Dear Friends of Harford Community College: This year, Harford Community College will proudly celebrate its 60th anniversary as the anchor institution for higher education in Harford County. What makes this milestone so special is the fact that our success over the past 60 years is due in large part to the strong foundation of support we receive from our entire community. Together, we have accomplished great things since our humble beginnings at Bel Air High School in 1957. We have grown to become a dynamic, open access institution with 24 buildings on our 352-acre campus. Our vibrant campus life, with more than 35 student clubs and organizations and more than 80 affordable degree and certificate programs of study, caters to nearly 9,000 credit students. Our continuing education and training courses serve more than 10,000 students a year. You may be asking: how did we get here? One reason is our dedicated administration, staff, and faculty members, who encourage learning beyond the classroom. Our small class sizes also help students— whether new students or returning adult learners—get the personal attention they need to be successful. The second reason is our loyal, forward-thinking Harford County citizens, who understand that only through education and self-betterment will our community continue to grow and thrive. Our community recognizes that for some students, financial obstacles most often stand in the way of obtaining higher education. Moreover, each year, generous private citizens and business owners donate to existing scholarships or create new ones—either to honor the memory of a loved one or to provide our workforce with the resources they need to update their skills and gain better-paying jobs. Without this support, it would not be possible for our students to achieve their dreams. I encourage you to create a scholarship or contribute to an existing grant to help a student in need. This booklet contains information on the HCC Foundation, including how to get involved and where to begin. If you would like more information, please contact Denise Dregier, Director for College & Alumni Development, at 443-412-2428, or ddregier@harford.edu. Sincerely,
Dianna G. Phillips, Ph.D. President

Dear Student: The Harford Community College Foundation was established in 1989. It receives and administers private gifts, bequests and donations to benefit Harford Community College. Gifts to the Foundation not only support programs and activities but also provide assistance to students through scholarships and grants. Many individuals, organizations, and local businesses have donated funds that support the scholarships and grants detailed in this booklet and I encourage you to find those that may help you succeed in your chosen field. Talk to your advisor and/or talk to the staff in the Financial Aid office; they are ready to help you with the process. You can reach them at 443-412-2257. You can also read about all the types of financial help available on the College’s website at harford.edu/financialaid. I am not only the Chair of the HCC Foundation but a local businessman and I personally and professionally support the Foundation, as do the faculty and staff here at the College. We do so because we believe in not only supporting you, the future leaders in our community, but the institutions where we work and volunteer. If you should receive a scholarship or grant, you will be invited to attend the Annual Scholarship Reception held each April. This reception is a unique opportunity for donors to meet their scholarship recipients and for the recipients to acknowledge the impact the scholarships have made on their academic careers and express their gratitude to their donors. This moving, emotional reception is not to be missed and I encourage you to make every effort to attend. I hope you find the information provided in this booklet helpful and I encourage you take advantage of everything Harford Community College has to offer. HCC is a diverse and dynamic institution and the Foundation is proud to support what has been called the “jewel” of our community. Sincerely,

A Process Guide For
Scholarship Applications IMPORTANT!
Please read before applying for scholarships.
Financial Aid Terms Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The FAFSA is the application to apply for Federal Student Aid and for many Maryland State Scholarships. The HCC Financial Aid Office encourages students to apply for financial aid via FAFSA on the web (fafsa.gov). This computerized process ensures rapid and accurate transmission of your information. Complete the 2018-2019 FAFSA as part of the scholarship application. Submit your FAFSA electronically (fafsa.gov) at least one week prior to the due date of your application. For priority consideration, the FAFSA should be filed by March 1, 2018. Remember to include the Harford Community College School Code (002075).
Student Aid Report (SAR)
The SAR is the result of the FAFSA and shows the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). This is the basis for determining need eligibility. A valid Student Aid Report must be received by the Financial Aid Office as a requirement for all needbased scholarships.
Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
The EFC is the amount a student (and his or her family, if applicable) is expected to contribute toward the student’s education. This is calculated when the student submits the FAFSA.
Cost of Attendance (COA)
The COA is the total amount it should cost the student to go to school, including tuition and fees, room and board, allowances for books and supplies, transportation, and personal and incidental expenses.
Financial Need
This is the Cost of Attendance (COA), minus the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
Full-time Enrollment
12 or more credits per semester
Part-time Enrollment
6–11.5 credits per semester
Less Than Part-time Enrollment Less than 6 credits per semester
Grade Point Average (GPA)
GPA is determined by a student’s grades and is calculated to obtain a cumulative grade point average: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0.
Applying for Scholarships and Grants Harford Community College, the Harford Community College Foundation, Inc., and private donors sponsor a variety of scholarships and grants. Most of the scholarships and grants are awarded to students who demonstrate a financial need; others are awarded to students who possess academic merit or talent such as music or athletic ability. The scholarship and grant descriptions include specific criteria. While some scholarships have their own application requirements and forms, many of them will require only one scholarship application submission. Some scholarships require additional documentation, which is detailed later on in their descriptions. Students applying for need-based scholarships must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal government for eligibility determination. Students may complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.gov and must include HCC’s School Code (002075). The majority of the listed scholarships and grants are for a full academic year (fall/spring semesters). Harford Community College |
5
Most scholarships have a deadline date of May 15, 2018, although some scholarships may have a different deadline date. Please read the scholarship description carefully for a deadline date other than May 15, 2018. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis after the priority filing date until all funds have been awarded for the academic year. All documents listed below are submitted online through your OwlNet account at the same time unless otherwise indicated. Directions for online application submission are available on the last page of this booklet.
1. Complete the scholarship application online by logging onto your OwlNet account. You will be linked to our online scholarship application through the AwardSpring website. Information in the scholarship description will indicate if a special application is used for that scholarship and if the scholarship recipient is selected by the donor. 2. Upload a narrative outlining the student’s academic and professional goals, financial need, and how a scholarship will help the student attain these goals. 3. If you are a first-time student at HCC, submit either the high school academic transcript and/or prior college academic transcript showing cumulative GPA to the Records & Registration Office. 4. Current HCC students do not need to submit a transcript. 5. Your completed FAFSA application must be received electronically by the Financial Aid Office prior to the application deadline. 6. Supply any other materials required specifically for any scholarship you are applying for, such as letters of recommendation, etc.
Important Note: Many scholarships have criteria that include full-time enrollment. Full-time enrollment is defined as 12 or more credits for ALL majors.
Awarded Scholarships and Grants All scholarships and grants are reviewed by the Academic Honors and Scholarship Committee or by a specific review committee established by the donor. Each application is reviewed for completeness, the content of the narrative, the financial need of the applicant, the cumulative grade point average, and/or the merit of the student. Recipients are normally notified of their awards prior to the payment due date for the semester. Most scholarships and grants are awarded for one academic year only and are disbursed one-half in the fall semester and one-half in the spring semester. Note: If selected for a scholarship or grant, the student is required to maintain the specific enrollment status as indicated by the criteria in order for the award to remain intact for the next semester. If a student is selected for a scholarship or grant and will not have the required enrollment status for any semester covered by the award, contact the Financial Aid Office. Thank-you notes are a part of the scholarship and grant process. Recipients are strongly encouraged to submit a thank-you note addressed to the donor to the Financial Aid Office in a timely manner. During the spring semester of each year, the College and the HCC Foundation, Inc. sponsor a scholarship recipient and donor recognition reception to recognize students’ hard work and the generosity of contributors who provide annual, endowed or institutional support. Scholarship recipients are required to attend this event. Questions regarding thankyou notes and reception attendance can be emailed to development@harford.edu. Disclaimer: Many of the scholarships and grants offered at HCC are funded by local organizations, individuals, the Harford Community College Foundation, Inc., other foundations, businesses and corporations.
