Basic Rider Course

Designed to improve students’ driving skills and meet the MVA requirements for those drivers assigned to complete the program in order to retain or regain their driving privileges. Topics include causes of accidents, accident prevention, alcohol and drugs, and driving as a privilege.

We provide the motorcycles for the beginning rider with little or no riding experience. Includes at-home e-course, classroom, and riding instruction. You must be able to ride a bicycle to participate in this course! You must provide driver's license and valid email address at the time of registration. If a student is under 18 years of age, he/she must have a parent or legal guardian present at first class session to sign release waiver.

Do you have some riding experience and are seeking a Class "M" license? Can you use the clutch and throttle to get the motorcycle in motion, stop the motorcycle properly in a designated area, execute gradual and tight turns, up- and down-shift smoothly, and achieve a speed of at least 25 mph? Please provide driver's license number at the time of registration. If a student is under 18 years of age, he/she must have a parent or legal guardian present at first class session to sign release waiver.

Classes will be held in the rain as long as conditions are safe; the decision will be made on site at the time. We break for hard rain, lightning, or other unsafe conditions. Student Stand-By Process at Harford Community College. If a class is closed because of maximum enrollment, students may choose to participate in the stand-by process. Sometimes a few preregistered students do not show up for their course and their open spaces are available for stand-by students. To become a stand-by student, report to the class about 30 minutes prior to the scheduled starting time of the course and put your name in for a drawing. If space is available, the stand-bys will be randomly selected. You must pay for and attend the class at that time.

In the workshop, students will learn how to set Specific, Measurable, Action, Relevant, Time-bound (SMART) goals. Students will establish action plans for their goals as well as develop skills in note-taking and study strategies so they can be successful in class and work toward obtaining their GED®. You will be notified of the cancellation by mail, telephone, email or at the first class meeting and 100% of the tuition and fees will be refunded by check. Allow approximately four weeks from the date of cancellation to receive the refund. If payment was made by credit card, call 443-412-2208 to request that the refund be posted to your credit card.

Students should complete the registration form (p. 29) and bring it to the registration desk in Edgewood Hall on the Harford Community College campus. Enter at Entrance 3 on Thomas Run Road. Edgewood Hall will be on your right. Parking is available in Lot E on your left.

Enrollment in continuing education courses is limited to those 16 and older, except for courses that specify they are open to those under 16.

Senior Adult and Disabled Retiree Tuition Waivers

Financial resources and services are available for continuing education students. Please review the information below to see if you and/or your program of study qualify.

Some continuing education courses offer waivers for Maryland residents who are 60 years of age or older or who are retired by reason of total and permanent disability. These courses (indicated by u) are state-funded and senior adults and disabled retirees are exempt from paying tuition. Fees, however, must be paid in full. Please note that there is no out-of-county surcharge for these students.

Maryland National Guard and Dependents Waivers Members of the Maryland National Guard may be entitled to a waiver of 50% of tuition only for continuing education vocational-technical/ certification courses. Spouses and children may request a tuition and fee waiver when a Guard member is called to active duty for a minimum period of six continuous months of service. The College’s out-of-county and out-of-state residency surcharge is waived for courses meeting eligibility for a Maryland National Guard waiver, but the student is responsible for all other fees. Workforce Development Sequence Scholarship If you are interested in pursuing a career in IT, Construction/Trades, or Healthcare, this scholarship may be for you! Six Harford Community College Workforce Development programs (A+ Certification, Certified Nursing Assistant, HVAC, Nurse Refresher, Paramedic, Drone Technology) have recently been approved as eligible for Maryland’s new Workforce Development Sequence Scholarship. The scholarship is state funded and available to Maryland residents or graduates of a Maryland High School that are registering for an approved Workforce Development program—both new and current students may apply. Up to $2,000 per fiscal year can be awarded. Applications are reviewed in the order received and based on available funding.

Chizmar Family Paramedic Scholarship This scholarship is available to students that are accepted into the HCC Paramedic Program and meet the eligibility requirement. One scholarship is awarded per cohort, up to $5,000. Funds can be used for tuition, fees, textbooks and programassociated costs.

Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to students in the Certified Nursing Assistant Program. One scholarship is awarded per semester in the amount of $2,333. Funds can be used for tuition, fees, textbooks and program-associated costs. Preference is given to employees of Citizens Care and Rehabilitation.

Hunter Memorial Scholarship

Mayhorne Scholarship This scholarship is for students completing a Workforce Development Program and graduates of Harford County Public Schools, having completed a Career & Technology Education Program. Funds can be used for tuition, fees, textbooks and program-associated costs. One $500 scholarship is awarded per year.

Presidential Scholarship This College-funded scholarship is awarded based on financial need and available for those students completing a Workforce Development Program. Funds will cover tuition and fees. Applications are reviewed in the order received and based on available funding.

