhan.

Mr. Sanjay Sahay, IPS addresses the MBA students of Manipal on Leading through change Mr. Sanjay Sahay, belongs to the 1989 batch of the IPS. Important assignments providing immense value addition to his professional persona include Chief of Police of three districts, (Raichur, Mandya and Chamrajnagar), SP and DIG in charge of Finance, UN peacekeeping in Kosovo and Sudan, Additional Commissioner in Bangalore City, Head of Police Computerisation, Communication and Sate Crime Records Bureau. He created ERP software, the police IT for Karnataka State Police. His presentation was read out at the TETRA World Congress, Dubai, 2012. He is presently posted as IGP, Eastern Range, Government of Karnataka, from Sept 2011. He has the expertise of managing a wide gamut of organizations in the Government at different levels, Registered Societies, and International Organisations. 66

The purpose of his lecture was to make skills of mediator more accessible to every person who wants to deal more effectively and creatively with the conflict of his or her life. He talked about how negotiation is a must and not a luxury in a globalized world. He also mentioned that business doesn't run in vacuum. Corporate management is tougher than Governance because of the issue of profit maximization. He talked about the new model of leadership where leaders are extraordinary not in normal circumstances but in crisis situation. Also, bad leadership is not just a fault of the leader but the fault of the people. He talked about how a manager is more about 'us' than 'me', is productive with cross boundaries and takes decisions and thinks on his/her feet. His statement "Today the meaning of the term mediator has exploded beyond its original useâ&#x20AC;? was thought provoking. He also mentioned how integral vision is to bring all viewpoints together as one. He spoke about how systems' thinking is about drawing better boundaries, and how it is important to define the boundaries well. He concluded by saying we need a generation which can turn conflict into an asset, a generation which has transformational change.

Mr. Akbar Khwaja, Director US Pizza & TAPMI alumnus Guest Lecture Mr. Akbar Khwaja, Director US Pizza & TAPMI alumnus visited TAPMI Campus on 24th July 2012. He addressed a seminar organized by OMEGA forum which was attended by about 110 students. Mr. Khwaja started out with an informal interaction with the students and gave a brief introduction about himself and how he started off by managing his father's Bar & Restaurant in Bangalore while completing his Engineering studies. Later he went on about how he partnered with Mr. Vahid Berenijan & brought U.S Pizza to India. He gave a brief introduction to the concept of Franchising.

It was an enriching experience for the students of TAPMI on March 07, 2013, when they heard about the aspects and trends of social media from a Social Media marketing company. He started his talk by citing examples of how much-old social issues like corruption, dictatorship, etc. were always there in the society, and how with the advent of social media, mass campaign like that of Anna Hazare, Arab uprising, Occupy Wall Street etc. took shape and changed the world in no time. Mr. James Golsen arrived at Chennai in July 2011. He is responsible for advocating U.S. commercial interests and organizing trade promotion activities in South India. Previously he served as the Commercial AttachĂŠ at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand and Commercial Consul at the U.S. Consulate in Shanghai, China. She talked about how the methodology of communicating brand value is rapidly changing in today's Social Age. In fact, she went on to say that she had had to unlearn some things in order to keep up with the changing situations in today's brand management scenario.

Mr. Rajan Bedi, Head Business Acquisition Hitech and Manufacturing, Engineering Services Business, HCL delivered an interesting speech on August 20, 2012, Monday, in Outsourcing Market Trends in IT and Engineering Services, the process of making Outsourcing Decisions and how HCL is positioned to leverage the same. He briefed us upon the balanced business portfolio Q4 FY12 of HCL, U.S.A having the highest composition of 56%, followed by Europe 25%. The verticals in HCL comprises of Healthcare, Retail and CPG, Financial Services, Manufacturing and Telecom. Mr. Prakash Dadlani, who joined 3M India 1 year ago, brings to the table immense industry experience of more than 15 years in different marketing and research roles; talked about Marketing in B2B, innovation driven companies, changing role of marketing and also gave a brief insight on repositioning of corporate brands. He debunked the myth of marketing being a responsibility of solely the marketing department explaining how every department needs to effectively work towards marketing and brand building. He talked about the nature of marketing in innovation centric companies. He talked about how 3M acquires customer insights using qualitative information and intuition as opposed to popular quantitative marketing research methodologies.

