rAWr Awards 2017

Celebrating The rAWr-ing Success Of The BE Industry

PRESI DENT’S NOTE Ø

Dear Readers,

DATO’ VINCENT LIM President, MACEOS 2016-2018

We have come to the end of the year and as we look back, it has been a fruitful year for Business Events (BE) in Malaysia. One of the important milestones for the MICE industry in Malaysia was the signing of the MoU of the AFECA-ASEAN Committee (AAC) on 9th November 2017 during the BE Forum 2017. AFECA is the Asian Federation of Exhibition & Convention Associations which was founded in 2005 with the objective of promoting the development and growth of the exhibition and convention industry in Asia. MACEOS was one of the signatories of the MoU representing Malaysia together with five other founding member trade associations from Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Malaysia is also the chair for AAC until the end of 2018. I would like to record my congratulations and gratitude to BE Forum organising chairman Jason Teh, his team and the speakers for a successful event. I would also like to thank MyCEB for jointly organising the 3rd edition of rAWr Awards 2017. My appreciation also goes to the Organising Committee Chairman Melvin Shu and his team of committee members, the secretariat teams in MACEOS and MyCEB, as well as our Strategic Partners: AV Solutions, Selesei Production, Sunway Putra Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Vantage Five, Hawt Dotz and ACLS, and our Media Partners: CEI, M&C/Asia and MIX. 2017 has proven to be a catalyst for the BE industry in the years to come. It has shown positivity that the industry will continue to do well and improve on our shortcomings. Till then I wish our Christian readers a very Merry Christmas and to everyone, Happy New Year!

Welcome to another content packed edition of BE Malaysia. I think this particular edition of our flagship publication helps perfectly to illustrate how the Business events industry is gaining a stronger foothold across Malaysia as a whole. You can see articles on Penang and Sarawak as BE magazine looks again to focus on the country as a whole and not just the capital, certainly in the issue ahead we will continue to ensure our content is national rather than regional. The interview with the new head of the MACEOS northern chapter is a case in point of the direction of the association and will help to cement our objectives in terms of geography of membership. Certainly this issue also helps to illustrate the enormous emphasis now the country is putting into venue investment. BE Magazine has already extensively featured the recently opened Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) and now we see even more development coming on stream with our main article about Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) and not forgetting the ground breaking new MyExpo in Putrajaya, certainly the future is bright in terms of infrastructure for industry growth. As the country gears up to the new challenges in the Business Events industry so also will the magazine itself, for 2018 watch this space to see a revamp of the look and feel of the magazine and also how we will be looking to feature more and more regional stories in order to help bring to our readers the exciting new developments going on in the industry. Special feature also on the rapidly developing provincial cities countrywide will also be a target for 2018. So you see a lot to report and plenty of work ahead for all of us. So it just remains for me to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hoping for peace and prosperity for us all in 2018.

REPOSITIONING PWTC FOR THE st 21 CENTURY With stiff competition from other MICE centres, PWTC is meeting the competitors head on to ensure its premier position in the MICE industry. Datuk Shamsul Kamar bin Ahmad, CEO of PWTC, shares with BE what’s in store for this iconic centre.

As far as business events venues in Malaysia go, PWTC is a pioneer in the field. Could you outline the changes that venues have seen in the last decade and how PWTC has kept up to par? One of the major changes that we see in the MICE industry is that not only are we competing with other fellow

exhibition and convention centres, but hotels and shopping malls are also trying to venture into the business by having their own exhibition and convention centres. We were once the only exhibition and convention centre in Malaysia but within the past decade, we can see that there has been a drastic change in the number of MICE competitors in Malaysia. We are also aware that a lot of industry players are moving towards digital marketing and we refuse to be left behind. We are aggressively redeveloping digital marketing. With the recruitment of our own digital marketing team, we believe that this will bring us up to par with the other competitors. Despite the hike in the number of exhibitions and convention centres in Malaysia, PWTC remains the leading exhibition and convention centre. Unlike some of the industry players who are only experienced in certain areas and events, we are all-rounded. We have vast experience in all aspects including conferencing, convention management, banqueting and even outside catering. In fact, we are the premium caterer for the Parliament.

