01 Life On Bridges
Treating bridges as a place- as a destination to spend time in, not simply to pass through
Intend of the project is to Explore a hidden dynamic functional layer of the bridges with respect to the context, that acts a common platform to accommodate all the events of the city, as a tourist attraction, as a place to experience the cityscape and the river, as a place of interaction, as a active commercial zone and bringing life to it without disturbing the general traffic flow of the city.
The core idea
of this project started in my hometown since my school days, for which I used to cross a river on a daily basis. At that moment, I am always excited to witness a scenic view of the broad, dynamic city-scapes from the bridge with a natural environment around it. But that experience did not last for a longer time due to our traffic conditions. Even though we have seperate footpaths on either side of the bridge, the walkability level of that space is too low for the users. Such a possibility, what happens if we treat bridge as a destination as a space that can be functionally appealing and emotionally connecting us as well.
Albert Victor Bridge, Madurai • Famous albert victor bridge, one of the important landmark in the city, its the main link between north and south madurai since 130 years as it being expired already for 30 years.
• Location of this bridge splits city into north and south and as old and new city. So, this location has a potential to develop into public realm, a tourist center and a place to accomodate people on events and at the same time we can preserve and make 130 years old bridge as a city’s landmark. The concern is to make this bridge from an infrastructural mono-functional object into a multi-functional object which helps in generating the revenue , attractes people and thus enchace the potential of current riverfront development project.
• Chitirai festival, a ceremony of lord azhagar descends on river vaigai. Thousands and thousands of people witness this spectacle from these bridges.
• Connection of bridge with the community. There are lot number of people depends on this area for their economy and for entertainment. People around the bridge even celebrate its completed anniversary and They were once revolted against the removal of bridge. • Minimal repair works for the bridge happens periodically due to its age to preserve this old structure and the Government proposal of new alternative bridge parallel to av bridge to share the vehicle load of this bridge.
• Current vaigai river restoration development project. Under this smart city mission, restoration of vaigai river and conservation of ancient bridge taking place. The project has been conceived to convert the river into a tourism attraction with all basic amenities, at an outlay of rs 81.41 Crore.

of getting disconneted from their cultural identity. Though the city started emerging along South, with time, the growth process took a shift towards North as it gained most of the new public services after 1900’s.

Madurai, an energetic ancient city is the cultural and tourism hub of religious and historical monuments. The city lies on a flat, fertile plain of River vaigai. Madurai is the main transportation hub southern India, with road and rail lines radiating from the city and also a main Industrial and Educational centre of south Tamilnadu. AV Bridge contributed a great measure in the growth of the Madurai city over the years towards North.
River vaigai,
a 258 km long non perenial
river divides Madurai 250 metres apart as north and south city connected through 5 over bridges and 5 causeway bridges. Av bridge is one amoung the oldest. Washing and drying cloths are the traditinal occupation of this area and also Marginal fishing, Animal grazing, play area, vehicle washing and Religious processions and rituals happens periodically. The river and its elegant system of water holding tanks and channels that supported the urban and agricultural needs in this otherwise arid region for centuries is now damaged due to neglect, sand mining, encroachments and real estate pressures.
• Since the Bridge is the main connection, An active Socio- cultural node is a timely need to neutralize the divide of the city and formalize the future. • The location has the potential to develop into public realm to have more proper activities on it and so to reduce the waste dumping along this area

User group analysis By understanding the context, The proposal should address the key issues around the bridge with Connecting the Fabric of the city across the river banks to suppress the existing cultural divide by taking the Vaigai riverfront development project, Alternate bridge proposal and Heritage walk in the old city proposal projects as the existing scenario. The design majorly focuses on Three user groups according to thier usage.

Socio - economical - tourist walk @ Heritage bridge The design focuses on enhancing the experience of crossing the Vaigai river, increasing interconnectivity and allows a generous multifunctional platform for pedestrians and public programs and as a space for tourist attraction, and to create a memorable identity for Madurai. as well as Flexibility in accommodating the future needs of various types of traffics and reducing congestion in the town centre.
The thesis could be formulated as a design that explores sequential association and articulation of space that tells a story with an expression of activities of different users along their perspectives.
Proposal addresses,
•
Relaxing the bridge with the alternate network for current vehicular mobility
•
Alignment of Traffic movement pattern according to that alternate network.
•
Focus on the development of public space at the water edge and creating Vibrant social corridor between the river barrier.
•
Integrating these spaces with the characteristics of Heritage walk of the city.
•
Making spaces more flexible to adopt activities during Chithirai festival.
•
The design is taken care that it should help in emphazising the Old bridge without disturbing the majesticness and the Heritage value of that 130 years old structure.

