As of our press date of April 1, 2020, the College is operating in an online-only working and learning environment through May 16, at which time we will reevaluate. Although we are trying to move many noncredit classes online, it is not always possible. We have a lot of great classes planned for the summer and we hope to run as many of them as we can!

Behind-the-Wheel Instruction Do you need extra hours behind the wheel?

HCC is offering individualized sessions to help you prepare for your driver’s test or just increase your level of comfort behind the wheel. Students must have a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license.

This course is required for those who want to obtain a driver’s license. To register, bring proof of age (birth certificate, learner’s permit, or valid passport) to Harford Community College’s Edgewood Hall. Students must be age 15 by first class session.

This course meets the MVA GRADUATED LICENSING PROGRAM. Parent or driver coach requested to attend the first class session, mandatory for students. Optional for parents of students 18 and over at time of class.

Basic Rider Course We provide the motorcycles for the beginning rider with little or no riding experience.

Includes at-home e-course, classroom, and riding instruction. You must be able to ride a bicycle to participate in this course!

Students will establish goal action plans as well as develop the skills in note-taking and study strategies to be successful in class and work toward obtaining their GED®. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) If you are a foreign-born adult 18 years of age or older (NOT an F1 or J1 Visa holder) who would like to improve your English communication skills, the English as a Second Language (ESL) program can assist you. You will have the opportunity to improve your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. FREE beginning, intermediate, and Adult Basic Education classes are held during the day in the Aberdeen and Edgewood areas and the evening in the Bel Air and Edgewood areas.

New students may sign up for classes by attending one of the free advising sessions listed below. Room numbers for advising sessions will be posted on the front door of the building.

Registration is not necessary for the advising sessions, just walk in. The advising session will start promptly at the scheduled time. Persons who arrive late may have to reschedule their advising sessions. Former ESL students may enroll in classes by calling 443.412.2152.

The ESL program is supported by federal and state funds granted by the Maryland Department of Labor.

PAYING FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION CLASSES Tuition & Fees Payment for continuing education courses is due at the time of registration. Unless otherwise noted, out-of-county residents pay a $20 surcharge for each continuing education course that charges tuition. Out-of-state residents pay a $35 surcharge. Course Cancellation Policy

CONTINUING EDUCATION REGISTRATION BEFORE YOU REGISTER All students will be assigned a Harford student identification number. Please keep your H-ID handy as it will be used for any credit and continuing education course registrations and for all College business transactions.

Enrollment in continuing education courses is limited to those age16 and older, except for courses that specify they are open to those under age 16.

Non-citizens must provide original documentation (most current resident card, work card, or visa) to register. Students must register in person at the Continuing Education Registration Office in Edgewood Hall.

Please note: Non-citizens who have never taken a credit or continuing education class at HCC must go to the Credit Registration Office in the Student Center the first time they register.

Payment Payment for continuing education classes is due at time of registration. We accept check, money order, Discover, MasterCard, American Express, and Visa.

HOW TO REGISTER Online Go to www.harford.edu/register and follow the prompts for continuing education classes.

Payment for continuing education courses is due at the time of registration. Continuing education students using a tuition waiver must apply in person.

In Person Students should complete the registration form (p. 35) and bring it to the registration desk in Edgewood Hall on the Harford Community College campus. Enter at Entrance 3 on Thomas Run Road. Edgewood Hall will be on your right.

The College reserves the right to cancel any class when there is insufficient enrollment. You will be notified of the cancellation by mail, telephone, email or at the first class meeting and 100% of the tuition and fees will be refunded by check.

Allow approximately four weeks from the date of cancellation to receive the refund. If payment was made by credit card, call 443.412.2208 to request that the refund be posted to your credit card.

Withdrawals To withdraw from a continuing education class, call 443.412.2376, opt. 1 or stop by the registration desk in Edgewood Hall to complete a withdrawal form. The withdrawal becomes effective the day you contact the office. Book returns must be accompanied by a copy of the withdrawal form.

If you withdraw before the first class meeting, the College will refund 100% of the tuition and fees. If you withdraw before the second class meeting, the College will refund 50% of the tuition but no fees. There will be no refunds after the second class meeting, and no official withdrawal is necessary.