Mr. Narsimha, Partner-Deloitte addressed the students at TAPMI Mr. Narsimha Navele, Partner at Deloitte and touchĂŠ LLP enlightened the students of TAPMI by giving a basic overview of the consulting domain and shed some light on how to start a career in consulting. He took them through a brief introduction of Deloitte Consulting and revealed some of the curious information on what they look in a candidate during recruitment for a consulting career. His advice to the batch was not to carry their B-School pride onto their head and hinted that such a pride would only lead to a beginning of their end. He said attitude is the most important aspect that the companies see in a candidate. He also mentioned how ready to learn and adaptive people have to be to have a successful career in consulting. The session ended with an exhaustive Question and Answer session where the students raised various queries they've had in this domain and with Deloitte Consulting. 69

YES Bank Country Head talks to Students of TAPMI Mr. Praveen Suvarna, Country Head & Executive Vice President, Quality Assurance, Yes Bank India visited TAPMI on August 14, 2012. Mr. Suvarna started off the discussion by briefing about his wide experience in different roles in banking industry. During the interactive session he answered queries regarding careers in Banking. He explained about various jobs in Risk management, Treasury, Investment Banking, IT, Quality etc. Being in industry for more than 20 years he shared about vast changes in banking industry in terms of innovations, automations etc.

Workshop on Creating Successful Business Plan A workshop on “How to create a successful Business Plan” was organized by OMEGA forum on September 15, 2012 in TAPMI Campus. The speaker at the workshop was noted Venture Capitalist, investor and entrepreneur, Mr. Shantanu Bhagwat. A Key objective of the workshop was to equip Budding entrepreneurs and young professionals with the efficacy of creating up a Business Plan. The workshop discussed about business plan writing skills and techniques with highly interactive sessions, which included case-studies from India and abroad, analysis, samples, presentations and discussion. The participants actively participated in all the activities and got highly enlightened by Mr. Shantanu's vast experience. Mr. Shanatanu shared some very important tips of being an entrepreneur.

He shared the three important ingredients of job satisfaction learning, earning and career growth. He advised the students to focus on learning and career growth for initial years and choose challenging jobs to learn and grow. He also advised on choosing profiles diligently for final placements and place importance to job profile over brand. He concluded the session by emphasizing importance of interpersonal and soft skills in life. It was a learning session for the students in terms of better understanding job profiles in banking industry and important considerations for growing and satisfying careers.

Director PwC, Mr. Sagar Pawar talks to the students about the pharmaceutical industry Mr. Sagar Pawar, Associate Director of PwC, addressed the students on various aspects of pharmaceuticals industry. He has had more than 15 years' experience in the industry and is also a Member of Indian Pharmacy Council. This lecture on August 18, 2012 was an initiative to provide the future leaders an insight into the thoughts of the present leaders from each industry and also provide a platform for them to interact and get a clear picture of the various industries in the market. 70

Market Research Workshop by Mr. Kaushik, Frost & Sullivan A workshop on Market Research was conducted by Mr. Kaushik Madhavan, Director-Research, Global Innovation Centre, Frost & Sullivan. He spoke on : Industry way of Market Research to the students of TAPMI. Few of the faculty had also involved actively. BrandScan 2012 shifted into high gear with the workshop on September 27, 2012 by Kausik Madhavan, Director - Research, Global Innovation Centre, Frost & Sullivan. Frost & Sullivan is a global leader in market research and consulting. Frost & Sullivan is also the Market Research Partner for BrandScan 2012. Partnering with Frost & Sullivan helps bring in current industry best practices to a BrandScan research project. Around 70 students, comprising of the Project Leads and two members of their LSG (Lead Support Group), attended the workshop. The students were led through the latest trends in customer research. The workshop included several live activities which ensured that the students got a chance to try out what they learnt. The workshop was followed by a Q&A session. The discussion ranged from statistical techniques to data privacy issues in market research.

Technology Transformations by Mr. Thomson Thomas, HDFC Life Mr. Thomson Thomas - Business Systems and Technology, HDFC Standard Life Insurance delivered a highly enlightening lecture on the September 27 on the topic “Technology Transformations in the Insurance sector”. As a part of TAPMI's guest lecture by series the lecture centered on key technology trends adopted for customer satisfaction with special emphasis on the Insurance sector. Mr. Thomas also emphasised on the importance of looking at IT and Marketing though the same lenses given the increasing importance of technology on the marketing domain. The session concluded with an interactive exchange with the students and faculty present.

Mr. Nishant Gaharwar, Director- Human Resources, General Motors, Bangalore delivered on September 29, a guest lecture on “Integrated approach to Talent Management” which kept attendees in rapt attention throughout the lecture. Topics of discussion raged from understanding talent, codifying talent, managing talent and succession planning. The speaker kept the session alive with his personal experiences and encouraged the participants to raise doubts to make the session 71

The Military Experience Vice Admiral (Retired) Ganesh Mahadevan Lectures at TAPMI Very few times students of business administration get a perspective of organizational behaviour in a military organization. Today, the students at TAPMI experienced an enthralling session by Vice Admiral (Retd) Ganesh Mahadevan on his involvement with the Indian Navy. He gave an exhaustive and informative view of organizational behaviour at work at Indian Navy. He began his speech by saying 'The more we sweat in peace, the less we bleed in war', which was much applauded by the audience. He introduced them to the Indian perspective of transformation what it takes to become a world class navy. 72

