MUSEUM FOR CARTOON ART
MUSEUM FOR CARTOON ART
- BANGALORE
A cartoon is a drawing that captures the entire idea of what the cartoonist wants to convey by observing and exaggerating the characters’ features. People have always associated cartoons with childhood, so the desire to establish venues that recognize cartoons and cartoonists arose in order to evoke that nostalgia. According to research, India has only one cartoon museum, which is about 120 Sq.mts and is located in a building’s basement. Though the museum is the main focus, comic book libraries, shopping malls, restaurants, gaming facilities, and theaters were added to the layout to bring in more population. Additionally, a college has been established to encourage the next generation to pursue careers in the animation and creative industries.

MASSING : The built space has a width of 12m to allow natural light covering either side. The OTS has been evenly spread out giving ventilation and proper daylight to all parts of the building adding a better indoor environmental quality with the advantage of lesser energy consumption. Each OTS satisfies the purpose according to its functional aspects.

PLANNING : Each and every space is well connected within each other while still maintaining a privacy with separate entrances. This is to give the user an optimal experience through the structures. We start our tour with the Cartoon Museum which tehn leads us to the Library which is connected with the College after which we have the Shopping Plaza that houses all the entertainment and services, passing this we are at the end of road with the view of the college behind us.

The building has been positioned considering the visibility from the main road and grand view which is appealing to the audience, drawing the attention towards the building.
The comic museum is emphasized from the other entertainment sectors to give a curiosity for the users. The association of a comic museum supports its activities and its acquisition in particular by publicizing the works that are gathered.

COMIC LIBRARY : The growth of the creative industry has benefited greatly from the emergence of comics. The library is given a large amount of room to emphasise this history. In order to provide our native comics a prominent position in representation, it is constructed so that the first two levels are devoted to Indian comics. The more well-known English and Japanese Comics are on the floors above. This is carried out in order to honour our comic book writers and learn more about how the Indian comic books evolved.

One of the important concepts used was the Serial Vision, it is designed from the point of view of a moving person. This results is the user to stop and engage with their surroundings. This shows how our time passing and the distance covered differs from reality. The concept of serial vision was conceived by Gordon Cullen in the 1960’s. An architect and an Urban Planner came up with this theory to better percieve the street from the pedestrian’s point of view.

FUSION CHAIR This project is an attempt to satisfy mainly 2 groups of people. The aim of this design is to accommodate a vast range of the populace; targeting the East and South Asian communities. This design enables the user to sit in the proper dining posture as well as the cross-legged posture (Padmanasana or the Lotus Pose) if need be. This gives the user a choice to sit in their own comfortable position. And subtle colors are used to make it blend with any them or environment.
12
The normal position of the chair is with the back rest supporting the users spine, this allows the user to take on the more proper dining position.
Now for the second position the chair’s back rest can be tilted back to be on the same level as the sitting cushion which gives the user about 650mm in length to sit cross-legged comfortably.
Push back Hinges are used to get these desired positions. This enables the user to freely choose which position they feel most comfortable in by allowing the back rest to lock into both positions when moved.

ITC KENCES RESTO BAR - ITC KENCES, MAMALLAPURAM The endpoint to the promenade along the path through ITC Kences resort. Designed in collaboration with Ar. Varsha Menon from VM Designs. Due to its location 250 feet from the beach, it has a broad view of both the Ocean and the current pool. The Design’s aim was to make it an extension of its surrounding and not to alienate the structure. This goal is achieved using colors taken from nature and inducing wooden elements to bring in the connect.

Taking inspiration from the Bohemian style, we created a harmonious space that blends in with its mature surroundings. This is accomplished through semi-open seating and large glass patio doors, which allow in natural light and breeze while usingsaturating neutral tones with colour tokeepthe underlying tone muted. During the night, bamboo pendant lights are used to bring the boho style together. The stage is positioned so that it can be seen from 90% of the seated audience.
19
20
Floor to ceiling sliding patio doors measure 14 feet in length. For parties and get-togethers, we can integrate the interior and outdoor dining areas thanks to these doors opening completely. Private dining is designed with its own personal bubble that provides privacy from the restaurant crowd, as well as high ceiling windows to maintain the design’s aesthetics and the flow of the view.

MEXE RESTAURANT - ALWARPET , CHENNAI Worked together on this project with Ar. Varsha Menon of VM Designs. This was a renovation project for a restaurant with a Mexican theme and a Churros bar. The idea behind this design was to make the restaurant more than just a place to eat wonderful food; rather, it was created to give guests a thorough experience of Mexican culture. As a way to bring this result mixture of Mexican Style and Modern Decor is used.
22
The Project covers a total area of 2416 Sqft. It is majorly divided into 3 parts; the Indoor restaurant, the Outdoor restaurant and the Private dining. The Services and Miscellaneous takes over the largest percentage covering upto 26.1% of the total area, Kitchen takes 11.6%, Entrance Lobby covers 5.3% and the dining area covers 57% spread out over 4 types of seating zones.
23
The restaurant uses a lot of art to bring out the Mexican style. This type of art is called “Alfenique”.which mainly makes use of Calaveras or Sugar skulls. These arts and motifs are highlighted through the subtle colors encircling them.

The above diagram shows the relationship of different zones within the restaurant. The space for delivery and service entrance are positioned away from the dining area so as not to create an overlap in movement. The seating zones are created to accomodate people with all interests. BOOTH SEATING Offers seating for six people at a time. Booth seating provides a comfort zone by eliminating unnessary foot traffic around the table this helps the diners to experience privacy. Booth seatings are a great way to save space as well.
RESTAURANT 2 SEATER This is standard indoor seating, but it is intended to be much more intimate. This is positioned so that the customer has a panoramic view of the interiors and the art on display.
OUTDOOR SEATING WITH SMOKE ZONE This outdoor seating also doubles as a private dining area. It provides a more intimate space and can accomadate small group of people.
OUTDOOR SEATING Outdoor seating can create a more natural and relaxed atmosphere. They also welcome pets. Patio dining has its own charm and provides a static in the middle of a busy day.
COMMUNAL SEATING The appeal of communal seating is twofold, according to Kruse. First, it allows restaurants to cram in even more paying customers. It also could make customers feel like they had a more social experience at a restaurant.
27
28
The lighting in the Communal and Booth dining areas is intended to encourage more conversation and human interaction. The dropped down pendant light for the communal seating is made of bamboo to create a connection to the outside world, and the pendant light for the Booth seating has the restaurant’s primary colour theme to match its surroundings. These lights focus on the foreground and are brighter than the circulation spaces, highlighting the dining area and allowing customers to focus on the people with them.
29
SOCIAL KULTURE RESTAURANT - PATNA Proposed design for a fine dining restaurant, worked on this project while interning with Ar. Amresh Hati. The aim was to create a space where you get to experience food. The design has more of an industrial approach to the process. This provides the restaurant a raw feeling with exposed lights and other specified and naked services. The restaurant covers 3 floors with the top one being a rooftop dining. The facade has been split to give the diners a view of the street and the other half has the Kitchen on the inside and the sign board on the facade.
30
For balance and to retain the industrial motif, the main theme adopts a brutalist approach, with raw exposed brick walls that contrast with the black and white pattern floors and furniture made of raw wood and metal. There are three dining areas—indoor, semi-outdoor, and dining with live screening. Movement across the space is made simple, and each table has an intimate feel thanks to the layout. A roof that may be covered in case of bad weather is present in the semiopen dining area. Additionally, the location of the dining area with live screening on the sixth floor gives it some solitude and separates it from the other diners’ so that the noise can be contained.