WAIVERS Senior Adult and Disabled Retiree Tuition Waivers Some continuing education courses offer waivers for Maryland residents who are 60 years of age or older or who are retired by reason of total and permanent disability. Workforce Development Sequence Scholarship If you’re interested in pursuing a career in IT, Construction/Trades, or Healthcare, this scholarship may be for you!

Ten Harford Community College Workforce Development programs (A+ Certification, Culinary Technician, Drone Technology, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), HVAC, Heavy Equipment Operations, Nursing Assistant, Nurse Refresher, Paramedic, Phlebotomy) have recently been approved as eligible for Maryland’s new Workforce Development Sequence Scholarship.

The scholarship is state funded and available to Maryland residents or graduates of a Maryland high school who are registering for an approved Workforce Development program; both new and current students may apply. Up to $2,000 per fiscal year can be awarded. Applications are reviewed in the order received and based on available funding.

This scholarship is available to Harford County residents applying to a Workforce Development Program. Must be able to demonstrate you are a graduate of Harford County Public Schools OR have earned your GED in Harford County, and received a 2.75 GPA or higher from a HCPS. Funds can be used for tuition, fees, textbooks and program associated costs. Scholarship is in the amount of $500.

Mayhorne Scholarship This scholarship is for students completing a Workforce Development Program and are graduates of Harford County Public Schools, having completed a Career & Technology Education Program. Funds can be used for tuition, fees, textbooks and program-associated costs. One $500 scholarship is awarded per year.

Presidential Scholarship This College-funded scholarship is awarded based on financial need and available for those students completing a Workforce Development Program.

Funds will cover tuition and fees. Applications are reviewed in the order received and based on available funding.

Rockfield Manor Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to Harford County residents registering for a Workforce Development Program. Funds can be used for tuition, fees, textbooks and program-associated costs. Up to $1,000 will be awarded.

This scholarship is available to students who are accepted into the HCC Paramedic Program and meet the eligibility requirement. One scholarship is awarded per cohort, up to $5,000. Funds can be used for tuition, fees, textbooks and program associated costs.

CAMPUS POLICIES Pets on Campus It is the policy of Harford Community College to prohibit all pets from all campus buildings, offices, laboratories and athletic fields with the exception of service animals used as bona fide instructional aids, or animals used for contracted entertainment purposes. Dogs that are properly controlled (leashed) and licensed will be permitted in open campus areas. Owners will be responsible for all pet clean-up.

Tobacco-Free Campus It is the policy of Harford Community College that the College is a smoke- and tobacco-free environment. The use of any type of tobacco product, smoking device or equipment, or any item that simulates smoking (i.e. e-cigarettes) is prohibited on all areas of the College’s property, as well as off-campus sites supervised by the College. Violators of the tobacco policy are subject to a $50 fine and/or disciplinary action. Visitors Policy All persons attending classes must be officially registered for those classes. Any visitors (including children), other than those with bona fide academic, educational, and/or approved business with the College, are not to be in offices, labs, classrooms, break rooms, work areas, or hallways. Children (ages 12 and under) are not to be left unattended at any time, under any circumstances.

CAMPUS CLOSINGS Emergency Closings If the College announces it is closing for any reason, all classes—both on and off campus—will be canceled. SAFETY AND SECURITY

Parking and Traffic Control Procedures Parking is available for students in designated open lots. The maximum speed limit on campus is 15 MPH and pedestrians have the right-of-way at all times. Public Safety issues tickets for traffic and parking violations. High-speed driving, reckless driving, and failure to yield to pedestrians may result in revocation of operating privileges on campus in addition to a fine of $150.

Disabled Parking Disabled parking is clearly marked and is reserved for those displaying a valid State handicapped vehicle registration plate or permit, or a temporary HCC disabled permit. If no disabled parking is available, permit holders may park in any un-numbered employee space. Temporary HCC disabled permits are available from the Department of Public Safety for students and visitors. Requesters must submit a valid doctor’s note. The fine for illegally parking in a reserved disabled parking space is $150.