According to him, Motivation within this great body is immensely significant. The Indian Navy is motivated to perform to their maximum capability. Motivation arises from work that creates tangible results; results that are brought about by innovation, new ideas or approaches; work that more or less coincides with a man's values and beliefs. Conscious and deliberate stress is necessary to motivate an individual to a higher degree, which results in accomplishment of the objective. Team building is an important aspect in the Indian navy, where mentoring is institutionalized. Adventure training and sports are other activities that strive at building competitive spirit. Boot camp is one activity that transforms a man into his culture.

Mr. Mangesh Punekar (Country Head-HR) from Petronas addresses the Students Mr. Mangesh Punekar visited TAPMI on December 15, 2012 for an Interactive session with the Students on Practical Approaches to HR in the Corporate World. He started his lecture by a brief introduction about himself and wanted to take a holistic view on the whole subject rather than focusing on a narrow topic. He asked the students to play an interactive game where they introduce each other with a creative laugh and briefly speak about their passion. This exercise brought about a laughter riot in the class and everyone was involved in this activity.

Mr Sumant Jha, Director Cisco Supply Chain Operations, addressed the Students Mr. Sumant started the lecture by saying an operations professional are given everyone's mess and has 'do it' in less. He then spoke on the foundations of Cisco. He also shared his view that it is good to have a healthy paranoia to work well and diligently. Cisco is a constant learning organization and turning into a value company and he says maybe sometime Cisco can become a growth company. Their focus is on new markets as well. The students were shown the evolving business offerings of Cisco and how technology defines the world and how Cisco provides a lot of these solutions. He spoke how internet and video conferencing has grown and how internet will evolve from 'internet of the people' to an 'internet of everything' where even things such as trucks would be connected by a link and you can monitor the data traffic. • Mr. Bijender Vats, Associate Director for HR, MSD India (Merch Sharp & Dohme) addressed the students of PGP 1 on January 28, 2013. • Dr. Lawrence Pratchett, Dean, Faculty of Business, Government & Law & Mr. Julian Longbottom, Director, International Office, University of Canberra, Australia addressed the First year students on January 24, 2013.

Mr. Ganapathy Lakshminarayan, ITC Infotech talks about Project Management Mr. Ganapathy Lakshminarayan addressed the students of TAPMI on August 25, 2012. He spoke on the nuances of Project Management. Mr. Lakshminarayan has 30 years' experience in the IT industry, spanning from Project Management, creation of CoE for Project Management, Testing, and Software implementation, Software process consulting to organizational activities such as annual planning, resource planning, and interface to Technology Partners. He is currently heading the Project Management Centre of Excellence within ITC Infotech, with a focus on building and nurturing Project and delivery Management Competency, implementation and improvement of Project Management processes across the organization. He threw light on the IT sector and how well it is run because of Project Management. He gave a brief overview on the varied aspects of Project Management and how important it is in today's society. He also talked about how this helps in Non- IT sectors, for example, construction. He talked about the importance of knowing project management for the company to run like a well-oiled machine. He concluded with how MBA and project management are related. The audience could see that this is a lucrative career option and enjoyed the interactive session and how a new branch of management was open to all the IT enthusiasts.

Industry Interaction Monthly talk organized by NHRD-Bangalore chapter National HRD Network, Bangalore had organized a monthly talk on “People Challenges in Building a Global Indian Brand”. It was organized at The Chancery Pavilion, Residency Road on Thursday the May 03, 2012. Mr. Nagaraj from TAPMI-CEE, Bangalore attended this event. The audience was addressed by Mr. Ravi Prasad, Executive Chairman, Himalaya Global Holdings Ltd. Mr. Ravi Prasad shared his personal experiences of his career with Himalaya. He is an MBA from Asian Institute of Management, Manila and he narrated his career with Himalaya and how was able to secure the present position. He also explained the strategies he adopted to transform Himalaya from an Indian company operating healthcare space to a global “wellness” brand.

Dr. Subir Gokarn, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India spoke on Global Environment and Global Growth with specific reference to the present Indian situation. He also narrated the present Indian scenario in the areas of Exports, the balance of payments and the inflation levels. HR 2012 Summit of NASSCOM held at Hotel Le Meridien, Chennai, on July 25 - 26, 2012

Seminar on Fraud as a Strategic Risk “What CFO's and CEO's don't Notice, but Should”

NASSCOM had organized its HR Summit 2012, on July 25 and July 26, 2012, at Hotel Le Meridien, Chennai. It foresees that within a few years, four generations of workers would come together and work. Currently the Millenials are marching forth, and baby boomers are in positions of power. With multiple generations of workforce in the work place, cross generational HR policies may be required, and this was one of the issues that was discussed at the Summit. Another challenge facing HR in organizations is that with the advent of a globalized workforce, alignment of organizational vision is an emerging challenge. Due to mobility of people, a cross cultural mind set and knowledge of regulatory environments is required. Another emerging HR issue to be addressed is the changing gender mix and the attitudinal tweaking that is required. Mentorship and reverse learning was also discussed. Creation of a pipeline of leadership and succession planning is another emerging challenge.