A historic landmark in the city, the idea of PWTC was conceptualised by our second Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak. How has PWTC managed to keep the historic aspect of the building alive? To maintain and preserve the historic aspect of PWTC, we have several corridors and areas within the premise that were introduced to commemorate the forefathers and history of PWTC. For example, Jejak Umno is a corridor of paintings and arts dedicated to the prime ministers and leaders of Malaysia. In accordance to the ASEAN Meeting 2015, PWTC has also dedicated a wall made of ceramics at Legar Putra for historical events. Defined as being ‘in a class of its own’, what does PWTC offer for BE organisers that other venues do not? PWTC is the oldest convention centre in the country. With 30 years of experience, we are continuously developing our skills and capabilities to serve and handle various types of events. Therefore, it is safe to say

BUSINESS EVENTS MALAYSIA

that we are the most well-trained and experienced convention centre in Malaysia. This can be proven when we successfully handled CHOGM in 1989, OIC World Biz & Exhibition Conference in 2015 and the ASEAN Summit in 2015. More recently are, 2nd Asia Regional Congress & Exhibition, International Road Federation 2017 and the 37th IAHR World Congress 2017. Another significant advantage that we have over other venues is that we are easily accessible by various forms of transportation. We have two train stations that are located within the vicinity of PWTC: LRT PWTC and KTM Putra. An aspect that people frequently oversee is that we are a member of World Trade Centre Association. Being the only World Trade Centre in Malaysia, it is a valuable commodity because

06

BUSINESS EVENTS MALAYSIA

it signifies quality and exclusivity. As the World Trade Centre promotes international trading, this gives us the duty and responsibility to maintain and uphold the standards and expectation of this internationally esteemed organisation. Time and time again PWTC has proven to be a trusted venue over the years. What are some of the significant awards and accolades that the centre has won? In March 2010, PWTC was crowned the 2009-2010 Iconic Landmark for Country Branding at The BrandLaureate Award by the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation. In addition to that, the London-based Business Destinations magazine crowned PWTC the Best Destinations 2012 Travel Award for Best Meetings

and Conference Centre – Asia. During the Malaysia Independence Award 1957 @ ‘Anugerah Merdeka’, PWTC was chosen as Malaysia’s Prominent Brand. Not long after, PWTC was also awarded with the coveted International Client Choice Award 2014. As of recently, PWTC has received a certificate of appreciation from Kaizer Exhibitions and Conferences in accordance with our 20 years of relationship. We have also received the ISO 9001:2008 QMS certification from Standards Malaysia and UKAS. What is the nature of the new development in the works for PWTC? How will it look and what does it entail? KL Putra World Trade Centre is part of a transit-oriented development project.

Ø

“With the completion of the redevelopment of PWTC, we will be the largest exhibition and convention centre in Malaysia.”

This project highlights the seamless integration between the complex and the city, including linkages to the “River of Life” and KL City Centre’s pedestrian linkage programme. The various components within the complex include the convention centre, office building, hotels, retail podium, mosque and parking bays. The development will encompass a 70-storey iconic office, one luxury hotel, two 4-star hotels, a new world-class Plenary Hall, 54,000sqm exhibition space, 7,000 pax auditorium, 40 meeting rooms, 3 ballrooms, 5,000 parking bays, a 7,000-capacity mosque as well as 55,000sqm retail space. We believe that this will be a major attraction to the international event organisers. With this new development, KL PWTC is expected to be the biggest exhibition & convention space in the country.

The architectural theme of KL PWTC is inspired by the traditional Malay attire and will incorporate the sampin, hulu and keris concept. This is to signify the importance of the building in the Malaysian narrative. When will the project start and be completed? The redevelopment will be done in phases. The first phase of the project has already started in May 2017 which includes a 70-storey office tower, a luxury hotel tower, a shopping mall, a 7,000-pax auditorium and 5,000 parking bays. Currently, the complex is being constructed and is expected to be completed in 2020. The details of the phases will be finalised within this year and we will keep you updated about the progress. The subsequent phase will include the development of

the convention and exhibition block and the two hotel towers. This completion is expected to take several years. How will the new project increase the capacity of PWTC? What is the predicted impact on PWTC’s business model? Currently, we are hosting more domestic events as compared to foreign events. With the completion of the redevelopment of PWTC, we will be the largest exhibition and convention centre in Malaysia. In view of that, our outlook has to go global. We anticipate more international events, conventions, conferences held at our event space as well as supporting domestic events. As we will be three times bigger than our previous size, we intend to compete and to be the premier exhibition and convention centre in the region.