Sex Offender Registry

Campus Crime Statistics The Annual Security Report contains three consecutive years of campus crime statistics and information on how to help keep individuals and their property safe on campus. It is published and available annually by October 1. A hard copy may be requested in writing, by phone, or in person at the Department of Public Safety, 443.412.2272, located in the Belcamp building at 401 Thomas Run Road, Bel Air, MD 21015.

On-Campus Safety and Escort Services The Department of Public Safety is available on campus 24/7, and regularly patrols all campus buildings and facilities.

Upon request, uniformed security officers provide escort services to and from classes. Call ext. 2272 from any campus phone to access this service.

Towing State law allows for towing of vehicles from fire lanes without warning or notification. Fire lanes are clearly marked, and this law will be strictly enforced for the safety of the community.

Numbers to Remember

The College prohibits the enrollment of individuals listed on the National or Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Sex Offender Registry or registered with the Harford County Child Advocacy Unit. A list of registered sex offenders is available from Public Safety, 443.412.2272.

Weapons/Violence Prohibitions All persons who enter any College property are prohibited from carrying a handgun, firearm, or weapon of any kind. Only persons affiliated with a law enforcement agency who are licensed to carry a weapon and have notified College officials are exempt from this prohibition.

Any form of violence, threatening behavior, or verbal/nonverbal harassment that involves or affects Harford Community College or which occurs on the College campus, or its satellites, off-site facilities, or in any off-campus location that could be considered an extension of the workplace [i.e., official travel] is prohibited. This includes threatening behavior, violent actions, and harassment by/against or between/among students, employees, supervisors, and visitors.

Ethical hacking is the process of penetrating computers, networks, and applications that you have official authorization to access in order to determine if vulnerabilities exist.

Once the vulnerabilities are discovered, what should be done to undertake preventative, corrective, and protective countermeasures before an actual compromise to the system takes place? This course will teach you how to look for weaknesses and vulnerabilities in target systems. You will use the same knowledge and tools as a malicious hacker, but in a lawful and legitimate manner to assess the security of a target system.

As an apprentice, you get real on-the-job experience and earnings while learning your trade. By completing one of our apprenticeship programs, you will earn a journeyperson’s license and have a career that can help you reach your goals!

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

If you are interested in becoming an HVACR professional or are currently employed by a licensed HVACR company, you can now train to become a licensed journeyman through HCC’s partnership with the Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors of Maryland (HACC of MD). The program takes four years to complete and includes a classroom portion along with 8,000 hours of on-the job training. Upon completion of the program, you will be eligible to receive your journeyman license from the State of Maryland without taking the exam.

According to CareerOneStop, a website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, employment of engineering technicians and technologists is expected to increase 7% through 2024, with a median wage in Maryland of $70,000! H.O.T. CERTIFICATE Truck Driver Training

America needs more truck drivers. A 2017 report by the American Trucking Association said that this industry needs to hire almost 900,000 more drivers to meet the rising demand. Harford Community College partners with Cecil College to offer one of the few, exclusive Commercial Truck Driver training programs in the country certified by the Professional Truck Drivers Institute (PTDI).

PTDI certification means that your training meets industry-leading standards for the highest quality driver training, professionalism, and safety.

You can complete your Class A license to drive the “big rigs,” or complete your Class B license to drive straight trucks like box trucks, dump trucks, or cement mixers.

You can also complete the passenger endorsement course if you want to drive busses.

The Class A program is 300 hours, completed over eight weeks full-time, or ten weeks of evenings and weekends. Mandatory physical/drug testing, permitting, and the actual driving tests are included in the cost of the course for Class A. The Class B can be completed in just 75 hours and ten days. Testing is included in the cost of the course.

In order to register for CDL courses, students must: 1. Be at least 18 years of age. Federal regulations require interstate drivers to be at least 21 years old.

2. Be able to read and speak English well enough to converse, take written tests, make reports, and keep records.

3. Pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug screen.

4. Possess a valid driver’s license from your state of residence.

Basic Residential Wiring

A Building Maintenance Technician maintains and manages a variety of systems in various buildings. This program is designed to provide students with the most up-to-date information and skills necessary for effectively and efficiently maintaining residential and commercial properties.