CII, Bangalore had organized a seminar on Frauds for the Chief Financial Officer of companies on July 27, 2012 in Bangalore. The programme was co-partnered by KPMG. There were two presentations on Frauds in companies followed by a Panel discussion on Practical Challenges in identifying fraud within organizations. About 45 participants from different companies attended the same. Mr. Nagaraj from CEE attended the programme. The presentations were made by Mr. Rahul Sogani, Director, Forensic Services, KPMG India and Mr. Parag Deodhar, Chief Risk Officer, Bharati-AXA General Insurance. TAPMIans Network with Corporates in New Delhi Prof Animesh Bahadur accompanied by two students of Placement Committee from PGP2 viz., Ms Neha and Mr Anant visited New Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and NOIDA region between July 25 and 28, 2012 to meet senior HR Executives from several Corporates and attending two Conferences organised by NHRDN and AIMA. The team had met and exchanged about TAPMI with nearly 100 professionals during their visit.

Meeting of the Karnataka Association of Autonomous Business Schools (KAABS): A meeting of the Karnataka Association of Autonomous Business Schools (KAABS) was held in the CEE premises on July 31, 2012. The meeting was presided over by Prof. J Philip, President of Xavier Institute of Management (XIME), Dr. R C Natarajan; Director from TAPMI who is also the Vice President of the Association attended the meeting. Representatives from SDM Mysore, IFIM Business School Bangalore and Mount Carmel Bangalore attended the meeting.

TAPMI Co-sponsors the MSME Conclave 2012 at Chennai organised by CII Southern Region The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector has been recognised as engine of growth all over the world. Apart from supporting large industries, MSMEs serve as a breeding ground for innovation and adaptation. They have emerged as one of the most vibrant sectors of the economy accounting for about 95 percent of the Industrial units in the country, providing about 45 percent of the value addition in the manufacturing. MSMEs in India are characterized by low capitalization and limited assets, poor access to capital markets and various other constraints. In this background, CII Southern Region organised a Regional MSME Conclave at Chennai during August 22-23, 2012. TAPMI, for increasing its visibility and net working, participated in the conclave as a Corporate Contributor. 76

Director, Dr R C Natarajan participated in the India China Management Education Conference 2012, at China. He was also Keynote Speaker and was also one of the Panelists in the Open Discussion forum titled “Educating Leaders and Managers in the world's two largest & fastest growing Nations, China and India” during the India China Management Education Conference 2012 held at Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, P R China during September 21-23, 2012.

TAPMI participates in the IMS B-School Tour A B-School tour was organized by IMS Learning Resources Pvt. Ltd., at Bangalore for the MBA Aspirants. The Interaction was held at The Royal Comforts, Jayanagar 4th block, Bangalore. There were 10 stalls in the exhibition apart from TAPMI, the other participants included S P Jain, Kirlosakars, Alliance Business, Wellingkar, ITM, IBS, Acharya Institute of Management & Praxis (a Business School in Kolkota imparting one year course in Business Analytics). Wellingar were the Associate Sponsorer. There were more than 50 visitors to the TAPMI stall and as many as 26 have made enquiries on PGDM admissions and EPGDM at the counter.

Dr Desai made a highly analytical presentation on “On Post Liberalisation Economy and the Challenges” followed by Questions and Answers session for over an hour. During his lecture, he touched upon the Trade Policy of 1980's which was reviewed, Import Licenses and Corruption, EXIM Scrips, Financial Sector reforms during 1991-93, recent trends of GDP, Inflation, Consumption & Investment levels, Balance of Payments, Deficit Budgets, FDI, Govt Expenditure, recent 2nd Economic Crisis in India, RBI devaluation of rupee, etc connecting to the State of Indian Economy at present and the likely fate of the common man if remedies are not thought of! Later, the audience also discussed on infrastructure development, abolishing of SEBI, creation of a new Debt Market for SMEs, Power Sector Reforms and a single market electricity.

