• Take some time to think about an outdoor place that left a strong impression, or memory for you.
• What place do you remember most, and why?
• Is there a place outdoors where you tend to go when you need a connection to nature, or to feel connected to community?
• Are there outdoor spaces you have been to that you yearn or desire to be a part of your daily life?
• Is there an experience you had outdoors that has had a significant impact on your life?
• It could be a hike in the Sierras you took with your family a few years ago.
• It could be the experience of walking through an outdoor farmer's market or main street in a small town.
• It could be one particular day last spring as you were walking along the Embarcadero or a trail in the mountains.
• It could be the garden where you grew up, or a playground you visited as a child.
• Once you have selected a space, consider the following questions as you write your personal story of place:
1. How did these outdoor spaces make you feel?
2. Why do you think you remember them?
3. What are the details of the place (e.g., views, light quality, colors, smells, sounds, textures, surfaces)?
4. How can you give the reader a sense of what these spaces were like?
5. Have they influenced your choice of study?
6. Why are places like these important?
• I remembered going out with my Mom to the Conservatory of Flowers at Golden Gate Park thinking that she will get better from all her health issues from doctor appointments. The time my mom and I walked together at the Golden Gate Park reminded me of walking as a family when going to the California Academy of Sciences (Cal Academy) Museum. The beauty of nature present throughout the Golden Gate Park gave me a sense of greenery that I can admire with my Mom recovering from endometriosis and thyroid cancer. We were connected by the garden clock we saw outside of the Golden Gate Park which represented as a work of art for landscape architecture. Also, we were amazed by the scenic trails that was more like a hike to another forest with a lot of trees and some bees which I do not want to go near them.
• There are outdoor spaces such as the giant fountain in the middle of California Academy of Sciences, DeYoung Museum, and the Legion of Honor outdoor Theater. There is also a gondola ride outside the California Academy of Sciences where you can pay $5 -10 in my opinion for one ride. The stone statues at the top of the Ionic columns give the entire garden a modernized, green infrastructure with geomet ric designs of the flowers and grass shrubs, sand gravel installed throughout the Cal Academy Plaza. I have been wanting to go to the DeYoung Museum with my parents but, we had lunch there since it was easier to sit down for some time after a long walk. They informed me that the DeYoung Museum had a lot of artworks inside and that there are Egyptian statues outside with their writing done on the outside walls of the DeYoung Museum. I have been wanting to go to the Japanese Garden near the Cal Academy because I can see how many landscape architects took the time to bring its culture and history into a diverse community in San Francisco. Unfortunately, my parents and I could not go because of the admission tickets that were around $10-25 for one person.
• I have experienced going to the Santa Monica beach with my family last summer where the waves were rolling on the shore and seeing two people getting engaged as part of their ever-lasting friendship. A significant impact I had on going to the beach was talking few walks with my Mom and thinking that I wish I can do that when I get a girlfriend and do the same thing. It helped me reduce my stress from all the AAU assignments I had to finish during the previous semester while many seagulls flew across the ocean and more people going on crazy, thrilling rides at the beach. I have also learned that by getting my work done faster, it became easier for me to relax and take deep breaths to reduce the anxiety I have over not having friends at all.
• All the outdoor spaces I have been to make me feel relaxed and having the ability to speak out from my mind if there was something bothering me that does not feel right. Also, I have a peace of mind when I am cheerful outdoors or even if I run into someone I may not know and share it with them. It will be easier for me to imagine them as a place I would go to for silent walks on my own or listen to music with my headphones on while going out for longer distance running to get some energy through my body. Sometimes, I would have the chance to bring my painting supplies with me to the Golden Gate Park so that I can spend a few hours there painting all the grass and flower shrubs without any disturbances. The views from outside of the Cal Academy Museum have breathtaking views not just from the front entrance alone, but to the other areas that are far away from it with more greenery. The ground surfaces are rough since it made from sand gravel in similar aspects of the Apple Park Visitor Center outside at Cupertino, CA. There are no loud sounds outside except for birds chirping and people biking as they are talking to one another. The smell of the flower and grass shrubs are fresh and airy since it helps me breathe better and see more edible plants like natural herbs that are healthy and nutritious. Most of the colors outside are used in green, blue sky, and the light tan for the rough surfaces outside of the Cal Academy Museum. There are soft textures around the stone fountain and some hard ones like the natural brick stone sitting below the Egyptian resting statues outside of the DeYoung Museum.
• The reader should experience the serenity of the landscape, how every green space is utilized properly for meditation, yoga, taking long walks, and feeling the natural breeze flow by without sweating or panting for breath. All the places I have visited have influenced my choice of studying landscape architecture and planning. No matter how relaxing it is to go outside and explore many possibilities of experiencing landscape architecture, it is important to give ourselves some time to reconnect to nature than just focusing on our work 24/7 and have burnouts which would not help us focus and think better.