MAKING PENANG AN ATTRACTIVE MICE CENTRE Since its formation in 2016, the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) has been spearheading the growth of the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibition industry in Penang.

T

here was a buzz at the World Seafood Congress (WSC) in Reykjavik, Iceland 2017 when the president of the International Association of Fish Inspectors (IAFI), Carey Bonnell, announced the host nation for the next WSC to be held in Spetember 2019. The winner was Penang! What was significant about Penang’s victory as the host for WSC 2019 is that Penang will become the first Asian destination to host the prestigious WSC. In winning the bid for WSC 2019, the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) proved that the state was right in its decision to establish PCEB in 2016 to develop the MICE industry in Penang and position the state as the region’s preferred destination for MICE. MICE is a fast growing industry in Malaysia and in 2016 it brought in a revenue of RM1.035 billion. This is

expected to grow to RM3.9 billion in 2020. The fact that within a year of its formation, PCEB was able to win the bid to host WSC 2019, shows how effective it has been in marketing Penang to the MICE industry worldwide.

A SUCCESSFUL FIRST YEAR Within a year of its inception, PCEB has given the MICE industry in Penang a shot in the arm. According to the Business Events industry review titled Vision Insight, which was launched by PCEB in January 2017, Penang hosted 1,251 events in 2016 which contributed about RM808 million to the state. Most of the MICE events were centred around sectors of interest that Penang has championed such as education, culture and ideas and industry. Most of the MICE events in Penang to date have originated from Singapore and Southeast Asia. PCEB intends to

attract major international events from around the world. This is why winning the bid for WSC 2019 is a major victory for PCEB. Penang has much to offer as a MICE centre. Georgetown, its capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many of its old colonial buildings have been restored and make unique venues to hold events. Penang is also known worldwide as a gastronomical heaven.

SUPPORT FROM PCEB PCEB offers support and counsel to MICE organisers for free to ensure an unforgettable experience for Penang’s MICE clients. PCEB supports its clients via: • Sourcing of suitable venues and professional service providers • Coordinating and carrying out site inspection • Providing assistance and advice for MICE planners • Providing expert advice and assistance on event promotion and marketing • Furnishing promotional materials on Penang • Providing promotional support from PCEB’s PR and Social Media platforms • Granting use of PCEB’s logo on selected events’ promotional material With the full support of the state and the PCEB, the MICE industry’s prospects in Penang look very bright.

GROWING THE MICE INDUSTRY IN THE NORTHERN REGION Eugene Ng, MACEOS Chairperson of the Northern Region, sees exciting times ahead for the MICE industry in the region. He talks about the region’s potential to become an attractive MICE destination. What are your responsibilities as the MACEOS Chairperson of the Northern Region? I have several responsibilities, among them are: • To improve and encourage a thorough development among fellow industry stakeholders in the Northern Region; • To cultivate and uphold a high standard of business conduct, ethics and professionalism by those directly and indirectly involved in the management and supplies of conventions and exhibitions in the Region; • To unite industry stakeholders in the Northern Region through the MACEOS platform and direction and improve the communication and understanding among members. The industry stakeholders are the backbone of all the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Exhibitions) and BE (Business Events). These events require high standards of facilities, accommodations and settings to cater for international guests. Having a strong body will propel the Northern region to greater heights in securing international MICE events easily. What has MACEOS Northern Region done to raise the profile of the region with regards to MICE events? We have continued to serve as the recognised voice for the MICE industry

in the Northern Region. We have also built a strong relationship with the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) to bring the industry to new levels. We have been working hard to promote various locations in the Northern Region as viable destinations for MICE and BE in this country. We also organise educational seminars and trainings by collaborating with the professional bodies from the industry to improve the competency of our region’s stakeholders so that they are capable of holding large international conferences and events. Are there plans to increase the MACEOS membership in that region and if so, how do you plan to do it? MACEOS has room to grow in the Northern Region and we are definitely going to increase the membership. A series of classes will be conducted by partnering with PCEB to highlight the benefits of joining MACEOS. We will begin actively recruiting members in 2018. How has the scene for MICE and BE improved in the Northern Region in the last few years? Malaysia is fast gaining a reputation for becoming a world class and popular destination for MICE in the Asean region and this has helped to increase the interest in MICE and BE to be