MUTBI, Manipal The New Venture Strategy, an open elective offered by TAPMI in collaboration with MUTBI was inaugurated for the B. Tech students of MIT, officially on 24th August 2012 by Mr. Luis Miranda (Former Chairman IDFC, PE). The aim of the course is to impart Knowledge of Business and its environment, skills of scanning for opportunities, Writing Business Plan and developing attitudes and aptitude of ideation, creativity and lateral thinking. Prof. Dr. R. C Natarajan briefed the students on new product development, & associated concepts by conducting a practical demonstration (Greeting card game). Prof. Dr. A. Sivakumar deliberated on the intricacies of Elements of entrepreneurship, Marketing, Planning and Forecasting, and also risks and uncertainties in the context of new ventures.

2nd meeting of CEO Forum at CII, Bangalore Prof Chowdari Prasad, Dean (Branding & Promotions) is a member of the CEO Forum at CII, Bangalore. The forum organizes monthly meetings with leading professionals to discuss contemporary topics in business and management. The 2nd meeting of the Forum was held on Sept 27 at Hotel Le Meridien, Bangalore and was addressed by Dr Ashok V Desai, Former Member of PM's Economic Advisory Council and now Chairman, Corporate Catalyst (India) P Ltd as also Director, Forbes, Marshall and Company. He is also Consultant Editor of The Telegraph and a columnist in Business World. About 40 CEOs, MDs, Chairmen and members of CII attended the meeting.

Panel Discussion on HR-“New Directions in Training & Development” ISTD, Bangalore chapter organized a panel discussion on the topic “New Directions in Training & Development” in the premises of XIME (Xavier Institute of Management), Electronic City, Bangalore on the 13th of October 2012. The panel was chaired by Prof. Philip, President, XIME. Mr. Gangadharan, President, ISTD addressed the gathering. Volvo Nobel Memorial Seminar

Book on Medical Negligence authored by our Governing Council Member A book on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Medical Negligence: What doctors, patients and hospitals should know" authored by Dr P D Shenoy (Retd I.A.S) our Trustees and Governing Council Member was released on November 23, 2012 at a brief function held at Manipal University. The book was released by our Chairman, Dr. Ramdas M Pai. Director, Faculty, Staff of TAPMI and many other dignitaries of Manipal University were present.

Every year the Embassy of Sweden celebrates the Nobel Prize via the Sweden-India Nobel Memorial Week. The Volvo Nobel Memorial Seminar is hosted by Volvo Buses in India under patronage of the Swedish Ambassador to India. The seminar organised on October 29, 2012 was the fourth seminar. The aim of this seminar was to create greater awareness about the issues and concerns of all stake holders towards creating a sustainable transport eco-system. The seminar also aimed at bringing together the stakeholders from cities facing common issues and helps them achieve solutions through a shared vision. The panelists included top officials of Volvo, the Swiss ambassador to India and personalities from IIM, IIT's and other NGO's. Mr. Nagaraj from CEE, Bangalore attended this event organised at Hotel Leela Palace, Bangalore.

AIMA Program Dr. Raj Aggarwal, Director, AIMA-CME, New Delhi along with Dr Hari Krishna Maram, Chairman, AIMS, Bangalore Chapter visited TAPMI-CEE, Bangalore on Oct 30, 2012. They had discussions with the TAPMI officials with regard to holding their PGDM programme in CEE, Bangalore. Dr R C Natarajan, Dr A S Vasudev Rao, Prof Chowdari Prasad, Dr Gururaj Kidiyoor, Dr Vijaya and Mr Nagaraj took part in the deliberations. The discussions were fruitful.

TAPMI in TIMES Education Expo Times of India organized an Education Expo in Bangalore on Nov 25 and 26, 2012 in Hotel Mathann, Old Air port Road, Bangalore. About 32 different education institutions took part in this fair. TAPMI had also put up a stall to promote the PGDM programme of Manipal Campus as well as the AIMA-PGDM programme that is being launched in TAPMI-CEE, Bangalore.

The Times Education Expo had also organised at Pune on November 27, 28, 2012 at Hotel .....and Nehru Maidan, Mumbai during December 01-02. TAPMI had participated in both the fairs aimed at MBA Aspirants. 78

TAPMI Prime sponsor at the Vth International Accreditation Conference TAPMI was the prime sponsor of the Vth International Accreditation Conference organized by Mr Thothathri Raman of SEAA Trust, New Delhi on November 5 & 6, 2012 held at New Delhi. Seven accrediting agencies viz., AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS, ACBSP, IACBE, BAC and SAQS (AMDISA) presented their processes on the two days. As on date, 19 B-Schools in India are accredited by these agencies of which ISB and TAPMI are the two by AACSB.