Tobacco-Free Campus It is the policy of Harford Community College that the College is a smoke- and tobacco-free environment. The use of any type of tobacco product, smoking device or equipment, or any item that simulates smoking (i.e. e-cigarettes) is prohibited on all areas of the College’s property, as well as off-campus sites supervised by the College. Violators of the tobacco policy are subject to a $50 fine and/or disciplinary action. Visitors Policy All persons attending classes must be officially registered for those classes. Parking and Traffic Control Procedures Parking is available for students in designated open lots. The maximum speed limit on campus is 15 MPH and pedestrians have the right-of-way at all times. Public Safety issues tickets for traffic and parking violations. High-speed driving, reckless driving, and failure to yield to pedestrians may result in revocation of operating privileges on campus in addition to a fine of $150.

Disabled Parking Disabled parking is clearly marked and is reserved for those displaying a valid State handicapped vehicle registration plate or permit, or a temporary HCC disabled permit. If no disabled parking is available, permit holders may park in any un-numbered employee space. Temporary HCC disabled permits are available from the Department of Public Safety for students and visitors. Requesters must submit a valid doctor’s note. The fine for illegally parking in a reserved disabled parking space is $150.

Campus Crime Statistics The Annual Security Report contains three consecutive years of campus crime statistics and information on how to help keep individuals and their property safe on campus. It is published and available annually by October 1. On-Campus Safety and Escort Services The Department of Public Safety is available on campus 24/7, and regularly patrols all campus buildings and facilities. Upon request, uniformed security officers provide escort services to and from classes. Call ext. 2272 from any campus phone to access this service.

State law allows for towing of vehicles from fire lanes without warning or notification. Fire lanes are clearly marked, and this law will be strictly enforced for the safety of the community.

Numbers to Remember

The College prohibits the enrollment of individuals listed on the National or Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Sex Offender Registry or registered with the Harford County Child Advocacy Unit. Weapons/Violence Prohibitions All persons who enter any College property are prohibited from carrying a handgun, firearm, or weapon of any kind. Only persons affiliated with a law enforcement agency who are licensed to carry a weapon and have notified College officials are exempt from this prohibition. Any form of violence, threatening behavior, or verbal/nonverbal harassment that involves or affects Harford Community College or which occurs on the College campus, or its satellites, off-site facilities, or in any off-campus location that could be considered an extension of the workplace [i.e., official travel] is prohibited. APPRENTICESHIPS Completing apprenticeship training gives construction and trade workers a considerable advantage over those trained by informal means, and allows them to obtain a journeypersonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

If you are interested in becoming an HVACR professional or are currently employed by a licensed HVACR company, you can now train to become a licensed journeyman through HCCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s partnership with the Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors of Maryland (HACC of MD). The program takes four years to complete and includes a classroom portion along with 8,000 hours of on-the job training. Upon completion of the program, you will be eligible to receive your journeyman license from the State of Maryland without taking the exam. To enroll in this program, you must apply. According to CareerOneStop, a website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, employment of engineering technicians and technologists is expected to increase 7% through 2024, with a median wage in Maryland of $70,000! Students completing a certificate program could find a wide variety of job opportunities in manufacturing, electronics, production and processing, operations, and research and development.

COMMERCIAL TRUCK DRIVER H.O.T. CERTIFICATE Truck Driver Training

Harford Community College has partnered with Cecil College to offer CDL-A and CDL-B Commercial Truck Driving Training. For a Class A license, students prepare to drive the big rigs. They attend a 300-hour program where a full 75% of the course is hands-on behind-thewheel training. Students can attend a Monday–Friday daytime program for eight weeks or attend an evening/ weekend program for ten weeks. For the Class B license, students prepare to drive straight trucks such as beverage delivery, concrete mixers, dump trucks, and general delivery trucks. Students attend 75 hours of training with handson being approximately 75% of the course. Students can attend a TuesdayFriday daytime program over two and half weeks, ten days total. Mandatory physical/drug testing, permitting, and the actual driving tests are included in the cost of the course.

In order to enroll, students must: 1. Be at least 18 years of age. Federal regulations require interstate drivers to be at least 21 years old. Eighteen- to 21-year-old commercial drivers are restricted to driving within the state boundaries. 2. Be able to read and speak English well enough to converse, take written tests, make reports, and keep records. 3. Pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug screen. 4. Possess a valid driver’s license from your state of residence. 5. Pass a basic reading and math test. 6. Have no more than three points on your license. 7. Have no alcohol- or drug-related vehicle violations showing on your MVA driving record. 8. Have no outstanding tickets or suspensions from any state. 9. Have the ability to learn how to shift a manual transmission vehicle. 10. Have reliable transportation. All students must be interviewed prior to registering. Harford’s HVAC/R program prepares students for entry-level positions in the HVAC industry in under 12 months. Many of our hands-on classes take place in simulated work environments so that you get the skills and experience you need to attract employers and find in-demand job opportunities. The training at HCC is fast track and career focused so you can move more quickly into the working world. At HCC, students have access to an up-to-date lab environment for training and lessons in the diagnosis, repair, and service of basic HVAC/R systems. Heavy Equipment Operators drive, maneuver, or control the heavy machinery used to construct roads, bridges, buildings and other structures. There’s a lot more that goes along with being a Heavy Equipment Operator than running the controls. Great operators know how to read construction stakes, how to calculate cut and fill for grading, and understand how to control surface and groundwater on a job site. Having these skills will make you a valuable part of a construction team.