t more than 45,000 sqm of gross exhibition space with state-of-the-art facilities, capable of hosting heavy industries show and large scale events and with the largest pillar-less exhibition hall in Malaysia (among its other features), the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) is going to be a game changer in the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibition (MICE) industry in the region. MITEC boasts many features which are the first of its kind in the country for a convention centre. The iconic shape of the building is bound to become one of the most recognisable buildings of Malaysia. MITEC took slightly more than four years to complete and cost RM628 million. This prestigious landmark was built by Naza TTDI Sdn Bhd, the property arm of the Naza Group (Naza Corporation Holdings Sdn Bhd), Malaysia’s largest Bumiputra conglomerate, and was handed over to the Government on schedule. The handover ceremony of MITEC to the Ministry of International Trade and Industry was held on August 8th and was witnessed by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak and his wife, YB Datin Sri Rosmah Mansor. Accepting the building on behalf of the ministry was the Minister of International Trade and Industry, Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamad from the Group Executive Chairman/Group CEO of Naza Group SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin. MITEC is designed to be the first component of a much larger development – the KL Metropolis – of which MITEC is to be the flagship. KL Metropolis, covering over 75.5 acres of prime land development is designed to be one of the Southeast Asia’s most iconic developments: a city within a city where people work, do business, live and play. Naza TTDI is the master developer of KL Metropolis and it is expected to be fully developed by 2025.

MITEC’s unique shape takes its inspiration from the rubber seed and in doing so acknowledges the part played by the rubber industry in propelling Malaysia’s economic growth in the early to mid 20th century. Like a seed that promises the good things to come, MITEC symbolises the growth of trade and industry in Malaysia. MICE is one of the fastest growing industries in Asia Pacific and recognising this, the Malaysian Government has poured its resources in promoting this industry. MITEC is an example of this. No longer will major international exhibitions bypass Malaysia due to lack of exhibition space. MITEC offers some of the best facilities in the region such as: • 13.1 acres of flexible function space over massive double volume floors. • 11 exhibition halls (nine mega halls and two medium sized halls). • When combined, the entire exhibition halls can seat 47,700 visitors in theatre style seating and 23,300 guests in banquet arrangements! • Three acre column-less hall, exhibition space f or up to 2,200 booths. • Halls with up to 36m high ceilings. • Direct services ramp to all floors and connected to every exhibition hall. • Exhibition halls at Level 1 is able to support the weight of heavy machineries and vehicles such as tanks and helicopters as they have a maximum floor loading of 50kN/sqm. • 1,400 parking bays are available, including VIP and valet parking services offered for the guests’ convenience. MITEC has been awarded with the Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) by RSP Architects and is en route to achieve ISO compliance, including the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points Certification (HACCP) recognised. HACCP is the international food safety system for international convention facilities and five-star hotels. The strategic location of MITEC is another plus point of this convention centre. Located 9km from Kuala Lumpur City Centre and 65km from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, it is accessible through major roads, expressways and highways.

BUSINESS EVENTS IN SARAWAK GENERATES INCOME FOR STATE’S ECONOMY As a leading Asian second tier Business Events (BE) destination, Sarawak is seeing the fruits of its effort to brand itself internationally in BE thanks to the efforts of the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB).

usiness Events (BE), also known as Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) are in many ways more lucrative than tourism as it produces a greater impact on a nation’s economy over the long term with regards to developing business connections in different fields. Studies show that the BE sector spends 5.5 times more on expenditure in terms of shopping, hotel stays etc. when compared to leisure tourists. BE also

creates the foundation for nations to transfer knowledge and development to its citizens. Many countries in Asia had realised this fact and by the late 20th century had rushed to develop their BE credentials. Malaysia too looked into the development of this sector. Nearly all of the BE centres were in West Malaysia. In the early 21st century not many in the international BE community had heard of Sarawak. All that changed with the establishment of the Sarawak