Dr RC Natarajan, our Director shared TAPMI's experience in accreditation with the participants. Four of our faculty members, Prof. Chowdari Prasad, Dr Gururaj, Dr Prashant Yatgiri and Dr Vidya Pratap attended the two day event. AIMS International Conference AIMS International Conference on Management: Managing Services in Competitive Environment. Organized by Indian Institute of Management Bangalore was held on January 6-9, 2013 at Bangalore in which few faculty members of TAPMI participated and presented few papers. TAPMI participates in the 7th Global Summit on Supply Chain & Logistics Management, New Delhi AIMA (All India Management Association) organized its 7th Global Summit on Supply Chain & Logistics Management, on August 21 and August 22, 2012, at Welcom Hotel Sheraton, Saket, New Delhi. The theme of the Summit was to set an agenda for the future, for the development of Supply Chain Competitiveness. With growth of world economy, new challenges and opportunities emerge. To strengthen their position, companies need to create more value for their competitors. Companies need to leverage their internal strengths. They must also leverage on national and international infrastructure, apart from other resources. To achieve globally competitive supply chains, the enabling role of infrastructure needs to be 80

well understood and focused on. At the same time, it is imperative that the right skill sets in manpower is developed. Currently there is a dearth of skilled manpower, especially at lower levels. Superior technology needs to be used. A number of senior professionals in the field of Logistics and Supply Chain Management were present at the conference. Fifth Meeting of the CII, Bangalore CEO Forum: Interactive Session with Mr John L. Flannery, President & CEO, GE India

CII, Karnataka State Council organized an Interactive Session with Mr John L. Flannery, President & CEO of General Electricals, India. The session was arranged in Hotel Le Meridien, Bangalore on January 31, 2013. Mr John Flannery delivered the talk on “GE's Perspective of a Globally Evolving India”. He emphasized that India will be a preferred destination for the investments from their company. He also briefly expressed his views on the measures that are required to be taken from the Finance Ministry in particular and the Govt of India in general to encourage investments, and the corrective measures to be taken in the present industrial and economic scenario in India. About 30 participants from different companies attended the interactive session and Mr Nagaraj from CEE, Bangalore participated in this event.

AIMA's 7th National Brand Summit All India Management Association (AIMA), New Delhi had organized the 7th National Brand Summit in Taj West End Hotel, Bangalore on Tuesday, February 05, 2013. The theme of the summit was “Challenges of ReBuilding Brand India : Role of Industry”. The keynote address was given by Mr Bhaskar Bhat, Managing Director, Titan Industries Ltd. Eminent persons from the Industry participated in the three panel discussions. The summit observed that India is being seen as new land of opportunity. One of the largest and fastest

growing markets, India has been on the must-have list of the global investors and brands. The summit made a review of the past and chalked out the fresh impetus required in building the India brand. It was also observed in the summit that rebuilding the India brand will require significant work on the parts of both the government and the industry. The summit was attended by persons from corporate, academia and different management organizations. Mr Nagaraj from CEE, Bangalore attended the summit.

Students Activities Episode - 2012 “EPISODE” an intra-college week long cultural extravaganza conducted every year by the Literary committee of TAPMI. This event is designed to create a conducive atmosphere for the exchange of ideas between two batched of students which otherwise have very few or no reason to interact. This is a unique concept by TAPMI, where it is realized that the exchange of knowledge is necessary to augment the learning that takes place on campus. “EPISODE” introduces the first year batch to the way TAPMI gets things done. Under uncompromising conditions students will be tested on how well they are able to balance academic and extra-curricular commitments Much before the induction of the new batch, the sophomores form six teams, each team being represented by an able team leader. The team leader will assign P.O.Cs for each event, and the TL himself will

be the POC for Litcom. The Theme for this year's EPISODE was “Fantasy”. First years will be assigned teams before hand and team meetings are conducted after declaration of teams. Here they make new bonds, interact with people of contrasting ways of thinking, and yet come together to be one, for the sake of their team! It is definitely a stunning sight to see how the energy levels are transferred from the seniors to the juniors. An unnatural phenomenon, something you cannot express in words: “EPISODE”. Yes, it's the end of the confusion and the teams with their catchy slogans shine bright, yet there are miles to go before the juniors can sleep, and their beds and rooms shall only be utilized to catch remnants of sleep! just the beginning of something so tiring that bodies ache and eyes sag with dark circles, and yet something so beautiful that every junior shall cherish for the rest of their lives, in TAPMI and beyond! 81

Joyfest' 12 Joyfest 2012 was held at TAPMI from the 17th to the 20th of October 2012 as a part of celebrations of the Joy of Giving Week. Joyfest involves the aspects of giving to the less fortunate and sharing a part of our lives with them. It is a 'festival of philanthropy' to show our concern for and to the less privileged lot in the society. The Social Endeavour Group of TAPMI believes that the youth of India should take the initiative to sensitize people on the issues/problems faced by the underprivileged. The basic idea was to involve the management students of TAPMI in teaching orphan children dance, music, arts and craft in campus and finally organize an event showcasing their talent on the 20th October, 2012. Also, as part of Joyfest, SEG organized an NGO Mela at MIT food court on 19th Oct and at TAPMI campus on 20th Oct. Along with Namma Bhoomi, an NGO which sold its products in the campus last year, few more NGO's and local women entrepreneurs showed interest in selling their products in the campus. Some of the products these NGO's offered were each Bakery Items, Ladies Garments, Tera cotta, jute & cotton products, Bio organic products, ayurvedic items.