Zone 3
Central activity hub This is the main portion of the proposed Heritage bridge. This space sits at the center of the bridge. This design is aimed to be subtle without major dominating design interventions. The design involves replication of the heritage structure from design to its materials. An offset of 2.5 meters on either side of the bridge is provided due to the heritage structure. This offset area is covered with shade which is used as a view deck on the above. The main design intervention is at the center that is 10 meters wide. The central portion has two ends to it. One end from the Northern side is completely designed with the tourists and visitors in mind, whereas the southern part is designed exclusively with the local residents in mind. When one enters the frame from the north side of the bridge, they can witness the visitors center, Perforamnce space, Shop modules of 3m*3m, Traditional workshops, and slowly trasforming into the spaces for complete leisure towards the southern end with bus stops, Cycle parking amentities.

Any place can be designed, but the people are the ones who make the place lively and inviting. Hence this design concentrates on every element and space which invites visitors every day and also provides the safety and comfort for a relaxing and joyful experience. This design also allows riverfront development which will help to maintain the nature of the river. Thus, this proposed design have impact on micro to macro level, that is for the people, city and the environment.

ephemeral characteristics. The viewing decks are turned into spaces for devotees to witness the festival. A security area for continuous surveillance of the festival is provided. A first aid room, public toilets, lost and found centre are adapted in the existing shop modules. A separate space is given for the VIP. A space for media is provided from where they can record the entire festival. A parking facility is also provided for visitors. Specially allocated spaces for each activity reduces confusion and chaos in the area. People can enjoy the festival very much with this type of design.

02 Centre for Learning school is where a child starts to imagine and think. A school environment must
let flow of thoughts and
ideas. This project aims at creating that kind of a school environment where the children enjoy the process of learning.Closed and strict environments restrict the freedom and friendliness.Open spaces encourage interactions and give a sense of freedom.
Ulzhavar santhai site The site is located in the heart of trichy city and is surrounded by commercials and residences. There is high potential as the site is
enclosed by residences and there is a high children
population.
Courtyards create a sense of centrality and unity. This is one method used in traditional construction in order to acheive ventilation. It acts a main central open space where there interaction and communication is active.
Evolution of Class room
A classroom is the basic unit of any school. It is where the children spend most of their time in a day. A confined classroom restricts the imagination of a child. Openess brings in flow of thoughts and creativity.

03 Vocational training centre WHY ? The main occupation in Ariyur village is Agriculture. More than 90% people depend upon agriculture as their main source of income. In the olden days the land surrounding the Ariyur village was fertile enough to be ploughed for both six months. The Cauveri was filled with rain water and flooded into the marsh lands at times during the winters bringing in silt and maintaining the land fertility throught the year. The ground water table was replinished every winter for usage during the harsh summer. Space for deep experience
The prime aim of the design to create a space to experience the deep silence and a sense of spaces within oneself and the surroundings.Designedwith requirement of 15 to 20 individual units, performance spaces of 40
The tr
to 50 peoples, male ,female toilets, store room and eatery spaces. The design considers the existing site with the trees as the energy field. The design connects with the ground not only as the base but as the enclosure. the element of water joins to enhance the overall experience. It connects with the existing trees as the energy centers in multiple ways. The tree abutting the central space are at higher level of podium. thus shading the space below. The trees further off are again constructued around like a paar to connect to the sunk central space in the form of stepped terrain. This tree paar further connects to the energy point nearest to it. creating an interconnected strong physical energy field.
Built up area : 982 sqm Location : konkon

education to under privileged children living in surrounding remote villages. The sloping, hilly contoured site in the lap of nature will also contribute and enhance this special learning experience. The design of this campus would be very organic in its form and expression, with the local stone masonry walls and sloping tiled roofs blending with the landscaped contours. The overall ambience would be playful with various functions at ascending levels. Every room would relate to the surrounding nature and views. In this scenario, connecting pathways, spaces for chance meetings and interaction would also increase the learning possibilities.
The phase I Multipurpose/indoor games hall has been located on the highest flat contour along with the playground, that would also double as an outdoor assembly space with wonderful views.

04 Zapurza centre for creative living in pune
A resource centre to awaken and nurture creativity and develop hidden potential for expression, latent in everyone, especially children. It will be equipped with various studios, workshops, auditorium, exhibition spaces and several museums, supported by adequate tourism and hospitality infrastructure. Zapurza means a ‘creative state’.. Inspired by the poem ‘Zapurza’ created in 1893 by great maharastrian poet keshavsut,it represents the rich cultural process and tradition of marati language. The museum gateway is a unique facility offering in one place a quick glimpse of maharastra’s culture through its persons, places, events and artefacts, in a rich tapestry in interactive, immersive experiential journeys with multiple entry points and layers.
Zapurza has planned to establish in the beautiful natural setting, at kudje village, near pune, with the backdrop of historic sinhagad fort.
Contour site sloping towards north to south.Plinth profile of the complex demonstrating the excavating and filling areas.
Final zapurza complex. Site after placing al the three wings.