Convention Bureau (SCB) by the State Government of Sarawak in 2006. The aim of this non-profit company is to bring Sarawak to the forefront as a competitive destination for international meetings. During the following 11 years, SCB and its sector partners hosted 697 international, regional and national meetings that have resulted in over 250,000 delegates visiting Sarawak. These conferences have injected RM504 million into the state’s

This figure was disclosed by SCB during the official launch of Redefining Global Tribes, Sarawak’s biggest ever destination campaign to enlarge the sector’s prominence in the national economy. The launch was held in Kuching on 19th August 2017. The guest of honour at the event was Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. “By attempting to redefine an industry and strengthen its branding impact internationally, we have opened Sarawak’s doors wide to the world and are actively showcasing Sarawak’s efficiency and capabilities to host prestigious Business Events,” said Datuk Abdul Karim.

REDEFINING GLOBAL TRIBES (RGT) CAMPAIGN The aim of the campaign is to increase the impact of BE on the economy by

creating a stronger global identity by imprinting Sarawak’s cultural values of community, unity and identity upon the BE sector internationally. Dato Sri Dr. Muhd. Leo Michael Toyad Abdullah, SCB’s Chairman said, “Beyond the immediate RM504 million revenue, there is a greater impact derived from Business Events over the long term especially for medicine, technology, science, and other advanced industries. BE produces meaningful business relationships and international collaboration across a myriad of sectors.” As part of the campaign, SCB played host to the inaugural FAM trip to about 100 experts from national and international associations, academia, corporate, media and convention ambassadors. The trip was from 17th to 20th August 2017. The RGT campaign comes on the heels of Sarawak’s success in winning

the bid to host the 55th International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Congress in Kuching in 2016. Hosting this landmark event put Sarawak on the map of the international BE community because of the enormous influence of ICCA on the international BE scene. By being the host of the ICCA Congress, Sarawak also had the honour of being among the few Asian 2nd tier destinations to host this prestigious event. During the FAM trip, the participants visited some of Sarawak’s popular BE venues and attraction, tasted Kuching’s finest food, toured historical sights and experienced the rich cultural heritage of the city. They also had the chance to participate in an obstacle course race in the inaugural Tribal Warrior Challenge on August 19th! It is an important step forward for us to embark and foster long-term partnerships to develop areas and issues of common interests.” The BE Forum, on the other hand, covered a comprehensive line-up of programmes with industry speakers and panelists sharing relevant and current developments that encouraged participation, exchange of information and shared experiences. During the forum, the MACEOS Guide to Health, Safety & Environment for Exhibition, Event & Convention Industry was launched. The BE Forum, themed “Be Ahead”, was aimed at progression and education. Delegates were exposed to the world of digital marketing, which was the focus of the forum. Speakers included Ho Yoke Ping from Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), Ashwin Gunasekeran from Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), Daryl Wong from Connecting Dots, Mellissa Lee from GetResponse Malaysia and Edward Ling from Waze Malaysia. There were also speakers from various industry associations from the

Southeast Asian region who shared their views and plans for the Business Events industry of their respective countries. Some of the topics covered during the various panel discussions were Malaysia Business Event Roadmap, Malaysia as a Destination for Business Events, What is Ahead of Business Events Industry, Incorporating the use of technology, Will technology replace humans in the BE industry? and Incorporating the use of event technology. During her talk, Ho Yoke Ping stressed on the broader contribution business events make that go beyond dollars and cents. “Business events is a powerful strategy for powering global trade and intellectual engagement.

Every government in every country is focused on building knowledge and creative economies. And the business events supply chain is full of knowledge and creative businesses,” she said. To drive positive momentum through the nation’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), as a leading business events destination, the Malaysia’s Business Events roadmap plans to stay on track to achieve the government driven National Key Economic Area (NKEA) targets. The specific convention targets relating to each ministry’s NKEA will further incubate sector innovation around NKEA’s priority goals and gaps and drive a positive change for the country. In ensuring the business events industry forges ahead, the Roadmap has underlined five key goals. “The five key goals are to significantly increase Malaysia’s market share of conventions and exhibitions taking place in South East Asia; that business events will play a critical role in achieving the 2020 goals of every government ministry; Malaysia will have Asia’s most professional, successful and sustainable business events industry; significantly increase Malaysia’s direct contribution to GDP, jobs and tax revenue and to help Malaysians expand their global investment, trade and professional networks.,” Ho added. Ashwin Gunasekeran on the other hand, introduced two of PCEB’s inaugural publications — the Destination Experience Brochure and Penang MICE Guide 2016-17, hoping similar efforts will be taken by other states and countries. Social platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have a huge influence on popular culture. TRAINING ON TARGET MACEOS held an intensive 1-day technical training course for event professionals on communicating effectively.