To promote the sales of the NGO's a competition 'Parivartan', marketing for a cause was organized. In the competition student teams from TAPMI were allocated an NGO and were asked to market their products in the TAPMI campus from 18:00 hrs of 18 Oct, 2012. The students very enthusiastically marketed their products, by putting up banners, posters at various places in the campus. One of the teams had stuck balloons on each and every table of canteen to promote the NGO's product. The teams came up with many innovative ideas to help the NGO's increase their revenues. The competition was judged by Prof. Animesh Bahadur and Prof. Sushanta Kumar Sarma and Team Aasha comprising of Sandeep Kuberkar, Sankeertana, Pragati Jaiswal emerged as the winners while team F.R.I.E.N.D.S. comprising of Prapti Kuhikar, Mukund Holani, Sameer Chhappar emerged as the runners up. Children from Shri Krishna Bal Niketan and Childrens' Home, Nittur participated in the four day festival this year. While the kids were being trained in their domains of interest, a small surprise was planned for them on October 18. TOM & JERRY was screened at the student centre. Genuine smiles on the faces of the delighted kids were worth a watch. A group of volunteers for each of the discipline facilitated their learning as their mentors, aiding them throughout the span of four days. On the final day i.e. 20th Oct, a performance was put up by the children who had been trained in the discipline of their choice, such as singing, dancing, arts, crafts and dramatics. Close to 60 volunteers schooled the children in various aspects of dance, music and dramatics, and the children responded by putting up an excellent final-day performance in presence of chief guest Dr. K. Sankaran a graduate from the esteemed IIT Kharagpur, PGDM from IIM Bangalore and PhD from Kent State University, Ohio,

USA and currently working as Director of Justice KS Hegde Institute of Management, Nitte, Udupi Dist., Karnataka. Staff and faculties of TAPMI, which included Prof. Sankalpa Bhatacharjee, Prof. Raghunath Rudran, Prof. Animesh Bahadur, Prof. Debmallya Chaterjee and family, Prof. P S James, Prof Vidya Pratap, Prof K J Jaims, Mr. N G Nayak graced the occasion to encourage the children.

Dance groups presented solo or group dance performances, as did the groups trained in music. The children trained in dramatics presented a series of highly humorous skits, and the children associated with the arts and craft put up an exhibition of their displays, all of which were highly appreciated.

During these four days, after getting permission from Shri Krishna Bal Niketan for bringing the children to TAPMI, a bus was arranged for transportation of the children and representatives. Snacks were arranged for the children and the representatives.

The role played by some of our student colleagues who acted as translators cannot be overlooked, as they were facilitators for the close relationship that the children shared with their mentors.

Simultaneously, a group of volunteers travelled to Childrens' Home, Nittur to teach the different disciplines to the children there. Leaving the college every day after classes at 5.30 pm, they would go to Nittur every evening to spend quality time with the

The evening concluded with the felicitation of the participating children by the guests, followed by snacks and high tea. After that, the children returned with promises of coming back next year, a promise which TAPMIans look forward to with great anticipation.

Computer Workshop by TAPMI Students for School children A computer workshop was organised by Social Endeavour Group (SEG), students group of TAPMI for around 40 students of class 9 of Rajiv Nagar School on Feb 28, 2013 at TAPMI Campus. It was organised in one of the Computer Labs. Rajiv Nagar School is a government school near 84

Badagabettu village and around 3 kms from TAPMI campus. The workshop was intended to make students understand the benefits of internet and help them learn how to use internet. A presentation based on a course structure was presented to students. Student volunteers from TAPMI guided the children throughout the workshop.

WAVES'13 Let your moves and grooves on.. WAVES is the Annual Cultural Event of TAPMI. It's a 3 day event having various inter-section events including Singing, Dramatics, Dancing and Photography competitions. DAY 1: Inauguration and Classical Evening The event started at 7 PM at TAPMI Greens. The event was inaugurated by Mr. T. Ranga Pai, Principal, Dr. T M A Pai Polytechnic Institute, Manipal and TAPMI's Director, Prof. R.C. Natarajan. The inauguration was followed by the Classical Evening in which TAPMI students presented various classical performances. GOONJ Goonj was the Inter-Section singing competition, in which each section from PGP 1 and PGP 2 participated. The event was judged by Mr. Ranga Pai, Post Graduate in Indian Classical Music and President of the prestigious cultural organization of our country “Sangeeth Sabha Udupi” and Mr. Dinesh Shenoy, Vidwat in tabla who has been accompanying many renowned musicians in live concerts and for recordings. The event started at 8 PM at TAPMI Greens and witnessed a large audience including Faculties, staff members their families and TAPMI Students.