Courses focus on maintaining plumbing, air conditioning, heating and electrical systems, and carpentry skills. In addition, the student must take the OSHA 10-hour safety course.

Program graduates are prepared for entry-level positions for maintenance workers, facilities managers, building contractors, construction material sales, and inspectors. With additional experience and education, students may progress to management and supervisory positions in the construction and maintenance fields.

This course will teach the student basic electrical theory and hands-on wiring knowledge. The student will practice repairing cords, plugs, lights and doorbells. Also emphasized are switches and receptacles.

Must take Basic Refrigeration or have instructor approval prior to taking any other HVAC courses.

Using Government Contracts/Construction Through this course, the students will learn to better understand, prepare, and use government standard documents for construction. Students will learn about invitations to bid, contract documents, general and special provisions, and performance and payment bonds, as well as many other aspects of preparing and processing government contracts. Anyone that is involved in construction, engineering, architecture, interior design, or special equipment and systems and wants to bid for government contracts, can benefit from this course. Students should have a basic knowledge of construction before taking this class.

Home Inspection Master After completing this course, the student will understand what is needed to perform a professional home inspection, how to write a clear and precise inspec­tion report, and how to report findings according to the Maryland Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics. Heavy Equipment Operators drive, maneuver, or control the heavy machinery used to construct roads, bridges, buildings and other structures.

There’s a lot more that goes along with being a Heavy Equipment Operator than running the controls. Great operators know how to read construction stakes, how to calculate cut and fill for grading, and understand how to control surface and ground water on a job site. Having these skills will make you a valuable part of a construction team.

Employment of construction equipment operators is projected to grow 10% until 2024. Spending on infrastructure should generate many new jobs for construction equipment operators.

The average earnings in Maryland for 2015 were $22.67 per hour or about $47,160 per year.

DRONE TECHNOLOGY

Introduction to Drone Technology This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), including their history and developing role in the modern aviation industry. Topics include basic information regarding structural elements, avionics, flight control and guidance systems, navigation, remote sensing and human factors. It also covers UAS integration into commercial applications as well as some basic regulations and sanctions. Emphasis is on future employment in the field with a focus on commercial airspace.

The EPA has strict regulations about the recovery, handling, and disposal of refrigerant or CFCs. In order to work with any type of refrigeration unit fully, you have to be certified for recovery by passing the EPA exam and earn your certification. No appointment is necessary.

The MBON requires medicine aides to complete a two-year CMA Update no more than 90 days before or 30 days after the expiration of his/her CNA/ GNA/CMA certificate. Attendance is mandatory. Students must complete a written examination with a minimum score of 80%. At least seven days prior to registration, students are required to submit a signed letter, typed on LTC facility letterhead, verifying a minimum of 16 hours of practice as a CNA, a minimum of 8 hours of practice as a GNA in a licensed nursing home, and 100 hours of practice as a CMA within 2 years immediately preceding the CMA Update along with documentation of successful completion of an initial 60-hour CMA course in Maryland.

Agency and assisted living facility hours do not count. A current, active unencumbered Maryland CNA/GNA/ CMA certificate is mandatory.

If a clinical/externship component is included in the program, students will need to complete a health assessment form and provide immunization records. These forms are available at the Registration Desk located in Edgewood Hall and online on the program webpage on the College website, www.harford.edu.

The Clinical Coordinator arranges start date and placement with each student. Evening and weekend hours not available. It may take up to 6 months for students to be placed at a clinical site.

If your class requires a textbook, you are expected to have it for the first night of class.

Approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON), this course enables graduates to apply for certification with the MBON and to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) examination for certification as both a CNA & GNA. During training, you will participate in a 66-hour clinical at an area healthcare facility. American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers CPR, fingerprinting, MBON registration fee, and NNAAP exam fee included in the cost of the program.

Students do not need to take a CPR class before the program begins.

This program prepares individuals to obtain certification as an Emergency Medical Technician with National Registry Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