F

or an event to be successful, effective communication is essential from the initial development of the event concept up to the launch of the event. With many components and stakeholders involved in any event, giving everyone the information they need is critical. However, the key to sharing information is to know what’s relevant to the individual. With that in mind, the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS) recently organised a one day intensive course in communication excellence. The technical training was provided by NLP practitioner, Nina Nasir, who is also a HRDF certified trainer who began her career in event management. As a conference producer, she learnt powerful approaches to converting light conversations to long term relationships within minutes. Her training covered

both verbal communication and business writing. Participants were exposed to a world of confidence through Nina’s entertaining yet engaging techniques and tools. Effective communication, as she puts it, is essential when marketing your event to potential attendees. “To achieve a positive outcome, you need to really listen to your client and not only

understand what their objectives are, but how to best interpret them. Clients are looking for one who understands the need to communicate the right messages to potential audiences at the right time in order to convince them,” she said. Through intense discussions and interactive activities, participants of the training saw themselves understanding their physiology, voice, body and mind. They learnt how to use empathy to construct emails and chats to clients and colleagues to achieve positive results. They mastered introductions and exits to leave a great online selfimpression and control conversations by using powerful language techniques to avoid conflicts and negative vibes. “The secret why some people excel in communication is that they reach out and connect will all types of sensory learners and cognitive thinkers. On a one-on-one basis, they first identify the primary sensory and cognitive thinking pathways of the person with whom they are interacting. Then they present and exchange information on that person’s preferred pathways,” Nina stated.

he federal administrative capital of Putrajaya is poised to welcome the largest exhibition centre in Malaysia by 2021 – the Malaysia Exposition and Convention Centre (MyExpo), which will complement the existing floor space of the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC). Located adjacent to PICC, MyExpo breathes new life into the arena of meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) in the diplomatic enclave of Putrajaya. A ground breaking ceremony for the first phase of this development project, officiated by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Mohd. Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, was held on 26 September 2017. MyExpo is part of the larger masterplan of MyExpo City, a diplomatic and integrated mixed development project which has been conceptualised as a green development. MyExpo boasts the latest in building technology and will feature massive

indoor and outdoor exhibition space totalling 1.52 million square feet spread across 5 floors. The venue is an all-encompassing exhibition centre that comprises 8 exhibition halls with a capacity to hold 3,000 booths, including 2 halls with 5-tonne floor loading, 1 outdoor exhibition hall, 12 banquets halls catering to 1,000 pax each, a 5,000-seating Plenary hall, 9 meeting rooms for 180 pax each, 4 seminar halls for 200 pax each, 2 conference rooms to accommodate 300 pax each and 2,500 parking spaces. The interiors layout present column-free halls with high ceilings to accommodate all types of exhibition displays and booths. In his speech during the groundbreaking ceremony, Dato’ Sri Najib said, “As it is now, we are already attracting millions of visitors into Malaysia, we need to set the standard even higher for more years to come. I believe, upon completion, and with the commencement of MyExpo in 2021, we will not only receive more

visitors but also create more jobs and strengthen Malaysia’s economic growth as a whole.” MyExpo is part of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) blueprint to create economic opportunities to the value of RM1.3 trillion as well as to achieve Malaysia’s aspiration to be a high-income nation by 2020. This development is expected to provide 1.3 million job opportunities and to attract USD444 million in investments. The project is divided into phases – Phase 1A consists of a 5-storey exhibition hall, a 23-storey building that houses a 4-star hotel with 300 rooms and a helipad; while Phase 1B will feature a 5-star hotel, and Phase 1C will host a boutique mall, an indoor theme park and service apartments. MyExpo is a signature project by Putrajaya Leisures and Services Group Sdn Bhd (PULSE Group), which is wholly-owned by Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPj), an investment arm for the development of Putrajaya.