TAPMI 10/10 The event was an informal event which gave students a chance to showcase their creativity, confidence and spontaneity. Each section was represented by their best students one male and one female to compete for the much coveted crown. It was the first time Cultural Committee organized this event. The event witnessed heavy crowd from TAPMI students including Alumni too. Day 3: NAACH NAACH, the inter-section dance competition has been the biggest event of WAVES which aims at not only creating a magical evening with spectacular performances but also creating a long-lasting bonding amongst participants, leaving each one of us with a sense of achievement. The event was Judged by Vidushi Poojitha Acharya, the mentor in Pranava Dance Academy and Doordarshan artist and Vidushi Dr. Tejaswi Kiran, a Doordarshan artist who runs a dance school in Udupi. Many faculties, staff members and their families attended the program along with the TAPMI students in high numbers. WAVES'13 also had some online events like CAPTURE, a photography competition among the sections , which was judged by Prof. Ajith Kumar and Prof. Vidya Pratap.

Day 2: Abhinay Abhinay, the Dramatics competition was judged by Prof. Aparna Bhat and Prof. Debmallya Chatterjee. For the first time in TAPMI, Cultural Committee presented Abhinay - a platform to bring forth the acting skills of our students. As someone has very rightly said - ''Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one's thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world.” 85

TAPMI - ToastMasters TAPMI ToastMasters the newest kid of TAPMI has been a success story. With the support of the Institute's Management and the senior students, we are extremely proud to have our very own public-speaking club in our campus. The guidance from members of other TM Clubs was very well absorbed. TAPMI ToastMasters was very soon able to put together the weekly sessions in a manner which has now became a topic of discussion in other TM Clubs. It also resulted in our members being invited to attend sessions in other TM Clubs as well. TAPMI ToastMasters stepped into the New Year with a long list of things to be done for the club. The Chartering of the club was the activity of prime importance. We all know that static friction is stronger than dynamic friction. With the club still in its infancy stage, encouraging more number of members to deliver their first speech was another important objective of ToastMasters. The experience of delivering the first speech in front of a crowd gives the impetus to deliver more number of speeches. We had in all, 15 members delivering their first speech in the month of January. Our sessions in January were based on themes like Revolution, Festivity, Challenge, each of which created a very conducive atmosphere for an exciting TM Session. The month of January also saw the TM Club experimenting with having sessions at 9.30 PM, which we are sure not many TM Club has done it so far. This experiment was to ensure that we did not miss out on our weekly sessions even amidst a host of other event like Atharva and Speed taking place. We are confident that moving ahead, our sessions are only going to get better as we get to listen to speeches on variety of topics and genre.

SPEED' 13 The annual sports extravaganza at TAPMI, SPEED is conducted over a period of one month. SPEED turns the whole of TAPMI sporty and is filled up with huge thrills, twists and turns! SPEED '13 was inaugurated on 11th of January 2013. This year there was a total of 9 teams participating in the event: The Cheetahs, Angry Monks, Dragon Warriors, The Fource, Ekalavya, Strike 2, Smokin' gunz, The 4th Dimension and The Invincibles. SPEED '13 saw the entire student community coming together to play for their respective teams to win the coveted speed title. 86

The Inaugural ceremony of SPEED '13 was presided by Dr.Vasudev Rao (Dean Administration, TAPMI) and Prof. Chowdari Prasad (Dean Branding and Promotions, TAPMI). Dr.Vasudev Rao unveiled the new SportsCom logo during the opening ceremony. This was followed with the March Past by Team captains proudly carrying their team flags with Shayak Gupta leading them with the SportsCom flag, Torch run by Vivin Mohan Vergis, a SportsCom member, Oath taking by all the team captains; urging them to “Play Fair and Play Hard”, Lighting of SPEED lamp to mark SPEED '13 open. The official mascot of SPEED “Fateh Singh” enthralled the crowd. Blocks bearing the word S.P.E.E.D were ignited as a pledge by SportsCom members to conduct SPEED '13 in a just and fair way. The Opening Ceremony culminated with the release of Sky flying lanterns wishing good luck for the impending competition. SPEED 13 saw a total of 9 different sports: Athletics, Swimming, Basketball, Throwball, Football, Cricket, Table Tennis, Badminton, and Snooker. The games were conducted across TAPMI, MIT/KMC courts and Endpoint grounds. All the teams played their matches as early as 6.00 AM so as to catch the classes on time. It truly reflected the passion of the students who balanced sports and academics with equal ease.