This course uses a blended mix of instructor-led training and hands-on equipment. You will learn solar-electric system design, installation, and safety procedures. Our hands-on solar training equipment covers the common steps of a residential solar electric retrofit. You will learn how to work with DC disconnects, inverters, AC disconnects, and load center/service panels to tie in with the utility. We will also demonstrate the connection of a live solar array feeding power into the grid.

Heavy Equipment Operations

Employment of construction equipment operators is projected to grow 10% until 2024. Spending on infrastructure should generate many new jobs for construction equipment operators. The average earnings in Maryland for 2015 were $22.67 per hour, or about $47,160 per year. Harford Community College will be using the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum on Heavy Equipment Operations. Textbooks required.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)/Drone Technology Drones, also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUASs), and Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA), are gaining in popularity! The regulations are constantly changing, opening up opportunities for potential uses and occupations. Some of the industries that are benefiting from the use of drones are agriculture, meteorology, aerial photography, search and rescue, construction and even sports. The FAA has predicted that annual sales of these units will be about $7 million by 2020 and it is estimated that over 2500 jobs will be created in the State of Maryland by 2025. This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), including their history and developing role in the modern aviation industry. Topics include basic information regarding structural elements, avionics, flight control and guidance systems, navigation, remote sensing and human factors. It also covers UAS integration into commercial applications as well as some basic regulations and sanctions. Emphasis is on future employment in the field with a focus on commercial airspace.

The overall objective of this course is to provide the participants with a thorough understanding of what procedures and documentation are required to obtain a FAA Part 107 Commercial Drone Pilot's License. This program prepares individuals to obtain certification as an Emergency Medical Technician with National Registry Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Emergency medical technicians must possess the basic knowledge and skills required to stabilize patients and work as part of a team under medical supervision, either with other BLS providers or with paramedics. They respond to both critical and emergent patients. Classes focus on general emergency care, EMS foundations, airway management, patient assessment and EMS operations. Work directly under the supervision of physical therapists and physical therapy assistants to help make therapy sessions more productive. As a member of the rehabilitation team, you will move patients to and from treatment areas; assist patients with their treatment plans and exercise programs; maintain a clean and organized work environment; perform routine clerical duties; order supplies; answer the phone; and fill out insurance forms and other paperwork. Upon successful completion of all required courses, you are eligible to participate in a 40-hour externship at an area physical therapy clinic. Food Service Sanitation Developed by the National Restaurant Association, this course enables participants to become certified in food safety and sanitation. Upon completion of the course and a passing grade on the exam, students receive a certificate that is recognized by the State of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Textbook is required and should be purchased before first class session. The book is approximately $75. This is a hybrid class. First and last class session held on campus.

Starting with Introduction to Floral Design and completing the entire program, you will learn everything from simple arrangements up to modern arrangements using different materials. Our creative instructors will show you many ways to make beautiful displays.

CERTIFICATE

Students will need to complete the introduction class first, then there are four more required classes, and three electives that can be taken in any order (see below). Classes are offered throughout the year, and not all classes are offered every term.

If you are creative and enjoy socializing, consider a career as a nail technician. The best part, there’s no need to go to an expensive beauty school because Harford Community College offers a Nail Technician Program.

Degrees ASSOCIATE OF ARTS (A.A.) The Associate of Arts degree recognizes a curricular focus on the liberal arts (humanities, social sciences and similar subjects) and fine arts. The Associate of Arts degree not only transfers to appropriate baccalaureate programs, but also provides for career exploration and skills upgrading. ASSOCIATE OF FINE ARTS (A.F.A.) The Associate of Fine Arts degree recognizes a curricular focus on the fine arts (studio, graphic, digital, photographic and similar arts subjects). The Associate of Fine Arts degree not only transfers to appropriate baccalaureate programs, but also provides for career exploration and skills upgrading. ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE (A.S.) The Associate of Science degree recognizes a curricular focus on science, mathematics, engineering and technology. The Associate of Science degree not only transfers to appropriate baccalaureate programs, but also provides for career exploration and skills upgrading. ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE (A.A.S.) The Associate of Applied Sciences degree recognizes a curricular focus in a specific occupational area. The Associate of Applied Science degree is intended primarily for immediate employment or career mobility; it also provides some opportunities for transfer to baccalaureate programs. ASSOCIATE OF ARTS IN TEACHING (A.A.T.) The Associate of Arts in Teaching degree recognizes a curricular focus in teacher education which meets the lower-level degree academic content, outcomes, and requirements for teacher education similar to the first two years of a baccalaureate program in teacher education. This degree requires a passing score on Praxis Core and a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale and will transfer in total without further review by Maryland public and independent 4-year institutions.
